Fishing is a favorite pastime of people all over the world. It also is a great way

to feed your family. You’ve probably heard the proverb: “Give a man a fish,

and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”

Let’s catch some fishy Tidbits!➧ Valentine’s Day 2011 was a big day for a fisherman from Vicksburg, Mississippi, who caught a 327-pound (148 kg), 8-foot, 5.25-inch (2.6 m) alligator gar while fishing at Chotard Lake. SeniorNews LineLet’s take a walk down memory lane, shall we? We seniors have seen a lot of changes in the world since we were born.In 1941, gas was 19 cents a gallon, which equates to $2.95 in today’s money. Bread was 8 cents ($1.24 today) and milk was 34 cents ($5.29 today). The very next year the production of autos was halted.A car cost around $800 ($12,000 today) but after we were attacked at Pearl Harbor, rationing went into effect and car owners were limited to five tires. Other things were quickly added to the rationing list: bicycles, stoves, gas, coffee, butter and sugar. Most homes had “Victory” gardens in the yard.In 1946, rationing finally ended, and the use of the car increased. The first drive-in bank teller opened. We had punchboards instead of lottery tickets, and Slinkys and Tinkertoys, as well as Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. If we had a phone, it was probably on a party line, and we had a number like SYcamore

4-0160 or 0551-J1.The first computer (ENIAC) was built. It weighed 30 tons and took up 1,800 square feet. The first Roosevelt dime was issued (worth $1.20 today), and only 6,000 families owned television sets.By 1952, nearly 17 million families owned televisions and we were introduced to TV dinners. We watched the debuts of “Dragnet” and “The Today Show,” and “The African Queen” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the movies. The Roosevelt dime’s buying power went down to 83 cents.Have you considered creating a memory book for the future generations of your family?

issues, including death rates and patient experiences. Put in your ZIP code and select either General, Medical Conditions or Surgical Procedures. Click on Find Hospitals. You’ll be given a list of medical facilities within 50 miles. Check the boxes down the left side for facilities you want to compare. If your closest VA Medical Center isn’t within that 50 miles, it won’t show up. Instead use the ZIP code of the Medical Center. You’ll find that a lot of categories don’t show any VA information at all.The VA site [www.hospitalcompare.va.gov] compares information between VA hospitals only. It tracks heart problems and pneumonia, as well as infection, respiratory issues and more. Pick a link on the left (Medical or Surgical), select your state from the drop-down menu and scroll down to click on an issue. The next screen will be a full explanation of the quality measure and what it means. If there are multiple centers in your state, you’ll see the results for all of them.Your best bet is to gather the information from both sites and combine it.

Comparing HospitalsSince last year we’ve been able to check out the quality of care at VA Medical Centers on the Department of Veterans Affairs website. Now the VA has added its information to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services Hospital Compare website. The VA site was limited to medical and surgical statistics, but now we’re able to compare local non-VA hospitals with the VA hospitals in additional areas such as heart issues and pneumonia. To get the information you need, however, you might have to check both sites, as the information isn’t posted on the same schedule. Neither site is intuitive for navigation, so instructions are below:The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services Hospital Compare [www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov] has results for a number of categories of patient care

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The typically tidy Ram or Ewe might want to butt out until things are settled on the home front. But get involved and let your Ovine sense of order help restore domestic tranquility.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s flair for fine-tuning complicated fiscal dealings comes in handy when an unexpected financial problem arises. Stay with it until it’s resolved to your satisfaction.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family aspects remain strong. There might be some unresolved difficulties, but continued attempts to smooth things over eventually prove to be successful. A major purchase looms.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A promise that was made but never kept suddenly re-emerges in your life. You now have to decide if you’re still interested in what it offers or if you’ve moved past it.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance comes to unattached Leos and Leonas who have been waiting for Cupid to target them for far too long. Domestic purr-fection is also enhanced for paired Felines.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You need to take a much-needed break from that demanding project before too much energy-draining tension sets in. And don’t be ashamed to ask for help.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Change makes demands that you might find unwelcome at this time. But instead of concentrating on the short run, look toward potential benefits down the road.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You have a gift for reviving projects that seem beyond repair. Use that same ability to restore a relationship that seems to have turned from loving to lifeless.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect to be asked to use your combined wisdom and humor to resolve a problem. After all, folks not only value your advice, they also like how you give it.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Most people consider you solid and steady. But you also can be quite capricious (which is a Latin word for “describing the behavior of Goats”) when it suits your needs.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) People treat you as you wish to be treated. So if you want a change in your relationship, make it happen. Also expect someone to reveal some long-held secrets.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Stay with the decision you made, despite a sudden torrent of advice to the contrary from well-meaning people. Remember: You know your needs better than anyone.YOU BORN THIS WEEK: You like things tidy, with no loose ends. You also enjoy research and would make an excellent investigative reporter or scientist.

