SeniorNews LineWhen the AARP jumps into a situation and sues, you know it’s serious. The AARP recently filed suit against the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) over some sneaky tactics involving reverse mortgages. Here’s how a reverse mortgage works: If you have equity in your home, you can enter into a reverse mortgage that will pay you money for the rest of your life, or until you sell the house. Money comes in every month, or you have a line of credit to draw on. If a borrower dies or sells, the loan is paid off when the home is sold, but never more than the home is worth. So how then did some seniors get eviction notices when the homes were foreclosed out from under them? Because those particular seniors weren’t on the mortgage documents. Perhaps the senior who took out the reverse mortgage was the only one of the two who was over age 62, and they would receive more money if only the elder senior signed up. Perhaps the two of them weren’t married yet.No matter how it happened, HUD retroactively changed

the rules and demanded that the loans be paid off in full when the original signers died, no matter the value of the homes. When the remaining seniors couldn’t raise the money and couldn’t sell for the amount demanded, foreclosure followed. At the same time that they demanded full repayment of the loan from surviving spouse and heirs, HUD was allowing third-party purchasers to buy those homes at below appraised market value. If you’re determined to do a reverse mortgage, get expert advice. You’ll be required to attend counseling, but don’t stop there. Seek other advisers. And if you’re a couple, beware having only one of you sign.

If you have PTSD symptoms, go here: www.ptsd.va.gov. It’s the Department of Veterans Affairs website on PTSD. Click on Veterans and the General Public. There’s lots of information there, including an overview, common reactions, the types of trauma, assessment and treatment, family and friends, and returning from war. Don’t miss the section on self-help and coping. Follow the link to What Can I Do if I Think I Have PTSD?Even if you took a PTSD screening test and passed it when you came home, maybe things have changed. Here is one big reason to get help: Symptoms can get worse, as chronic stress can set off physical illnesses. Here’s another: It might not be PTSD. You’re not going to know unless you are evaluated. Don’t try to self-diagnose.The list of treatments for PTSD is getting longer as time goes by. If you weren’t successfully treated before, try again. Give treatment a chance. If you’re in crisis, call this number: 1-800-273-8255. It’s a hotline staffed by people who can help. Veterans: press 1.

PTSD — The STigma of inviSible WounDS

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can manifest in any number of ways — anger, sleepless nights, overt behavioral acting out, upset stomach, exaggerated startle response, flashbacks, drug and alcohol use, withdrawal from people and activities, and dozens more.PTSD is real…and it’s invisible, unlike a physical injury that can be seen. Therein lies a problem that far too many veterans have faced: not having their reactions and their concerns taken seriously. Veterans are told to “get over it” by well-meaning people who don’t understand.Because of negative reactions, too many veterans aren’t seeking help. They’re worried about seeming weak, or are concerned about what others think. Does this describe you?

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It isn’t always easy for the rambunctious Aries to give a second thought to their often spur-of-the-moment choices. But aspects favor rechecking a decision before declaring it final.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Information emerges for the business-driven Bovine who feels ready to restart a stalled project. Be prepared to make adjustments as needed at any time during the process.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Part of you wants to complete plans for an upcoming event, while your other self wants to see how things develop first. Compromise by moving ahead with your plans while being open to change.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An unexpected change in a relationship could open up a problem or could lead to a much-needed and too-long-delayed reassessment of a number of matters. The choice is yours to make.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Time for the Lion to total the plusses and minuses resulting from recent personal and/or professional decisions. See what worked, what didn’t and why, and base your next big move on the results.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The clever Virgo can make persuasion work by presenting a case built on hard facts. Sentiment might touch the heart, but it’s good, solid information that invariably wins the day.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually can win over the most stubborn skeptics on your own. But this time you can benefit from supporters who have been there, done that and are willing to speak up on your behalf.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You win admiration for your determination to do the right thing. Don’t be distracted from that course, despite the offer of tempting alternatives that might suddenly turn up.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While you still need to maintain control of a dominant situation, a new development emerges, making the task easier and the outcome potentially more rewarding.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) New factors might have a positive effect on a still-pending matter, but only if the information proves to be credible. Trusted colleagues might be able to offer needed advice.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The week favors moderation, especially if a health problem is involved. Resist the impulse to do more than might be good for you at this time. You can catch up later.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You could feel more than a mite upset by someone or some people who might be creating problems for you. Find out why they won’t change their ways. Their reasons might surprise you. YOU BORN THIS WEEK: You know how to inspire others to do their best by setting a persuasive example of your own.

