BRIGHTLINGSEA TRIFLESMore ‘Tails’ from Toffee the Vicar’s Cat.Guess what! I’ve found another hair snipping shop, across the road from the church clock, on the corner, very nice man in there and it’s nice and cosy with quite a good view of the church front door, so I can nip over to see if the Vicar is about for some nibbles.

I keep hearing folk when they pass by talking about something called ‘Brexit’ what on earth is it? Some say they hate it, some are fed up with it; others say they should all be shot.

Perhaps it’s some kind of tasty food, biscuits or meat, I hope it is, perhaps I can have a nibble of it. It seems to be getting cold nowadays. I reckon that white flying stuff will soon be with us. Brrr-Keep warm, Toffee

An unexpected but welcome visitor

A few days ago Cath and I had an unexpected visitor, a cheery chap named Gordon. As a young lad in 1939 when WW2 was declared, he lived in our house, 18 Well Street, with his grandparents.

Sadly, his parents were killed in a car crash just a few weeks before, a rare occurrence in those days, so he spent some of the War years in our little town. His son brought him from his home in Sevenoaks in Kent on a memory- lane trip. We invited him in and he told us what he could remember as a young lad.

He heard Neville Chamberlain announce we were at War with Germany; he remembered the German Dornier Bomber crashing on the West Marsh and his Grandad, who was a Home Guard took him to see the wreckage. He remembered Grandad regularly acquiring a ham hock from near the rail station on a regular basis – ‘Private Walker’ Dad’s Army style!

Gordon also remembers the bakery (now ‘Mac’s Plaice’) at the end of the road and a butcher’s in town, and also machine gun fire in the lower reaches of Town. I have promised to compile some information of those days while he was here and send them to him. It was a pleasure to meet him.

Our home has quite a historical past. In the late 1800’s it was part of the Royal Navy Barracks and in WW1 it was part of the Australian Army Anzacs’ Kitchen. Also about ten years ago on Brightlingsea Open Garden weekend, an elderly lady showed us the exact spot where at 9 months pregnant, she fell through the bedroom floor and landed on the then kitchen floor - thankfully the baby survived.

We await the next storyteller from the past; perhaps we have buried treasure under the floor!! Exciting eh!

Great Grandma Prior’s Recipe Milk Jelly½ pint of milk ¼ oz of gelatine 1 oz sugar grated rind ½ lemon

Slowly heat mixture gently until gelatine has melted.

Do not boil as it will curdle.

OPEN TUESDAY TO SATURDAY

The glorious British tradition of ‘Afternoon Tea’ was celebrated in St James’ Church on Saturday 5 October presented beautifully by Brightlingsea Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade (CLCGB).

The otherwise long hours between lunch and dinner were filled with a sumptuous array of delights giving those who attended the opportunity to relax, enjoy each other’s company and be waited upon by Dexter Rusbridge, Ella Wong and Lilly Greensmith.

Thank goodness for the Duchess of Bedford who is of course credited with first making a formal social occasion of Afternoon Tea. All those who supported this event enjoyed going home full to the brim of scones, sausage rolls, classical sandwiches (such as cucumber, cheese and pickle, egg mayonnaise and ham) as well as delicious cakes and pastries.

Not to mention limitless tea and coffee!

If you are prone to be being peckish in the gap between lunch and dinner, do look out for our next Afternoon Tea event. Invite your friends along to enjoy this most leisurely of meals and support your Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade.

Brightlingsea Brigade CLCGB would like to specifically thank MOP CAP Preserves for their donation of Homemade Jam for this event which

was absolutely delicious; and The Cherry Tree for their raffle prize donation of an afternoon tea-for-two voucher.

Taking tea with the Brigade

NEWS FROM THE HOLY MOWERSThe churchyard is looking rather beautiful, dressed in its autumn colours, with lots of cyclamen around the base of trees. The war graves will soon be adorned with poppies and this seems a good time to review the churchyard regulations. These are set by Chelmsford Diocese and not individual churches or vicars. Our churchyard is a ‘green’ churchyard which means we only allow natural flowers or plants and stone or wooden grave markers.

• Dogs are very welcome, on a lead. Do not allow your dog to foul the churchyard.

• We encourage planting of natural flowers, snowdrops, daffodil, primroses, autumn cyclamen especially around the headstone where they will not get damaged by the mowers.

• Please do not place any object on the grave, jars, photos ornaments etc. these may become dislodged and are hazardous [to wildlife and personnel] when broken or caught by the mowers. Any such objects should be removed and kept at home

• Remove plastic wrapping from flowers laid on the graves. Put plastic in the bin, or take it home. Water is available from the water butts by the sheds, please return watering can.

• Do not place artificial flowers on the graves, with the exception of poppies, Christmas wreaths or on an anniversary. They must be secured to prevent them blowing around, and must be removed after 1month.

• Recent graves will settle after 6-9 months. The soil will then be flattened and seeded with grass seed, to allow for mowing. To avoid distress, any plants in this area should be removed prior to flattening.

