It began when D.R.S. Rosebrough returned to his farm in Memphis near the close of the “War Between the States” in 1865. He had been raised in a Methodist home but it wasn’t until he had a great religious experience at Bethlehem Methodist Church that he felt God’s call to enter the ministry. The Memphis Conference accepted him on trial as a junior pastor. During this time he saw how few churches were in the area and, along with several others, started services in a house on his farm. By November 1867 the house church was well enough established to be given the name Bethel (House of God) and placed on a circuit with Springdale church. Thomas P. Davidson, a retired minister, became the first pastor. In 1868 Rosebrough was a minister in full connection and became the pastor of the circuit, a post he held until 1871. Although he was assigned to other churches, Bethel and the community around it held a special place in his heart. So, in 1875 he deeded the land and the building at Barron and Prescott Road to the Bethel trustees. He also gave a lot at Rosebrough and Semmes for an African American church. When he died during the yellow fever epidemic (1878) he left the community with two active congregations. By 1888 the population had shifted. Bethel took down its building and rebuilt it at Buntyn Village north of the train station on Southern. From then on the church was known as Buntyn M.E. Church, South. In 1910, the church moved into a larger building east of the original location. At this time Buntyn church was still on the Springdale Circuit, but, became a full station church in 1913! The church and the community continued to grow with the streetcars, the West Tennessee State Teachers College (now University of Memphis), and the new subdivisions developing in the area. John T. Fisher gave the church a lot at Mynders and Highland where tent meetings were held on the property. Sunday School and worship services were held at the college until the “Red Brick Building” (later called the Russell building) was completed about 1923. The church soon outgrew this building and plans were made for the present sanctuary, which was completed in 1930. The church building and the congregation continued to grow peaking in 1964 with 3,200 members. St. Luke’s was the largest church in the annual conference at that time. Through the years, the moves, and the name changes, St. Luke’s has continued to be a vital church in the community currently with 963 members who continue to carry on a vital ministry in this growing and changing neighborhood. We are going “Forward in Faith” sharing Christ, serving community, and loving people excited to meet the future!

St. Luke’s 150th AnniversaryIT’S HEREPeople who love God and feel called to serve this community have been a part of this church for a long time. It began when D.R.S. Thank you to all those who attended the Forward in Faith (FiF) information-sharing meeting on Sunday. FiF is thankful for your support and continued prayers of this church-wide endeavor. Our goal is simple: To help meaningfully grow St. Luke’s by focusing on engagement, true connections, and stronger relationships with God, not just focusing on numbers.Below is information that was shared in the meeting:ALL St. Luke’s ministries should be prayerfully and intentionally explored to see if they: meet the needs of the community,

increase engagement, and welcome new people of all walks of life into St. Luke’s.

Your ministry team or yourself should ask:What is the ministry’s goal?Does it meet the common goal of helping St. Luke’s to grow? How can you adjust your goal to align with moving FiF?Who do you want to reach? What resources do you currently have? Lack?

How forward in Faith can help you and your ministry:Once you’ve determined that you would like to revitalize your ministry and make it the best ministry it can be, here are some suggested steps if you would like FiF’s help:Contact FiF to set up a time to talk at our next meeting (we typically meet once a month)Meet with FiF (outline your thoughts, dreams, concerns and seek feedback on next steps)Be prepared for this process to be involved and take some time. New things, great ideas – take discussion, planning, and preparation.

See a need or an opportunity for St. Luke’s to be represented in our community? If you see a need in our community, an event, a cause, something where you’d like St. Luke’s to be represented in the community as a way to connect and welcome others, please contact FiF. We need your help and we’d love to harness your interest and passion. FiF will not be around forever so we are looking to equip leaders and set the congregation up to help St. Luke’s meaningfully grow. Come talk to us about your ideas and interests, how it fits with the FiF goal, and explore ways we can equip you to fill that need.

Some Reminders:FiF is made up of volunteers and there are always several projects going on at one time. This doesn’t mean we don’t want to help, it just may take some time to make changes and flesh out ideas. Do not let finances stifle your creativity and ideas; FiF has budget money to help in areas that promote the overall goal and we would LOVE to use it until it’s gone; Please come talk to us.Make sure your ideas include time for planning– it will take time to meet, make decisions, and unveil new ideas; think about short-term and long-term goalsDo not get overwhelmed. Yes, change can be overwhelming and the planning and sifting through ideas can be a lot. But you are not alone.

Ask yourself: What am I doing to keep one person fully engaged?

Remember, YOU are the church and your role in your ministry will help shape the direction St. Luke’s in heading. Forward in Faith is here to help you.

BOO OUT is coming SOON!We’re trying to assess interest for having a Trunk or Treat this year at Boo Out 2017 so we’re reaching out to YOU! Boo Out will be Friday, October 20 from 6 – 8pm and set-up can begin as early as 4pm. Would you like to participate in our Second Annual Trunk or Treat at Boo Out? We had success last year in having fun and engaging trunks that the kids loved. If you’d like to participate, please let Megan know by September 22. I will determine the week of Septem-ber 25-29 if we’re doing Trunk or Treat and provide any additional information. Here are a few additional points to consider should we have Trunk or Treat:· Costumes are encouraged! Have fun!· Please make sure your Trunk is not too scary for our little ones.

· Please have individually wrapped, peanut-free candy/treats for 300 children. We recommend only passing out 1 piece at a time because there will be many children. (Don’t let the cost deter you. Come talk to me)

· Set-up begins at 4:30 pm, October 20.· Please plan on staying for the entire night - 6-8pm.· Should it rain, we will plan to move the “trunks” inside.

I’m so excited for another great Boo Out! I hope you’ll consider doing a trunk this year.

SANCTUARY STEWARD OPPORTUNITYWould you consider being part of a group of volunteers who come on a rotating schedule to neaten the Sanctuary and have it ready for Worship services each week? This loyal team replaces Bibles and hymnals in book racks, restocks offering envelopes, collects used bulletins, and sharpens pencils. We currently have enough volunteers that each person’s name comes up only every 8 to 10 weeks. If you are already serving in this way and are willing to continue or if you will be a new volunteer, please call Virginia Hathorn at 327-3962 or email at [email protected] in advance for your help. Remember, if you are unable to volunteer at this time, it is a big help if you take your worship bulletin with you after services and return your Bible and hymnal to the rack as you leave the Sanctuary.

New CD Ministry to begin January 2018

The Church Council approved the decision on Aug. 6 to discontinue the radio broadcast at the end of 2017. A CD ministry will take its place where a CD and bulletin of the worship service will be mailed each week to homebound mem-bers and others who request them. If you know of someone who would like to receive a CD record-ing of the worship service, please contact Carla Taylor.
