During the 1930s, British anthropologist Sir Flinders Petrie discovered an assortment of items in a child’s grave in Egypt. This collection indicated an early form of bowling, dating back to around 5200 B.C.

German historians place the emergence of bowling popularity in that country at 300 A.D. Early Germans rolled or hurled stones at nine wooden clubs that they called kegles. For this reason, present-day bowlers are occasionally referred to as keglers.

Early Germans bowled in kegelbahns, which were covered sheds containing lanes of wood or sun-baked clay.

If you’re among the thousands of people who’ve rolled a bowling ball down a darkened alley, then you’ve competed in the “Moonlight Doubles.” This interesting form of tournament originated in 1943 during World War II and was appropriately dubbed the “Blackout Tournament.” The only lights allowed in the alley are at the scoring table and on the pins.

SeniorNews LineNearly half of patients who go in for orthopedic surgery are seriously deficient in vitamin D, according to a recent study. Being deficient in that vitamin compromised healing.Maybe if the patients had enough vitamin D to begin with, they wouldn’t have needed surgery in the first place. The D vitamin is essential for bone health and muscle function. It helps the body absorb calcium and can help ward off osteoporosis. There are three ways we can get enough vitamin D: exposure to the sun, eating certain foods and taking supplements. Most foods don’t have a lot of the vitamin, but these do in varying amounts: fortified orange juice, many types of fish, eggs and dairy products, and some cereals.Sunlight is tricky, especially in the winter. According to a fact sheet by the National Institutes of Health, those of us living above the 42nd parallel (approximately above a straight line from Boston to Northern California) likely don’t get enough sunlight from November to February to produce synthesis. Additionally, we seniors can’t

synthesize sun-induced vitamin D as well as we once could.Supplements are tricky, too. The amount of vitamin D needed on a daily basis is apparently up for debate. Different sources quote different amounts needed for bone strength. Too much is as bad as too little.Best bet: Write down everything you eat for a week, including drinks, and take it to your doctor. Ask if you’re getting enough vitamin D in your diet alone, or if you need a supplement or a diet addition. If you’re scheduled for surgery, ask your doctor for a vitamin D test first to make sure your levels are in the right range.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My little dog “Gellie” gets fleas quite often. A while ago in your column a reader suggested washing the dog with Dawn dish detergent and soaking her collar in something. Do you know what that something is? Also, how often should you bathe a dog? — Frances M., Batavia, N.Y.DEAR FRANCES: Unfortunately I don’t have the original column right at hand, but I did a little research for you on home remedies for getting rid of these pesky biters. The website www.stopthefleas.com is the source of the dish detergent remedy: specifically, bathing your pet in lemon-scented Dawn liquid soap. It supposedly both kills and repels fleas. It’s important to note, however, that using dish detergents or hand soaps to bathe your pet will dry out their skin. This can lead to other problems, including rashes and sores, increased allergies, and in general, a lot of discomfort for your pet — as well as making its skin more susceptible to future flea infestation. I would

recommend not using this method more than once a month, or even once every two or three months. And I’d encourage you to look for pet-friendly, natural flea-repellent soaps, which are available at pet stores.Home remedies are probably not as fast or effective as chemical remedies, and you’ll need to employ other methods to discourage fleas, including vacuuming the house at least weekly. Sprinkle a little Borax in front of the doors or plant pennyroyal near your home’s entry points. Brush your pet daily, especially if she goes outside at all, to remove dirt or grass that fleas can ride in on and dislodge flea eggs.

LET’S GO BOWLING! (continued):when a right-handed bowler’s ball strikes the left side of the head pin or when a left-hander’s ball strikes the right side of the head pin.

The “pocket” for a right-handed bowler is that space between the 1 and 3 pins. The left-hander’s pocket is between the 1 and 2.

Bowlers say they’ve been robbed when a “tap” occurs. That’s when a pin stubbornly remains standing following a seemingly perfect hit.

If you keep your eyes on the pins during your entire approach and delivery and aim directly at those pins, you are a “pin bowler.” A “spot bowler” picks a spot on the lane over which his ball must pass, and aims the ball at the spot and not at the pins.

Every bowler’s nightmare, the split, is also called a “railroad.” Bowlers call a narrow split, such as the 2-7 or the 3-10, a “baby split” or a “Murphy.” A wide split, such as the 7-10, is called “bedposts” or “mule ears.” Bowling borrows a term from football to denote a missed split. When the ball rolls between a split without touching a pin, it’s known as a field goal.

