I am sure many of you may know it. Basically it is a biblical story about a man who helps another man lying by the side of the road after he was beaten and robbed. Not unlike the Australian way of helping your mate. In our school we have many students who like to help their mates, but unfortunately in a way that is not constructive. For instance, two students have an argument at recess and the issue is not resolved. Come lunchtime, a friend of one of them (usually bigger) seeks out the other child involved and uses standover tactics to threaten them to keep away from their friend. Another example: two students are arguing and start pushing each other. A friend of one of them sees what’s going on and steps in to help their friend and hits the other student thus causing a fight. How would you as a parent react to these two examples? Nine times out of ten, a third party stepping into an argument makes the issue bigger. Quite often the third party gets into more trouble than the original two students. When supporting students with these types of situations, we use the following strategies: We tell the students that if they are not part of the problem, keep away. If they are concerned about a friend in trouble, make the strong choice to talk with or go and get a teacher. If they threaten, verbally abuse or get physical, they need to accept the consequences of their behaviour. As a school community we do not condone bullying behaviour. We promote resolving issues in a non violent way and using restorative principles in line with our school values. I believe there is a bit of Good Samaritan in all of us. We need to teach our students what this means and not confuse it with bullying behaviour or helping your mate at all costs. Cheers, Shaun

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers, When I was young, I remember being told about the story of the Good Samaritan.

When supporting students with these types of situations, we use the following strategies:

• We tell the students that if they are not part of the problem, keep away.

• If they are concerned about a friend in trouble, make the strong choice to talk with or go and get a teacher.

• If they threaten, verbally abuse or get physical, they need to accept the consequences of their behaviour.

• As a school community we do not condone bullying behaviour.

• We promote resolving issues in a non violent way and using restorative principles in line with our school values.

I believe there is a bit of Good Samaritan in all of us. We need to teach our students what this means and not confuse it with bullying behaviour or helping your mate at all costs. Cheers, Shaun

School, the Thiele Fundraising Committee wish to thank all the parents and friends who came

along to our 2011 Quiz Night last Saturday night.

Everyone who attended had a great night and congratulations to the Pink Ladies who were the overall winners on the night. Thank you also to Ray McGhee, our Quiz Master and all the sponsors who gave so generously.

A sincere thank you also goes to Trudie Blacksell, Bek Fletcher and Vicki Powell for the many hours they spent preparing for the night. Through their efforts and generosity of the parents $3000 was raised for our school. We also ask that if parents, family and friends are able it would be good to support these businesses with your patronage.

held. For the lower primary these were fun events that focussed on participation and enjoyment while the primary students participated in mainly athletic events. After the lunch break, track events were

held. Although the day was a little warm all the students had a great time. Thank you must go to Chris Gent (Thiele) and Ben Searle (Nativity) and the Sports Day Committee for organising a really good day. Thank you also to the canteen workers who sold many lunches, ice blocks and slushies. To assist us with planning for next year’s Campus Sports Day any feedback would be appreciated. INSIGHTS WITH MEL & LEIGH

“We Will Remember Them”

In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

John McCrae (1872–1918) A year ago today I stood with Thiele’s year 7 students at Canberra’s Australian War Memorial. What a special and incredibly powerful place to be, especially the day before Remembrance Day. Being there amongst the individual stories, images and history, you could not help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and awe. Something of particular importance was allowing the children to make a real connection between the life they know now, and the courageous efforts that many young men and women gave in order that they may live in a peaceful nation. At the end of our visit we were each given a red poppy to place on the Roll of Honour. (During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium. In soldiers' folklore, the vivid red of the poppy came from the blood of their comrades soaking the ground. In the literature of the First World War a new, more powerful symbolism was attached to the poppy – the sacrifice of shed blood ). Some even found their surnames among the many, which was really special to see. In that quiet moment we paused to remember those who made an incredible sacrifice. So on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month please be sure to take a moment of silence and remember them…. “ They shall grow not old, as we that are left

grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years

condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the

morning

We will remember them.”

Laurence Binyon (1869–1943)

MATERIALS & SERVICES CHARGES - 2011

To families who have yet to finalise payment for their Materials & Services Fees for 2011, I remind you that full payment needs to be completed before the end of the 2011 school year. It is Department For Education and Child Development policy that failure to pay these charges may result in the Governing Council making a recommendation to commence further debt recovery action through the EDC Debt Collection Department. This action is in line with Sec 106A of the Education Act and the Materials and Services Charges Administrative Instructions and Guidelines. I would encourage all parents who believe they may be eligible for School Card assistance to apply no later than November 18th 2011, which is the cut-off date for all School Card applications. Approved School Card holders will be exempted from paying the Materials and Services Charges.
