Israel Turns 70 On 12 May, several DW programs focus on the 70th anniversary of Israeli independence.

When David Ben-Gurion proclaimed Israel's declaration of independence on 14 May 1948, it fulfilled a dream for many Jewish people. But that very night, the new country came un-der attack from Arab states in a bid to reverse this proclamation. The Arab-Israeli conflict remains unresolved to this day, while on the other hand, the development of the State of Israel has been a success story. A once predominantly agricultural country has become a leading high-tech nation – a tumultuous story that’s been critically observed by literature and the arts. Three generations of Israeli cultural figures speak on Arts.21 about initial visions, subsequent disappointment, disillusionment and the challenges of today.

After the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, hundreds of thousands of Pales-tinians were forced to leave their towns and villages. Those displaced include the former residents of Iqrit in Galilee, a village that hasn’t existed for decades – but the yearning for homes lost remains as vivid as ever. DOCFILM

The Germans The elaborately produced documentary series The Germans immerses the viewer in more than 1,000 years of German history – a fascinating journey through time from the very be-ginnings to the 20th century. The series presents historic personalities, whose profiles open the door to the various different epochs. Deutsche Welle is broadcasting selected episodes from the series, beginning with “Char-lemagne and the Saxons.” Even during his lifetime, Charlemagne (c. 748 – 814) was regarded as the “father of Europe.” Many European peoples can trace their roots back to the era of the great Holy Roman Emperor, who created key prerequisites for later developments on Ger-man soil.

IN GOOD SHAPE

Demystifying Fasciae! Strained muscles, inexplicable discomfort with every movement, constant back pain. Many people suffer from persistent complaints that doctors find tricky to diagnose. These prob-lems are often caused by fasciae. Doctors are only just beginning to recognize the signifi-cance of these bands of connective tissue. Fasciae are made up of a milky-white substance that encloses organs, muscles and bones, thereby giving the body stability and shape. But fasciae can be damaged through incorrect load-bearing, stress or immobility. They can stick together, become twisted or inflamed. Treatment concepts such as the Fascial Distortion Model or Rolfing claim to alleviate the symptoms. But what do methods like these really achieve? Who are they helping? Is the hype surrounding this unassuming tissue really justi-fied? In Good Shape uncovers the secret of fasciae.
