Here’s yet another reason to take all the medication that our doctors prescribe: It can save us from falls.A study was done by a group with a rather interesting name: MOBILIZE Boston, which stands for Balance, Independent Living, Intellect and Zest in the Elderly of Boston. The group exists to study fall risk factors in seniors. More than 600 participants with an average age of 78 were studied after they’d had falls. They were all asked four questions: Do they ever forget? Are they ever careless? Do they ever stop taking medicine when they feel better? Do they ever stop taking medicine if they feel worse?Forty-eight percent were what it called “low adherence,” which means they weren’t taking their prescriptions as instructed. Those seniors had more than one fall per year, a full 50 percent more than the “high adherence” group. Over the course of the study, 376 of the participants reported more than 1,000 falls. The researchers suggested that doctors quiz their senior patients about whether they take all medication as prescribed. While that might be a good idea, I have an idea,

too: We need to take responsibility for our health, and that includes taking medications when and as they’re prescribed. Granted, there are some medications with side effects. But a call to the doctor’s office often can result in getting a slightly different medicine. After all, falls are one of the quickest ways we can lose our independence. Here are some more steps you can take to limit the number of falls:• Check your environment. Are there wrinkled

throw rugs on your floors? Is the stair-rail sturdy?

• Are your shoes comfortable, with a non-slip sole?

• Do you need to update your eyeglass prescription?

• Do you need handrails installed? Help is available if you ask for it.

The Army is testing a fuel efficient and more environmentally friendly diesel hybrid, the HEMTT A3, which promises to cut fuel consumption by up to 20 percent — for an average savings of four to five miles per gallon — enough to save the Army a small fortune in fuel costs.

“Without discipline, the Army would just be a bunch of guys wearing the same color clothing.”

Laugh a bit with

Preparing for Boot CampLike any mother, I worried when my son joined the Army. But later on, when I asked him how

things were going, he put my mind at ease. “Let me put it this way, Mom,” he said. “Living

with you prepared me for boot camp.”

Thought of the Week“I’m sick of following my dreams.

I’m just going to ask them where they’re going and hook up with them later.”

— Mitch Hedberg

z It was American author, playwright, screenwriter and political activist Gore Vidal who made the following sage observation: “Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically, by definition, be disqualified from ever doing so.”z The next time you get a chance, you might want to check the pressure of your car’s tires; if they’re not inflated to the correct pressure, you’re contributing to the $9 million in fuel that is wasted due to improper tire pressure, according to the Department of Energy.z If you ever go to Rome, one of the sights that must be seen is the Trevi Fountain, the elaborate Baroque installment that was completed in 1762. According to legend, anyone who throws a coin in the fountain is ensured a return visit to Rome. This is, evidently, a popular tradition; every night approximately $3,500 is retrieved from the

fountain. The money is used to fund a supermarket for the city’s needy.z In this era of ubiquitous technology and instant communication through e-mail and text message, the average American still receives 1.5 personal letters each week. Of course, you have to weigh that against the 10.8 pieces of junk mail that arrive on a weekly basis.z Due to the rising prices of the materials used to mint coins, it now costs 2 cents to manufacture every penny and 9 cents to make a nickel.z In 2006, an Illinois police officer was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. This probably would not be noteworthy, except that it was the same police officer who received an award for making the most DUI arrests in his county.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m not afraid of dogs, but I worry about getting bitten sometimes. My older brother told me that only mean dogs will bite, but I’m not sure about that. How can I tell when a dog is about to bite? — Kerry in South DakotaDEAR KERRY: Unfortunately, it’s not true that only “mean” dogs bite. Any dog can bite, even a gentle one, if it is in pain, startled or protecting something like its puppies or a toy. So, your instinct is right on: Don’t be afraid of dogs, but use caution and respect when interacting with them. The U.S. Postal Service has some tips to follow to minimize the risk of being bitten:• Don’t run past a dog. The dog’s natural instinct is to chase and catch prey.• If a dog threatens you, don’t scream. Avoid eye contact. Try to remain motionless until the dog leaves, then back away slowly until

THE ARMY (continued):H On June 14, 1775, Congress approved the raising of 10 companies of riflemen to enlist in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia until the end of the Revolutionary War. These troops were known as the Continental Army.H Even before an open treaty was signed between Colonial Americans fighting for independence and France, the French had secretly helped the cause of the Americans. France sent America money and army supplies and, in addition, able Frenchmen had come across the Atlantic to join the American army. The most noted of these was the Marquis de Lafayette.H By the end of the French and Indian War, a new weapon had appeared on the frontier in Pennsylvania and to the south, one far better suited to guerrilla warfare than the musket. This weapon was later to become known as the Kentucky rifle. H Congress established the U.S. Military Academy along the Hudson River, at West Point, New York, in 1802.H In the early 1900s, General Samuel Young became the army’s first Chief of Staff and the first aeronautical division was set up within its signal corps.

