Thank you to all our fellow Awesome South Africans
It’s all over – the expectation of the world and the anticipation of each and
every South African. South Africa made headlines once again and it wasn’t
only about the soccer – it was also amazement, it was praise, it was
congratulations and it was celebrations. This world cup reinforced the
saying: We’ve done it before we can do it again. We may take the
rollercoaster route and leave things to the 11th hour but wow ...when we get
there we sure make a statement.

INVESTMENTING HOTEL SUITES
WITH the rapid growth of the South African tourism market over the past few years,
hotel suite investments are fast becoming one of the popular ways for South Africans
to invest in the property market.
However, as this is a relatively new concept in the country, a lot of people do not fully
understand this type of property investment.
Hotel suite investment is a direct investment that enables investors to purchase a suite
in a hotel development in terms of the Sectional Titles Act, just as they would a
sectional title apartment.
The unit is then contracted to the hotel and forms part of what is known as a “rental
pool”, where the revenue of the hotel is distributed to the individual rental pool
participants. But investing in a hotel suite is not the same as investing in a property
syndication. In a property syndication, investors collectively buy into a single property
and own an individual share in it.
As such, they do not hold a title to their property in their own names.
Property syndications are unlisted investment schemes and can be structured in
various ways, with several cost layers.
They are not subject to the rules and regulations of a formal exchange and … there is
often scope for the creators of those schemes to manipulate property values and
investors.

SA'S TOP 10 SPORTING EVENTS
South Africa has played host to more international
sporting events than any other country in the world since
1994. With the 2010 World Cup currently in full swing,
here are ten of SA’s best sporting events that have
captured the world’s attention
Nedbank Golf Challenge
The annual Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City in the
North West Province consistently attracts a world-class
field, and for good reason. “Africa’s Major” is one of the
world’s richest tournaments, with a total prize fund of
US$4.385 million. The premier event remains the most
popular tournament on the South African golfing
calendar, with record numbers of spectators flocking to
Sun City to watch the best golfers in the world do battle
at the Gary Player Country Club.
The course was designed by South Africa’s greatest
sportsman of the twentieth century, Gary Player, and
South African hotel mogul, Sol Kerzner, and takes place
at the end of each year after the PGA Tour.

SPAIN TRIUMPH IN FIRST AFRICAN WORLD CUP
Spain gloried in a first World Cup triumph in Africa's first
hosting of the tournament that finally buried Spain's
decades-old tag of international underachievers, and
silenced critics that said South Africa would never be
able to do it.
Crowds in Madrid and elsewhere partied through the
night long after the last "Ole" sounded inside Soccer City,
Johannesburg, the scene of Spain's greatest soccer
moment.
"We still don't realise the full extent of this. It is
something incredible," match-winner Andres Iniesta said
while thousands of Spaniards left the famous stadium in
Soweto singing his name.
In Amsterdam, there was utter dejection as the Dutch
saw history repeat itself after defeats in 1974 and 1978
finals.

SA BUSINESS CONFIDENCE GETS A BOOST
Despite indications that the global economy may remain
depressed over the medium term, the successful
hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup could boost
domestic business confidence, the South African
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) said on
Thursday.
The chamber, which reported a 2,8 point increase in its
June Business Confidence Index (BCI) to 84,8 points,
stated that the 2010 FIFA World Cup had already raised
positive sentiment domestically and internationally.
"If the momentum provided by the [2010 FIFA] World Cup
is appropriately harnessed and directed, longer-term
economic benefits will

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR TENANTS
The current economic situation being experienced in
South Africa and around the world, although improving
somewhat on last year, is still putting great pressure on
commercial and retail property owners who are seeing
significant pressure on commercial property values.
Statistics show that rentals are down and vacancies are
up, which has major implications for rental growth, the
main driver of optimistic valuations of commercial
property.
Certain retail centres are feeling the pressure with
consumers keeping their belts tightened, to the point that
some retailers have shut shop or moved to cheaper
premises - leaving rental vacancies that landlords can ill
afford.
Landlords need to make tenant retention in retail,
commercial and industrial property

IMPROVEMENTS TO PROPERTY THAT PAY
Some luxurious but costly improvements that are
commonly viewed as value-builders are actually losers
when it's time to sell.
The real dogs in terms of payback at resale are luxury
items that are highly individual to the owner's taste.
Things like Jacuzzis and tennis courts are very low on
the payback scale. Saunas are a complete waste of
money as are Koi ponds and water features.
The most definite way to recoup costs
Kitchen improvements are perhaps the most definite
way to recoup your revamping costs, depending on the
nature of the changes and assuming that you don't
spend too much relative to the value of the home.

