Hein rich D. “Dick” Hol land, for mer vis it ing scholar at theUni ver sity of Penn syl va nia, May 21st at 84. Born in Mannheim,Ger many, he es caped the Nazi era by way of the Kindertrans -port. He ob tained his chem is try de gree at Prince ton and thenserved briefly in the United States Army work ing on se cret pro -jects with Wernher von Braun. He earned his PhD at Co lum biaand headed one of the first geo chem is try re search groups.

Af ter a teach ing ca reer at Prince ton and Har vard, Dr. Hol landbe came a vis it ing scholar in Penn’s De part ment of Earth andEn vi ron men tal Sci ence. He was past pres i dent of the Geo chem i -cal So ci ety and was a fel low of the Amer i can Acad emy of Artsand Sci ences and a mem ber of the Na tional Acad emy of Sci -ences.

Annemarie Weber, re tired pro fes sor of bio chem is try and bio -phys ics at Penn, July 5th at 88. She joined Penn’s school ofmed i cine in 1972 as pro fes sor of bio chem is try. She was namedpro fes sor emerita in 1998 but con tin ued to teach med i cal stu -dents, earn ing the Pro vost’s award for dis tin guished teach ing in2001. Weber was a mem ber of the Amer i can Acad emy of Artsand Sci ences and a fel low of the Bio phys i cal So ci ety.

Bi og ra phy: Marisa Kozlowski was born in Ham burg, Ger many and raised in the town of Liv er -pool in up state New York. She re ceived an AB in Chem is try from Cor nell Uni ver sity in 1989and a PhD from the Uni ver sity of Cal i for nia at Berke ley in 1994 for work on the ra tio nal de signof en zyme in hib i tors un der the di rec tion of Paul Bart lett. Af ter study ing asym met ric ca tal y sis inthe lab o ra to ries of Da vid A. Ev ans at Har vard Uni ver sity as a Na tional Sci ence Foun da tion post -doc toral fel low, she joined the fac ulty at the Uni ver sity of Penn syl va nia in 1997 and cur rentlyholds the rank of Pro fes sor of Chem is try. The ma jor fo cus of Pro fes sor Kozlowski’s re search isthe de vel op ment of meth ods for the de sign of asym met ric cat a lysts. Two clear chal lenges in thearea of asym met ric syn the sis are the rapid iden ti fi ca tion of ap pro pri ate cat a lysts for given pro -cesses and the de vel op ment of cost-ef fec tive cat a lysts for large-scale ap pli ca tions. Pro fes sorKozlowski’s con tri bu tions have been rec og nized by a DuPont Young In ves ti ga tor Award in 1998, an NSF CA REER Award in 2001, an Al fred P. Sloan Re search Fel low ship, the Kahn Award forDis tin guished Teach ing by an As sis tant Pro fes sor at the Uni ver sity of Penn syl va nia, an Amer i can Can cer So ci ety Be gin ning Re search Scholar Award in 2002, an ACS Travel Prog ress Award in2007 and the Phil a del phia Or ganic Chem ists’ Club Award in 2010. FROM THE FALL COUN CIL MEET ING—Tony Ad di son

The ACS Coun cil met in Phil a del phia on Au gust 22nd. As of that date, the Phil a del phia Na tionalMeet ing it self had drawn 13,320 reg is trants, in clud ing 7,817 reg u lar at ten dees and 3,177 stu -dents. This is maybe 1,200 fewer than ex pected, and the rea sons are not clear, but my hy poth e sisis “Phil a del phia fa tigue” - i.e., the folks who had not seen Philly since 1984 got to see it al readyin 2004 and 2008.

From our lo cal Sec tion, Ju dith Currano (Uni ver sity of Penn syl va nia) was elected in na tional com -pe ti tion to the Coun cil Com mit tee on Com mit tees (yes, it’s true), while Bonnie Lawlor (NFAIS,Phil a del phia) be came a can di date for Di rec tor-at-Large. Thomas Barton (Uni ver sity of Iowa) and Luis Echegoyen (Uni ver sity of Texas) were an nounced as Pres i dent-Elect 2013 can di dates forFall’s up com ing elec tions.

The Com mit tee on Meet ings and Ex po si tions is hop ing to elim i nate the print ver sion on-site pro -gram books by the 2013 Fall na tional meet ing in In di a nap o lis; this saves $$, and should shortenthe cur rently very long ab stract lead times.

The So ci ety’s ac tual bud get is emerg ing in the black with re spect to the pro jected bud get, in gross dol lar terms. This year’s over all bud get ap proaches $490M, sug gest ing that in 2013, the So ci etywill be come a half-bil lion dol lar op er a tion.

