Often during yoga practice, I experience a particular mental state I can best describe as a mixture of calmness, clarity, and compassion. When I get to this state, I sometimes wonder, atmy core, is this who I am? Or am I the person going through the whole range of emotion therest of the day? Yoga at its core is simply the science of self-inquiry.

Most of us are at a loss when we ponder the question “who am I” since it’s difficult for the mindto grasp what this “thing” is called “I”. It’s much easier to relate to the more established publicconcept we have of who we are: I’m from here or I do this, and so on. This self-concept is usuallysettled upon as a reasonable definition of who we are, and most of us accept this for most ofour lives.

Many of us, when we first consider who we really are, immediately have the idea that we maybe our bodies. Once we get past believing that, perhaps we imagine that "I" am the thoughts

and feelings in my mind. But consider that the core of every thought andfeeling is connected to some object in the outside world. Our minds

are geared to relate to things which have some external or worldlyrelationship. Also consider that the mind can be “managed” by

its owner. Whose mind is it after all? It is your mind, just like yourbody, and your senses, and just as you can tell your body what

to do and what not, you can also tell your mind what to do,and what not to. The question is, who is doing the telling? On some reflection, it becomes apparent that the body isjust a container moving us around. The body is the car, mymind is the driver, but “I” am the passenger.

For the practice of self-inquiry to work its magic, you haveto recognize at some level that the word “I”, though super-ficially referring to the body and mind, is actually some-thing much deeper. This is not an easy task, and this “deep-er I” may be something beyond the ability of our humanminds to truly comprehend. Perhaps we need to take adeep breath and stop trying so hard. Maybe we can catcha glimpse of that state of calmness and ease — a peacefulenergy inside that we all share — and then the true self isrevealed.

The Yoga of Self-Imageby Alex Levin

Some of our self-defined identities are accurate, others not as much. Some are conscious, oth-ers evade our awareness. Just about all ofthem are temporary. Despite some inkling ofthis impermanence, we often struggle to pre-serve and defend our professional, personal, and physical self-images, only to the depletionof our energy and/or sanity. We pour preciousresources into hopeful achievements and sta-tuses. We limit our potential and our joy by ourrestrictive self-definitions.

We committed yogis return to our classes ormats as surely as spring follows winter, as surelyas the migrating birds reach their destinations. We return for many benefits–flexibility, stress-reduction, challenge, community. One of themain perks is freedom. On our mats our teach-ers encourage us to be aware of what we arefeeling, to listen to our bodies, to respect our-selves as we are now. This is one of the fewvenues where we are reminded to let go ofexpectations and judgments and to noticewho we are in THIS moment. We are free to beourselves just as our molecules are arrangingthemselves, just as the electronic impulses arejumping across synapses in the ever recurringnow.

Yoga teaches that everything we experienceis in a state of flux between activity, dullness or clarity. Like the parade of our personas, the

postures and breathing we practice are arepertoire of variety and each form changesfrom day to day within an individual body. The mind’s chatter can also be active, dull orclear. But on the safe laboratory of the yogamat, we get to practice connecting to theunchanging essence of ourselves within formsthat change. That self is often described ascalm, relaxed, peaceful, spacious. We bow tothat essence when we say “namaste” to eachother; to that which we all share, to that whichwe all are.

True security and freedom come from knowingthis steady Self. While it is already who we are,we have become estranged and so it feels likewe need to get reacquainted. We can do thisgradually and without giving up any of ourfavorite roles or poses. As we feel the shape of a posture, see the kaleidoscope of ourthoughts, remember the present moment onthe touch of the breath, we are also practic-ing the awareness of the enduring Self. At first just quick sweet glimpses of wonder and enjoyment. In time, we are graced with longergazes. We realize that we can be in a formand feel our formlessness; that we can havefun with our temporary identities, but releasethe vise grip attachment to them. We grow totrust in the certainty of our infinite Self, just aswe can know the essence of the spring flowersis present year round.

How we define ourselves profoundly affects how we experience our lives. “Who am I?” isdefined along many dimensions: woman, gardener, economist, teacher, cat-lover, success, failure, gregarious, introverted, tall, short, patient, irritable. Playing different roles and relatingto the world in various ways is creative expression and the spice of life.

Uttanasana for Back Healthby Allegra Gulino

Is it a remnant of frustrations from PEclass, an idea left over from our runningdays, or the allure of perfect photos ofstraight-legged yogis in forward folds thatmakes our poor hamstrings the objects ofdissatisfaction?

One of the most common low backinjuries occurs when a person bends over, rounding their low back with straight legsto pick up something. Not only do we not“lift with our legs,” which would apply ourcore strength, but we make the vulnera-ble low back a fulcrum for the weight load.

The low back is part of the spinal column andalthough there is some movement in the vertebrae, it is by nature a column, not a hinge joint. The fulcrumfor hinging over in forward folds should be the hips.Hamstrings are important, but spinal health is the keyto healthier breathing, digestion, nervous system, strength, balance and energy. Injuries, unhealthyhabits and poor postural alignment can affect thewhole body, and we are rife with unhealthy habitsand injuries.

