ew Jersey State Police are
spending $1.5 million to outfit
1,000 troopers over the next
nine months with body cameras. It’s a
hefty price to pay for technology, but a
very small one when considering the
good it will do.
Body cameras for police have be-come increasingly popular throughout
the country following police shootings
that made national headlines in places
such as Ferguson, Mo.
Troopers will wear the body cam-
eras on either their shirt or their hat,
and will be required to turn them on
during traffic stops, protests, investiga-
tions and while making arrests.
Acting state Attorney General JohnHoffman said the cameras “will act as
an objective witness in police-involved
shootings and other use-of-force inci-
dents.”
Some local police departments, such
as Glassboro, Paulsboro, Evesham and
even Rowan University, have already
adopted body cameras for their police
forces. And more could be coming, as
the state plans to use $2.5 million in
forfeiture funds to help other local de-
partments buy cameras.
Police body cameras are a wonderful
idea, and any state money that can be
used to help local departments outfit
their officers with them is a good
thing. The safety and security of the people
of New Jersey are of the utmost im-
portance, above all other concerns of
living in our state. Any initiative that
improves that safety and security –
while at the same time serving as an
objective judge for citizens and offi-
cers – is something that should be ex-
plored and implemented.

Rowan College at Burlington County isinviting the community to celebrate itsnew partnership with Rowan University asit unveils its new look on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
This summer, the former BurlingtonCounty College has renamed and rebrand-
ed itself as part of a new partnership withRowan University that will soon make itpossible to earn a university degree on theMount Laurel campus for about $30,000.
“Everywhere I go, I meet a student or aparent who is shocked that we have createda pathway toward a $30,000 four-year de-gree, when they are used to seeing thatprice for just one year at many universitiesthroughout the nation,” Rowan College atBurlington County President Paul Draytonsaid. “I am happy to assure them that wehave achieved a victory against the afford-ability crisis in higher education, and in-
vite everyone to celebrate this momentousoccasion for our students.”
Guests are invited to enjoy free t-shirts,refreshments from the Rowan College atBurlington County’s culinary arts pro-gram, and participate in hands-on activi-
ties led by the college’s talented faculty inareas such as biology, psychology andcriminal justice. The college’s radio sta-tion, and arts and crafts stations for chil-dren will add to the festive occasion.
At the center of the event’s happenings
is the unveiling of the new Rowan Collegeat Burlington County logo, which was se-lected with input from more than 400 facul-ty and staff members and nearly 1,700 stu-dents and alumni.
“I am proud to call myself a Rowan Col-lege at Burlington County alum, and I lookforward to this new chapter in the college’shistory that will preserve access to high-quality and affordable education in ourcounty,” said Burlington County Freehold-er Director Mary Ann O’Brien, whose legalcareer began as a paralegal student at thethen-Burlington County College. “This is a
proud time for our college, county andeveryone who works and lives in Burling-ton County.”
Another alumni who will be highlightedin the program is Mount Laurel residentand former Student Government Associa-
tion President Liz Woodward, class of 2012,who recently drew national attention bypicking up the dinner tab for two firefight-ers coming home from fighting anovernight blaze.
“Our alumni succeed in many ways
whether in business, government, the mili-tary or in small acts of kindness that em-body the spirit of service to others,” Dray-ton said. “This partnership is all about in-creasing access and opportunity for thenext generation of students so they maysucceed more quickly and with lessdebt.”
To offer students attending the event aneven greater savings, the college will hold adrawing for a free, three-credit, regularly-priced course. Students must be registeredby Aug. 18 for at least 12 credits for fall2015.
The ceremonial logo unveiling willoccur at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 18 in the rearof Votta Pavilion at the Enterprise Centeron the Mount Laurel campus. Doors openat 2:30 p.m. Guests are asked to RSVP atwww.bcc.edu/logo-event-rsvp.