The Coun cil re ceived, but voted not to ap prove, a Pe ti tion on Can di date Com ment in C&ENwhich sought to re strict can di dates for elec tion to the Board of Di rec tors from pub lish ing com -ments in C&EN from May through the bal lot ing pe riod. The Coun cil also voted (64% to 36%) to not ap prove a Pe ti tion on In ter na tional Chem i cal Sci ences Chap ters Funds which sought to clar -ify how the Board of Di rec tors may grant funds to in ter na tional chap ters for spe cific pur poses.The tenor of the dis cus sions was that these were not re ally es sen tial amend ments to the By laws.

Coun cil also re ceived one pe ti tion for an amend ment to the ACS Con sti tu tion and By laws forcon sid er ation (not ac tion): The Pe ti tion to Amend Na tional Elec tion Pro ce dures seeks to shortenthe cam paign pe riod for can di dates for Pres i dent-Elect and to charge the Com mit tee on Nom i na -tions and Elec tions (N&E) with pro pos ing two can di dates for Pres i dent-Elect. Cur rently, N&Epro poses four nom i nees from which Coun cil se lects two can di dates on Coun cil floor in Spring. Un der the pe ti tion, Coun cil would no lon ger vote on a list of nom i nees. The pro cess for pe ti tioncan di dates whose names are put for ward out side the above pro cess, would not change. This pe ti -tion will be on the Coun cil agenda for ac tion at the 2013 spring meet ing in New Or leans, and issure to gen er ate an i mated dis cus sion.

Coun cil voted to es tab lish a Joint Board-Coun cil Com mit tee on Se nior Chem ists, mean ing thoseover 60 years of age. Given the de mo graph ics of the Coun cil, it was per haps no sur prise that this was brought to vote with very lit tle discussion.

The num ber of ACS’s do mes tic reg u lar mem bers (pay ing full dues) has de clined, but com pen -sated for by in creases in in ter na tional reg u lar mem bers and un der grad u ate stu dent mem bers.

The Pres i dent’s spe cial dis cus sion item was “What ma jor ef forts should ACS pur sue to help al le -vi ate wa ter and other global chal lenges?” More than 30 Coun cil ors en gaged in a dis cus sion ofthis global chal lenge and of fered some sug ges tions for action.

As of this meet ing, there was still no opin ion an nounced by the Ohio Su preme Count on ACS’sap peal in the Leadscope lit i ga tion case.

The Importance of Shape – A Primer for Chemical Consultants Abstract: Our Speaker, Dr. Roman Bielski, knows a thing or two about shapes. His talk requires little or no knowledge of chemistry, just an open mind. Some spatial imagination may help but is not essential. The talk will concentrate on geometry of two and three dimensional structures belonging to small and large molecules. He will briefly discuss shapes and structures of a chemical version of a platonic solid (dodecahedrane), Mőbius strips, rotaxanes, catenanes and various self-assemblies. Architectures of natural compounds such as helices, double helices and other 3D structures of natural macro-molecules will also be discussed. Geometries of some polymers including dendrimers and compounds that have not been synthesized yet will be presented.

Bio: Roman Bielski was born in Katowice, Poland. He graduated (majoring in chemical engineering) from the Warsaw University of Technology and received his PhD in organic chemistry (under the direction of Prof. Osman Achmatowicz) in 1974. He carried out his post-doctoral research with Sir Derek Barton at Imperial College in London. After spending several years in academia (Warsaw Agricultural University, Lehigh University and Cornell University) he worked in and co-founded a few small biotech companies. In addition to being an acknowledged expert in chiral chemistry he is the Chief Technical Officer for Value Recovery, a Partner in ChemInnolab and an Adjunct Professor at the Pharmaceutical Department of Wilkes University. He has published about three dozen papers and co-authored sixteen patents.

THE FRIENDS OF THE JO SEPH PRIESTLEYHOUSE AN NUAL DIN NER AND MEET ING—Alan R. Heldon

I am happy to re port that on Tues day, Sep tem ber 18, 2012, I at tended the An nual Din ner andMeet ing of the Friends of the Jo seph Priestley House. Three years ago I re ported in the Cat a lystthat cuts in state fund ing were go ing to force the Jo seph Priestley House to close. Fund ing cutselim i nated the two paid staff po si tions and most of the pro grams. For tu nately, the Priestley House has not closed and con tin ues to of fer his toric and ed u ca tional pro grams. While many in di vid u alsand or ga ni za tions, in clud ing the ACS, worked to keep the House open, much of the credit for this tran si tion from a paid staff to an all un paid staff and for the fine pro grams now of fered must go to the Friends of the Jo seph Priestley House.

