COASTAL PROPERTY OUTLOOK

Property prices in many coastal areas have stabilised and in some instances are even starting to rise again, mostly

on the back of increased investor interest.

And this, it seems, is not confined to fashionable coastal resorts but also focused on picturesque small towns

where free-standing seafront homes can often be had for less than a quarter of the price of similar properties.

A powerful reason is that improved properties in smaller coastal towns currently offer really excellent value for

money – and the real prospect of sturdy growth over the next 10 years.

WORLD GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS SA 2012

South Africa will host its biggest golfing tournament yet

when the multimillion-dollar World Golf Championship

is played in the country in 2012.

The event will draw the top 70 golfers from around the

world, dwarfing South Africa’s current premier golfing

tournament, the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

The new addition to the country’s golfing calendar has

been brought about after much negotiation between the

US PGA Tour, the International Federation of PGA Tours

and Sunshine Tours in Augusta, Georgia, US.

Commissioner of Sunshine Tours, Gareth Tindall, said

on his return from Augusta: “This is, without doubt, the

most significant milestone in the history of professional

golf in South Africa.

“It is something that we as the Sunshine Tour have been

working on for a long time and the unanimous support

that we have received from the other professional tours

around the world confirms the major standing of our

players and the Sunshine Tour in world golf.”

SA EMPLOYMENT RATE AT RECORD HIGH

The employment rate in South Africa hit a two-and-a-half

year record high in March, according to the Adcorp

Employment Index released on 11 April 2011.

Thousands of jobs opened up in all major sectors as

total national employment grew by 5.6% last month

compared to February.

“This is the first time in well over two-and-a-half years

that all sectors, occupations and employment types

recorded positive growth,” said Adcorp’s CEO, Richard

Pike.

The transport sector enjoyed the highest employment

growth rate with 18.3%. Mining now employs about 316

000 workers, as employment grew by 11.5%.

Manufacturing now has over 1.4-million employees.

Showing good recovery from the recession, employment

in this sector grew by almost 9.4% from February. It

experienced a -3.4% decline in February compared to

January.

Results of a survey commissioned by the Independent

Electoral Commission (IEC) have revealed that 79% of

citizens intend to vote in the local elections on 18 May,

while just 21% will abstain.

Voting interest among South Africans was generally

higher with over 90% expressing satisfaction with

regards to the country’s voting process.

About 500 specific areas were visited with seven

households selected in each area and face to face

interviews conducted in the language of the

respondents. Those interviewed were aged 16 and older

and ran across different race and ethnic groups.

The IEC says it commissioned the research, conducted

by the Human Science Research Council, to assess

voter readiness ahead of the local government elections

on 18 May. The research will be used in their ongoing

preparations for elections and assess where they need

to improve.

MORE VOTING SOUTH AFRICANS 2011

BURRY STANDER FIRST EPIC WIN

On his fourth attempt, Burry Stander became the first

South African to win the ABSA Cape Epic when the eight-

day, 707km mountain bike race finished at Lourensford

Wine Estate near Cape Town on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Stander and his Swiss teammate,

Christoph Sauser, racing for the 36One-Songo-

Specialized team, finished fifth on the eighth and final

stage, but had built up a lead of more than 10 minutes

over their nearest rivals during the gruelling race and

simply had to finish without encountering any problems

to secure one of the most coveted titles in international

bicycle racing.

Stander, the 2009 Under-23 World Champion in the

Olympic Cross-country discipline, combined well with

Sauser, a similarly versatile racer, to capture the title on

their fourth attempt. For 34-year-old Sauser, the victory

was one of his career highlights.

After suffering through the economic recession, the local

vehicle manufacturing industry has clawed back

significantly over the last 15 months and further growth

is forecast.

The total of 53 478 new vehicles sold in March is the

highest since March 2008. It represents a 22.8% sales

growth compared to the same period in 2010.

Figures released by the National Association

Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) on

April 4 also show that exports also climbed to 29 254

new vehicles, a 37.4% year-on-year improvement.

A total of 492 956 new vehicles, including cars, trucks,

buses and vans, were sold in 2010. This was a 24.7%

improvement from the 395 186 sold in 2009, when

recession was at its worst.

VEHICLE MANUFACTURING STARTING TO BOOM

INCREASE OF FIRST TIME BUYERS

First National Bank (FNB says its estate agent survey

results have shown a noticeable increase in first-time

home buying.

First-time buying of homes is on the increase and is

contributing in some way to the reversal of the 'ageing

buyer' trend seen in recent years.

The percentage of first-time buyers climbed to 22% in

the first quarter of this year, from 17% in the preceding

quarter. This percentage compared favourably with the

percentages recorded around late-2006, although the

absolute volume would still be significantly lower than

then because the overall market volumes were

considerably lower these days compared to then, said

FNB property strategist John Loos.