APRIL EVENTS (continued):competitor at AT&T labs using a 30-ounce (850-g) brick-like phone. Compare this with today’s phone at about 3 ounces (85 g). The process of bringing portable cell phones to the consumer market took 10 years, and Motorola introduced their 16-ounce (453-g) DynaTAC phone in 1983, carrying a price tag of $3,500. F April has been an eventful month in the world of baseball. In April of 1912, Detroit’s Tiger Stadium and Boston’s Fenway Park both opened on the same day. Eleven years later, Yankee Stadium had its opening day in April. New York Mets’ Shea Stadium was inaugurated in April of 1964. It was an especially memorable occasion when the world’s first domed sports stadium opened in April of 1965. Houston’s Astrodome was built at a cost of $37 million and included a sophisticated air conditioning system to deal with Texas’ July and August average temperatures of 97 degrees. Opening night entertainment at the Astrodome included performances by Judy Garland and The Supremes. The Astros were up against the New York Yankees in an exhibition game, and Mickey Mantle hit the first home run in the Astrodome off Houston pitcher Turk Farrell. F The Titanic departed from the port at Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912, bound for New York City. The ship set sail with 2,227 passengers on board and lifeboats for only 1,178 of those people. In the wee hours of the morning on April 15, two and a half hours after striking an iceberg in the

Two days later, an oxygen tank aboard the craft exploded, placing the crew in grave danger. They returned safely on April 17. Apollo 16 made an April 1972 flight to the moon, under the command of John Young. The first launch of the space shuttle Columbia also occurred in April, in 1981, and in 1990, the shuttle Discovery headed into space carrying the $1.5 billion Hubble Telescope.F Earth Day was first observed in April of 1970, with 20 million participants. Three-quarters of Americans have signed up for the Do Not Call registry, hoping not to be bothered by telemarketers, yet the calls keep coming. Unfortunately, not all calls are covered: If you’ve done business with a company, they can call you for 18 months unless you ask them to stop. It’s the same with political groups and charities, unless they use a telemarketing service, and phone survey companies. Here are some steps to take:The magic words if a telemarketer calls: “Please take my number off your list. Don’t call again.” Then hang up. They have 31 days to get you off their list.If you haven’t signed up for the DNC registry, go online to www.donotcall.gov. Click Register Now. You can put in up to three phone numbers at a time and need to give your email address. You’ll later get a verification email. But sure to click the link in that email within 72 hours to verify that you want your phone covered.Don’t forget your cellphone. While there currently isn’t a cellphone book, if your number does get out, telemarketers are allowed to call you as long as they don’t use a “robot” to make the calls. If you’ve signed up and you continue to get calls, verify that your phone numbers are on the DNC list. Go to the same website and click Verify a Registration. Follow the steps, including replying to the confirmation email. If you want to register or verify by phone, call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want covered. The Federal Trade Commission goes after companies that violate the DNC registry, but it can pursue only the ones it knows about. After 31 days of your number being in the registry, telemarketers cannot call you. If they do, complain to the FTC at the same number or on the website. Have all your information handy, such as time and date you were called, plus the name of the company if you have it.In the beginning, a DNC signup was only good for a few years. Since 2008, however, your signed-up phone number is permanently protected. If you live in a fast-growing region and your area code changes, you don’t need to sign up again. It’s done automatically.