H The “Star Spangled Banner” officially became the National Anthem in 1931.H It’s about time: Private First Class Clarence Wallaert was shot in the hip by a German sniper while fighting against the German Winter Line in Italy on Dec. 30, 1943. Wallaert bandaged his own wound and provided 12 hours of rifle support for his Army comrades advancing into the Liri Valley — the “gateway to Rome.” Nearly 66 years later, Wallaert, 86, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., for his meritorious actions during World War II.H June 6, 1944: D-Day. In the largest, exclusively American field command, 1.3 million men stormed the beaches at Normandy in the greatest amphibious

attack in history.H In late 1944, in the wake of the allied forces’ successful D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, it seemed as if the Second World War was all but over. But on December 16, with the onset of winter, the German army launched a counteroffensive intended to cut through the Allied forces in a manner that would turn the tide of the war in Hitler’s favor. This was The Battle of the Bulge, where the courage and fortitude of the American Soldier was tested against great adversity.H It’s a hit. The U.S. Army announced on December 12, 1957, that “The Army Goes Rolling Along” (“Caisson Song”) was to be verified as

Help for Homeowners wHo Are “UnderwAter”

The Home Affordable Refinance Program has been extended, which is good news for potentially millions of homeowners. Set to expire this summer, the program now will run until June 2011.HARP is aimed at homeowners of properties that are currently worth less than what is due on the note, known as being “underwater.”Because of the home-price declines of a still-failing housing market, more and more people are experiencing the loss of equity in their homes. While most underwater homeowners continue to make payments and are current, it’s been reported that when homeowners face losses of equity of more than 25 percent, defaults and foreclosures increase. Foreclosures are up to 4.6 percent of all homeowners now. Some merely walk away from the house when all hope of regaining equity is lost. Without solid loan-to-value numbers, a homeowner can’t refinance. Without good appraisal numbers — because neighborhood values have fallen — there is no refinance. Homeowners can’t sell their homes, either, if they’ll still owe more than they can get for the house. In many cases, the underwater homeowner is not at fault. Unemployment can cause whole neighborhoods to fall, as owners sell at low prices one step ahead of foreclosure, bringing down values. To qualify for the refinance program:• You must be current on your mortgage.• Only Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac loans can participate.• The lender must approve and agree to rewrite the balance of the loan and take at least 10 percent off the principal.• After the refinance, the mortgage amount cannot exceed 115 percent of the value of the home.• The new mortgage payments must be less than 31 percent of your income.• The property must be your primary home.• If you have a second mortgage, the first and second will be combined.• Your FICO credit score must be 500 or above. If you have an interest-only loan or an interest rate that will rise, a HARP refinance can help stabilize your payments by giving you a fixed rate. If you have a high interest-rate loan, a HARP refinance can help reduce your payments. For more information, check the government’s Making Home Affordable site at makinghomeaffordable.gov. Click on Eligibility, and scroll down to Home Affordable Refinance Program.

CONCORD, N.C. — Regardless of how the rest of the season is going, David Reutimann can count on Charlotte Motor

Speedway for respite.Reutimann’s only Sprint Cup victory to date occurred in the track’s 2009 Coca-Cola 600. A year after that stirring upset, Reutimann matched his best finish of the current season by finishing fifth in NASCAR’s longest race.At 40, Reutimann, from Zephyrhills, Fla., is only 112 races into his Cup career. He never made it to NASCAR’s premier series full-time until 2008, though he competed in 26 races in ‘07.“A guy coming right out of high school and going Cup racing doesn’t appreciate it, maybe, as much as a guy like me who’s done it a little differently,” he said. “Nothing wrong with that.“Trust me. I wish I would’ve been 18 years old, coming out of high school, and had an opportunity to do Cup racing. I would’ve loved to have done that. It just wasn’t in the cards for me at the time. If

you were 18 or 20 years old, or even mid-20s, you were too young. They wanted guys who were more seasoned because they didn’t tear up as many cars.”It was Jeff Gordon who changed all that. Gordon, of course, has won four championships and 82 races.

