How Much Is Enough Yoga?by Amir

2

The reasons for beginning a yoga practice are many and varied, but most of us who stick with it are looking for

ways to feel better about ourselves, to be healthier, and to enjoy life more. Yoga advances this better state of

being through postures, breathing techniques and meditations which help remove the obstacles holding us

back from feeling better in body and mind, and to replace those obstacles with space for the positive to

come into our lives.

To answer the main question, how much is enough yoga, the answer really depends on the goals you wish to

achieve and how much time you want to invest in reaching those goals.  If your goals are to build strength

and flexibility, to clear tension from your muscles, and counteract the stresses of daily life, then perhaps a

weekly class or two with some home practice would be enough.

However, yoga teaches us that true happiness comes from inner change, not from outside circumstances.

Using the body as an initial tool, you can create changes in your state of mind and transform your whole sense

of self.  When this happens, it’s easier to react to external events in a more balanced way, and to take things

more in stride. Even better, you are able to see your life more clearly, and make decisions accordingly. So if

personal transformation is what you’re after, the more yoga the better.

I suggest a practice that takes yoga into your daily life. This is easier said than done since we all have jobs,

families, homes, and other time- and energy-consuming responsibilities. But remember that making time to

practice results in better quality time for the rest of life’s obligations. More importantly, stopping to practice

doesn’t have to mean always setting aside 90 or more minutes to practice every day. Even a few minutes is

good – a few stretches here and a few breaths there can make a huge difference. Find moments to stand

in tadasana (mountain pose) when you are waiting in a line. Pause at your desk to take a simple seated twist.

Take in a deep clearing breath before you take in a meal.  When I play ice hockey, we have two-minute

breaks between each period to give our team a chance to re-

group, re-energize and re-center. These breaks are important

and can mean the difference between a satisfying or a

frustrating game. This is how to integrate yoga into daily life. This

is how to live well.

If attending yoga class only once a week is all your schedule

allows, it doesn’t mean you can’t “do” more yoga. It’s true that

the more you do, the better you feel – flexibility, strength, and

positive state of mind will increase along with the amount of

practice you do – but with creativity and determination, you

can be doing the work of connecting mind, body, and breath

all the time. And that would be enough.

In Praise of Half-Moon - Ardha Chandrasanaby Lory Manning

For a long time, I called my version of it Dark-of-the-Moon pose; forward leg with bent knee, back leg toes to

floor, torso stretching forward, forward hand with block reaching toward the floor, forward knee moving

toward straight, back leg starting to lift, then forward foot splaying wide, balance departing, back foot

returning to floor. Try, try, retry. So many classmates in full flight, soaring fully extended into the pose while I

remained staunchly earthbound. I wanted to get into that pose with all my heart and thus began my affair

with ardha chandrasana.

And now at eleven years and counting, here’s the state of things. What was Dark-of-the Moon pose, is now

Quarter-Moon pose. My front knee straightens all the way, my back leg lifts high, straight, parallel to the floor,

its foot flexed, my forward hand on the block, block on floor, grounded foot pointed straight ahead and

steady—well, at least, on good days. But my head, shoulders, torso and lifted leg remain on the horizontal

plane. On the best of days, I can turn a bit—a little bit—moving my torso and lifted leg a couple of inches or

so toward the front wall without falling out of the pose—but push for even an inch more and down I come,

unbalanced, foiled again.

Or I can use a prop—the wall—which grounds my flexed upper foot and allows the rest of me to wax closer to

an ideal pose. And sometimes I can move that foot off the wall and sail, briefly, a joyful, acrobatic bird until

balance, that tricksy enforcer of Newton’s laws, brings on the waning of my half moon.

For me, Half-Moon is more path than pose. Traveling that path means keeping company with imperfection,

focusing on aspiration through encircling doubt, spinning the impossible into the possible all the while keeping

balanced and content with whatever

phase of the moon shows up that day.

Of all the yoga poses I’ve contended

with, Half Moon is the one I most want to

master. Some asanas — head stand, for

instance — will have to wait for another

life time. But, ah, for Half Moon, I have

high hopes — maybe next year, maybe

next week, maybe next class.