North Atlantic, the Titanic sank, taking 1,517 people to their deaths. F You’ve probably never heard of Harriet Quimby, but she’s quite famous in her own right. Quimby was the first woman to earn a pilot’s license in the United States and less than a year later, became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. In April of 1912, she took off from Dover, England, and landed on a French beach 59 minutes later. Unfortunately, her amazing feat didn’t get much coverage in the newspapers, as the tragic sinking of the Titanic had taken place the day before.F April has been a big month for space adventures. In April of 1961, Soviet Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space aboard Vostok I,

Costly Shots Leave Cat Owner WincingBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, “Trina,” is an indoor cat — her paws never touch the outside ground. So why does she need so many different shots each year? The feline leukemia I can understand, but why should she get a rabies shot and so on when she’s never exposed to other creatures? The shots are so costly that we are refraining from taking her to get them. — Ethel H., via e-mailDEAR ETHEL: I can understand your reluctance to keep getting Trina shots every year when she is at low risk of catching the diseases the shots prevent. And the shot package is costly — even many “low cost” shot clinics run upward of $45 to $65 for a complete set of vaccinations. However, state health boards have decided they can’t take the chance of unvaccinated cats getting out among other cats (and pets do escape, even if Trina is a good cat) and catching and then spreading certain diseases. There’s also the admittedly low risk of another pet or

wild animal entering Trina’s living space and biting or otherwise exposing her to a disease. So, although I know it’s expensive and uncomfortable, for Trina’s sake, she needs to be vaccinated regularly. In recent years, a growing number of states have been reducing the frequency of rabies shots — from every year to once every three years. Certain other shots still are required annually, but it’s one less item on your bill. Please keep Trina’s vaccinations up to date. You’ll have the peace of mind of knowing she’s safe just in case.

* * *Note: To help out financially strapped pet owners,

I’ve been listing low-cost vaccination clinics by state on my website, www.pawscorner.com. Check to see if a clinic is taking place in your area. If you know of an upcoming clinic

that’s not listed, email me at [email protected], and I’ll add the date.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain urinary tract infections. Why do they recur? My doctor prescribes antibiotics, but shortly after I’ve completed taking them, I have another infection. What do you suggest as treatment? A pharmacist told me that I needed one or two days in the hospital to flush out my kidneys. — S.A.ANSWER: Urinary tract infections fall into one of two types. Upper tract infections indicate that the kidneys are involved. These are serious and less-common infections. Lower urinary tract infections are bladder infections, and they are very common. That’s the kind of infection I believe you have.Women are prone to develop bladder infections for a number of reasons. One, the tube (urethra) that empties their bladder is much shorter than in males, so bacteria can gain access to the bladder more easily. Secondly, the opening of the female urethra is in a place with a large population of bacteria. And thirdly, sexual relations massage bacteria into the female urethra and bladder.A bladder infection — cystitis — provokes frequent trips to the bathroom, an urgent need to quickly empty the bladder or suffer an accident, and pain, usually described as burning, during urination.Women with repeated bladder infections need to be evaluated to see if the infection is a relapse (an infection with the same bacterium) or a new infection (infection with a different bacterium). The approach to treatment hinges on that information.

If a woman has another infection with the same bacterium, the doctor can put her on the same antibiotic for a longer period of time and can continue to treat long after symptoms have gone. The continued treatment is with a reduced antibiotic dose.Another way to prevent a recurrence is to give the woman a prescription for an antibiotic that she takes after intercourse. Home remedies can be helpful. Drinking 8 ounces of cranberry juice daily benefits prevention of the most common cause of these infections. The kidney flush suggestion is not a good one.The booklet on urinary tract infections delves deeper into these common maladies. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue — No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a small lump on the back of my left wrist. It’s soft and doesn’t hurt even when I push on it. It’s been there for at least two months. I don’t remember injuring it. Lumps freak me out. My brother had bone cancer. When I see things sprouting on me, I think of cancer. Could it be? — F.L.ANSWER: It’s not likely to be bone cancer. A more likely bet is a ganglion. That’s a kind of cyst filled with thick, gelatinous material. It communicates with the wrist joint or with one of the wrist tendons. If it doesn’t hurt or interfere with wrist motion, you can ignore it. It if does, a doctor can remove it without much fuss. Many ganglion patients want their doctor to drain it. Drainage is possible, but the recurrence rate is very high.

