Our ability to think is an essential human trait — we all need to communicate, plan, and make decisions. The problem is not that we think, but that we think all the time and we rarely think anything new. It’s as ifwe have an endless recording of the same thoughts over and over — a recording of endless chatter thatwe can’t turn off.

Rather than being relaxed, our minds get stuck in the mode of constantly “working” through thoughtsand creating stress. Over-thinking brings about fear, anger, frustration and insomnia.

Mindful breathing helps our thinking slow down and gives the mind a vacation from the endless chatter. When our thinking slows, we free ourselves from worries about uncertainties in the future and being

bound by regrets of the past. If we train our mind to simply say “I am breathingin” and “I am breathing out,” the words simply remind us of our observation of

our breath, and our mind takes a vacation from the work of having to thinkthrough thoughts.

When you put mindful breathing into practice, you will undoubtedlyfind your mind will return to thinking. It is unlikely that your mind will

stay on your breath very long without wandering away. When thishappens, just make a light mental note that you are “thinking” andreturn to your breath. It’s tempting to try to resolve issues or “finishstories.” Again, this is just more distraction - simply focus on yourbreath again.

There is wisdom in letting go of whatever thoughts are seducingyour mind and knowing that you can access a deeper peace andhappiness simply by being mindful. The genius of mindful breathingis that it’s a simple study of the inner workings of the mind. We seehow easy it is to judge ourselves even when doing something asbasic as observing our breath. But to step out of the judge’s cham-bers, to step out of the courtroom altogether, is to find fresh air, lotsof space, and a refreshingly quiet, nurturing, and welcomingexpanse of freedom.

Waking into Wisdom...and Actionby Alex Levin

In other words, imagine the metaphor of cozyhibernation as deep rest and regeneration as aproduct that becomes the fertile ground for action. After the deep rest, the hungry animal is ready forthe hunt as the thawing earth comes to life. Its rested and relaxed state facilitates skillful action. So, continue to imagine that this kind of rested andrelaxed state is not just something we can achieveonce in a while under the right conditions, but thecentering moment for every movement, everythought, every decision. You are already practic-ing it.

In the comfortable, familiar yoga setting, guidedby the teacher you enjoy, and in not having tothink too much, you are gradually becoming theembodiment of peace. You are learning to bethat, and to simultaneously focus your attention ona specific instruction. Sometimes your yoga puzzleis unfamiliar, difficult, and even unpleasant. But youtrust your teacher, and having come to know theunderlying calm center of yourself, you becomeincreasingly skilled at observing, and honoring, yourown particular experience. And in that more thor-ough awareness, you maneuver with your bodyand breath—instead of against them.

This skillful process can become the new paradigmfor meeting everything life brings you. Achievingthis clarity does not imply that life gets simpler orthat your problems magically melt away. It is theapproach that changes, and that changes every-thing. In fact, as your yoga practice keeps youcentered and improves your perception, you will

likely experience conflict and pain that you haveavoided or denied up to this point. In “TheUntethered Soul,” Michael Singer writes of thisprocess:

This journey is one of passing through exactly where you have been struggling not to go. As you pass through that state ofturmoil, the consciousness itself if your onlyrepose. You will just be aware that tremen-dous changes are taking place.

All your challenges are perfect opportunities toreplace “fight or flight” with the restored andrelaxed attitude. It will not be easy because we are so well schooled in the method of struggle. Butthe effort is simply your willingness to shift to “therepose of consciousness” for an instant. In thatshift, your situation will be illuminated—accuratelyassessed. The right tools and level of exertion willbe obvious, unconfused by emotions, memories or anxieties that are not actually present. For exam-ple, you’ll know if fast and firm action is needed, or if patient waiting is wisest just now. You’ll be mosteffective, appropriate and energy efficient.

And so, let yourself be addicted to the sweet blissyoga classes induce. Use it to master the shift tosteadiness and ease, as often as possible. Let theconscious compassion you find be the way yourawareness looks out at the world. More and more,well-being will be your natural state, rather thanonly an occasional treat.

Our society carries a deep-rooted belief that many aspects of our lives are burdensto be overcome, and that suffering through work is the mandatory path to happi-ness, health and other rewards. It is no surprise that in response our culture hasarrived at the point of considerable respect, and craving, for the feeling of well-being—energy flowing freely. We are seekers of stress-relief. Could it be, however, that the conflict-free state we discover in yoga need not be just pleasant respite, but the state we live from to peacefully and productively travel our individual andcollective paths?

Triangle Talkby Allegra Gulino

Observing the ego’s roller coaster of inflation anddefeat during the flowing dichotomy of easy anddifficult poses always shows its destructive nature.Who wants to ricochet between pride and shameall the time? Detaching ourselves from our egos, shows how absurd, competitive, and ultimately dis-tracting the voices are. We realize how muchmore kind, honest and attentive we can be whenwe are not on the ego ride. Each step motivatesus by increasing our capacity for true perceptionin yoga class but also throughout our lives.

Now, grab your blocks, step your feet a leg’slength apart and parallel. Put blocks behind yourheels. Your legs are straight, but your knees are notlocked. Turn your left foot 90 degrees and yourright foot 45 degrees or half way towards the front.A frequent mistake is leaving the back foot at 90degrees. The back leg is key to the stability of thepose. Spread your toes out and press them downwhile rooting your heels into the ground. Let thatstability grow up the legs by squeezing your feettowards the center line of your body and the legmuscles in towards the bones.