Lory Manning is a proud graduate of Sun & Moon’s In-Depth 200-Hour Foundations program, and is now a certified yoga instructor. If you have questions about the program, contact Alex Levin, Director of Teacher Training & Advanced Studies at [email protected]. Teacher Spotlight: Freedom Style Yogaby Anne Jablonski

When people used to ask me what style I practice or teach, I never had a compact answer that didn't trigger more questions. Now?  I mooch the description used by Erich Schiffmann,

the teacher who so radically influenced my practice. Erich teaches the wisdom of using

technique as a stepping-stone to a deeply intuitive and intelligent listening that informs each

moment on the mat. He calls it ‘Freedom Style Yoga.’

“Instead of deciding in advance what it is you think you’re supposed to do,” says Erich, “you

start transcending everything you’ve learned and intuitively start letting the alignment come

through.” Here's how it seems to go, although putting words around it necessarily diminishes it.

First, it sets your yoga asana practice free. Informed by the template of information and

intelligent alignment, you begin to get more playful and free with the poses, diving into all the

options and openings they offer.

Then? Once you get the hang of skillful internal listening with the poses, it begins to register

that the same source of intuition guiding where to put your hand in Ardha Chandrasana just

might be trustworthy enough to steer more elements of your life, moment to moment, off the mat.

Meditation is the absolutely essential ingredient.  It holds your hand across the bridge between

the familiar banks of mechanical practice to the liberating banks of intuitive yoga practice

and intuitive living.

Intuitive living, theoretically, sounds like a liberating bed of roses, but in practice, making your

way across that bridge can be mighty scary. It demands a leap of faith as you risk letting go of

deeply engrained habits and everything you think you know. It takes patience to lean into the

unknown, much less to trust it.

So you start where it’s easy. You test it out in circumstances where the stakes aren't too high.

Over and over, you inquire. You listen for and act on guidance on the mat. Then you listen for

and act on guidance on what hat to wear or whether to paint the walls aqua or yellow.

Eventually, you listen for and give expression to guidance on more consequential decisions.

It can feel, at first, as if you're surrendering your personal authority, like you’re submitting to

being led around by the nose. The nerve! And, in one sense, you are. You're abandoning the

limited definition of who you thought you were in favor of an unlimited, expansive Knowing of

who you actually are.  Your limited definition of who you are (“my will”) morphs into a limitless,

truer definition of who you are (“Thy will.”)

Page 5: Sun & Moon Yoga Studio 2013 Winter Newsletter.

5

A meaningful yoga practice demands only our gentle inquiry. What I want for myself and for my students is to keep the practice fresh and compelling through moment-to-moment

curiosity. What now? What now? To know whether “Thy” will is trustworthy requires only

this. What now? There’s nothing scary about that.

I'm still stumbling my way through all this. Like I said, it takes patience. What I'm

experiencing more and more is that

there’s no way I can figure this out

alone. And that I'll never figure it out

if I don't partner with brothers and

sisters to cultivate our shared

willingness to see the deepest truth about how we are collectively

sourced. We need each other to do

this thing.

That's why I love teaching.  It’s why I

love yoga classes. And it’s why I

love our community. We team up.

We get curious together with a

shared commitment to set one

another free.

Class Descriptions

Level 1: A basic introduction to yoga breathing, postures, and relaxation. Intended for beginners with no previous experience, or those looking for a gentle and basic ongoing practice.

Level 2: Refines the basics and provides more detailed alignment instructions and breath work.

Level 3*: Teaches more advanced standing and seated poses, pranayama, and begins integrating inversions, deeper backbends, and meditation techniques.

Level 4*: Intensifies an already-strong asana practice by developing a deeper internal and energetic understanding of yoga. Inversions, arm balances, wheel and lotus poses are included, as well as advanced pranayama and meditation.

All Levels:  Includes the basics as well as options for deeper practice. Appropriate for all but brand new beginners.

Combination Classes (i.e. Level 1/2):  For those comfortable in the lower level, and interested in exploring the next.

Adaptive Yoga: Slow-paced practice combining breath, deep relaxation, and gentle movement to restore strength, range of motion and vitality. Modified for individual needs. Ideal for students with health concerns.

Advanced Practice: Deep investigation of one topic each week that we would not take the time to incorporate in a regular-level class. Topics include anatomy, technique, energy, and traditional yoga wisdom. In-Depth studies requirement; open to all intermediate and advanced yogis. Senior faculty rotates each week.

Feldenkrais: Awareness Through Movement technique reveals and alters behaviors responsible for chronic stress, tension, and pain; facilitates recovery from injury and improves creativity and skills. The focus is not on what you do but on how.

Gentle Yoga:  See “Adaptive” Yoga description.

Kids: Play and work with poses to increase flexibility and strength, develop coordination and posture, and explore relaxation and stress reduction tools. Yoga stories and/or visualizations will be presented in each class. For elementary ages.