Occasionally, the correct play is missed by declarer because there is a natural aversion to doing it. For this reason, declarer must make every effort to keep an open mind, regardless of how pat a particular situation may seem to be. Consider this case where South was in three notrump and West led a spade. Declarer played the jack from dummy and allowed East’s queen to hold. The next spade was likewise refused, and a third spade was taken by the ace. South now cashed the queen of diamonds, led a club to the ace and played the A-K of diamonds. But when the suit failed to divide 3-3, declarer was finished. The only tricks he could score were his seven top winners, so he wound up down two.Declarer erred by banking everything on an even split of the missing diamonds, about a 36 percent proposition. This approach made him nearly a 2-1 underdog.South could have nearly doubled his chances by making the seemingly unnatural play of overtaking the queen of diamonds with the king and cashing the ace. When West’s ten appears, the nine is conceded to the jack, assuring declarer of nine tricks. This line of play is far better than the one actually adopted by South. It not only makes the contract when the diamonds divide 3-3, but also whenever the suit breaks 4-2 and the player with the doubleton has either 10-x or J-x.Since the doubleton ten or jack will be dealt to one defender or the other 29 times in 100, declarer can thus elevate his chances of bringing in five diamond tricks to about 65 percent, making him almost a 2-1 favorite to finish with at least nine tricks.

APRIL EVENTS (continued):of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who came up with the idea after touring a disastrous oil spill in the Santa Barbara, California, area. In his words, “It had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country.” F The press dubbed it “The Wedding the Century” when actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in April of 1956. Thirty-six seamstresses worked on the 26-year-old Kelly’s wedding dress for six weeks in preparation for the nuptials. She had met the prince the previous April while doing a photo shoot in connection with the Cannes Film Festival. After eight months of correspondence, Rainier traveled to America, met the Kelly family, and three days later, he proposed. Her family was required to provide a dowry of $2 million to him before marriage plans were to proceed. Six hundred guests attended the wedding, and the royal couple departed that evening for a seven-week Mediterranean honeymoon cruise aboard the prince’s yacht. directions thanks to the efforts of Rand McNally. In April of 1924, the company published its first road atlas, although they had been publishing maps and geography textbooks for years. The company was founded by William Rand and Andrew McNally in 1868 and became the first major mapmaker to use a system of numbered highways. F April has had its share of tragedies. In 1995, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed by Timothy McVeigh. In 1999, Colorado’s Columbine High School shootings occurred. It was also the month of the assassinations of President Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. The devastating nuclear accident at the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl plant also took place in April. F Twenty-seven-year-old James Cash Penney headed out to Wyoming in 1902, and on April 13 of that year in the community of Kemmerer, he opened his first dry goods and clothing store called The Golden Rule. He chose the name because it was his philosophy to treat others the way he would like to be treated. In his free time, Penney worked as a lumberjack felling trees. Ten years

later, his chain of stores had grown to 34 stores, and he incorporated them all as the J.C. Penney Company. By 1924, he was generating an income upwards of $1.5 million a year. Today, the company operates over 1,100 stores with 150,000 employees and sales approaching $18 billion annually. And that little store in Kemmerer? Still there, operating on a daily basis.