Jo seph Priestley, the man who dis cov ered ox y gen and the fa ther of chem is try in this coun try,lived the fi nal years of his life in Northumberland, PA. The Jo seph Priestley House con tains thelab o ra tory in which Priestley dis cov ered car bon mon ox ide.

While not the birth place of the Amer i can Chem i cal So ci ety, Priestley’s house was the place of itsin cep tion. A meet ing of Amer i can chem ists at the house in 1874 on the 100th an ni ver sary ofPriestley’s dis cov ery of ox y gen led to the for ma tion of the ACS in 1876.

Be fore the din ner the Friends of the Jo seph Priestley House held a re cep tion for the open ing of anew, per ma nent ex hibit – The Jo seph Priestley Timeline. This ex hibit pres ents Priestley’s life oneight pan els in in ter vals of about 7 to 15 years. Each panel pres ents the events of Priestley’s lifein those years, his growth and his ac com plish ments.

The din ner and meet ing was at tended by about 40 mem bers of the Friends of the Jo seph Priestley House, of whom the great ma jor ity were chem ists. The af ter din ner guest speaker was CarlaMulford, As sis tant Pro fes sor of Eng lish at Penn State. She dis cussed the re la tion ship be tweenPriestley and Benjamin Frank lin and their in ter est in find ing ways to pub lish and dis sem i natetheir re search find ings.

Un der grad u ate stu dents from ACS Stu dent Af fil i ate Chap ters in the Phil a del phia Sec tion areen cour aged to con sider at tend ing Na tional Meet ings of the Amer i can Chem i cal So ci ety. In thisre gard, a lim ited amount of fund ing will be pro vided to chap ters re quest ing spon sor ship basedon the fol low ing gen eral guide lines.

Gen eral Guide lines

1) First con sid er ation will be given to stu dent(s) who wish to at tend a Na tional Meet ing of theAmer i can Chem i cal So ci ety (ACS) to give a pre sen ta tion (oral or poster). Stu dents at tend ingfor other pur poses, i.e., to re ceive an award or at tend a spe cific work shop, etc., are also el i gi ble to ap ply for sup port.

2) The stu dent(s) must have re quested sup port from their Col lege or Uni ver sity (in clud ing de part -ment and/or ad vi sor) to as sist in de fray ing the travel costs. Please at tach a copy of the cor re -spon dence.

3) The stu dent(s) should have a clear idea of the ben e fits of at tend ing the con fer ence. Please at -tach a short para graph from each stu dent in di cat ing which ses sions, in clud ing work shops, etc.,the stu dent plans to at tend and why these ses sions will help them ob tain their pro fes sionalgoals.

All ap pli ca tions must in clude an item ized list of the pro jected costs of the trip, i.e, reg is tra tion,air-fare, train or car ex penses, ho tel, etc., and in di cate which of these costs (if any) are be ingpro vided by other sources.

An ap pli ca tion for travel sup port can be made at any time to the Phil a del phia Sec tion, but forfull con sid er ation, the ap pli ca tion must be re ceived by the Sec tion Of fice by Jan u ary 31st for the Spring meet ing and May 31st for the Fall meet ing.

The Phil a del phia Sec tion will eval u ate all ap pli ca tions re ceived by the dead line and vote at theFeb ru ary meet ing for the Spring ACS meet ing ap pli ca tions and at the June meet ing for the FallACS meet ing ap pli ca tions. The amount of fund ing avail able may be in flu enced by the num berof ap pli ca tions for a par tic u lar meet ing and the costs of at tend ing that meet ing, i.e., where it isbe ing held.

The suc cess ful ap pli cant must sub mit a brief re port high light ing the con fer ence ex pe ri ence tothe Phil a del phia Sec tion at the com ple tion of the trip. The orig i nal re ceipts should also be sub -mit ted to the Sec tion Of fice for reimbursement.

Na tional ACS Ca reer Ser vices is roll ing out the new ACS Ca reerPath ways work shops at the Na -tional Meeting in Au gust inPhil a del phia. The new struc ture in volves a work shop on find ingone’s ca reer path, fol lowed byfour in di vid ual work shops about one of the ca reer paths (in dus try, gov ern ment, ac a de mia, and en -tre pre neur ship) and cul mi nat ingwith a work shop on in ter view -ing. There is a po ten tial that Ca -reer Ser vices may wish to havean ACS Ca reer Con sul tant fromNa tional who is trained in theen tre pre neur ship work shop topres ent this work shop for one of Ca reer Ser vices’ fu ture ca reerwork shops. How ever, com pen -sa tion to the con sul tant for pre -sent ing in ad di tion to travelex pense re im burse ment may bere quired from the Sec tion as anex pec ta tion from Na tional.