Mat Pilates 1: This exercise system focuses on correct breathing, posture, and core strengthening.

Mat Pilates 2: The progression in this class is faster than Pilates 1 and provides an energetic, full body workout. Prior Pilates experience necessary.

Meditation:  Learn to cultivate a deeply satisfying inner quiet and mindfulness. Includes short dharma talks and various meditation tools and practices. Open to beginners and advanced students alike. No registration necessary.

Middle and High Schoolers: A playful yet disciplined practice of asana, prana-yama, and relaxation, intended to help reduce stress and promote strength, self-esteem, focus, balance, and positive body images.

Moms & Babies:  Bring along your baby, from infant to almost crawling, for this welcoming postnatal class that emphasizes how yoga can help you stay physically and emotionally strong and centered during baby’s first months.

Pre-K Yoga Fun: 30-minute class filled with breath, movement, stories, music and games for kids ages 3-5. Each class ends with relaxation. Yoga helps pre-schoolers increase flexibility, strength, coordination and posture.

Prenatal Yoga: An all-levels course to support and empower expectant mothers. Learn ways to ease aches and pains, make the body comfortable during pregnancy, and use the breath to calm and steady the mind.

Restorative Yoga: Relax in yoga postures where the body is entirely supported by blankets, blocks, and other props. An ideal way to end the work-week and renew the nervous system.

Toddlers Together: A fun romp for caregivers and toddlers. We will incorporate asana, stories, music, and creative movement to experience the joy and heartfelt wisdom of yoga with a child-like flow. 16 mos – 4 yrs, adult/child.

Vinyasa 1**: A fast-paced, challenging practice that builds stamina and strength through a series of flowing poses. Students should be comfortable coming quickly into standing poses with good alignment and should be practicing at Level 2 or above. Appropriate for beginning Ashtanga-style and power yoga practitioners.

Vinyasa 2**: Adds more advanced poses and challenging transitions to the fast, flowing pace of Vinyasa 1. Open to Level 3+ students or those comfortable with Vinyasa 1 and ready to expand. Appropriate for experienced Ashtanga-style and power yoga practitioners.

Yoga for the 12 Steps: Traditional 12 Step programs offer a remedy for a wide range of dependencies, but they do not address the physical dimension. In this class we practice movement, breathing, and conscious relaxation to develop awareness of and balance between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Both yoga and 12 Step philosophies are woven to provide a framework for authentic living and personal growth. This is not a meeting. It’s a weekly space for anyone seeking a retreat from the challenges of life.

* Classes at Level 3 and above involve more difficult levels of practice; teachers may invite students to join a lower level class when appropriate.

**Vinyasa classes are not recommendeduntil a student has completed at least two quarters of Level 2.

General Information and Fees

REGISTRATION INFORMATIONSun & Moon classes are offered weekly on a quarterly basis. We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We recommend that students register for the full quarter, although we do allow students to attend with partial registration and/or on a drop-in basis. Please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the quarter as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the quarter late, partial registration is available at a discount, provided that you sign up for six or more classes. Local students who have never been to Sun & Moon before, and are considering registering for classes, may take their first class free to determine if Sun & Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks, or cash. A $35 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon.REGISTER EARLYRegistration is on a first-come, first-served basis. You have the option to register online, or by mail, fax, or phone. Please note, we will contact you only if the class you have chosen is full.SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INSA “drop-in” class is one you are not registered for. The rate for the drop-in class is dependent on whether you are currently registered for the quarter. We offer our students who are registered in the current quarter the discounted registration rate for an additional drop-in class. Students who are not registered in the current quarter pay the full drop-in fee. Note that though we always welcome drop-ins, occasionally space will not be available in a fully-subscribed class.FEES75- and 90-minute classes: $15/class for minimum of 6 per quarter $20/class to drop-in45- and 60-minute classes: $13/class for minimum of 6 per quarter $15/class to drop-in

MAKE-UPSWe invite you to make up a missed class in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. You may also make up classes in advance of a future absence within the current quarter. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the quarter. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled.REFUND AND CREDIT POLICYKeeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes.Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $40 for classes, $5 for workshops. Refunds are given by check and may take up to six weeks to process. A Letter of Credit is valid for one year from the date issued, and incurs no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise.Letters of Credit for workshops are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop.WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATIONComfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights, or leggings with a t-shirt or tank top. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry, please. For your safety, please leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.