What have you done for your hands lately…Natural Nail Care cleans up the cuticles, shapes the nails, exfoliates and moisturizes your hands. You’ll be pretty and polished. When at home, remember to treat your hands the same way you treat your face. Exfoliate and moisturize them regularly. Wear gloves when doing dishes or working in the garden. Don’t forget the sunscreen, especially if you are going to be outside for an extended period of time. I always recommend a natural mineral sunscreen such as Coola Sun Care, it’s my favorite. Here’s a beauty tip…Wash your makeup brushes on a regular basis with a gentle shampoo. Shake out the excess water and place on a hand towel to air dry overnight. Brushes that have been used for concealers and cream shadows should be cleaned with a brush cleaner after each usage and washed frequently. Lightly spray the brush and tissue off. If you have acne-prone or oily skin, wash your tools as often as possible to prevent the spread of bacteria.Did you know…that while we are sleeping, our bodies repair daily damage to the skin caused by stress, pollution, sun and other environmental irritants. Cleanse nightly to remove makeup and pollutants. Follow with a luxurious night cream or serum, eye cream and hand cream each evening to replenish, restore and re-hydrate your skin.

Fans Are Straw That Stirs NASCARDeep down, some fans must know they’re stark, raving mad. It’s in a good way. In fact,

enthusiastic, outrageous, shirts-and-caps-collecting fans make the NASCAR world go around. The drink they’re stirring is a margarita. Declaring the Reggie Jackson cliché obsolete on account of the statute of limitations, the fans, collectively, are the straw. When that green flag waves, and Darrell Waltrip commences to hollerin’, they are crazy as Charlie Sheen. Sheen wants some of what those folks are on.God love ‘em.But it’s unreasonable to believe that either, a) NASCAR, or b) Rick Hendrick doesn’t want Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win. It’s no more reasonable to believe that NASCAR wants Jimmie Johnson to win the Sprint Cup championship every year.Even in Daytona Beach, Fla., most things are on the level. Many folks seem to think that the media has a bias. This is because it’s difficult for a journalist to think in the head of a fan, who thinks anyone whose opinion is different from his is biased. He or she is

biased against him or her, and it’s true, simply because he or she isn’t, in fact, him or her.He is on first. She is on second. Him is at short. Her is at third. Who’s on the hill? I Don’t Know. Likes to throw curves. What has recently become apparent is that many fans think it’s perfectly appropriate for members of the media to jump up and down, stomp and cheer

wildly after a driver wins a race, which begs the question: Do they want the media to be biased, or don’t they?Alas, this profession has its own set of rules, same as a plumber, a pediatrician and a politician. OK, maybe politician is a poor example.Being stark, raving crazy, it’s natural for fans to think the media ought to be stark, raving crazy, too. Which is true, but in a different way.The best conclusion was

probably John Prine’s. “It’s a big, old goofy world.”

Y At the age of two, Ohio-born Scott Hamilton contracted an illness that caused him to inexplicably stop growing. Extensive tests followed, as did wrong diagnoses. One physician diagnosed cystic fibrosis and gave the toddler six months to live. A trip to the Boston Children’s Hospital resulted in a special diet and exercise plan, and miraculously, the disorder corrected itself. However, the end result was that Hamilton’s stature remained small at just over 5 feet, 2 inches (1.6 m) and 108 pounds (49 kg). Y After watching his older sister at an ice rink, Hamilton became interested in skating. At age 13, he began training for national competition with former French Olympic champion Pierre Brunet, winner of three Olympic medals. In order to meet the expenses of Hamilton’s training, his mother, a second grade teacher, returned to school to become a college professor. Another obstacle hit the Hamilton family’s path when Mrs. Hamilton was diagnosed with breast cancer. When she was forced to quit work, the money for Hamilton’s training stopped, and as a high school senior, he faced having to quit skating. When anonymous benefactors stepped forward with the offer to finance his training, he was able to continue.Y Cancer claimed the life of Hamilton’s mother in 1977 when he was 19, and he vowed to make her proud. When he earned third place in the 1980 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, he earned a spot on the Olympic team. At the Olympics in Lake Placid that year, he proudly carried

the American flag in the opening ceremony and went on to finish in fifth place. The next year he took the gold in the World Figure Skating Championships, a feat he repeated for the following three years. In 1984, he was the gold medalist at the Olympics in Sarajevo, after which he turned professional.

