Shining Bright for Twenty Years

We are connection. We are community. We are grateful.

We have stories. Here’s a few.

Yoga has changed a lot since the early 90’s, when you could count on one hand the number of yoga studios in the DC metro area. Many (repeat, many) studios have come since then, and a quite a few have come and gone, but the ones who were

there to begin with are here now, and we’re proud to be among them. The credit goes not to any one personality, or any one teacher. We intend this celebration to be about the people who show up for practice week after week, year after year. The people who open themselves up to us, mind, body, and soul, and allow us to share yoga as the magnificent healing tool that it is.

The Universe Knows Best. Many times I've gone to yoga class with a certain intention, only to discover that the universe knew better what I needed on that particular day, and the teacher seems to highlight in class an issue I've been struggling with. The most

dramatic experience I had with this was during one of Roger Panetta's classes. I had just returned from ten days of hiking in Western Canada with my family. My heart, mind and soul were still back in Canada, and I was resisting the back to school "rush" of late summer. I was inundated with emails, meetings, and preparations for the new school year, and only wanted to be back in nature with my family. So I went to yoga

class to relax, to find the peace I felt when I was hiking in the mountains, and to escape the inevitable change that was right around the corner. Roger had different plans for us. The class moved at a faster pace than usual. We were moving quickly from seated to standing poses, and the minute I got comfortable in a pose, and began relaxing into it, Roger would have us transitioning quickly into another pose. I

started to feel resistance, I started to feel anger. I wanted to stop, to relax into my pose, and to stay in that relaxed, good-feeling place. At the end of class Roger

explained that the class was about transition – how we feel about it, and how we cope with

change. I learned so much that evening, and still remember it during times of inevitable change.

~ Rebecca Metro

On Being a Teacher. One rainy night at Sun & Moon after I finished teaching I sat alone in the quiet studio. In that moment of solitude, unencumbered by anything and with my mind free of distractions, I understood. I understood that I was teaching the

lessons of my teachers, who were teaching the lessons of their teachers who were teaching the lessons of teachers going back thousands of years. Going forward I would teach future teachers who would teach future teachers. The lineage of yoga teachers would continue long after I ceased to be of this earth. At that moment I understood the privilege, the honor and the responsibility of something so much

greater than myself. Then like all moments, the moment passed. ~ Roger Panetta

A Tiny Little Hand. Ten years ago, when my family was living around the corner from Sun & Moon in Fairfax, I took classes and also brought my children for parent/child yoga. We would walk to the studio, and all three of them loved learning the

different poses, and practicing them at home. At the time, I was also running in

I started taking Yoga with JJ Gormley at the first Sun & Moon studio around the corner on Pollard Street, just after it opened! Years later when the Fairfax Studio was getting ready to open, Justina Brewer asked for my help in painting the walls

with some appropriate images for the studio. She had already selected my painting of a sun and a moon for the wall behind the front desk, and we had been chatting at length for some mural ideas for the hall walls, but kept coming up empty.  Meanwhile I had been taking one of her classes, struggling with this stuff called meditation. One day In savasana, I arrived totally in “that place” – at

peace, conscious, but not thinking. After class Justina came up to me and said, “you have the mural designs, don't you?” Just then I realized, yes I did!  I asked how she knew. She said she watched me meditate in savasana, and when I “let it all go,” everything I needed came to me. ~ Donya Bauer

Donya’s meditation-inspired lotus image graces our Fairfax Studio wall.

&More stories.

distance races, the army ten miler, the cherry blossom 10K, etc., and I had begun to explore trail running due to the beating my knees were taking from the road racing. Yoga was very helpful in maintaining my flexibility, but also in helping to maintain the inner peace necessary in raising young children.  My youngest son was four at the time, and I was finishing

my yoga practice on our living room floor in savasana, when he quietly lay down next to me, and put his tiny little hand in mine. It was a beautifully silent, peaceful moment, and he couldn't have said I love you any louder than that gentle hand in mine. I remembered that moment the next week during a half marathon trail run. The hills and terrain were wearing me down, but this memory lifted me up in a way that has stayed with me forever.  Julian is 14 now, but to this day, when I am struggling with physical or emotional hardships, I remember that singular, precious moment, and how his quiet, gentle

support offered me the crystalline clarity of what is important in my life. A gift I will have forever in my heart and mind. Thank you for being there for me and my family, and contributing to the gifts in my life. ~ Caroline Hockenberry

Work for Yoga?

We have work trade positions open

in both studios. Inquire at the front

desk if you’d like to be part of a

connected team of committed

yogis who support the studio with

time and presence, as the studio

supports them in their practice.

Keep the Stories Coming!

We’ll be sharing lots of stories all year long as part of our 20th anniversary celebration. If you have a yoga moment that lives in your memory as

sweet, moving, or transformational, and if Sun & Moon was part of that moment, we’d love hear from you. Would you, could you, share with us, in written form (100 words or less); video form (from your own camera or

ours – two minutes or less)? Send your story or your questions about it to [email protected]