The award is given to someonewho has made an outstandingcontribution to the culture andhistory of the Pine Barrens.
“It’s been a tradition long be-fore I became the pastor,” PastorAndrew Jamieson said. “We con-
tact each township and ask themto nominate a great volunteer or aparticularly special individual.”
This year’s winner for the Tab-ernacle area was Rudy Saldan of the Medford Farms Fire Compa-ny.
“Committeeman (Stephen) Leetold me about the news,” Saldansaid. “I was certainly proud.”
As the fire commissioner of the former Tabernacle Fire Dis-trict, he was instrumental in thetransition of the township now
using the Medford Farms Volun-teer Fire Company.
Last November, the state localfinance board voted 3-1 to approvethe township committee’s appli-cation to dissolve the TabernacleFire District.
The township said the dissolu-tion would save money and thatthe township would provide theessential fire protection servicesthrough a contract with the Med-ford Farms Volunteer Fire Com-pany.
Saldan has been part of fireprotection services for the resi-dents of Tabernacle for more
than 30 years. He is the formerpresident of the Medford FarmsVolunteer Fire Company and aformer Tabernacle fire commis-sioner. He is also a member of theTabernacle Fire Company No. 1.
He got involved in volunteeringa long time ago when Tabernaclefireman Tom Mason asked if hewanted to join the fire company.
“All they asked for was 10 per-cent of my time, and they neededhelp, so I joined and I’ve been
there ever since,” Saldan said.Saldan exemplifies being a vol-unteer by not looking for any par-ticular credit, and that set himaside as far as the TabernacleTownship Committee was con-cerned during the selectionprocess.
“His leadership within theemergency services communityof Tabernacle and dedication to
its residents is exemplary,” mem-bers of the Tabernacle TownshipCommittee said.
“I want to specifically congrat-ulate Rudy, it was certainly welldeserved,” CommitteemanStephen Lee said.
Rudy and his wife Ana are resi-dents of Tabernacle, and long-standing members of the Churchof the Holy Eucharist.
Saldan enjoyed his time at thechurch’s Pine Barrens Festivalwhen he came on Tabernaclenight to receive his award.
“It’s a great thing for the
church,” Saldan said. “It was alsogood for the fire company. Theyhad a table there and were givingout hats to the kids, asking peopleif they wanted to volunteer.”
“He filled three tables withfamily and friends when they didthe award presentation at the fes-tival,” Deputy Mayor RichardFranzen said. “It was really atouching thing.”

In light of the high tempera-tures recently, Freeholder Direc-tor Mary Ann O’Brien is remind-ing Burlington County residentsto stay cool, stay hydrated andstay informed.
“Keeping cool will keep youand your loved ones healthy ondays with extreme high tempera-tures,” O’Brien said. “If you donot have air conditioning, consid-er going to the mall or one of our
libraries located throughout thecounty.”For the nearest library loca-
tion, visit: www.bcls.lib.nj.us/li-braries.
“It is important to drink morefluids, but to avoid alcohol andhigh sugar drinks,” O’Brien said.“If you plan to go outside, wearloose, lightweight clothing andnever leave any persons, especial-
ly infants or young children, oranimals in a closed, parked vehi-cle.”
For more information contactthe Burlington County Health De-partment or visit CDC.gov/ex-tremeheat.
Below are also some tips toavoid heat-related illness:
• Avoid, as much as possible, working or playing in the hot sunor other hot areas. If you must be
out in the sun, wear a head cover-ing. A wide-brimmed hat or visorwill not only protect your headfrom intense rays of the sun, itwill also provide a shield for youreyes.
• Use air conditioners andfans. Open windows to releasetrapped hot air.
• Those taking regular med-ication should consult with their
physician. Some medicationscause an adverse reaction in hotweather.
• Wear lightweight clothing.• Drink plenty of non-alco-
holic liquids, warm and cool. Be-cause the body loses fluids in theheat, drinking lots of liquidshelps to avoid dehydration.
• Maintain a normal diet.• Shower or bathe in
water that is near skin tempera-
ture.• Do not leave older people, children or pets alone in cars.
• The early warning signs of heat stress are decreased energy, slight loss of appetite, faintness,light-headedness and nausea.People experiencing these symp-toms should go to a cool environ-ment, drink liquids, remove ex-cess clothing and rest.
Stay hydrated, cool andinformed during heat waves