Y After a stint with Ice Capades, Hamilton co-founded Stars on Ice and performed regularly until 2001. He has also served as a skating commentator for various networks. In a national sports survey, Hamilton ranked in the top eight most popular American athletes, ahead of Michael Jordan, Troy Aikman, Wayne Gretzky and Joe Montana. Y In 1997, another obstacle appeared in Hamilton’s path when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. After treatment he returned to skating, only to have a benign brain tumor discovered in 2004. When the tumor returned in June of 2010, Hamilton underwent surgery, during which an artery was nicked. This caused a brain aneurysm, which was removed successfully, but it resulted in the loss of two-thirds of the vision in his right eye.

Y Yet Hamilton refuses to give up. In November, five months after brain surgery, he raised $1.1 million for his organization CARES (Cancer Alliance for Research, Education and Survivorship), devoted to finding a cure for cancer. He is frequently sought as a motivational speaker, and his 2009 book “The Great Eight” shares his secrets to happiness and how he has met life’s challenges head-on.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS: SCOTT HAMILTONIt’s tough enough to become an Olympic champion under the best of circumstances,

but figure skater Scott Hamilton has had more than his fair share of hardships. Let’s see what makes Hamilton a true victor.

Hamilton performs during a Stars on

Ice show, April 2002.

QUESTION: I’m not sure how, but when checking the outdoor spigots this spring I noticed that the steel pipe behind one of them had swelled and split. I had turned off water to this pipe last fall so I’m not sure how this happened, and I don’t see any water damage in the basement. Why did this occur? What’s the cheapest fix so I can use this spigot again soon? — Frank T., Dover, N.H.ANSWER: I’m not sure exactly why it happened either. Perhaps if the tap wasn’t fully drained after you turned off water at the nearest shutoff valve, perhaps some water pooled just behind the spigot and, when a hard freeze occurred, the water froze, expanded and split the pipe. I’m also not sure there’s a truly cheap fix for this. Duct tape will keep water from spraying all over the place but won’t stop a leak and will quickly break down. You need to keep the water turned off and the pipe drained, and contact a plumber as soon as possible. The pipe will need to be replaced, perhaps all the way back to the shutoff valve.Get a written estimate — two or more if you’re not sure how much the job should cost — and decide from there when and how you’ll have the pipe replaced. Because it sounds like you’ve got galvanized steel pipe, the plumber will recommend a different material (galvanized steel isn’t used anymore — period) and he or she may recommend replacing all the steel pipes, though probably not all at once.Meantime, it would be a good idea to check all of the other pipes leading outside for similar damage. Hopefully, that’s the only one you have to deal with right now. Also, since the Northeast is still at risk in April of more hard freezes occurring, keep the outside spigots turned off and drained for a few more weeks. Homes with newer plumbing don’t have to worry as much about outside pipes freezing and splitting in early spring, but older pipe systems need to be more closely watched.HOME TIP: When turning on outdoor faucets, hook up garden hoses and sprinklers and run water through them to make sure they work properly and haven’t sprung leaks.

THIS IS AHAMMERTHIS IS AHAMMER

THERE ARE NO MORE “MID-MAJORS”

It was a condescending term to start with, “mid-major,” as if the colleges that happened to be born outside of the vaunted Bowl Championship Series conferences were “sub-human” or something. That’s not to say the well-endowed teams that comprise the ACC, SEC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac-10, and their alumni, don’t look down their noses at their smaller conference brethren — they certainly do. The six “major” conferences consider it their birthright to take the lion’s share of the revenue that’s up for grabs each year. They get the huge TV deals, the lucrative shoe contracts and whatnot. They have the ways and means to fly not only their teams across the country, but their school bands, too. Yes, they gobble up the majority of those considered to be the best national recruits. They are virtually guaranteed an invite — usually as a top seed — in the NCAA tournament if they merely manage to hash out a semi-convincing winning record. Take — like many opponents did this year — the Big East,

