It is VESSEL SAFETY CHECK time again. The VSC is an annual event, and it allows those that avail themselves of the free safety check to be assured they have all the necessary safety equipment on board their vessel. It also ensures items that have an expiration date are not expired and are valid, such as their fire extinguishers and flares. This squadron service is, or course, available to all members of our squadron and is available to the public as well, such as your friends and neighbors. If one’s boat does not pass, there is no punitive action taken, and it is not reported to any agency. Once the item(s) that needed attention is corrected we will re-visit and re-do the VSC and, when one’s boat passes, issue the current year safety sticker. Contact P/C Ron Terciak to schedule your VSC. ▲

Scuttlebutt Have you ever heard of CANOE, an acronym for the “committee to ascribe nautical origins to everything"? Probably not, but there is a Facebook page and many groups claim this acronym. Of course, it is all in fun and by those devoted to all things related to the sea. Although many of their claims are totally unsubstantiated, many phrases we use in everyday English do come from our nautical heritage. The ones I use here I verified through three different sources. A simple phrase such as "the SCBSPS is by and large a first rate organization" uses two phrases with nautical origins. Continued in next column →

A good ship handled "by and large" meaning it handled well both into and with the wind. The British navy from the 16th century until the advent of steam rated its ships by the number of heavy cannon on deck. The ships with 100 or more were "first rate". Those with 90-98 second rate, etc. Many other expressions we use come from life onboard sailing ships of yesteryear. You'd better "know the ropes" and "toe the line" if you don't want to be put "over a barrel" and have someone “let the cat out of the bag". On ships there were literally miles of what we now call "line" and it was a matter of everyone's safety to know what and where they were. Continued on page 13 bottom of column 1

Misc. P/C Ron Terciak, JN

Hello all, Your squadron has done 88 VSC,s to date. last year we did 231 VSCs and our goal this year was for 250. If those inspectors who do most of their VSC,s in the summer match their output from last year we will have done 288 VSC,s !!! 300 is in reach! Please help us reach this lofty goal by having a Vessel Safety Check done on your boat. -------------------------------------------------------- Don’t forget that for each new member you bring into the squadron you will receive a free dinner at one of our monthly dinner meetings. --------------------------------------------------------- We are all set for our three-day Cruise to Lake Okeechobee and the Roland Martin Marina later this month. Our next overnight cruise will be part of the District 22 Cruise & Rendezvous to the South Seas Resort in November. Information is available on the District 22 website. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Our squadron yard sale will be April 8 at 8 AM till 2PM at the parking area in front of the squadron office. Still time to get rid of your valuable (to someone) used stuff and get a tax deductible donation at the same time. Only requirements are NO CLOTHES and any heavy goods must be taken back as we have little storage space in the office. The squadron maintains the right to refuse any donation deemed unsalable. ------------------------------------------------------- I have had several squadron members with large boats express an interest in going to the Bahamas this summer. If you are interested let me know and I will arrange to share the interest. Did you know you could test your DSC radio? The USCG has a designated MMSI number for this purpose. It is 00366999. Enter this number into your DSC radio and hit the send button. If your radio is working properly, you will receive a signal back from the USCG. NEVER hit the red DSC button on your radio to test it. ▲

These four squadron members are winners!

Joe Aten Tom Logio

Steve Mortensen and Dick Potts.

A smiling Melissa Butler (and a proud Charlie Richardson) advised these four members are super winners as they each passed the Piloting Class examination, and did so with flying colors! Congrat’s are in order for each of them!!! This is a very important and significant step towards furthering one’s self-education, which is one of the very important items in our squadron’s manifest. They are absolutely entitled to be proud of what they accomplished, and we should be proud of them! --Bill Behrens Commander ▲

