NOTES FROM FATHER BOB…

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2015

Jesus trained his disciples to be good shepherds, to go out to the villages and to preach and teach and

cure people. When they returned he advised them to take a rest in a quiet place – someone must take

care of the workers – and so they set off for a lakeside holiday. Only, when they arrive, they find that the

hungry crowds are there before them, waiting for some spiritual food. So this time, the Lord himself sets

to work. His disciples can take a back seat and rest awhile. Jesus himself will preach and teach. In this

way the prophecy of Jeremiah is fulfilled, which said that God would raise up a virtuous branch for

David, a man who will be wise, who will practice honesty and integrity in the land. Jesus is the integrity

of God.

Saint Paul takes up the theme today and shows how our Lord appeals to people across all religious and

political divides. He isn’t on any one side against another. The Lord will break down all the bad feelings

between people. No enemies, no strangers, only friends. In himself Jesus makes a single New Man out

of people, who want to be enemies. He restores peace in his own body on the cross. He reconciles us to

God.

So you cannot follow Our Lord or be part of Our Lord and still have enemies. It cannot be. It has to be

peace: peace with people who are far away, peace with people who are near. Political slogans often say,

‘This is the last chance for peace’ but this cannot be true. The work of peace is too important for last

chances. Every day the call goes out to gather the scattered sheep. Every day people meet with fear and

with terror. In response to this, the Good Shepherd sends out his disciples with orders to gather the

scattered sheep, to care for them and to help them to grow and increase.

In every generation the Lord has been our Good Shepherd. In every country in the world you will find

his image, his picture, and his people. Down all the days, in every way the Good Shepherd cares for his

flock. Now he speaks to us today and asks us to see the large crowds of our own world, sheep without a

shepherd. He asks us to have compassion for people who are lost and confused. He exhorts us to take

responsibility in their regard, to set ourselves to teach them at some length.

If we read our scriptures each and every day, then we will grow into the three great principles of life –

truthfulness, compassion and forbearance. As good shepherds and followers of the Lord we must listen

and preach and then look forward to our holiday on the lakeside.

Summer Blessings and Peace, Father Bob Pastor

GOD’S WORD TODAY

Today’s Gospel passage is one of the most moving in all of scripture. Even though most of us do not have experience as sheep farmers, we can nevertheless try to picture the metaphor used at the end of this Gospel reading. Jesus looks out on the crowd and is moved with pity for them, for they “were like sheep without a shepherd.” Apparently sheep are not the brightest of God’s creatures and are in constant need of their shepherd. One might wonder what the attitude of Christ would be today if he gazed on this world of ours. Would he be moved to pity because we, too, are like sheep without a shepherd? Let us pray that God’s word proclaimed this day will inspire us to cling to the Good Shepherd and listen to his teachings.

Operation Support Our Troops-America is a volunteer non-profit (501c3) organization whose mission is to improve the morale of troops serving in harms way, support the families of the deployed military, and provide support for the returning wounded. In 2014, Operation Support Our Troops America collected and bagged and shipped approximately 1.7 million pounds filling 4,000 25 lb. care boxes to military members who are deployed. This organization also helps to sponsor the Leap of Faith program for Families of the Fallen, Christmas stockings, Equine Therapy for Veterans, House 53 on the grounds of Hines VA Hospital as well as other programs. You can help by donating the items listed below to be included in boxes shipped to our troops. Each military person receives a package weighing approximately 25 lbs. and costs about $25 to ship. Please check the expiration dates on the items you donate. We always need letters to our troops, from every age. If you can’t write, color a picture!

Items for the care boxes can be dropped off in the church narthex the weekends of August 1/2 and August 8/9. Please help us send support and care to those who so bravely serve their country. If you have a family member or friend who is currently serving in the military and would like their name listed in the Canticle so our parish family can pray them, please call Eugenia Callison at (708) 508-0799

We served 174 households at our July 9 monthly food distribution. Grocery donations from our parishioners and various other individuals, churches, and organizations, as well as donations of volunteer time for preparing bags, setting up and distributing, are what keep us going. Thank you for your continuing generosity! It’s not necessary to bring every item we need each week (although we will graciously and gratefully accept them!), but if everyone could just bring one or two items, it would help us greatly. Most needed items at this time: boxed sides, canned pasta, jelly, canned peaches, canned peas, mixed

vegetables, condiments, cooking oil, canned or powdered milk. Please mark your calendar for our “Share the Wealth” distribution of fresh garden produce, which will take place

at our August 13 monthly food distribution. Donations need to be dropped off at church on that day, between 4:45-5:45 p.m. It is important to remember that we can accept such donations only at this time, because of our storage and distribution limitations.