He said the percentage of first-time buying was arguably

a good confidence barometer, because first-time buyers

generally had more flexibility regarding the timing of their

entry into the home-buying market.

BOND APPLICATION HIGHEST IN 3 YEARS

Bond applications reached their highest level in three

years and bond approvals were at the highest value

since October 2008 according to figures released by

bond originating company ooba.

The statistics showed that the average number of bond

applications in March was 36% higher that the average

monthly number of applications in 2010. However, the

figures represent just 36% of the applications recorded

when the property market was at its peak in May 2007.

Saul Geffen, chief executive of ooba says that the

organisation has experienced consistent month-on-

month growth in applications for mortgage finance since

the beginning of the current year.

“February was significantly higher and March was even

better than that,” he says, adding that ooba expected the

number of bond applications to continue increasing over

the next few months.

SA EMPLOYMENT RATE AT RECORD HIGH

The employment rate in South Africa hit a two-and-a-half

year record high in March, according to the Adcorp

Employment Index released on 11 April 2011.

Thousands of jobs opened up in all major sectors as

total national employment grew by 5.6% last month

compared to February.

“This is the first time in well over two-and-a-half years

that all sectors, occupations and employment types

recorded positive growth,” said Adcorp’s CEO, Richard

Pike.

The transport sector enjoyed the highest employment

growth rate with 18.3%. Mining now employs about 316

000 workers, as employment grew by 11.5%.

Manufacturing now has over 1.4-million employees.

Showing good recovery from the recession, employment

in this sector grew by almost 9.4% from February. It

experienced a -3.4% decline in February compared to

January.

Results of a survey commissioned by the Independent

Electoral Commission (IEC) have revealed that 79% of

citizens intend to vote in the local elections on 18 May,

while just 21% will abstain.

Voting interest among South Africans was generally

higher with over 90% expressing satisfaction with

regards to the country’s voting process.

About 500 specific areas were visited with seven

households selected in each area and face to face

interviews conducted in the language of the

respondents. Those interviewed were aged 16 and older

and ran across different race and ethnic groups.

The IEC says it commissioned the research, conducted

by the Human Science Research Council, to assess

voter readiness ahead of the local government elections

BURRY STANDER FIRST EPIC WIN

On his fourth attempt, Burry Stander became the first

South African to win the ABSA Cape Epic when the eight-

day, 707km mountain bike race finished at Lourensford

Wine Estate near Cape Town on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Stander and his Swiss teammate,

Christoph Sauser, racing for the 36One-Songo-

Specialized team, finished fifth on the eighth and final

stage, but had built up a lead of more than 10 minutes

over their nearest rivals during the gruelling race and

simply had to finish without encountering any problems

to secure one of the most coveted titles in international

bicycle racing.

Stander, the 2009 Under-23 World Champion in the

Olympic Cross-country discipline, combined well with

Sauser, a similarly versatile racer, to capture the title on

their fourth attempt. For 34-year-old Sauser, the victory

VEHICLE MANUFACTURING STARTING TO BOOM

INCREASE OF FIRST TIME BUYERS

First National Bank (FNB says its estate agent survey

results have shown a noticeable increase in first-time

home buying.

First-time buying of homes is on the increase and is

contributing in some way to the reversal of the 'ageing

buyer' trend seen in recent years.

The percentage of first-time buyers climbed to 22% in

the first quarter of this year, from 17% in the preceding

quarter. This percentage compared favourably with the

percentages recorded around late-2006, although the

absolute volume would still be significantly lower than

then because the overall market volumes were

considerably lower these days compared to then, said

FNB property strategist John Loos.

He said the percentage of first-time buying was arguably

a good confidence barometer, because first-time buyers

generally had more flexibility regarding the timing of their

entry into the home-buying market.

monthly number of applications in 2010. However, the

momentum – despite rising fuel prices signaling increased inflation.

Never before has "now is the right time to acquire property been more

relevant"  Indeed there are still good buys to be had, particularly as property

WORLD BUSINESS UPDATE

Africa and the World:

Walmart has launched an urgent High Court application

in Windhoek challenging the Namibian Competition

Commission’s decision to impose local ownership

conditions. The company is also encountering

opposition to its entry into the South African market, as is

Japan's Kansai. French bank BNP Paribas is to open an

office in Nigeria and boost its South African investment

banking presence. The Carlyle Group also plans to open

offices in Johannesburg and Lagos. New US visa

application procedures with lower fees for applicants in

South Africa have been introduced. The IMF and the

Government of Kenya held a conference to help improve
