But our newspapers and television screens fill our living rooms with the news of sin and death. Saving the world sounds like an old-fashioned ideal too. But that is what Christ came to do, and that’s our mission as His disciples. That takes real commitment! Tolstoy told the story of a young man on trial. He was a conscien- tious objector. In his testimony, he told the court that his objections were based on Christ’s teachings. The judge said, “ I understand, but you must be realistic. These laws you are talking about are the laws of the kingdom of God, and it has not come yet.” The young man replied, “Sir, I recognize that it has not come for you, nor yet for Russia, nor for the world. But it has come for me.” The kingdom of God has come for me too---and for you. The kingdom of God is anywhere that God reigns, and that is in your heart and mine. Therefore, Christ calls us to a discipleship worthy of sacrifice: So that we might help Him to save the world from sin and death. So that God’s kingdom might come to pass in this world. Because God’s kingdom has already come to pass in our hearts. Give Christ your heart. Give Christ your life. He will teach you how to bear your cross. And He will teach you how to wear your crown. G toriesSodOn Thursday we sent a message to our local email list that we were low on food in our Food Pantry. The response has been tremendous! As of Monday morning we have re-ceived so much food that we were able to stock our shelves and have enough back-up for more. Plus, funding to buy perishables for the food bags that we give to families.

Thank you to our congregation for your response and for sharing our need. Thank you to the local media, WREG and WMC for getting the word out to our city. What a great example of community support for those in need.

Shopping carts and tables full of food that has been dropped off by people in our community.

On Thursday these shelves were less than 25% stocked - now they are full and stocking continues!

Women’s Tuesday Bible StudyJoin us on Tuesday, September 13 in the St. Luke’s Library, MB 211, for an informational meeting about our fall study. Our plans are to use the bible study, Cov-enant, an in-depth study with an accessible message.

The biblical concept of covenant speaks to an endur-ing commitment between God and God’s fruitful peo-ple. It’s a promise -- to live in a loving relationship with and for each other. The purpose of Covenant Bible Study is to engage participants in conversations about this unique and special relationship -- as well as our relationships with each other and the world around us -- as we study the Bible together.

Women of all ages are welcome!

They seek to provide resources, including referral programs to other agen-cies and onsite counseling, for every needy individual who comes through their doors. They expressed a dire need for washcloths, bath towels, and hand towels. The UMW stepped up and presented Restoration House with 181 washcloths, 53 towels, and 10 hand towels!

Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him with strings and pipes!

(Adapted from Psalms 150)

Sunday September 25th we will come together for one worship service at 10:50am with the aid of strings and pipes. Led by the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir, Wesley Bell Choir, Guitar Club, and String Orchestra, this worship service focuses on the praise and adoration of our heav-enly Father through the transcendent gift of music. As mentioned in my last Epistle article, let’s work together to make this music season break records in attendance. This would be a perfect service to invite a friend or a neighbor to service. St. Luke’s not only has a history of great music, but a current standard of quality in worship and music. Join us for this special Sunday. I can think of no better way for the music department to really kick off its season than in praise to our God in this music rich service. If you have any questions or would like to participate in this service, please do not hesitate to contact me. In Christ,S.C. Toe, Director of Music Ministries

Join a Small Group The small group that once met at Dot Dickey’s house has moved their meetings to the church library, MB 211, on Monday’s from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Their next meeting will be on September 12th and they meet about every two weeks. This group is open to all. We begin with food and fellowship, then we light a candle inviting Christ into our midst. We use a devotional from "The Upper Room" to focus our attention and a discussion leads us toward our prayer request and the "How can we pray for you this week"?

It's never too early to start thinking about Christmas in July, that's Operation Christmas Child at least. As the school sales come out, please start thinking about those items that would go into your OCC shoebox. Right now at the Dollar Tree you could pick up flip flops, sunglasses, hard candy, coloring books, balls, dolls, hair bands, combs &

brushes, toothpaste and tootbrush, bar soap & washcloths. Put together your own box or buy a couple of things for the packing party. Look online at samaritanspurse.org/OCC to read all about this wonderful ministry for children around the world.

Wednesday Evening Bible StudyThe Word of God for the People of GodOn August 14 our choir sang the beauti-ful anthem Order My Steps which ended with these words:Show me how to walk - In Your WordShow me how to talk - In Your WordWhen I need a brand new song to sing,Show me how to let Your praises ringIn Your word, In Your wordPlease order my steps - In Your Word

The song made me ask myself, “How can I read God’s words in ways that bet-ter guide my walk and talk?” When our pastor asked me to lead the Wednesday night bible study I felt led to try to answer this question.Come, let’s look at ways to study the Bible and learn some practical tech-niques to help those words stick in our every day life. Please bring your bible, a pencil, and a seeking heart. Let’s all learn a new song to sing!Bettye Masters