At age 40, David Reutimann got a late start on his Sprint Cup career, with his first full season in 2008. (John Clark/NASCAR

Reutimann: BetteR Late than neveRHe’s younger than Reutimann.“Gordon shows up, and all the rules changed,” said Reutimann. “Everybody wanted a young guy because he (Gordon) was producing on the race track. You’ve got a guy like Mark Martin. I’m not saying I’m a Mark Martin, but when you’re out there racing that guy and he’s kicking butt, it makes you feel really good. “It makes you feel like you maybe have a little bit of longevity. You never know. In the end, if you run well on the race track, they’ll probably keep you around no matter how old you get.”Is there still room for a late bloomer? Why, sure.“Forty is the new 30, anyway,” said Reutimann. “That’s what I’m going with.”

MAGIC MAZE ANSWERBURIED IN ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY

Three & Six

Answer

THE ARMY (continued):their official song.H It was something “special.” In 1952 Colonel Aaron Bank and Colonel Russell Volckmann, both former OSS members, convinced Army officials of the need for unconventional warriors. Bank established this new organization’s headquarters at Fort Bragg, recruiting former OSS officers, airborne and ranger troops, and seasoned war veterans. This new group was dubbed Special Forces, a designation derived from the OSS whose operational teams in the field were given the same name in 1944.H Did you know that Army soldiers no longer roll up their sleeves? In order to ensure a more uniform look, the brass decided that the sleeves would no longer be worn rolled up, even in the summer. First, this had a practical reason as it helped reduce sun and other skin injuries. Second, it was all part of the Army’s current initiative to instill a warrior attitude in the soldiers of always being prepared for combat. Most infantry units had never authorized the sleeves to be rolled up. Lastly, the design of the new ACU’s made rolling up the sleeve extremely impractical. H The largest army component is the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), which executes the land defense of the U.S., provides military support to civil authorities, and trains, sustains, mobilizes and protects strategic land forces worldwide.H The U.S. Army has over 400,000 enlisted soldiers and 76,000 officers.H With headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., the U.S. Army Reserve consists of about 250,000 soldiers. It fields a large portion of the support staff, especially in civil affairs, engineering, transportation and maintenance.H The Army National Guard fields approximately

370,000 troops (not including Alaska, Hawaii and Guam). It can provide eight combat divisions, one armored cavalry regiment and 21 combat brigades.H The secretary of the Army is the civilian head of the United States Army and reports to the secretary of defense for operational authority. He is named

by the president and approved by the Senate. H The Canadian Forces were heavily involved in World War II and the Korean War, but since then, from the 1950s on, Canadian soldiers have generally been used in peacekeeping missions, assisting the United Nations.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have read your column for many years, but I haven’t seen anything about stomach flu. Will you write about it? Someone in my family of seven gets it every year, even in the summer. Does the flu shot protect you from it? — H.H.ANSWER: At one time, I conducted a crusade to erase the term “stomach (or intestinal) flu” from the English language. I didn’t get very far, so I gave up on it. Real flu — influenza — is a respiratory illness, not an intestinal illness. The flu shot provides protection only against true flu, not “stomach” flu.Four viruses are the usual culprits of stomach flu, and, for adults, the one that leads the pack is norovirus. Vomiting, diarrhea, fever and often headache are the main symptoms. It comes on suddenly, about one or two days after the virus enters the body. The sickness lasts only one to three days. A slight increase in number of cases occurs in the winter, but it comes in all seasons.Norovirus infections usually spare infants. Older people have the worst symptoms, and they are the ones who can die from an infection, but death is rare. This is the illness that sweeps through cruise ships and can infect an entire nursing home. It’s

also common in military settings and sports teams. The virus is passed in contaminated food and water, and it can live for long times on inanimate objects — another possible source of transmission. No medicines kill the norovirus. Replacing fluid lost through diarrhea is the most important aspect of treatment. A homemade replacement solution is a mixture of half a teaspoon of salt, half a teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and four tablespoons of sugar in a quart (about one liter) of water. Commercial fluid replacements also are available, and drinks like Gatorade are suitable for infections that are not prostrating. Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) controls diarrhea.Immunity to norovirus is not long-lasting, so second infections occur. Many bacterial illnesses, like Salmonella, also lead to diarrhea, but that’s a subject for another day.

During Army basic training, the lieutenant looked over his troops and asked each of them where home was. After everyone had answered, he sneered and

said, “You are all wrong, the Army is now your home.” Back at the barracks, he read the evening duties, then

asked the first sergeant if he had anything to say. “You bet I do,” the sergeant replied. “Men, while you were gone today, I found beds improperly made, clothes not hanging correctly, shoes not

shined and footlockers a mess. Where do you think you are? Home?”
