Savasana (Corpse Pose) is the most important part of our yoga practice. This pose serves many purposes— physical, mental and emotional — and teachers often use it to start and end class. The pose looksdeceptively simple and many tend to consider it an easy pose. But what, at first, looks simple and easy, eventually turns out to be somewhat difficult.

The goal of Savasana is to relax the body and mind to make them both tranquil and calm. Not onlyshould your body be relaxed and motionless, but even your mind should be calm, like the surface of a still pond. The result is a deep and profound relaxation that carries into our daily life activities andcircumstances.

Most yoga classes follow a similar pattern: (1) They begin with a short opening period of centering andturning inwards away from the mundane world and setting an intention for the practice. (2) Followingthat comes the asana practice itself. (3) At the end comes an integration phase where the effects of theyoga practice are allowed to absorb and penetrate deep into the self — Savasana is the primary vehicleof that process.

After a balanced asana practice, our bodies will have been stretched, contracted, twisted and folded.Following the exertion of the practice, Savasana allows our body and mind a chance to regroup and

retune. An intelligent yoga practice will teach the nervous system a host of newneuromuscular movements — meaning that even the deepest muscles have theopportunity to let go and shed their habitual patterns of movement. Savasana

gives the nervous system a chance to integrate this new information in a briefpause before we’re thrust back into the usual stresses of daily life.

Judith Lasater wrote the following practical advice:

“…Savasana teaches much more than relaxation. It teaches clearlyand concretely the importance of being, not just doing. Our culture is

very much a “doing” culture; we value action and results over beingand awareness. Savasana may be the only time during the weekthat the student is quiet and present, not acting, not achieving, not sleeping, just being present.”

Savasana is a very challenging pose — it has the potential to takeus to the limits of our mindfulness. It is as easy to think of it asunnecessary and to avoid it as it is to allow it to become nothingmore than taking a nap. It demands both diligence and finesse.Too long and our minds become dull and we fall asleep. Too littletime, or time spent wrestling with thoughts, and it’s ineffective.

Remember that everything has a beginning, a middle, and anend. If you ever have to leave class early, make sure you reserveat least five minutes to take Savasana before you leave in order to soak in the benefits of the practice. Even if you forgot to notifyyour teacher, by taking Savasana, you send a clear and certainsignal that your intention is to end your practice with the finishingtouch it deserves.

Inner Treasure: Taking Your Yoga Deepby Alex Levin

When the mind has settled, we are established in our essential nature, which isunbounded consciousness. —Yoga Sutras I:3Yoga awakens our desire to experience the truth of who we are. People often report that yoga givesthem a sense of having arrived “home” or of beingmore at home in themselves. It happens on manylevels. We move a new way, or in a way that wehaven’t moved in a long time, and the physicalrelaxation is a welcome ease. We direct ourattention to movement with breath and feel subtleenergies we didn’t realize existed, as if discoveringsecret chambers in our own house. We feel as ifthere’s more room in our minds as well as our bodies. It’s like a small aperture allows in just enough light for us to recognize that we have a treasure hiddenwithin us. The opening is a taste of freedom, of ouressential nature. Once we’ve had this taste, wecannot forget it.

However, for most of us this feeling, this knowing, seems to repeatedly slip away. We get back to ourjobs, our families, our routines and the contrast canbe unsettling. At first, equanimity is not available atthe snap of a finger, and we may encounterchallenge every step of the way outside the yogastudio. Desperate for our next fix of bliss, we mightfeel like a junkie counting the hours until our nextyoga class. The analogy ends here because unlike a havoc-wreaking addiction, the elixir of yoga is nota temporary high or numbing out, but a step-by-steppractical path toward realizing our full potential. The commitment to yoga class and perhaps ourown home practice is not a way of escaping life’sdemands, but of cultivating, indeed becoming, the presence that allows us to engage more fully in every moment of our existence.

To help keep our focus, we can remember that yogisthrough the ages have paved the way for us, thatwe are not alone on our path. We can reach out forsupport. As Sun & Moon teachers, staff and students,we are all part of the sangha, the communitydedicated to learning, living and sharing this yogicpath. Wherever you are on the continuum of your

yoga passion—whether burning with motivation orknowing yoga “works” but lately feeling uninspired—this season you can let Sun & Moon support yourcommitment to growth and transformation, whetherthat is by making sure you get to your weekly classeven as other demands and opportunities tug atyour time, or by considering one of our structuredprograms to guide your inquiry.

Participating in Summer Bliss 2010 will refresh yourresolve during the eight weeks of July and August. You’ll release tension with three classes a week ateither studio and four individual healing sessions. It’s much like going on yoga retreat without leavinghome, and according to last year’s participants, reveals yoga’s power in our daily lives in a new light.

Or, if your desire is to know more about how yogaworks, for example how poses, chakras andchanting relate to each other, how to know which to do when, or how The Yoga Sutras inform ourpractice or our lives, you may be interested inpursuing Sun & Moon’s Yoga In-Depth AdvancedStudies and Teacher Training. Beginning inSeptember, this course will explore yoga techniquesand lifestyle as they are grounded in historic andcontemporary wisdom and science. You’ll find moredetails for these programs online and in fliers at thestudios.

However we decide to remember our inner treasure, our relaxed presence, with continued practice weincreasingly witness how yoga’s curriculum meets us where we are, just as we are, to loosen whateverrestricts us. We identify more and more with the feelof our awareness, of unbounded consciousness. We see that the flow of our being emerges from thisstillness and spaciousness. We think, speak and actfrom authenticity, integrity and courage. Rather than a cafeteria of disappointing and inconvenientobligations that limit what we really want to bedoing, life begins to feel more like a banquet ofopportunity and limitless possibility.

