CHECK-IN

Christmas in Lübeck The Lübeck Christmas market is one of the most beautiful in Germany. It was first docu-mented in the year 1648. Lübeck’s Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 –

serves as an especially attractive backdrop for the annual Christmas hustle and bustle. Naturally, Check-in presenter Lukas Stege is also here to sample the marzipan specialties popular all over the world. Lukas also visits three special houses in Lübeck: The Buddenbrook House recalls the Nobel Prize-winning novel “Die Buddenbrooks” by Thomas Mann. Later, this same acco-lade honored Günter Grass, who lived close to the Hanseatic city for many years. His work is the focus of the Günter Grass House. The Willy Brandt House is dedicated to a man who is probably the city’s best-known son, the eponymous Nobel Peace Laureate and German Chancellor.

IN GOOD SHAPE

Time to Quit One billion people will die from smoking and other forms of tobacco consumption in this century – that’s according to a projection of the World Health Organization (WHO). Al-though these days everyone is fully aware of the damaging effects of tar and nicotine, the WHO has again recorded a rise in the number of young smokers. As the new year approa-ches, many people resolve to give up smoking. But their well-laid plans often go awry. Why? The experts know: psychological dependency on nicotine is greater than on heroin. Giving up is certainly possible, but how? Nicotine plasters or acupuncture? What about mentoring and group sessions? Is New Year really the best time to tackle the challenge? In Good Shape presenter Carsten Lekutat speaks to one of the most successful quit smoking gurus.