In bowling jargon, a “barmaid” isn’t the lady serving drinks, but rather one pin hidden behind another pin. Other terms for the same thing are “double wood,” “one in the dark” and “sleeper.” When a bowler talks about the “maples” or the “wooden bottles,” he’s referring to the pins.

Have you seen grandma’s teeth at the bowling alley? That’s when a random array of pins remains standing after the first ball of the frame. And if a bowler leaves a “mother-in-law,” the 7 pin wasn’t toppled.

sophomore when he became the first person in history to roll a perfect 900 series — three “300” games. “Mr. 900,” as he came to be called, accomplished this feat in February of 1997. Although a fellow named Norm Duke had bowled three consecutive 300 games the previous year, they weren’t in the same series, and Sonnenfeld’s 900 score went on the books.

The European version of bowling, called Bocce, originated in Italy and is played on the lawn. Each of the two competing teams has four 4.5-inch (11.4-cm) diameter balls and shares one 1.75-inch (4.45-cm) diameter target ball known as the “Jack” or “Pallino.” The target ball is thrown out onto the field, and then the teams alternately toss or roll their Bocce balls, hoping to land closest to the Jack, while displacing their

Foreclosures HaltedAt last count, upward of 40 states have called a temporary halt to foreclosures. Paperwork is a mess, with lenders admitting to having signed off on thousands of foreclosure documents without even having read them.If you’re facing foreclosure, now is the time that scammers will come out of the woodwork and approach you about beating the foreclosure completely — and possibly ending up with a free house. Here’s how that has worked in the past: When mortgages were moving fast, it wasn’t uncommon for a lender to immediately sell off a collection of promissory notes to someone else for a profit, take that money, lend it out and start all over again. When the “savvy” homeowner was faced with foreclosure, all he had to do was say to his original lender: “Produce the note.” With so much paper shuffling going on, often nobody could locate the actual note, the sole document with your signature on it. Unscrupulous attorneys would hustle clients into court and tell the judge, “No one can find the note. No one can prove my client actually owes any money,” and would file a form demanding to see the original note. Some people, it’s said, actually ended up with a free house. The bigger negative was that some homeowners were foreclosed on by multiple lenders, all claiming to have a right to do so.This ploy doesn’t work anymore. The reason: MERS, or Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems. MERS is party (as nominal mortgagee) to each mortgage transaction, as well as an online computer registration system for documents. If there’s a case of foreclosure where the lender needs to produce facts, MERS has them. Your note can be sold multiple times, and it will be tracked the whole way by MERS without you needing to sign anything. Or, as a party to the deal, MERS also can file for bankruptcy. According to the MERS website (www.mersinc.org), all the biggies use them, including the Federal Housing Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.Unfortunately, MERS is now embroiled in the foreclosure battle as some judges have decided that MERS has no legal standing in foreclosures, since it doesn’t actually own the loans. Hence the halt in foreclosures in many states.Best bet: If you face foreclosure, find the money to hire an attorney.

Professional bowlers use the word “logs” to refer to heavy pins used for practice. They can be up to four pounds each.

Reed Townley of Gadsden, Alabama, bowled an unusual three-game series in January of 1989. Townley’s first game had an “in-the-cellar” score of 89. He dipped even lower his second game to 87. For his third game, he changed either his style or his attitude because he bowled a perfect 300 game.

It was rather a profitable vacation for 25-year-old Brett Wolfe. In January of 2002, Wolfe became only the sixth amateur in 52 years to win the American Bowling Congress Masters. He took a few days off from work to compete, snatching the $500,000 prize from hundreds of more seasoned, professional bowlers.

Jeremy Sonnenfeld was a 20-year-old college

500 represented a charge he leads alone.McMurray didn’t make the Chase for the Sprint Cup. What he has done is win three of the season’s prestigious events. Earlier in the season, McMurray won the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400.In 2007-2008, Chase drivers won all 10 Chase races. McMurray broke that string by winning the autumn 2009 race at Talladega and did it again on Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In other words, there is life outside the Chase. Mainly it resides in the cockpit of the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevy.McMurray’s Chevy outran Kyle Busch’s Toyota in the late stages of the Bank of America 500.“After coming so close (second) in the (Coca-Cola) 600 earlier in the season, I really felt like anything less than winning (at Charlotte) would have been disappointing,” said McMurray. “We had such a great car in the spring, and it just wasn’t good enough on the short run.