WHAT A CATCH! (continued):➧ Not as big as a whale shark, but to be feared more, is the bull shark. Bull sharks are very aggressive and can be found in freshwater as well as saltwater. They have been found in the Amazon and the Mississippi Rivers. They get their name from the fact that they head-butt their prey and have tough attitudes. ➧ A fish that appears to have a grouchy attitude is the grouper. With its lower jar protruding in a nasty under-bite, this fish is not good looking but is very tasty. This relative of the sea bass is a healthy favorite with restaurants and home cooks. ➧ The largest grouper on record caught with a rod and reel was pulled out of the water in Destin, Florida, on December 22, 1985. It weighed a whopping 436 pounds (198 kg)!➧ There are 162 species of grouper, with Red, Nassau and Black, being the most common in America. They have some really odd little “friends” that help them. Cleaner fish are tiny fish that swim inside a grouper’s mouth and eat the food that is trapped between the big fish’s teeth. Who needs a dentist?! ➧ Grouper are bottom feeders, which means they typically swim and eat at the bottom of the water. Catfish are also bottom feeders. Some are even called “mudcats.” ➧ The 36th Annual World Catfish Festival was held in Belzoni, Humphreys County, Mississippi, on April 2 this year. This family event celebrates the

spread across the country. With its consistent white meat and mild flavor, it is now the fifth most popular fish in America.➧ Some really strange nicknames are given to another fish that is a favorite on dinner tables. “Whales,” Soakers” and “Barn Doors” are monikers for large halibut.➧ Halibut the size of one caught in 2003 in the Bering Sea, west of Anchorage, Alaska, definitely deserve any of those nicknames. The giant was 8 feet, 2 inches (2.4 m) long and weighed an estimated 533 pounds (242 kg). Five people struggled to pull it in! ➧ Halibut has firm, flaky snow-white meat. The fillets are called “fletches.” One halibut has four fletches.

Don’t get suCkereD by Job-Hunt sCams

Hunting for a job shouldn’t have to include protecting yourself from possible scams, but the reality is that you must if you’re doing your job search online.Fake job listings are everywhere: online job boards, email and phony company websites. Some are very creative and look authentic. Here are some keywords that are indicative of likely scams: Internet business development or coaching, business opportunity, work at home, refundable fee, guaranteed income, undisclosed federal jobs, guaranteed job, consultant and easy work.In spite of the ease of communicating via the Internet, if you’ve received an email offer or see an online posting and don’t know if it’s genuine, ask for a phone number to call and speak to a human. Check out the phone number before you call. Try www.anywho.com and click on Reverse Lookup, which also will give you the address. Do a Google search for the address, too.Learn how to tell the true address of an online link by putting your cursor over it and seeing if it matches the words before you click. Beware especially of any Internet address that consists mostly of numbers with a pattern like this: xxx.xx.xxxx. That’s an indication of a new Internet address. If you get anonymous email and someone claims to want to hire you for a job you don’t even remember applying for (quite possible if you’re sending out lots of resumes), scammers likely will ask for information such as your Social Security number, date of birth, home address and even your credit-card availability and card number.Verify, verify, verify before you give out personal information, including your Social Security number. If the job is a scam and you provide that number, as well as your name and address, you’ve just gift wrapped the means for identity theft. With email, a genuine address should include the company’s name, not so-and-so at Gmail or Yahoo.com. You, on the other hand, can make use of one of those temporary email accounts because in time it’s sure to fill with spam.If you sign up with a big online job list such as Monster.com, use a P.O box for your home address. Use an initial for your first name.Best bet: Hook up with multiple in-person personnel agencies or recruiters. They’ll have access to the real jobs.