WHEN TO UPGRADE YOUR HOME
There are all sorts of reasons for homeowners to
contemplate moving to a bigger or more upmarket
property, such as the need for more space to
accommodate a new home business, growing children
or ageing parents, or perhaps just the desire to live in a
better area.
But they should not make the leap until they have made
sure most of the following indicators are positive:
* Income. Upgrading will generally mean a bigger home
loan repayment every month. You need to take an honest
look at your budget and your employment / salary
prospects to see if this would make sense for your
family.
* Interest rates. Low interest rates make it easier

KEY INSIGHTS ON SOUTH AFRICAN REAL ESTATE
The global financial crisis had less of an impact in South
Africa than on many developing countries. Growth had
already been slowing in 2008. The economy contracted
1.8% in 2009. We think that it is reasonable to suggest
that GDP will expand 4-5% annually from 2011 to 2014.
However, this depends on continuing Chinese demand
for South African mineral exports.
Although rental rates fell in each of the three main sub-
sectors last year – and in each of the three cities
(Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban) for which we
gathered data – the slippage was less than in many of

THE INPACT OF THE WORLD CUP
Colombian popstar Shakira visited some of South
Africa's new and revamped real estate developments
while in the country for her 2010 World Cup
performances. Her stay in the luxurious penthouse of the
epic Radisson Blu Sandton certainly didn't go unnoticed
by the media. That's thanks to the fact that Radisson is
the largest international hotel brand in South Africa
supporting the World Cup games.
Over the course of the month, visitors were exposed to
quite a bit of South Africa's real estate, an opportunity the
country hopes to greatly benefit from. With the games in
Johannesburg and Cape Town -- and Durban, Pretoria,
Port Elizabeth, Rustenburg, Polokwane and
Bloemfontein -- came new hotels, new stadiums and
new large-scale real estate developments hoping to
advance the African nation.

CRISPY SKIN ROAST CHICKEN WITH ONION GRAVY
My mother used to rub the skin on roast pork with a mixture of seasoning and
baking powder to make it crispy. I tried a variation of this method on chicken
with excellent results. One gets an even crispier skin and leaner meat if you
loosen the skin over the breast and thighs.

SA'S TOP 10 SPORTING EVENTS
South Africa has played host to more international
sporting events than any other country in the world since
1994. With the 2010 World Cup currently in full swing,
here are ten of SA’s best sporting events that have
captured the world’s attention
Nedbank Golf Challenge
The annual Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City in the
North West Province consistently attracts a world-class
field, and for good reason. “Africa’s Major” is one of the
world’s richest tournaments, with a total prize fund of
US$4.385 million. The premier event remains the most
popular tournament on the South African golfing
calendar, with record numbers of spectators flocking to
Sun City to watch the best golfers in the world do battle
at the Gary Player Country Club.
The course was designed by South Africa’s greatest
sportsman of the twentieth century, Gary Player, and
South African hotel mogul, Sol Kerzner, and takes place
at the end of each year after the PGA Tour.

SPAIN TRIUMPH IN FIRST AFRICAN WORLD CUP
Spain gloried in a first World Cup triumph in Africa's first
hosting of the tournament that finally buried Spain's
decades-old tag of international underachievers, and
silenced critics that said South Africa would never be
able to do it.
Crowds in Madrid and elsewhere partied through the
night long after the last "Ole" sounded inside Soccer City,
Johannesburg, the scene of Spain's greatest soccer
moment.
"We still don't realise the full extent of this. It is
something incredible," match-winner Andres Iniesta said
while thousands of Spaniards left the famous stadium in
Soweto singing his name.
In Amsterdam, there was utter dejection as the Dutch
saw history repeat itself after defeats in 1974 and 1978
finals.