Balancing Mudra Vinyasaby Suzanne Morgan

While yoga is a spiritual practice, it also offerspractical healing applications that benefit eventhose who aren’t spiritually oriented. Hasta mudraswork in a way that can be compared toacupuncture or reflexology. By activating parts of thehand, a hasta mudra opens up channels of energyand sends messages to the brain.

Try this balancing mudra series and see if it speaks toyou. If you are sensitive energetically, you mayreceive immediate results. But if the benefit doesn’tcome quickly, be patient and consistent in yourpractice.

BALANCING MUDRAMeaning/Benefit:This incorporates the gyan, shunya, prithivi, andbhudi mudras into a vinyasa — a flow of gesturesthat connects with the breath.

The gyan mudra represents home or roots andpromotes a calming and grounding effect. Thismudra can be used for cultivating simplicity in yourlife and for enhanced concentration.

The shunya mudra is called the Heaven mudra andcan help us when we no longer hear beautiful thingsor when we aren’t listening to others. The shunya

A hasta mudra is a gesture or positioning of the hands to channel and direct energyin the body. Mudras come from the over-three-thousand-year-old tradition of yogaoriginating in India. Hasta means “hand” in Sanskrit and “mudra” comes from theSanskrit word “mud”, meaning to delight. A mudra is a “seal” as in sealing yourconnection with the Divine and sealing the energy in the body. There are manyforms of mudras, such as with the eyes and the tongue. Mudras may alsoincorporate the whole body.

mudra promotes conscious listening and patience, allowing us to accept the present as it is now. Thismudra also helps with physical hearing problems.

The prithivi mudra will help you increase your energy. This gesture not only increases and nourishes physicalstrength, but also psychological strength.

The bhudi mudra allows us to speak the truth. This mudra will help you channel intuition andcommunication of your innermost thoughts. Itpromotes balance and fluidity — both on a physicallevel (relieving dry mouth or eyes) and on anemotional level.

The photos show the sequence of movement, fromleft to right. Repeat this sequence for five minutes orso. Or you can extend the length of time, making thisa beautiful meditation practice. The primary benefit ofthis mudra sequence is to calm the mind. In addition, one of my students has reported great success usingthis sequence in helping her go to sleep at night.

This lovely vinyasa can be done anywhere — whilewaiting in line, walking or sitting. It also helps to set a

positive intention as you form a mudra andconcentrate on this intention during the practice. Tomake this vinyasa more effective, concentrate on thefollowing words as you touch each respective finger:1) index finger – calm energy; 2) middle finger:patience; 3) ring finger: confidence; and 4) pinky:intuition.

How to form the mudras and integrate the breath: It also helps to set a positive intention as you form amudra and concentrate on this intention during thepractice.

1. Touch the tip of the index finger to the tip of thethumb. Inhale deeply and slowly.

2. Touch the tip of the middle finger to the tip of thethumb. Exhale slowly and completely.

3. Touch the tip of the ring finger to the tip of thethumb. Inhale deeply and slowly.

4. Touch the tip of the pinky finger to the thumb.Exhale slowly and completely.

Teacher Feature Meet Charlotte Raich

What inspired you to practice yoga?I have always been interested in breath, movement and how the body works. In mychildhood and teens I was a dancer. I practicedballet, tap and jazz. I loved the movement andexpression, but it took a physical and mental toll onmy body. It was all about having the perfect form. That really puts the pressure on. When I startedpracticing yoga, I realized that form is not asimportant. I learned to accept my body just as it ison any given day. This concept was enlightening. Itinspired me to continue on with my practice ofyoga. I pass this message along to my students aswell.

What people have influenced you along your yogajourney and where did you get your training?I have always been interested in the teachings andpractice of Dharma Mittra and Yogi Bhajan. Thisinspired me to do my first Yoga Alliance teachertraining with Darshan Kaur Khalsa in Kundalini Yogain Herndon. A year later I did my second yogaalliance certification in Hatha Yoga with Susan VanNuys and Doug Keller. I have also done the RadiantChild teacher training for children. I have a B.S. inExercise Science and Health Promotion. Currently Iam getting my master’s degree at MarymountUniversity in Health Promotion Management. Oneof the many things that my training brought me is afascination with yoga philosophy. The ancientwritten pieces and the Yoga Sutras changed myattitude and outlook on life. It “rocked my world”

for the better. Since then, I have been on a newpath of knowledge, acceptance andunderstanding. I have found that when I amdoubtful or troubled about most things in life, I canfind the answers that I seek in these ancientteachings of yoga. It has been an amazing journeyso far… this thing called life.

What style of yoga do you teach?I do believe that there is a little piece of all of myteachers in my style. Then, my own personalelement gets added. I don’t really label my style ofteaching in any way. If I had to choose I would saythat it is a “little of everything” (hatha) withpranayama, vinyasa and meditation mixed in. Mypersonal practice includes all types of yoga. I don’tlimit myself to one thing. I go out and see what isout there and what is being offered at all studios, and give it a try. You name it, I’ll try it.

What do you like to do in your free time?I really love to ride my bike. There is something sofreeing about it. I just get out there and go as fastand as far as I can. It is great to live in Arlingtonwith all of the trails around here. I also enjoy goingout to meals. Just when I think that I have triedeverything in Arlington, another restaurant pops upthat gets added to my list. My favorite thing to do isjust relax with my kids. This is especially good whenthere is no soccer practice, homework or otherobligations. It is great when we have time togetherto just be. That is my favorite thing to do, just be.