catfish farming industry that started in the area in the 1960s. Since that time, U.S. catfish farming has grown tremendously. There are 466 million pounds (211,374 metric tons) processed annually. Of the 95,200 acres (38,526 ha) in the United States devoted to catfish farming, 64,000 acres (25,900 ha) are in Mississippi. About 95 percent of the farm-raised catfish in the United States is raised in the Southern states of Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama and Louisiana. ➧ Farm-raised catfish are not bottom feeders like wild catfish. They are raised in ponds of fresh water that are only 4 to 6 feet deep. The catfish are fed high protein feed pellets, made from soybean meal, corn and rice that float on top of the water. No. 1 in the South for many years, the popularity of catfish has

Pets Are Important Part of the FamilyBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAwS: I wanted to add my two cents to the question, “Are pets people too?” I believe they are a big part of a family. Animals are smarter than people. Dogs are the only ones who are so happy to see us when we come home! — Anna L. M., Melbourne, Fla.DEAR ANNA: You make a good point! I’ve never seen my dogs mope when I walked in the door; rather, they always are right there to greet me. Pets do enrich our lives, and many of us consider them to be a part of the family.DEAR PAwS: I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be alive without my dog “Blake.” I’m a senior citizen; my wife passed away three years ago, and most of my children live too far away to visit regularly. Blake sleeps at the side of my bed every night and at exactly 6 a.m. every morning he sits up next to me, licks my face until I’m awake. He’s so happy when I get out of

bed that he turns in circles nonstop until I get dressed so I can take him out for his morning walk.At my last checkup, my doctor said those morning walks are helping keep my blood pressure under control and I seem in good spirits. I do enjoy taking care of Blake and he’s the one who kept me going after my wife passed. Blake is family to me and no one can tell me different. Sign me — Stubborn Old Bob in Palmyra, N.Y.DEAR BoB: That’s telling ‘em! Thank you for telling your story. It sounds like Blake is taking care of you as much as you take care of him.

DEAR DR. DoNoHUE: I have sleep apnea. Before being treated by a sleep specialist, I was very sleepy during the day and had no energy. My specialist prescribed a mask that pumps air into my nose. It helps somewhat. Later a friend told me about Provigil. It makes me feel much better, but I am not 100 percent. What else could help me? — J.K.ANSwER: “Apnea” is Greek for “no breathing.” Sleep apnea is periods during sleep when a person stops breathing for 10 or more seconds. There can be five to 30 or more such spells every hour. Quite often, an apneic period is preceded by snoring that gets progressively louder and louder. At the end of the no-breathing episode, the person grunts and half-wakens and then starts breathing again. This fragments sleep and leaves the person sleepy and without energy the next day.

The problem lies in a narrowed passageway for air as it travels through the throat en route to the lungs. Redundant throat tissue blocks the natural airflow.Weight loss is one way to get rid of excess throat tissue, if one is overweight. Don’t drink any alcohol from the evening meal on, because it relaxes throat tissue. The mask you wear is called CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). It delivers air under pressure so it can pass through the obstruction in the throat. Don’t abandon it.You can ask your dentist about fashioning a device that keeps the jaw forward during sleep. That opens the throat too. Stick with your Provigil, since it’s working for you. There are a number of surgical procedures that can pare excess tissue from the back of the throat. And there is a new remedy called the Pillar Palatal Implant System. It consists of three small, plastic rods inserted into the back part of the upper palate to keep it propped up. For some, a droopy palate obstructs airflow.Since you’re doing pretty well with the way things are going now, you might not want to upset things with any more treatment.