Congratulations

Continued on page 9 column 1 As of this writing there are 13 boats in total, with 5 boats from the Fort Myers squadron joining our squadron’s 8 boats for this event. A total of 32 people will be attending. That is a fantastic showing of support and participation. We are still seeking members who will be attending the one-day District 22 2017 Spring Conference in Punta Gorda. Our squadron truly needs to have a good showing at the actual conference. By the way, the names of the delegates (and alternate delegates) need to be submitted to the district prior to the conference. We are currently giving some very serious attention to the squadron’s investments and the strategy for both the short-term and long-term so as to maximize the returns. More on this as some meaningful plans are developed which will come about after some scheduled exploratory meetings with experts in the financial world to help guide and direct us in the most beneficial direction for the squadron. Bob Zimmerman, of the USPS (National) Communications Committee, had previously sent some suggestions for our Tidings publication. His role is to review the monthly publications for various squadrons. He just recently contacted me (by phone) and was VERY complimentary towards the Tidings Editor, John Ragone. He was very impressed with the layout, the combination of photos and columns demonstrating the level of enthusiasm within our squadron, the educational schedules, the birthday acknowledgements and other complimentary comments. He concluded with a huge compliment to John Ragone saying that I should tell the squadron editor that he said he “was truly impressed with his editorial accomplishments”. Continued in next column →

ATTA-BOY John!!!! Well done!!! We all echo Bob Zimmerman’s comment. The Audit Committee completed a financial audit of the squadron records with our Treasurer. It has been three years since the last audit. Their findings and recommendations will be discussed at the next Executive Committee meeting. Their report contains the following opening statement: “The Squadron’s financial records were found to be in proper order; bills paid promptly, deposits made in a timely fashion after receipt. There are no long-term outstanding checks”. As you read in the last issue of the Tidings, our Squadron Safety Officer, John Swenson, has announced this will be his last season as being our safety officer. He has done this for five years! Thank you John! He will continue to be our point person for messages on our squadron telephone, directing the information from various callers to the appropriate persons, as well as conducting numerous VSC’s in his area and will continue being the education classes’ registrar, providing pertinent information as to students information and ensuring, by contacts with them, all will be attending as planned. Thank you, John!!! If you wish to be considered for the position of Squadron Safety Officer please contact me via email ([email protected]) or phone (239-470-1773). April is unfolding as a very busy month with the District 22 2017 Spring Conference, the special event presentation of “Local Waters” to the members and guests of the Quad-Squads, a CPR class open to all those interested in becoming certified or re-certified, and the San Carlos Bay and Fort Myers combined squadrons C&R to Lake “O”. It is hoped all will participate as much as possible in as many events as possible, and enjoy our squadron’s offerings, camaraderie and friendships. Continued on page 10 column 1

Hello all, All marine radios sold today are 'DSC" radios. DSC stands for Digital Selective Calling. DSC is just one component of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Other components are Epirbs ( Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon ), AIS ( Automatic Identification System), Navtex ( Navigation Text Messaging ) and SART (Search and Rescue Transponder). VHF radios with DSC feature a Red distress button which when pushed will be heard by commercials vessels, other boaters with DSC radios as well as the US Coast Guard. In addition, when connected to your GPS it will show your position hastening your rescue. Continued on page 13 column 2

Kudos go to Hermann Kuhnel and Bill Jennings. Hermann successfully completed the Electronic Navigation course and with that achieved "Educational Proficiency." You can do that, too! What it takes is completion of Advanced Piloting and three Elective Courses. Congratulations, Hermann. As for Bill Jennings, he finished the training necessary to allow him to supervise others in Basic Powerboat Handling (BPH), which is required for anyone seeking certification as an Inland Navigator (IN). His training required him to take two students--volunteers Ron Terciak and Keely Jones --out for a day performing various drills on the water. Continued on page 12 column 2

CPR Class Lt/C Nancy Chambers, S.

Bill was supervised by Scott McDonald who flew in from Texas to do the training. Now, members who would like to qualify as Inland Navigators can call on Bill to do the on-the-water component. To qualify as IN, students must complete the following mix of course work, and skill development. Those interested may look to other squadrons in the Quad Squad for some of the courses needed. (Ron Terciak has been studying Marine Electrical Systems and Marine Communication with the Sanibel Captiva Squadron). But, from now on, it will be possible to do the BPH part through our own Squadron. Congratulations and thanks, Bill. Just in case you are interested in pursuing IN certification, here are the requirements:

• Courses

• NASBLA approved safe boating course • Seamanship (or S 101 and S 102) • Engine Maintenance (EM) • Marine Electronics or Marine Electrical

Systems or ME 101 • Seminars

• How to Use a Chart (CHT) (or Piloting, Chart Smart, or Boating courses)

