638th BOARD OF DIRECTORS' MEETING Thursday, March 15, 2012

Department of Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia

Present: R. Ewing, D. Cichowicz, M. Cichowicz, D. Cook, E. Davis, S. Fleming, D. Hausner, K.

Lysko, C. Palmer, K. Shaginaw, W. Smith, T. Straub, J. Summers-Gates, D. Thomas, J. Tierney, M.

Tunick, D. Wolf.

Excused: A. DeMasi, J.P. Northrop, V. Tortorelli.

Also: C.J. Bruner, S. Burcham, J. Crawford, E. Harper, A. Heldon, K. Lammers, O. Komova, J.

Martino and W. Rice.

The meeting was called to order by Chair Ewing at 4:00 PM. The minutes of the February meeting

were approved (T. Straub motion, J. Summers-Gates second).

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

A. Career Services: J. Martino

There are the following corrections to the February minutes under Career Services:

“YCC: Top Priority this year:” Both YCC and Career Services are top priorities as discussed

by the Board of Directors.

“3 core members, 2 advisory:” Career Services is now structured as a 3 core member, 2

advisory member committee. P. Fishbein, B. Tsuie and I are the core members; C. Hamilton

of the Life Science Career Alliance and J.P. Northrop are the advisory members.

“Paul Fishbein and Tsuie will coordinate:” P. Fishbein is coordinating efforts to construct a

concept statement to define the Career Services Committee. B. Tsuie is not, although all

committee members are participating in the process.

J.P. Northrop, not P. Fishbein, submitted the Career Services Committee activities in 2011for

a CHEMLUMINARY award.

The February 29 Leap Day networking event was a success with 30 participating. A Survey-

Monkey survey was very positive, especially concerning the informal nature of the event. The

next networking event is June 19 at Houlihan’s in Plymouth Meeting. It will use eventbrite for

sign up and it will also be in the Catalyst. The May 17 workshop will also use eventbrite. It will

be at the La Salle center in Plymouth Meeting. J.P. Northrop and J. Martino and others will be

speakers. The next meeting of the Committee will be tomorrow (March 16) for future planning.

B. Younger Chemists Committee: K. Lammers

On March 22 there will be a YCC happy hour at the Field House in Philadelphia. The YCC is

planning an event at Dave and Buster’s on August 20 during the National Meeting. It will need

some underwriting, using National funds first, Section funds second. They have submitted a

proposal for an Innovative Project Grant from National for a career symposium at the fall National

Meeting. They should hear by June. The Poster Session had a large number submitted so 20 prizes

were awarded, 10 graduate, 7 undergrad and 3 high school. A. Addison and S. Haynie both donated

prize money. At the November meeting the program should be reviewed.

OFFICERS’ REPORTS:

A. Chair R. Ewing

A. Heldon and others are preparing a letter to be sent to Governor Corbett concerning the

defunding of the Delaware Valley Science Council, and the Governor’s School for the past two

years. He wants to send about 150 letters to legislators, concerning STEM education. Heldon

will be going to Harrisburg in June to discuss this. R. Ewing and S. Burcham will use their

contacts to further this. S. Fleming asked for the source of the data in the letter. It may be

www.aboutastra or just astra – A. Heldon will forward to the Section Office to be forwarded to

the Board.

The Science Festival: J. Tierney will do last year’s activity. He needs about 150 handouts from

J. Summers-Gates. W. Smith will participate again and the YCC has sign up sheets.

April 12 is Heritage Day at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF); registration is required by

March 30. R. Ewing will forward the info to the Section Office to be forwarded to the Board. T.

Tritton of CHF is the tentative speaker for the April meeting. The May meeting will have brief

talks by the teacher awardees. For the June meeting R. Ewing is considering CHF – any

suggestions for speakers?

B. Secretary D. Wolf: no report.

C. Treasurer D. Cichowicz

The Section has received $500 seed money for the National Meeting from National. We are still

waiting for the eventbrite receipts for the February meeting. The treasurer’s report was

approved.

OTHER BUSINESS:

A. S. Burcham reported on the planned Chemistry and the Law Division program at the fall

National Meeting. It will be an August 20 all day symposium on the Innocence Project. They

would like help publicizing it – put it in the Catalyst, LinkedIn, and Twitter. There will be a

reception at CHF from 5-7 PM. The location of the symposium is still to be determined. S.

Burcham will forward an advertisement for it to the Section Office for distribution to J. Martino

and K. Lammers. Andy Gay, Esq., was suggested as a possible source of funding.

B. Women Chemists Committee

K. Shaginaw is asking for volunteers for the PAGES™ program on April 21.

C. Chemical Education

D. Cook reported that the new guidelines for chemical education are almost final.

D. Council Affairs

J. Crawford will have a report on the March Council meeting in April.

The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, E. Harper acting as Secretary.

C. Government Affairs: A. Heldon reported that PA GALA will host a workshop at the National Meeting on how to see

legislators to discuss chemistry and chemical education. Separately, OPA (ACS – National) will hold a social event at the national meeting.

The committee has sent letters to approximately 100 Pennsylvania senators and representatives expressing ACS concern over the proposed cuts to the education budget. It was asked if we could send another letter about the defunding of the Science in Motion program. V. Tortorelli is going to Harrisburg about this in May. The Board would need to approve such a letter before it is sent. Heldon plans to send the SIM letter in May and requested postage. A motion to approve the postage was approved with two abstentions.

D. Women Chemists Committee: E. Harper reported for K. Shaginaw that there is a PAGES™ program this Saturday (April 21).

Dr. Lisa Laffend of DuPont will be the keynote speaker. Plenty of girls and volunteers are signed up for the event. The PAGES™ dates for the next academic year are November 3, 2012 and March 23, 2013.

E. Merck Indexes: E. Harper reported that the Section has received two thank-you notes from students who

received Merck Indexes from us at Montgomery County Science Fairs. One donated it to his school chemistry department.

V. Tortorelli motioned to adjourn the meeting; A. Heldon seconded. Meeting adjourned at 4:50 PM. Respectfully submitted, Alan Heldon, Secretary and E. Harper acting as Secretary
