Ab stract: The fo cus of myre search over the last de cadehas been on de vel op ingsemiclassical (SC) the ory into a prac ti cal way for add ingquan tum ef fects to clas si calmo lec u lar dy nam ics (MD)sim u la tions of large, com plexmo lec u lar sys tems. A par tic -u larly in ter est ing and im por -tant as pect of this is theabil ity to de scribe elec tron i -cally non-adi a batic pro cessesin a fash ion that treats nu clear and elec tronic de grees of free -dom (DOF) in an equiv a lentdy nam i cal frame work. Thisis ac com plished by us ing amodel de vel oped by Meyerand Miller (MM) [J. Chem.Phys. 70, 3214 (1979)] for re -plac ing a fi nite set of elec -tronic states of a mo lec u larsys tem (i.e., the var i ous po -ten tial en ergy sur faces andtheir cou plings) by a clas si calHamiltonian in volv ing the nu -clear and (col lec tive) elec -

tronic DOF. Much later Stock and Thoss (ST) [Phys. Rev.Lett. 78, 578 (1997)] showedthat the MM model is ac tu ally not a ‘model,’ but rather a‘rep re sen ta tion’ of the nu -clear-elec tronic sys tem; i.e.,were the MM nu clear-elec -tronic Hamiltonian taken as aHamiltonian op er a tor andused in the Schröding er equa -tion, the ex act (quan tum) nu -clear-elec tronic dy nam icswould be ob tained. In re centyears var i ous ini tial value rep -re sen ta tions (IVRs) of SC the -ory have been used with theMM Hamiltonian to de scribeelec tron i cally non-adi a baticpro cesses. Of spe cial in ter estis the fact that al though theclas si cal tra jec to ries gen er -ated by the MM Hamiltonian(and which are the ‘in put’ foran SC-IVR treat ment) are‘Ehrenfest tra jec to ries,’ whenthey are used within theSC-IVR frame work the nu -clear mo tion emerges from re -gions of non-adiabaticity onone po ten tial en ergy sur face(PES) or an other, and not onan av er age PES as in the tra -di tional Ehrenfest model. Very re cently an even moream bi tious SC de scrip tion ofelec tronic DOF—one whichre places the fermionic cre -ation and an ni hi la tion op er a -tors in the gen eral sec ond-quantized many-electron

Hamiltonian by func tions ofclas si cal ac tion-an gle vari -ables—has been seen to pro -vide an ex cel lent de scrip tionof trans mis sion of elec tronsthrough a mo lec u lar junc tion. This opens up the pos si bil ityof be ing able to use clas si calMD sim u la tions (of elec tronic and nu clear DOF) to modelthe many as pects of cur rentin ter est in ‘mo lec u lar elec -tron ics.’

NOMINATIONS INVITED FOR THE

2012 PHILADELPHIA SECTION AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY AWARD

The Philadelphia Section invites its members and regional and topical groups to consider recommending candidate(s) for the Philadelphia Section Award. This Award recognizes an individual, “who, by conspicuous scientific achievement through research, has made important contributions to man's knowledge and thereby aided the public appreciation of the profession.” Any member of the American Chemical Society, Philadelphia Section, may be nominated for this award. Recent awardees include: Larry Sneddon (University of Pennsylvania), Eric Borguet (Temple University) and John J. Baldwin (Vitae Pharmaceuticals).

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING NOMINATION

(1) The nominator should provide detailed biographical data of the nominee, showing educational and employment data, a list of publications and a record of other accomplishments pertinent to consideration for this award.

(2) One or two seconding letters (at least one of which should be from a person in an organization other than

that of the nominee) should be requested in support of the nomination. (3) Nominators and seconders should be identified with addresses and telephone numbers so that they can be

contacted, if necessary, for additional information. (4) Unsuccessful nominees from previous years may be renominated. In fairness to the nominee, however,

renominations must be accompanied by an updating of the nominee's biographical data and list of accomplishments in order to make the nomination competitive. Unsuccessful nominees who have been considered three years in a row should not be renominated for the fourth year in succession without prior consultation by the nominator with the chair of the Awards Committee.

Nomination forms are available from the Section Office. Contact the Administrative Secretary, Mrs. Libby Harper at: Philadelphia Section, ACS Department of Chemistry University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA 19104-6323 (215) 382-1589; email [email protected] The completed packet of nomination materials may be emailed to [email protected] or mailed by March 29, 2012 to Mr. John P. We are seek ing help from the mem ber ship of the Phil a del phia Sec tion of the ACS. In most cases, thiswould only re quire in di cat ing an ap pro pri ate con tact per son. The Phil a del phia Sec tion of the Amer i canChem i cal So ci ety has de vel oped a web site that will post sum mer po si tions avail able in a lab o ra tory set -ting for un der grad u ate stu dents ma jor ing in chem is try or re lated ar eas.

We are seek ing com pa nies, gov ern men tal agen cies and non-profit in sti tu tions that have sum mer po si tions avail able for the afore men tioned group of un der grad u ates. These po si tions can be in ei ther a re search or a non-re search lab o ra tory en vi ron ment. We would like to post the in for ma tion about these po si tions on the Phil a del phia Sec tion of the Amer i can Chem i cal So ci ety’s website:http://philadelphia.sites.acs.org/internshipquestionnaire.htm. There is no cost to post a po si tion; there is no ob li ga tion to con tinue this po si tion from one year to the next; you may have it re moved at any time, and the or ga ni za tional con tact for ap pli cants may be an in di vid ual or re fer ral to the com pany web site.

If you hire un der grad u ates in chem is try or re lated ar eas to work in a lab o ra tory set ting, we urge you to go to our website and com plete the ques tion naire.
