The Kenneth R. Olson Middle School Li-brary played host to a standing-room-onlyboard of education meeting last week. After Superintendent George Rafferty

accepted the superintendent position inMt. Laurel earlier this month, many Taber-nacle residents who have been encourag-ing this breakup for months marked thedate of this meeting on their calendars. Many gathered to express their feelings

on the departure of the school district’s su-perintendent. Some even made t-shirts toexpress their excitement of his departure.Rafferty’s resignation will be effective

on May 11, or on an earlier date if mutually

agreed upon.Jennifer Herpen has been coming to

meetings for two years with one single pur-pose on her mind – to ensure a change bemade to the top of the administration. While she voiced her opinion during thepublic comment session supporting the de-parture of Rafferty, she was disgruntled bythe 90-day grace period.“My question is, can it happen now? I

think 90 days is too long. I think 90 secondsis too long,” Herpen said.A multitude of residents also expressed

their displeasure over something agreedon at a meeting in November. The item re-quested the district pay for Rafferty’scourses completed while he is pursuing hisdoctorate in educational leadership from

Wilmington University. The board refused to disclose whether

Rafferty had completed the courses. Resi-dent Steve Pickholtz requested the boardrescind that offer if the courses have notbeen completed by the end of Rafferty’sterm.“If he’s going to Mt. Laurel and earning

a doctorate, let Mt. Laurel pay for it,” hesaid. Many residents were also up in arms

about the amount of money revealed dur-ing the meeting being spent on legal fees. The board originally budgeted about$22,000 for this matter and has now spentupward of $92,000.

Tabernacle says goodbye to superintendent

For once, it seems that Gov.Christie and his team haveshown some restraint when it

comes to projecting the state’s revenue.Maybe his failed bid for the Republicannomination for president humbledhim. OK, probably not.In any case, unlike the last couple

years, Christie’s proposed budget thathe revealed last week is projecting amodest 3.1 percent revenue growth. That’s a breath of fresh air comparedto more recent years, when revenueprojections seemed unrealistic at theget-go and then proved to be exactlythat by the end of the year. Those revenue “shortfalls,” if you

can even call them that, caused seriousproblems for the state, both in terms ofbalancing the budget and also in thecase of having its credit rating down-graded – again and again.

For FY 2017, though, it looks likeChristie and his team have finally de-cided to go the conservative route. Christie is hoping his $34.8 billion

proposed budget will be the start ofmaking the “next two years great onesfor our state,” as he said in his budgetspeech last week. It’s nice, as well, thatChristie sounded focused on local is-sues in our state, rather than larger na-tional and even international issues ashe was campaigning for the big seat inWashington.Christie’s proposed budget includes

no tax increases and the largest pay-ment ever to the state’s pension plan –$1.86 billion. His opponents will saythat’s still not enough, falling wayshort of what actuaries say is neces-sary to keep the pension fund healthy. His opponents will also say

Christie’s budget has failed to addressthe Transportation Trust Fund, whichis in dire shape and could be out ofmoney by as early as June. That’s a se-rious problem, one that Christie saidstill can be fixed in time. The long-term impact of Christie’s

proposed budget won’t be seen any-time soon. We don’t love that it doesn’tinclude increased funding to areassuch as public school aid. However, there are times when spending mustbe curbed to get a budget in line, evenif that takes a few years, and nowseems to be one of those times.

in our opinion

Gov.’s budget shows restraintConservative revenue projections are nice to see

students who are heavily involvedwith everything to share theirperspectives of life inside theirrespective schools.Last week, Lenape and

Shawnee gave their presenta-tions. Seneca and Cherokee willbe speaking at the March 16 meet-ing.Lenape kicked off the report

with seniors Megan Donahue andJames Arcenas, who were select-ed by Principal Tony Cattani torepresent the Indians.“Our two students had the

daunting task of trying to recapsome of the things that have hap-pened at Lenape in the past sixmonths or so,” Cattani said.Donahue is the student council

president and a cheerleader whowill be attending Alabama Uni-versity in the fall. Arcenas is the2016 class president and will be at-tending Rutgers University aftergraduation.Shawnee capped off the pres-

entation with seniors Krista Hoff-man and Eric Biehn, who werechosen by Principal MatthewCampbell to represent the Rene-