DEAR DR. DoNoHUE: I am a 68-year-old male in excellent health who exercises regularly, but I have trouble sleeping for more than five or six hours a night. To get

the desired seven to eight hours of sleep, I’ve been taking a sleep aid (diphenhydramine), and have not noticed any unpleasant side effects. Are there any long-term problems with taking this sleep aid on a frequent basis? — S.P.ANSwER: Diphenhydramine is one of the first antihistamines to be marketed. One brand name is Benadryl. Sleepiness is a side effect of most of the early antihistamines. In other words, you take the medicine for its side effect of drowsiness.Millions of people have taken this drug since it was first marketed. You can take it on a regular basis. Why are you convinced that six hours of sleep is insufficient for you? Do you feel tired during the day with only six hours? If you feel fine or if you take a nap during the day, that might be all the sleep you actually need.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters

WHAT A CATCH! (continued):The real delicacies coming from halibut though are the “cheeks.” They, obviously, come from the head. ➧ Halibut are from a group of mostly saltwater, bottom-dwelling fish called flatfish. When these fish hatch, their eyes are normally on each side of the head. After they grow a bit, one eye moves closer to the other, and the mouth twists until the eyes and mouth are on top. The underside of a flatfish is white, but the top may be brightly colored. Many flatfish can change colors to match their surroundings, making for good camouflage. Some other flatfish are sole, turbot and the odd-looking flounder. ➧ We’ve saved what has become one of the best-

selling catches for last in this Tidbits. Salmon has been growing in popularity, with many health reports sending it to the top of the charts for human consumption. It is considered one of the healthiest fish to eat: high in omega-3 essential fatty acids and protein and low in calories and saturated fat. ➧ Salmon is not only good for your heart and overall health, studies have also shown that it is great for your skin. Dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone has written several books explaining how a diet consisting of high amounts of salmon can lead to wrinkle-free skin. ➧ Hopefully you have “caught” the message in this Tidbits: Fish are fun to catch and great for eating!

Truex Works Through a Season of Bad LuckIt’s tempting to think that Martin Truex Jr. has clouds hanging over him similar to the ones that enshrouded

Watkins Glen International.Only it’s been overcast in Truex’s career for a good bit of the time since June 4, 2007, when he won a NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. He finished 11th in the point standings that year. Through 2009, Truex competed for Dale Earnhardt Inc. He now drives the No. 56 NAPA Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing. In the past three years, Truex has finished 15th, 23rd and 22nd, respectively, in the standings. Entering the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen, he ranked 22nd.“Bad luck is a tough thing,” Truex said. “I’ve had my share of it the past few years.“People say you make your own luck, and you do, somewhat. But there are times when there is nothing you can do about it.”Truex, 31, doesn’t have much to show for the current season. He finished sixth at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the season’s third race. Since

then he has collected eighth-place finishes at Dover, Infineon (Sonoma, Calif.) and Loudon, N.H.“Luck plays a big part in what we do,” said the Mayetta, N.J., native. “It takes a million things to go right to win one of these races. It only takes one to go wrong…a flat tire, the caution coming at the wrong time, a debris caution after you pit under

green…things like that.“There are some things where it doesn’t matter what you do, you can’t change them — and that’s luck. And it’s tough to deal with, especially when you’ve had a good day and your team’s done everything right.”At this point, making the Chase is outside the realm of practical consideration.“You have to just forget about last week, move forward, try to do the best you can with what you have and you know when your team is doing

good and when they’re not,” said Truex. “You just have to forget about all those bad things and push forward and work on the things you can control.”

