CHECK-IN

Romantic Destination Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Mark Twain, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones – Heidelberg’s guest list is a long and glittering one. All succumbed to the charm of the city on the Neckar river. Why? Germany has a wealth of beautiful old cities. Its riverside location is also not unique, and Heidelberg Castle is a ruin. Nevertheless, the city in the state of Baden-Württemberg is a dream destination with visitors from all over the world – from the US, China and Japan. Check-in presenter Lukas Stege investigates what makes Heidelberg so special.

Death in the Philippines More than 7,000 deaths in one year – suspected drug addicts and dealers in the Philippines. The film Death in the Philippines documents President Rodrigo Duterte’s merciless battle against consumers of drugs. As Mayor of Davao 28 years ago, he allegedly sent death squads out onto the streets to catch them. But despite this brutal approach, the city still has the nation’s highest murder rate. Nevertheless, Filipinos adore their President. In the most re-cent poll by a local institute, three out of every four Filipinos support Duterte – one of the highest ever approval ratings for a president of this archipelago. Human rights activists are alarmed – and families grieve the loss of their loved ones.

Absurdistan India’s northeast is fascinating for its enchanting exoticism and bizarre super-latives: This is where the hottest chili grows… it’s also home to the world’s rainiest place, the family with the most children, headhunters as remnants of an ancient macho culture – and women who govern and whom men obey. The film Absurdis-tan – India's Crazy Northeast shows a region of extremes – both traditional and modern.

Dirty Gold War  It’s one of the most sought-after precious metals – gold. But the gold rush of past years means new sources have to be found to meet demand. Workers often extract it from the earth using a toxic solution of mercury and cyanide, contaminating both people and the land. Dirty Gold War docu-ments how the gold industry functions behind the shiny facade. The filmmakers travel from the Brazilian Amazon to the Peruvian Andes and show the extreme suf-fering of mine workers in sharp contrast to the luxury industry. They speak to indig-enous people and activists trying to make gold extraction more environmentally friendly. A story about the gold industry.
