The holiday season is all aboutgiving, though some gifts are big-ger than others.

In Joe Pawlowski’s case, givingthe gift of life through donatingbone marrow to someone he hadnever met before is as big as itgets.

A bone marrow transplant cansave the life of someone battlingleukemia, lymphoma or otherblood cancers. Each year, leukemia kills more childrenthan any other cancer, and 70 per-cent of patients in need of a mar-row transplant do not have amatching donor in their family.

To register as a bone marrowdonor, a person swabs the insideof his or her cheek to provide theDNA needed to identify if he orshe is a bone marrow match forsomeone.

    Pawlowski, the former class of

2013 Seneca High School footballstandout who grew up in Sha-mong, is now playing at the colle-giate level for Lycoming College. This is where Pawlowski got in-volved with the Be The Matchprogram.

Former Bucknell Universityhead football coach Tim Landis isnow the recruiting coordinatorfor Lycoming where he also han-dles the quarterbacks on the field.

Along with his football savvy,he brought his knowledge of theprogram to his new school and in-troduced it to the team with the

intention of having it promote it.Pawlowski not only promoted theprogram, he got involved in it.

After being placed on the reg-

istry, he was told he might be con-tacted within the next fewmonths, years or not at all.

    Pawlowski went on to go

through a number of doctor’s ap-pointments that entailed a multi-tude of tests including bloodwork. He was then made aware hehad matched with someone andwas given the option of donatingbone marrow to this person tohelp save their life.

“I was really just playing theodds, to be honest. The odds of me getting picked were so smallthat when I found out I did, it waskind of hard to say no,” Pawlows-ki said.

The program is private in thesense that he was not given muchinformation about the man hewould be donating to, just his age, disease type and country.

However, Pawlowski did men-tion the donor’s family sent himletters of appreciation before hewent into surgery.

    “Those were special,”Pawlowski said.

Before the surgery took place,Pawlowski had to go through

some pre-surgery procedures theday before his game againstDelaware Valley College on Nov.7.

Pawlowski was still able to playin that game and help his teamrecord a much-needed victory.

However, the surgery was thenscheduled for the following Satur-day during his final game of the

The 2014-2015 school yearmarked the maiden voyage of thenew standardized test the LenapeRegional High School Districtwill be using instead of the HighSchool Proficiency Assessment – the Partnership for Assessmentof Readiness for College and Ca-reer test.

    The state Department of Edu-

cation adopted PARCC assess-ments for students in gradesthree through 11.

Statewide, high school studentsin grades nine through 11 tookEnglish language arts assess-ments and mathematics assess-ments in algebra I, geometry andalgebra II.

Students at all four LRHSDschools took the PARCC assess-ments. The tests were adminis-

tered in March and May.Superintendent Carol Birn-

bohm said the district's staff pro-vided quiet, gentle encourage-ment for all students to take thetest. However, the district did notsingle out students for refusingthe test, as it will not be a gradua-tion requirement for students inhigh school until 2019.

A large initial concern of par-ents in the district had to do withwhat would happen to these kids

    who decided against taking thetest.

A group of parents attended aboard meeting after the PARCCtesting was implemented to en-courage the district to pass a poli-cy for students choosing to optout of the PARCC test, so the stu-dents would not have to “sit andstare.”

Their message was heard andthe district did not enforce a “sit

and stare” policy. The kids whodecided not to take the test wereencouraged to read during thetest taking period.

While the results of the PARCCtesting were revealed to the pub-lic at last week’s LRHSD Board of Education meeting, student par-ticipation results were not provid-ed by the state Department of Ed-ucation and there was no analysison how participation rates couldimpact school and district per-

    formance.However, the Department of

Education shared some informa-tion last spring, inferring thelargest percentage of studentswho did not participate in thePARCC in New Jersey were highschool students, with the greatestnumber of test refusals occurringin 11th grade.

LRHSD students in grades nine, 10 and11 exceeded or equaled statewide percent-ages of students scoring Level 4 or betterand average overall scores for all Englishlanguage arts assessments.

    District-wide math results varied by

subject. LRHSD algebra II results exceededthe state average percent of students scor-ing Level 4 or better while LRHSD algebraI and geometry results were below the stateaverage percent of students scoring Level 4or better.

Justin Smith, the district’s assessment, accountability and planning coordinator, noted approximately 33,000 New Jerseystudents took the PARCC algebra I and/orgeometry assessment in middle school. Those advanced students’ scores do not fac-tor into LRHSD’s outcomes.

“A more equitable comparison forPARCC algebra and geometry would be tocompare the LRHSD average to the NewJersey average of students in grades nine

through 11 and not the entire cohort of al-gebra and geometry test-takers in New Jer-sey,” Smith said. “This comparison, of LRHSD scores to scores of only highschool students in New Jersey, revealed theLRHSD met or exceeded the New Jersey

average percent of students scoring Level 4or better for both algebra I and geometry.”