] Weihenmayer was born with a degenerative eye disease called retinoschisis and started his young life with thick glasses and some limited vision. Shortly after totally losing his vision, he also lost his mother in a tragic car accident. His father, an ex-Marine, was determined to keep his family strong in spite of the tragedies they had to endure. He took his three teenage sons on mountain climbing trips all over the world, including Nepal, South America and India. ] With his dad and brothers encouraging him, Weihenmayer persevered in spite of the difficulty. He has emerged today as a world-class athlete. He not only climbs mountains, he is a long-distance biker, acrobatic skydiver, marathon runner, skier, ice climber and rock climber. ] Weihenmayer graduated from Boston College in 1991 and earned his master’s degree in education from Lesley College in 1993. He taught middle school for six years. He also served as wrestling coach. ] On May 25, 2001, Weihenmayer reached the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, becoming the only blind man in history to accomplish such a feat. He didn’t stop there though! When he stood on top of Carstenz Pyramid, the tallest peak of Australia/Oceania, on August 20, 2008, he completed his quest to climb the “Seven Summits,” the highest mountains on each of the seven continents of the world. Fewer than 100 mountaineers are able to claim this accomplishment. ] Thanks to his perseverance and persistence, Weihenmayer has not let his blindness keep him from accomplishing goals or leading an exciting and exhilarating life.

] Through the years, Weihenmayer has accomplished much. He has been honored with numerous awards, including: induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Helen Keller Lifetime Achievement Award, Nike’s Casey Martin Award, an ESPY award, the Freedom Foundation’s Free Spirit Award and more. He also carried the Olympic Torch for the summer and winter games. ] Today, Weihenmayer is a motivational speaker with a very busy schedule. When he is not on an outdoor adventure, he is encouraging others to find adventure and the courage to push their own limits. He is a follower when he needs to be but definitely a inspirational leader. “Leadership is contagious,” he said. “We pass it from body to body, from life to life, and we give all the people around us the courage to do great things.”] Weihenmayer’s first book, “Touch the Top of the World” has been published in six languages in 10 countries. It was made into a feature film in 2006. He co-authored a second book with Paul Stoltz, titled “The Adversity Advantage.” A film about Weihenmayer and a group of six blind Tibetan teenagers he lead up a 23,000-foot (7010 m) peak near Mount Everest was made into a movie in 2007, titled “Blindsight.”] As a motivational speaker, Weihenmayer has spoken to audiences all around the world. He says we all must realize the importance of teamwork, pursuing dreams and having the courage to reach for goals even when they seem impossible. He stresses that, “One does not have to have perfect eyesight to have extraordinary vision.”

OVERCOMING THE ODDS: ERIK WEIHENMAYERBorn in Hong Kong on September 23, 1968, Erik weihenmayer is an amazing athlete who has not only touched many people’s lives, he has touched the tops of the “Seven Summits.” This feat is ambitious for anyone but even more so for Erik, who lost his vision at age 13.

Composting tipsQUESTIoN: I really enjoy your column, it’s informative and helpful. We have many trees on our property, and leaves are a constant cleaning chore. We place the leaves in a barrel and let them decompose. When they’ve broken down, we use that compost in our flower beds and special gardens, like our volcano mountain waterfall garden. In the decomposing barrel, we add a little lime to sweeten the soil.

The best way to maintain home value is to keep the home looking appealing. — Mr. & Mrs. Harry & Janice K., St. Cloud, Fla.ANSwER: Good advice. Creating a compost heap is a very budget-friendly way to keep garden plants flourishing. If you have a well-treed property and aren’t taking advantage of all the free leaves, I highly recommend doing so. There are a number of composting methods, from creating a simple heap in a corner of the yard to purchasing a rotating composting system (usually a heavy-duty barrel on a stand that allows you to rotate the barrel easily to turn the compost). It’s up to you how you want to compost.Leaves can be a very rich source of minerals that when broken down do a great job of building up the soil for decorative plants as well as vegetable gardens. Adding lime to compost is a topic of some debate. Lime typically slows down decomposition, and it reduces the acidity of the compost. So it’s a good idea to know why and when lime needs to be added. If, for example, your compost is largely made up of oak leaves, pine needles or fruit pulp, adding a small amount of lime (about 1 cup for every 25 cubic feet of compost) can balance out the pH of the compost by lowering the acidity. To speed decomposition and ensure even breakdown, turn your compost every three weeks. Shredding the leaves before adding them to the pile will also help the compost develop faster. This is where a mulching attachment on the lawnmower comes in handy. If it’s too much trouble, however, just chuck the leaves onto the pile and remember to turn regularly.HoME TIP: Leaf pile not composting? Add some manure (one part for every five parts of leaves), bone meal or other nitrogen-rich supplement to kick-start decomposition.