for example. With 16 basketball members (Big East football is a little more complicated), it set the all-time record for the most teams sent to the NCAA’s by a single conference with 11 this past season. The result as far as your bracket was concerned? UConn — the No. 9-ranked Big East team — was the conference’s sole Final Four representative. But what’s that got to do with the price of beer in Richmond, home of the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams? They never thought in a million years they’d be in the NCAA tournament, let alone compete for the championship. The VCU team didn’t even bother watching the NCAA selection show, and only TWO people out of the 5.9 million who filled out brackets on ESPN.com picked the correct Final Four of Butler, VCU, Kentucky and UConn. And really, the instant VCU stepped onto the court and proceeded to usher the Kansas Jayhawks out of town, the term “mid-major” should have gone with them. There’s nothing “mid-major” about shooting the smart three and grabbing more rebounds than your opponent; nothing “mid-major” about recruiting programs, student bodies and alumni like those who participate in the programs at Gonzaga, Butler and George Mason. In fact, it was No. 11 George Mason, under the guidance of Coach Jim Larranaga, that drew first blood. Larranaga guided Mason to the Final Four in 2006, and he’s a staunch booster of the smaller programs.“There’s going to be a mid-major win a national championship,” Larranaga said in an interview with The New York Times. “There’s no doubt in my mind.”All things considered lately, that would seem to be a safe bet.

elavskyQ: I’ve had a crush on Justin Bruening since he was on “All My Children” in the mid-2000s. What is he up to lately? — Michelle T., via e-mailA: The former “AMC” and “Knight Rider” star was recently cast in the new “Wonder Woman” reboot, where he’ll serve as a love interest for the superhero herself, played by Adrianne Palicki. Justin, 31, joins one of my crushes, Cary Elwes — who I called dibs on back when he starred as Wesley in “The Princess Bride” — on the new series, which is scheduled to join NBC’s lineup this fall.

Q: I was wondering about actor Jameson Parker, who starred with Gerald McRaney on “Simon and Simon.” What has he been doing lately? I saw a recent picture of him, and he is still blond and gorgeous at 63. — Catherine H., Clinton Township, Mich.A: Jameson, who played AJ Simon in the hit ‘80s series, has been lying pretty low, acting-wise, for a few years. After “Simon and Simon,” Jameson starred in TV movies and guest-starred on many series, including McRaney’s hit sitcom “Major Dad.” He also has written a few books, including an autobiography called “An Accidental Cowboy” and another book titled “To Absent Friends,” which he describes as “a book about dogs we miss.” Back in 1992, Jameson was shot twice during a dispute with his neighbor over dog waste. He was released from the hospital the next day and made a full recovery. The neighbor was charged with attempted murder and sentenced to nine years in prison.

Q: I’ve always liked actress Tea Leoni. Can I see her in anything new soon? — Todd B., via e-mail A: Tea is joining hubby David Duchovny’s rival network, HBO, for a new comedy called “Spring/Summer.” As I’m sure you know, David stars in the hit Showtime series

“Californication,” which recently finished airing its fourth season. But back to Tea…her new show, which is scheduled to begin shooting in June, marks her return to network television. Her most recent TV appearance was as a guest star on David’s show, “The X-Files,” back in 2000.

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

I am often asked questions about how to live in the “unique” circumstances we find ourselves. Recently, I was asked by a man, “How was it that I had lots of prayer needs while I was out of work but now in my current job I find I have nothing to pray about?” My response was a question. “Since you have been in this job have all of your fellow employees come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior?” You can guess the answer.

Our circumstances ought not to be simply about our own immediate needs. Paul writes, “we look not to things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.” (II Cor. 4:18) Our circumstances are not the enemy though the enemy may use them. If our prayers for our needs are answered that’s good. However, we need to see what is happening beyond us since God places us where we can be used for His Kingdom as well as for our immediate needs to be met.

Where does this confusion come from today? One writer, Ray Stedman, says “Much of the explanation

for this confusion which exists so widely in the church today is that Christians have been looking at the things that are seen instead of at the things that are unseen.” If we only ask God to deal with those things that we see, we are missing the larger part of the battle that we are in (with Him) for the hearts and souls of men.

