The Powerful Queens of Orango On Orango, the women are in charge. The residents of this island off the coast of Guinea-Bissau in West Africa are members of the Bissago people, an ethnic group with a matri-archal social structure. Here, women choose the men they want to marry and make the proposals. They own the houses, they raise the children and serve as high priestesses. They organize work, keep the keys to the rice stores and safeguard the continuation of the family line. Women are highly respected members of the Bissago community. A matriarchy such as this is highly unusual, not just seen through western eyes, but also in comparison to the rest of Africa and almost all other world civilizations. DW broadcasts the documentary Guinea-Bissau – The Powerful Queens of Orango.

Inspirational Gems There are moments in life when you need them: Places where you can reflect, reorientate and recharge your batteries. Places that give us pause, solace and inspiration. Many peo-ple have such a place in their lives. It could be their own back garden, or perhaps the gym, a meditation class or a particular spot in the forest, the mountains or by the sea. But there are also places with a broader, more spiritual appeal: these include churches, temples and other places of worship, but also extraordinary locations that are the work of Nature. Rhineland-Palatinate has many such places. Presenter Steffen König pays them a visit – in the program Expedition in die Heimat. He is particularly interested in the state’s ruined monasteries, maars and Teufelsfelsen rock formations.

Women against Online Hate SpeechWomen are subjected to more online abuse than men. Women who express strong opinions on the Internet are particular targets. The perpetrators are mostly men – worldwide. For example, a new study says that almost two-thirds of all female journalists have experienced online abuse, harassment, threats and attacks. As a result, 30 percent of the women affected are considering a change of career. Shift meets activists from Azerbaijan and Lebanon and shows how online hate speech can be countered.