We are also requesting school supply donations to distribute in August to our client families, including pencils, colored pencils, pens, crayons, markers, pocket folders, erasers, single subject spiral notebooks and loose leaf paper.

Monetary donations are also appreciated. Checks should be written to St. Cletus Social Concerns/School Supplies.

If you have any questions, please contact me at (708) 215-5418, or at [email protected]. Thank you for your generous spirit as you do your household shopping. ST. 2015 SUMMER PROJECTS

We are definitely in the midst of summer and I wanted to let you know some of the projects that are or will be taking place as we prepare for a new liturgical season in the fall. Due to increased enrollment in our pre-school program we are dividing Room 98 into two separate

classrooms with a folding wall separating the rooms so it can still be used as one large room when necessary.

Wood finishing of the two side alcoves in the sanctuary. The wood will match the sanctuary backdrop and cover the brick by the Tabernacle and the Holy Family Shrine.

Continue with the process of replacing more windows in the school with energy efficient ones. This will take place in phases over the next several years until completed.

Refurbishing of the metal work around the Tabernacle and the metal work above the Tabernacle. Replacement of a few lights over the altar area in the sanctuary. Normal landscaping upkeep. Routine painting as needed. Possible tuck pointing if needed. Freshening Up Morrissey Hall Lobby. Repairing and Seal Coating parking lot after Fall Fest. Thank You, Fr. Bob Pastor

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OUTREACH MINISTRY Part 2: Myths and Facts about Domestic Violence1

Myth: No one would beat his pregnant wife or girlfriend. Fact: Domestic violence may begin or escalate during pregnancy. Homicide is the single most frequent cause of maternal death during pregnancy and in the first year after giving birth. Myth: Children generally are neither aware of, nor affected by, their mothers’ abuse. Fact: Nearly 90% of children who live in homes in which there is domestic violence will see or hear the abuse. Children as young as toddlers can suffer from the effects of exposure to abuse. Children exposed to violence and other forms of trauma may have permanent alterations in brain structure, chemistry, and function. Myth: Domestic violence can occur in older women, but it is quite rare. Fact: Approximately half of all elder abuse in women is thought to be domestic violence “grown old.” Older battered women are less likely to seek and receive help. Myth: Since domestic violence is a problem in the relationship, marriage or couple-focused pastoral counseling is key to restoring tranquility in the family or relationship. Fact: This type of counseling often increases the risk of violence to the victim. Faith and religious community representatives can promote safety and restore personal integrity and self-esteem to the victim, and can suggest batterer intervention services for the abuser, but should not engage in couples counseling unless the long-term safety of the survivor, and of staff, can be assured. Myth: Services for victims are staffed by people angry at traditional society who want to break up the family unit. Fact: Programs that help battered women and their children, and counselors who provide assistance, are concerned first and foremost with the safety of the survivor and her dependent children. The goal of counseling and other survivor services is not to break up the family unit but to preserve the safety of all its members. Achieving this goal, unfortunately, may mean that some relationships may need to end. Myth: Since our religion doesn’t condone divorce, an abusive man should speak with the religious leader to mend his ways. Fact: Although some religions do frown on divorce, no religion advocates abuse. Some abusers misinterpret or intentionally misuse religious writings to justify violence against their partners and children or to prevent a marriage––even one wracked by violence and abuse–– from dissolving. Helpful conversations with a batterer, even if conducted carefully by a religious leader, may bring short-term relief, but cannot take the place of qualified batterer intervention services, and may even pose a safety risk for the victim and her children. 1Elaine J. CHRIST’S PRESENCE IN THE WORLD There’s a bit of a “missing link” in the first two sentences of today’s Gospel from Mark. In the first, the apostles return from having been sent out on mission two by two (“one who is sent” is the meaning of “apostle”). Their instructions were to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick in Jesus’ name. In the second sentence, Jesus tells them to come away with him and rest a while. It would be nice for us to imagine that, between those two sentences, a look of amazed gratitude and pleasure crossed the face of Jesus as he hears of the kingdom proclaimed in his name, and how they didn’t have to shake the dust off their feet anywhere. They deserved a rest! It might not be bad for us, when we gather together with Jesus as the apostles do today, to do this kind of debriefing, allowing the Lord to hear what we’ve sought to do in his name, our successes, our failures, our need to get away with him for a while to be fortified for further work in God’s name. For we, the baptized, are not only the flock of Jesus Christ; through water and the power of the Spirit we have also become the Body of Christ, the presence of the Shepherd for the life of the world.