gades.Hoffman is the student council

president and a captain for theShawnee field hockey team. Shewill be continuing her career atPrinceton University next yearwhile 2016 class president Biehnwill be attending Duke Universityin the fall. All four students exhibited

great school pride as they shareda number of different highlightswith the board. They all began by speaking

about how successful they feel thetransition into the new four-dayrotating schedule has been.“I’ve seen students really learn

to enjoy the new schedule,” Don-ahue said. “One thing I reallyenjoy about it is our senior court-yard at Lenape. When it’s niceout, the seniors have somewhereto go to relax and eat lunch.”“I’m glad I’m able to get a rest

day from each class, and I don’thave to repeat the same eight-class schedule,” Arcenas said.“Also, since we don’t have home-rooms, class office has the oppor-tunity to accomplish tasks duringlunch now.”“Honestly, the classes don’t feel

that long compared to last year, and we can fit a lot of new in-struction time in during that peri-od,” Biehn said.

“I think it gets you better pre-pared for college.”“We have less classes a day,”

Hoffman said. “It’s less over-whelming because it’s less tofocus on at one time.”The students then went on to

touch on all of the fun events, ac-tivities, programs, communityservice and awards their schoolswere able to capture in the pastsix months.Campbell alluded to how hard

an assignment this was with thevast variety of things they couldhave included in their presenta-tion, especially after watchingLenape’s and realizing how muchthey have in common.“I have to concur with Mr. Cat-

tani, this is a very difficult task. There are so many wonderfulthings that happen in our schools, unfortunately we’re not able toshow them all to you, but hopeful-ly you’ll get a real good idea ofthe great things that go on,”Campbell said. The board was very impressed

with all of the information andpersonal insight it was able to at-tain from each student.“You guys did a great job. I

hope you guys continue to be soinvolved and continue to do greatthings!” Birnbohm said.

Pickholtz suggested the boardnot employ a lawyer during themeetings to help reduce these

costs. He expressed his belief thatthe $170-per-hour fee they pay thelawyer to sit in on the meetings asan unnecessary luxury that theboard didn’t used to employ be-fore the problems between thepublic and the superintendentarouse.

Pickholtz suggested having alawyer sit there month aftermonth could be the reason for theincrease in legal fees.“I think we can do without (the

lawyers) at the board meetings,”he said.“I don’t think we need legal

representation, especially nowthat our main problem is out thedoor,” resident Kelly Kemps said.Rafferty’s resignation was orig-

inally placed under personnel onthe agenda but upon further ex-amination was separately held toresolve after executive session. The board accepted Rafferty’s

letter of resignation, effectiveupon the appointment of an inter-im chief school administrator.

it from the early stages.A group of girls interested in

joining the first-ever dance teamarranged a table at Seneca’s firstannual activities fair duringLunch and Learn in early Novem-ber. The interest level was initially

high, with 15 people signing up,but due to other commitmentsand time issues, the team has sixmembers – Hailey Chapman,Evola, Hyeon Jung, Brianna Mc-Nally, Danielle Romanuski andSavannah Thomas. Some of the girls have as many

as 12 years of formal dance train-ing while others have minimaltraining. It is a diverse group of

girls when it comes to experience, but their dedication is all skyhigh.“They all have really good

rhythm and have come togetherto form a cohesive team,” Wildensaid. The group did not have a prac-

tice room until January, so it gottogether wherever it could in themeantime to work on its skills. Itgathered in a small space in thecounseling center and even prac-ticed every day during Lunch andLearn to ensure the first perform-ance would be a hit.The second performance will

take place at the Golden EaglePageant on March 15. The pag-eant is a contest between six sen-ior boys and six senior girls com-peting for the titles of Mr. and Ms.Golden Eagle. They will accumulate points

based on their scores in severalcategories such as monthly pres-entation, talent, formal wear, fish-bowl, congeniality and audiencefavorite. In between each act, the dance

team will perform. There willalso be a scholarship collectionfor a Student Council-sponsoredGolden Eagle Pageant Scholar-ship at graduation. As far as the dance team goes,

the future looks bright. Wildenhas taken the head coaching roleand run with it, saying it has beena rewarding experience for her. Infact, she is already looking intocompetitions for next year. “This year, since we formed the

group so late, we are performingonly at these two events. But nextyear, I have permission to take thegroup to competitions,” Wildensaid.