PARCC establishes a specific emphasison measuring college and career readi-ness.

Due to the drastic difference and in-creased difficulty in PARCC testing, theboard is encouraging folks to avoid com-paring these results with the HSPA andpast standardized tests.

“PARCC is a whole new ball game, a

clean slate in terms of assessment,” Smithsaid. “There is no comparison to the HSPAand, tempting as it may be, parents and stu-dents should not make comparisons to past

    Since September, Evesham Town-

ship has been helping to save

lives – quite literally, in its

    words. That month, the township

launched a pilot program funded en-

    tirely through private donations from

    businesses, groups and even citizens

that provided residents of the townwith a free ride home from a township-

based bar or restaurant if they had too

    much to drink.

    The program, called Evesham Sav-

ing Lives, partnered with popular DD

services such as Uber and BeMyDD to

keep potential drunk drivers off the

    streets.

The program worked well in the ini-

tial pilot stage, and so, it was expanded

another month. And then another. And

another. In the program’s first 100

days, officials said 800 residents used

the service. Only two of the Evesham

residents arrested for DWI during that

time came from any of the 19 locations

in town where the program is avail-

able. Before the program started, near-

ly 60 percent of those arrested for DWI

in Evesham were residents of the

town. During the program, that num-

ber dropped all the way to 5 percent.

    Last week, Voorhees Township, Eve-

    sham’s next-door neighbor but across

    county lines, partnered with Evesham

to jump on board the program. Now,

residents of either township can get a

free ride home from any establishment

in either town to keep them from mak-

ing the dumb decision of getting be-

hind the wheel while they are im-

    paired.

This new partnership is set to run

through Jan. 15, with donations fund-

ing it through that time. Evesham

    Mayor Randy Brown, a Republican,

has said he’ll make sure it continues in

    his town indefinitely, and Voorhees

    Mayor Michael Mignogna, a Democrat,

is happy to offer the program as well.

The Saving Lives program is a won-

    derful example of bipartisan politics:

    A Republican-controlled town govern-

ment in one county partners with a De-mocrat-controlled town government in

the next county over to do what gov-

ernment is intended to do – help keep

    its constituents safe.

This is a highly commendable pro-

gram – one that works, both in theory

and in practice. The two town govern-

ments should be thanked, but so, too,

    should the generous unnamed busi-

nesses, groups and residents who have

provided the donations to run it.

Now, the next step should be expan-

sion again – maybe with the help of

more towns, counties or even the state,

who could provide funding so private

    donations weren’t needed.

    Let’s make this happen.

    in our opinion

DD program should expandTow ns, counties, maybe even state should look at Evesham, Voorhees initiative

the magnitude of it,” Pawlowskisaid. “Now, looking back on it, Irealize the impact, and it’s be-come something that was all veryworth it.”

He could not say enough abouthow much his friends and familysupported him through theprocess.

“That’s really what helped mekind of figure it out as far as mak-ing my final decision,” Pawlows-ki said.

    “As parents, you teach your

children right from wrong andmanners and hope that thesethings sink in, but when yourchild comes to you and says he is

going to do such a generous thing,it takes your breath away!” hismother Kate said. “I am morethan proud of him.”

standardized test results. PARCCis a more rigorous test than theHSPA and is more closely alignedwith the SATs and other collegeentrance exams.”

Birnbohm said Common Coreand PARCC’s increased difficultyis not different from changes thestate has made in standardizedtesting in the past.

“We have a history of increas-ing rigor in our standards,” shesaid.

Birnbohm described PARCC asan opportunity for students toperfect their skills. She notedother tests such as the SAT arebeing aligned to Common CoreState Standards in 2016 and willfeature questions similar toPARCC.

“This is another chance forthem to practice and show theirproficiency,” Birnbohm said.

    LRHSD is now actively en-

gaged in reviewing and analyzingthe first year PARCC data andpreparing for the 2016 and futurePARCC assessments, with an em-phasis on student success.

“Our data team is workingwith the administrative teams ineach of the schools to ensure theyunderstand and communicateabout PARCC in general and putthe results in context,” Birnbohmsaid. “Teachers will be able to uti-lize our new common planningtime, built into the new four dayrotating schedule, to analyzePARCC data, our curriculum andour pacing guides.

“We understand this is a new

assessment and there will begrowth over time, but most im-portantly, we understand thePARCC is only one measure of astudent’s success. We rely onmany indicators (teacher input, class grades, PSAT, AP, etc.) tohelp shape a student’s program inorder to support all of our stu-dents in reaching their goal of ei-ther two graduations (high schooland then college) or a career.”