JUST PLAY BALL!No matter what side you fell on — owners or players — every fan of American football agreed on one thing: Just get your act together and get back on the playing field. A lot of attention was paid in the media to the so-called little guy — you know, the pipe fitter who scrimped and saved for his season tickets. Was he concerned about paying players millions of dollars to play a game? Or was he union all the way? After all, wasn’t he in a union, too?“Just play ball” was the answer. But in conversations with friends, we all came to another conclusion, namely that we had no clue what the NFL lockout was about in the first place. “Um…player contracts…and, um…the owners’ money,” was the usual insightful answer offered from the peanut gallery.According to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, here’s what was at stake: 1. No draft. “Why should there even be a draft?” said player agent Brian Ayrault. “Players should be able to choose who they work for. Markets should determine the value of all contracts.”

2. No minimum team payroll. Some teams could have $200 million payrolls while others spend $50 million or less.3. No minimum player salary. 4. No standard guarantee to compensate players who suffer season- or career-ending injuries. Players would instead negotiate whatever compensation they could.5. No leaguewide agreements on benefits. 6. No limits on free agency. Players and agents would team up to direct top players to a handful of elite teams. Other teams, perpetually out of the running for the playoffs, would serve essentially as farm teams for the elites.7. No leaguewide rule limiting the length of training camp or required off-season workout obligations. Each club would have its own policies.8. No leaguewide testing program for drugs of abuse or performance-enhancing substances. Each club could have its own program — or not.In the end, the owners pretty much got their way, with the exception of a rookie wage scale and denial of an 18-game regular season. But most importantly — and as anti-capitalist as it may be — the $9 billion of annual revenue will continue to be put into one pot for the next 10 years. That deal will likely ensure the parity that NFL fans in small- and large-market teams like, the parity that turned the NFL into America’s favorite sport. Players like Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth agreed, too. “We were trying to make the game better for those guys that played it in the past, in the present and in the future,” Whitworth said. “We got this thing done. Now let’s play some ball.”

towle FlatwareQ: I have a set of flatware in the Towle Craftsman pattern, service for 12. Can you help me determine how much this set is worth? — Marcia, Southbury, Conn.A: Towle Silversmiths of Newburyport, Mass., began in 1857 as Towle & Jones, but the company’s heritage goes back to the 17th century. In 1679, William Moulton II left Hampton, N.H., and settled at Newbury, later Newburyport, where he became a trader and, perhaps, did some work in silver. That was the beginning.I found your pattern referenced in Warman’s “Sterling Silver Flatware: Value & Identification Guide” by Mark F. Moran (Krause, $24.99). Your pattern was introduced in 1932 and was extremely popular because of its modern, clean design. Some of the values listed in Moran’s price guide for this pattern are salad fork, $34; iced-tea spoon, $40; tablespoon, $65; and fork, $27.

* * *Q: I have a collection of hardcover books, with original covers and in excellent shape. I hope to give

them to my daughter and would like to find out current values. I have attached a list. — Sheila, Palm Coast, Fla.A: My favorite way to determine the value of a certain book is to go to the excellent Website www.abe.com. Type in the title of the book, its author and a list will appear of the various dealers throughout the country who are offering that particular book for sale and the price they are asking. There also are several excellent price guides, including “Official Price Guide to Books” by Marie Tedford and Pat Goudey, and “The Antique Trader Book Collectors Price Guide” by Richard Russell.