“Man, it was just our night. Our car was unbelievable those last 25 or 30 laps. It was effortless to drive, and it had a lot of speed in it. It was just a really good night for us.”McMurray’s first Cup victory occurred in the same race eight years earlier. What he has learned in the past two years, in particular, is the power of prayer.“I just wanted it to be understood that, after the season that I had, or the last four years I had, I found the power of prayer, and that it’s something that I

really believe in,” he said after winning at CMS. “When I got to victory lane in Daytona, that’s what I was thinking about. You know, I was crying, obviously because I was happy, but also because you feel like a prayer has been answered.”McMurray said he was praying during the final 10 laps.“I was like, you know, if I win this race, Lord, if You don’t throw a caution, is what I said, and I win this race, I’m going to explain to people my feelings and why I felt that way.”

LET’S GO BOWLING! (continued):opponent’s ball. The ball closest to the target scores a point, and the first team to reach 12 points wins.

Don Carter, a bowling great of the 1950s and 1960s, has earned the title “Mr. Bowling.” This six-time Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) “Bowler of the Year” was the first professional bowler to reach a six-figure annual income. In his younger years, he played on a professional baseball minor league farm team but asked to be released from his contract after a year because he felt he wasn’t major league material. As a teen, he had played legion baseball with Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola.

Bowling legend Earl Anthony was the 1970s “Bowler of the Decade” and “Master of the Millennium” and was the first bowler to break the $1 million mark in earnings. He racked up 41 career PBA titles and 42 second-place finishes and was in the top five finishers 144 times, as well as being named the PBA’s “Player of the Year” six times.

Dick Weber has the distinction of being the first bowler to win a PBA title in five different decades, including two out of the first three PBA tournaments ever held.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have taught fourth grade for 20 years. This year I couldn’t wait for the summer break. I was feeling fine at the beginning of the year, but as the months passed, I could hardly make it through the day. I had no energy. My husband insisted that I see a doctor. I did. The first doctor told me I was depressed. The second one took a longer time with me and ordered a batch of blood tests. My thyroid gland isn’t working. I have a condition with a foreign-sounding name. Do you know what I’m talking about? Will you expand on it for me? — T.Y.ANSWER: I’m sure you’re referring to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The Hashimoto name is not recognized by most people. It is, however, in our part of the world, the most common cause of hypothyroidism — a nonworking thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located in the lower part of the neck. Thyroid hormone keeps all body cells and organs working at their peak efficiency. In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the immune system has attacked the gland for reasons that are not clear. It’s yet another example of an autoimmune disease, one

where the immune system turns on its own body.Signs of a lack of thyroid hormone come on gradually. Fatigue and weakness make it a heroic feat to get through the day. Hair might fall out. Skin becomes dry. Affected people feel cold when others are comfortably warm. Constipation is a common complaint. Menstrual cycles are erratic. Weight is gained in spite of a poor appetite and a decreased intake of calories. In addition to these signs, the gland often enlarges — becomes a goiter.Although Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and the resulting hypothyroidism are serious conditions, treatment is straightforward: Supply the missing thyroid hormone. Once on the pill form of the hormone, signs and symptoms disappear. It takes time, however, before a person notices big changes for the better. The booklet on thyroid disorders discusses conditions of both under- and overactive thyroid glands in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 401W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

OCTOBER FEaTuREd BusinEssFormerly from St. Louis, Takiya Smith,

owner of Beautique Lash & Brow has lived in Beaufort since 1996. She began her career in the beauty industry after obtaining her certification as a Permanent Makeup Professional earlier this year. She then received her certification as an Eyelash Extension and Eyebrow Threading Specialist and became a National Educator traveling throughout the U.S. to train and certify other beauty experts and cosmetologists. Ever since she was a child, Takiya’s had a passion and love for all things fashion, design and beauty. Seeing an opportunity to bring something new to this area, Takiya combined two things women love most — beauty and fashion, creating a beauty boutique that offers a select line of shoes, handbags and accessories. She then took it a unique step above, by offering and catering exclusively to the grooming and perfection of full, natural looking eyelashes and eyebrows.

Takiya’s clients are women from all ages, ethnicities and walks of life — mothers, daughters, professionals and entertainers. Men also come in for threading services for mustache/beard grooming. What has been most gratifying are the women who have opened up and shared their testimonies of overcoming cancer and have come to Beautique Lash & Brow for eyelash extensions or permanent make up to fill in eyebrows or eyelashes lost during chemotherapy. The joy and tears seen and shared in their feeling beautiful again has been nothing short of amazing and inspiring. Beautique Lash & Brow opened in Beaufort this past May and in Sept. opened a second location at Connie’s Creations in Bluffton.

As a single mother of two children, she lives everyday on purpose with a purpose. Having been blessed, Takiya teaches her children that the sky’s the limit. What’s in the near future for Beautique Lash & Brow? The sky’s the limit! Takiya sees franchise opportunities and many more boutiques opening along the East Coast.