Therefore, let’s approach uttanasana not as a race to acquire straight legs, but as a healing stretch for theentire back body. Stand in tadasana (mountain pose)for a few breaths. Make sure your feet are paralleland hip-width apart, your knees are slightly soft andpelvis is in a neutral position with the pubic bone andtail bone evenly pointing down. Look down at yourfeet and spread out your toes, press them down andthen lift the arches of your feet up, pulling energy fromthe earth up into the legs.

Keeping this enlivening of the feet, placeyour hands on your hips, take in a deepbreath and on the exhale pull in the bellymuscles and hold them there as you contin-ue to breathe. This drawing in of the bellyprotects your low back. To continue, bendyour knees, keeping them parallel to eachother and begin to sit back maintaining atall spine. Keep the belly active as youdeepen the hinge at your hips and bendyour knees until your torso is lying on yourthighs, keeping your back long and pro-tected. Rest there, allowing your head and

arms to hang down with a deep crease at your hips.

Now you can focus on the hamstrings. While keepingthe full contact of torso to legs, slowly explorestraightening the legs more. Undulate the pose withyour breath, inhaling to lengthen the spine by liftingyour chest away from the thighs, and exhaling to foldmore deeply over the thighs, as the legs straightenand the seat lifts. To come up, place your hands onthe hips, slide the shoulder blades towards eachother and away from your ears, so your chest beginsto peel off the legs, then keeping your back long, inhale and come up from the hips.

Practicing uttanasana this way not only protects thelow back but strengthens it by going up and downwith back flat, belly in and hips hinging. To deepenthe therapeutic benefits, you can slow down thehalfway point and stay there for a breath or two.Let’s do away with the delusion of straight legs at all costs and take care of ourselves. You’ll be gladyou did.

In my six years of teaching, I’m often asked the following question by students:“What can I do for my hamstrings?” The question is often posed by people who justexecuted perfectly acceptable standing poses and down dogs. This is a real head-scratcher to me. Didn’t they feel the hamstrings working in the poses? Why do theywish to improve what is already reasonably healthy? I wonder where this seeminglydisproportionate concentration upon hamstrings comes from.

Teacher Feature Meet Audra Monk

What was your first yoga experience? When my third child was about one and a half Ijoined a local gym. I had been very athletic in highschool and college, but being a full time mom tothree young children had taken up my days and I found myself overweight. I really enjoyed workingout. I liked all types of exercise, treadmills, weightsand cardio classes. One day I decided to try yoga.I really liked the class, and I remember wondering“is this exercise?” I wasn’t sure, but I knew that itsomehow just felt really good.

Why did you become a yoga teacher? One of the teachers at my gym was moving andthey were looking for a new teacher. I regularlyattended class 3 times a week and some of theother students encouraged me to teach the class. I started with some weekend teaching workshopsfor teaching yoga in gyms and in my quest formore knowledge became a student at Sun&Moon.

Can yoga help with weight loss?I can honestly answer this with a giant YES! Overthree years ago I lost 52 pounds(and have main-tained the loss) with yoga as a key component. Idid join Weight Watchers to help educate myselfbetter about food choices and for some account-ability, but yoga was always number one in myheart and my life. I really understood how it felt topractice and teach yoga with some extra weight. With the occasional modification, yoga is accessi-ble to people of all sizes and physical experience.Yoga alone will probably not lead to a great dealof weight loss, but it can help with a weight lossmind set. I had a teacher that once said the key to yoga for weight loss was “that with a yoga prac-tice we begin to feel better about our bodies andwe become more careful about what we put into

into them.” When asked, Iadvise people on a weightloss journey to add someyoga to their lives, to slowdown, to take all things inmoderation, to live andenjoy each day. A weight loss journey may be longand sometimes difficult, but yoga can enhanceand strengthen the spirit.

Do you need to be flexible to do yoga?Do you need to be strong to lift weights? No, welearn or practice something to become better at it.Yoga is a safe and careful way to add flexibility toour bodies and minds.

Do you have a favorite kind of yoga?Prepare for the longest rambling answer, myfriends. I adore all kinds of yoga. I am open to anykind of yoga. I like yoga where you move a lot andyoga where you almost don’t move at all. I like tomove from pose to pose with breaks and discus-sion, I like to flow from pose to pose with no stops. I like to read about yoga poses and philosophy. I like yoga outside, I like yoga with my kids, I like tojust sit and breathe yoga. I like to do just one poseand be done, I like to do yoga and watch TV. I liketo tell people about yoga. I like yoga early in themorning on the beach, I like yoga in a shady spotafter a nice run. I like yoga with popular music,“yoga” music, or no music at all. I like to take yoga from different teachers and from DVDs. I like “pretzel-y” yoga and relaxing yoga. I like yoga withgreen eggs and ham! Seriously though, I really dolike and enjoy all types and styles of yoga. I think itis important for us all as students of life to be openand accepting of many many different ideas andways to do things.
