Quaid-e- Azam inaugurated SBP on 1st July, 1948
State Bank of Pakistan Order 1948
Initial Mandate to issue Bank Notes, maintain reserves to secure monetary stability and operate currency & credit system to country’s advantage
Order repealed and replaced by State Bank Act of 1956
Scope of work widened to regulate the monetary & credit system and to foster its growth in the best national interest.
Banks were nationalized under the Banks Nationalization Act 1974. Pakistan Banking Council was also created which eroded regulatory powers of SBP.
Amendments of SBP Act 1956 under Financial Sector Reforms Act of 1997 gave autonomy to SBP.
Now SBP is supervised by an independent Board of Directors appointed by Government for fixed tenure of three years.

Merger of Human Resource Department and Administration Department
Consequent upon separation of field offices from State Bank with effect from close ofbusiness on 31st December 2001, all functions of Administration Department have beenshifted to Human Resources Department with effect from January 2002 and Administration Department has ceased to exist