SA BUSINESS CONFIDENCE GETS A BOOST
Despite indications that the global economy may remain
depressed over the medium term, the successful
hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup could boost
domestic business confidence, the South African
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) said on
Thursday.
The chamber, which reported a 2,8 point increase in its
June Business Confidence Index (BCI) to 84,8 points,
stated that the 2010 FIFA World Cup had already raised
positive sentiment domestically and internationally.
"If the momentum provided by the [2010 FIFA] World Cup
is appropriately harnessed and directed, longer-term
economic benefits will

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR TENANTS
The current economic situation being experienced in
South Africa and around the world, although improving
somewhat on last year, is still putting great pressure on
commercial and retail property owners who are seeing
significant pressure on commercial property values.
Statistics show that rentals are down and vacancies are
up, which has major implications for rental growth, the
main driver of optimistic valuations of commercial
property.
Certain retail centres are feeling the pressure with
consumers keeping their belts tightened, to the point that
some retailers have shut shop or moved to cheaper
premises - leaving rental vacancies that landlords can ill
afford.
Landlords need to make tenant retention in retail,
commercial and industrial property

IMPROVEMENTS TO PROPERTY THAT PAY
Some luxurious but costly improvements that are
commonly viewed as value-builders are actually losers
when it's time to sell.
The real dogs in terms of payback at resale are luxury
items that are highly individual to the owner's taste.
Things like Jacuzzis and tennis courts are very low on
the payback scale. Saunas are a complete waste of
money as are Koi ponds and water features.
The most definite way to recoup costs
Kitchen improvements are perhaps the most definite
way to recoup your revamping costs, depending on the
nature of the changes and assuming that you don't
spend too much relative to the value of the home.

WHEN TO UPGRADE YOUR HOME
There are all sorts of reasons for homeowners to
contemplate moving to a bigger or more upmarket
property, such as the need for more space to
accommodate a new home business, growing children
or ageing parents, or perhaps just the desire to live in a
better area.
But they should not make the leap until they have made
sure most of the following indicators are positive:
* Income. Upgrading will generally mean a bigger home
loan repayment every month. You need to take an honest
look at your budget and your employment / salary
prospects to see if this would make sense for your
family.
* Interest rates. Low interest rates make it easier

KEY INSIGHTS ON SOUTH AFRICAN REAL ESTATE
The global financial crisis had less of an impact in South
Africa than on many developing countries. Growth had
already been slowing in 2008. The economy contracted
1.8% in 2009. We think that it is reasonable to suggest
that GDP will expand 4-5% annually from 2011 to 2014.
However, this depends on continuing Chinese demand
for South African mineral exports.
Although rental rates fell in each of the three main sub-
sectors last year – and in each of the three cities
(Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban) for which we
gathered data – the slippage was less than in many of

THE INPACT OF THE WORLD CUP
Colombian popstar Shakira visited some of South
Africa's new and revamped real estate developments
while in the country for her 2010 World Cup
performances. Her stay in the luxurious penthouse of the
epic Radisson Blu Sandton certainly didn't go unnoticed
by the media. That's thanks to the fact that Radisson is
the largest international hotel brand in South Africa
supporting the World Cup games.
Over the course of the month, visitors were exposed to
quite a bit of South Africa's real estate, an opportunity the
country hopes to greatly benefit from. With the games in
Johannesburg and Cape Town -- and Durban, Pretoria,
Port Elizabeth, Rustenburg, Polokwane and
Bloemfontein -- came new hotels, new stadiums and
new large-scale real estate developments hoping to
advance the African nation.

CRISPY SKIN ROAST CHICKEN WITH ONION GRAVY
My mother used to rub the skin on roast pork with a mixture of seasoning and
baking powder to make it crispy. I tried a variation of this method on chicken
with excellent results. One gets an even crispier skin and leaner meat if you
loosen the skin over the breast and thighs.
1 fresh chicken
Ina Paarman's Rosemary & Olive Seasoning
1 T (15 ml) butter
1 small lemon, cut in quarters
4 sprigs of fresh rosemary or thyme

1 onion, cut into quarters
4 sprigs of fresh rosemary or thyme