* * *Q: I have more than 200 8-track tapes; most have never been played. Do you know anyone who collects them? — Sue, Alton, Ill.A: I hate to begin my answer on a sour note, but 8-track tapes are something of an oddity and difficult to sell. Occasionally some pop up at garage sales or flea markets, generally priced for about a dollar each. The main drawback is that they require an 8-track player, which can be difficult to find, and the music is interrupted when the tracks switch during the recorded performance.

z It was way back in the 17th century when noted Scottish scholar Patrick Young made the following sage observation: “The trouble with weather forecasting is that it’s right too often for us to ignore it and wrong too often for us to rely on it.”z If you’ve watched many old Westerns, you’ve doubtless seen Native Americans scalping their enemies. You probably don’t realize, though, that the brutal practice didn’t originate with the Indians. When the Dutch and English settlers were trying to clear out the natives, they were paid a bounty for each scalp they brought back. The Native Americans adopted the practice only after the Europeans’ arrival on the continent.z The country’s first pizzeria opened in 1895 in, unsurprisingly, New York City.z Those who study such things say that 70 percent of Americans have visited either Disneyland, in California, or Disney World, in Florida.

z If you want to have an especially memorable — and chilly — vacation, consider heading to Finnish Lapland. There, more than 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle, you can stay at the Kakslauttanen Hotel. The quarters aren’t luxurious, but the sights are amazing. All the accommodations are geodesic glass igloos, offering amazing views of the aurora borealis.z Are you a snollygoster? If so, you’re shrewd, which isn’t a bad thing, but you’re also rather lacking in principles.z When Andrew Jackson was running for president in 1828, his opponents called him a stubborn jackass. Jackson was proud that he was known for obstinately sticking to his guns, so he started using the image of a donkey on his campaign materials. The Democrats have been using that symbol ever since.

Thought of the Week“Everyone, in some small sacred

sanctuary of the self, is nuts.” — Leo Rosten

Jesus and divorceBy Pastor Len Stubbs

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self (ways of the flesh), which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self,

created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”— Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

“Then He said to them all: ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23

Divorce is a raw nerve and if anything is clear, there are no winners when a marriage ends in divorce. The only winner is Satan who revels in seeing flesh win out over the Spirit.

I have been reading an outstanding book by Major W. Ian Thomas, The Indwelling Life of Christ. He says this of the actions of the flesh, “This hardened heart is the essence of the ‘old man’ within us, our flesh.” “The Lord Jesus Christ wants so very much to replace, by His presence within you, all your inherent potential for evil under the influence of the flesh.” [p. 46] Divorce is an action of the flesh. We cannot look to God to support wrong motive since He made it clear that He hates divorce. [Malachi 2:16]

I know many of you reading this right now are stewing over the “legitimate” reasons for your divorce or the divorce of someone you know. “If you only knew…” Well, I do understand that

marriage can get out of hand when people operate in the flesh but that is the point.

In the Spirit there is renewal; in the flesh, there is destruction. Putting off the old ways of the flesh and putting on “the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness” [Eph. 4:24] is an act of your will. When you begin that action and when you cry out to Him with true desire to restore that which was broken, God’s Spirit awakens your spirit and gives you the power to begin to restore that which was broken.

Our enemy, Satan, loves it when we chalk up another broken marriage. Stand firm and refuse him any place in your life. I John 4:4 says, “…because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

Divorce is not the unforgivable sin but its effects linger painfully for a lifetime. Choose life.

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

Assume you’re declarer at four spades and West cashes the K-A of hearts, then shifts to a low trump. You’re sure to lose one club trick, come what may, but you want to avoid losing two. Situations like this occur frequently, and the problem is how to resolve them. The one thing you should not do is stake the outcome solely on East’s holding the king of clubs. While it’s tempting to finesse the queen, that’s something you should do only as a last resort. You should first try to find out where the king of clubs is located. With this goal in mind, you win West’s trump return in your hand and lead the queen of diamonds. When West follows low, you go up with the ace, making a mental note that East has the king since West presumably would have covered the queen with the king if he had it.Next you lead a diamond from dummy and ruff it. If East produces the king, which is likely, you have a much better picture of the missing high cards than you had at the start. You can now feel certain that West has the king of clubs, since he could hardly have opened the bidding as dealer without that card.Your only hope now is that West was dealt either the singleton or doubleton king of clubs. If he has three clubs to the king, you can pretty much kiss the contract goodbye. Accordingly, you lead a trump to dummy, ruff a diamond, cash the ace of clubs and play a low club.As it happens, West has to win with the king, and you wind up making the contract.