• Basic Weather and Forecasting (BWF) or Onboard Weather Forecasting (OBWF) (or Weather course or Weather Modules)

• Using GPS (GPS) (or the new P or AP course) • VHF Radio and VHF/DSC Marine Radio (or

ME 102 or Marine Communications Systems) • Skills

• BPH - Basic Powerboat Handling skill demonstration or US Sailing Safe Powerboat Handling on-the-water program

• FE - Use of Fire Extinguishers • Optional Endorsements

• IW - Inland Waterways (Navigating Rivers,

Dams and Locks seminar) • PAD - Paddle craft (canoes and kayaks) -

Paddle Smart seminar • SA - Sailboating (or Sail or Sail Modules) ▲

Another feature is that you can register your radio with the Coast Guard and get a MMSI number( Mobile Maritime Service Identity) You register through either the USPS or Boat US, NOT the Coast Guard. When you register your radio the Coast Guard now knows who the owner of the vessel is, phone numbers, description of the vessel, next of kin (encouraging!) and a lot more information rescuers might need. Entering a VSC number into your radio can be tricky and needs some care. If you are not sure how to do it one of the squadron members who has experience in entering MMSI numbers can help. ▲

When all onboard were ordered to assemble they were given a seam on the deck where they were to place their toes to form a straight line. Punishment could mean you would be tied over a cannon barrel and flogged with a cat o' nine tail that was stored in a leather bag. Surprise! There's one word that you might not think is of nautical origin and that's "skyscraper". Yes, it's now used to describe very tall buildings but it was originally a term for the small triangular sail set on the highest point of the mast and was used to in light air to catch any breeze available. Funny how things change! I'll let you determine the origin of these last few words. This is the "bitter end" of the article and I hope you're not "pooped" from reading it. ▲

Just a reminder. . .

The special event “Local Waters” presentation to the USPS Quad-Squad members is coming up soon.

It is scheduled for April 4th, 2017, at 6:30 p.m., in the Grand Ballroom at Pinchers, near downtown Fort Myers, next to the Edison marina.

The event is a presentation by two members of the Southwest Florida Yacht Club regarding waterfront restaurants, marinas, anchorages, etc., for areas ranging from Marco Island to North Port/Port Charlotte. They speak from first-hand knowledge as they have “been there and done that”.

It is an extremely well done presentation that all, from beginner boaters to experienced boaters, will find interesting, useful, informative and beneficial.

It is a one-time event so please try your best to attend. There is no charge – it is FREE! All of the details are on an attachment which was sent on March 1st, 2017.

If you wish, come earlier (or stay later) and have dinner at Pinchers. Also, there will be a cash bar in a side-area of the meeting room for those wishing to imbibe in a cocktail or other adult beverage.

Our Public Classes

We offer several classes to increase boater knowledge and skills. These classes are open to the public (membership is not required). The classes are presented as a public service by the Squadron and are

taught by experienced Squadron members America’s Boating Course 3rd Edition ® Is our basic boating class. The class will cover the basics of boat handling, PWCs, required equipment, navigation aids and rules, and dealing with emergencies. It will provide instruction and examination for laws and regulations of the State of Florida. The course is a total of 8 hours spread over two days. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "America's Boating Course 3rd Edition".

Local Waters – Local Charts Is our course for boaters in the Ft. Myers area. The Local Waters class is directed toward new boaters and boaters new to the area, as well as those who wish to learn chart reading. Using Chart 11427, boaters will learn some of the basics of navigation in the Fort Myers Area. Students would bring their own copies of the chart. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "Local Waters - Local Chart". Using GPS GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However using GPS on the water is distinctly different from a moving map display in your car. This 2-3 hour seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation which you will use. It then shows you how to use the buttons on your GPS and how to relate the GPS to your charts. Using VHF & VHF DSC Marine Radios This class is essential for those with a 'new' radio or those planning to buy a new radio. DSC is operational in Fort Myers. You need to register your radio and learn how it's different. We also cover standard VHF operations. Read a detailed description of the course. Paddle Smart This seminar is intended for those interested in Paddle sports or are considering the purchase of a Kayak, Canoe or other Paddle sport equipment. Read a detailed description of this course by clicking on "Paddle Smart". Hurricanes & Boats This is a mini-seminar. It covers how to select a location and prepare your boat for a hurricane.