Our contentment is not based on our ability but His guarantee from faith. “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.” (I Thess. 5:24) We are to trust Him in and through every circumstance in which we find ourselves. Nothing has come to us out of the blue. It has all come by Him and He has allowed it to come. If He allows it to come, He will provide the answer and the way out.

I repeat…“we look not to things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.” (II Cor. 4:18)

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

TeaPoTQ: In 1939, my parents visited London on their honeymoon. As a souvenir, they purchased a wonderful Royal Doulton teapot, the Sairey Gamp design. Do you have any idea of its value? — Steve, Peterborough, N.H.A: According to the Antique Trader Teapots Price Guide, edited by Kyle Husfloen, your teapot was designed by Charles Noke and is worth about $2,000.

* * *Q: My mother bought two porcelain wall mounts in Dallas in 1937. I have been unable to find out anything about them. I even looked through the Kovel guides to see if I could locate the mark, but did not have any luck. — Robert, Albuquerque, N.M.A: When you are unable to find information about a collectible and you truly want to know more about it, including its value, it’s time to consult an expert. Albuquerque has several excellent appraisers who might be able to help you. You should expect to pay a fee for their services. As I have written numerous times, a free appraisal is worth what you paid for it. Two established appraisers are Peter Eller, 505-268-7437; and Suzanne Staley, www.

suzannestaley.com, and 888-758-1118. Others seeking appraisers in their area can use www.appraisers.org and www.appraisersassoc.org.

* * *Q: I have a copy of “The Five Women I Love,” personally autographed to me by Bob Hope during his Vietnam Christmas tour of 1966. Do you have any idea of what it might be worth? — Bob, via e-mailA: I found dozens of first-edition copies of the book you referenced at www.abe.com, all priced at less than $10 per copy. Bob Hope’s signature is fairly common and might add about $25 to the value of your book.

* * *Q: I have a large collection of paperbacks, mostly from the 1940s and early ‘50s. Can you recommend a good price guide? — Marvin, Stigler, Okla.A: Although there are several excellent guides, I especially like the Antique Trade Collectible Paperback Price Guide by Gary Lovisi (Krause, $19.99). It has thousands of up-to-date values with 1,100 full-color illustrations. It can be ordered at www.amazon.com or from the publisher, www.krause.com.

“Stitch ‘n Bitch Superstar Knitting”by Debbie Stoller

(Workman Publishing, $17.95)“Knit Your Own Royal Wedding”

by Fiona Goble(Andrews McMeel, $17.99)

Reviewed by Ealish WaddellDuring the past decade or so, there’s been something of a revival of the traditional art of knitting, particularly among young women. This new wave of youthful seamstresses delights in tweaking the classics while displaying a devotion to craft and skill that would make their grandmothers proud. In “Stitch ‘n Bitch Superstar Knitting,” author Debbie Stoller takes in hand those new knitters who are ready to graduate from the basics but feel intimidated by more complex techniques. Using her own personal experience and tales of what did and didn’t work for her, she explains sophisticated stitches and styles as simply as possible, using literal and sometimes even metaphorical illustrations of the tricky geometry and fingerwork involved in a way that is both enlightening and entertaining. The second half of the book presents dozens of original patterns that incorporate these new techniques into modern, youthful clothing, bags and accessories. From delicate, feminine lace to punked-out skulls and crossbones, there’s bound to be a project here for just about anyone. But if even these designs seem too mainstream, check out “Knit Your Own Royal Wedding.” Just in time for the April 29 nuptials of Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton, this slim book will give you all the know-how you need to whip up your own fuzzy royal wedding party. Don’t forget a little pack of corgis to carry the bride’s train! The details in these patterns are exquisite and hilarious, from the queen’s teeny handbag to the groom’s dad’s distinctive nose, and inventive photography adds even more flair to the clear, colorful illustrations. If new and different is what you’re after for your next knitting project, you can’t go wrong here.