There are many meaningful ways to remember a loved one at home, either indoors or a special area in your garden. To ensure we abide by the regulations, please remove any objects on the graves and take them home. The Holy Mowers lovingly care for the churchyard so all visitors can appreciate its beauty and find comfort and peace.

Sheila

FROM THE VICAR: October: the month gigantic spiders take up residence in the house (poor things, it’s wet and chilly out) and the thick jumpers come out of storage; the days darken and, as if in compensation, trees blaze gloriously.

People blaze gloriously too, helping others and the environment with passion and energy, imagination and creativity.

In London, Extinction Rebellion protests raise awareness of climate change as the crisis of this generation.

In Brightlingsea, I help Roger Tabor, members of our Council and other volunteers to plant trees at the Lozenge: lovely, healthy specimens I look forward to watching grow tall and strong.

At the Primary school, parents, children, Governors and other helpers are turning tangled wasteland into a garden to be enjoyed.

It is said that the best time to plant a tree is 30 years ago; the second-best time is now.

Yes, it would be good to have known sooner more about the state of our world, done more for longer, but now is all we have with any certainty: a gift God has given us.

We can dedicate it to destructiveness and selfishness and laziness or we can be part of a movement for change and

Growing strong for the future

transformation, caring for this planet that is our home.

Let’s make our now count, blazing as brilliantly as the Autumn leaves as we move into the dark of November.

After all, we have a future, as precarious as it sometimes seems.

Each generation faces its crisis and as we move toward Remembrance we are reminded of how an earlier generation faced the crisis of wartime and prevailed, at great cost.

We do not know what the cost of changing the world to give our

children and grandchildren a brighter future might be, and we may need all our discipline and courage to meet it, but we live in the second-best time to begin planting what we wish to see - now.

Every blessing, Caroline

MOTHERS’ UNIONThe October Meeting was well attended. The members were joined by four visitors to hear our Speaker, Roy Birnie who told us about his ancestors in Brightlingsea that were connected to the boats in our harbours. MOTHERS’ UNION GENERAL MEETING in Portsmouth I attended this on 17-18 Sept. It was a lovely occasion, during which the new Worldwide President, Sheran Harper read the Lesson. She is from Guyana, and is the first Worldwide President from outside the British Isles. The morning session beginning with opening worship, followed by various talks, including a very inspirational message from Sheran and closing with midday prayers. MU’s CEO, spoke to us in the afternoon, followed by the new MU Central Chaplain, Rt Revd Dr Emma Ineson. Then Revd Barry Hill spoke about working alongside the Clergy and our call to Discipleship. Next year’s Meeting will be held in Belfast. Vivien Chapman

Statement issued by the Bishops of the Church of England calling for respect on all sides amid growing acrimony over the debate on Britain’s withdrawal from the EU.

“We should speak to others with respect. And we should also listen.

“We should do this especially with the poor, the marginalized, and with those whose voices are not often heard in our national conversation.

We should not denigrate, patronise or ignore the honest views of fellow citizens, but seek to respect their opinions and their votes.”

MISSION OF THE MONTH Beacon House, ColchesterAs Christmas time approaches, it is quite natural to be drawn to think about homeless people and the agencies striving to address their problems. Beacon House, Colchester, is one such organization, and has been reaching out to homeless and marginalized people in Colchester for over 20 years. They moved into more accessible premises in Crouch Street eighteen months ago. They are part of the nationwide Beacon House Ministries, a Christian-based charity, established to help homeless people, those in insecure accommodation and those at high risk of homelessness. Beacon House offers a wide range of support services, providing a necessary and vital lifeline to these vulnerable individuals. They offer practical help and medical care, and work with people to help them change behaviours both damaging to themselves and to the wider community. Running as a drop-in day centre, they have facilities for showers, laundry, clothing and toiletries. Their trained staff offer time to listen to individual stories and provide links to specialist agencies. In addition they own or manage a range of shared accommodation which offers short-term ‘move on’ rooms or flats for those who have become homeless, encouraging them into more permanent housing, and to ‘move on’ personally into more sustainable and fulfilling lives.Search for ‘Beacon House – Colchester’ on the internet to learn more.

HARBOUR LITES: News from the HarbourmasterThree ships, two woodchip and one cement; we were expecting a scrap however it was delayed then rescheduled due to bad weather. The weather reverted to its usual October standard.

The Marina development is now very near completion. As we speak, landscaping is being conducted on the townhouses and has been completed in the enclosed areas.

November 9th will once again provide an explosive source of wonderment to the younger members of Brightlingsea along with a big bonfire for Fireworks at Colne Yacht Club.

I’m not referring to the Stakeholders’ meetings which were surprisingly well attended. They included a short explanation of a project by Brightlingsea

Town Council for a Heritage pier to be constructed on the Hard. It would display flat bottom Barges and some veteran powered launches. This comes complete with a Town Square arrangement for pop up shops etc.

The Jetty has once again had another pontoon replaced as it does every year, the old one will now be subjected to welding, repairs and general remediation.

The Yachts are once again coming out for the winter, so they too can be repainted, repaired and tidied up before next season.

We can look forward to dark nights and Christmas and a new season in the very far distance. James Thomas