Use an inhale to lengthen your spine upward andraise your arms out to the sides at shoulder height.Face your palms towards the floor and draw your

shoulder blades slightly in towards each other anddown your back. This will cause your chest to lift.Exhale and draw in your belly.

Inhale again to lengthen the spine more, softenthe front groin and begin to fold at that hip withthe torso over the front leg. Allow your flexibility inthe moment, not your ego, to dictate where yourlower arm ends up resting. The choices from leastchallenging to most are: elbow on front thigh, hand on front shin, hand on block (3 possibleheights) on the pinky toe side of the front foot, hand on front foot, hand on floor on pinky toe sideof front foot. Test the appropriateness of yourchoice. Does it feel energizing and somewhatchallenging? Is your face relaxed? Can youbreathe? Is your spine still long, including theneck? Are your knees still straight, but not locked? Are your arms still like airplane wings with the topone directly over the bottom? All of these are signsof a good placement choice for the bottom arm.A deeper option now is to turn your head andgaze at your top thumb.

To come out, exhale to reground your feet andlegs, then inhale and unfold from your front hip, bringing your head over your pelvis again. Now —-try the other side.

Triangle (trikonasana) is a familiar stand-ing pose commonly introduced in Level 1classes. This early introduction forces animmediate confrontation with ourselvesand plants the seeds for self-inquiry. Atfirst glance, triangle seems to “favor”flexible students, while those who are notthat flexible are immediately challengedby the pose and their egos. Voices say-ing, “I’m the tightest one in class,” “howdepressing,” or even “wow, look at howgreat I’m doing!” are ego-based.

Teacher Feature Meet Carol Stehl

What do you like most about yoga?It depends on what day you ask! On Monday, I mightlike the physicality of it; on Tuesday, I might like how ittrains me to focus; on Wednesday, I might be into thecoolness of pranayama; on Thursday, I might be inwonderment over the opening it creates on all “lev-els” — in body, mind, and spirit. Friday, I just might beall over the challenge. Then, on Saturday, I could beappreciating the beauty of the sangha (community)that yoga brings into my world. But, okay, MOST ofall, I’d have to say I like the overall benefits of well-ness and wholeness yoga offers to anyone and every-one: the short, the tall, the sick, the well, the injured, the young, the old, the rich, the poor. It matters notone’s situation in life, the benefits of yoga areimmeasurable and available to everyone. You don’t even have to “believe” or know what they are. It just happens.

What benefits have you experienced? The benefits I’ve seen are downright astounding! I was initially drawn to yoga for its physical benefits, not knowing of the emotional and spiritual “exercise”yoga also offers. When I first started practicing yogaeight years ago, I discovered a continual increase instrength, flexibility and balance. I then began notic-ing benefits on the mental and emotional side, whichhave served to change my life drastically. I felt I’d dis-covered a big secret in learning how to accept thebumps and challenges of life; it became easier. Then I soon realized a “surprise benefit,” which I found themost important. Not only was yoga helping to clearmy path physically, mentally, emotionally, and ener-getically, but also spiritually. I could see how the prac-tice of yoga was allowing me to more easily “tapinto” the peace, calm and stillness residing deep atthe core of my being, my True Nature. I found howyoga was helping to remove all the layers of junk thatbuild up and block my path to this peace that is mybirthright. What a saving grace! I’ve been able toconnect on deeper and deeper levels with theDivine, something I’ve continually sought all my life.I’m more at peace, handle conflicts and cope withstress with much more ease. Mentally and emotional-ly, I feel more focused, more secure, more confidentand more joy than ever before. Yoga leads to whole-ness, and wholeness leads to holiness!

Why did you decide to become a yoga teacher?I knew from very early on in my practice that I want-ed to teach yoga. I had a feeling of “knowing” likeI’d never had before. It was actually a little shockingto picture myself as a teacher when I’d only beenpracticing for two years. I had a little talk with myself:“You want to do WHAT? You don’t yet know squatabout this practice!” So, I just went with it, and itstayed with me. At a yoga retreat that I’ve returnedto annually for years, the director (a very revered andwise yogini) told me straight and simply, “it is yourdharma to teach yoga, Carol!” And then it hit me! I finally accepted the idea and realized how lucky Iwas, for once in my life, to know I’m on the right path.I was grateful to be so clear about it. I took someteacher training from her, and later enrolled in theSMYS 300-hour program and began teaching threeyears ago. I still have my “day job” as an economicconsultant in D.C. But my favorite “job” is teachingyoga.

What else are you passionate about?Animals! I love all animals. I feel such an affinity for them all. My big focus right now is my new dog,Shadow, a two-year-old, 90-pound Labrador mix.Shadow was unwanted, untrained, neglected andmistreated by his first TWO families. Talk about “livingyour yoga.” Well, in my mere four months withShadow, he has taught me years’ worth of the very qualities I’m always seeking to enhance. Morepatience, more courage, more loving-kindness, more acceptance of “what is,” and more about living just as he does — in the moment!

I’m also passionate about connecting/BEing withfriends and family, and traveling. I like to do what Ican to help/encourage others in whatever way I can,as there are so many in need! I’m hoping to furtherdevelop a new charitable program originally createdby fabulous yoga teacher Laureen Smith called“Yoga for Good”. Each month, a different teachervolunteers time to “give” a donations-only class tobenefit the charity of her/his choice. Sun&Moon graciously offers space for these classes at both studios (Fairfax and Arlington) for the various causes supported.
