LITURGY CORNER The Beatitudes Beatitude is a word that means "supreme blessedness." The Church tells us that the saints in Heaven live in a state of perpetu‐al beatitude. The Eight Beatitudes form the core of the Christian life. As Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J., writes in his Modern Catholic Dictionary, they are the ®promises of happiness made by Christ to those who faithfully accept his teaching and follow his divine example." While we re‐fer to those in Heaven as in a state of be‐atitude, the happiness promised in the Eight Beatitudes is not something to be found in the future, in our next life, but right here and now by those who live their lives in accordance with the will of Christ.

Feast of St. Blaise February 3, Friday
Little is known about
St. Blaise although many Catholics affirm their
devotion to him for centuries. Legend has it that as St. Blaise was being transported to prison because he was a Christian, they
stumble upon a mother and her young son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At
his command, the child coughed out the bone. St. Blaise’s protection of those with
throat problems stems from this story. He was martyred in Armenia in 316.
On Friday, Feb.3, we will have the Blessing of the Throats at St. Philip Neri - 8:30 am
mass and at St. Albert - 9:30am mass.
To celebrate the World Day of the Sick, our parish will have a
Mass of Anointing of the Sick on February 3, St. Albert the Great at 9:30 am
and February 4, St. Philip Neri at 5 pm
Candlemas is celebrated on February 2 every year. This day marks the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, 40 days after his birth. An old Jewish custom requires a
mother who gives birth to a son to stay home for a total of 40 days, in which she cannot touch anything holy. On this day, Mother Mary is cleansed.
Simeon, an elderly holy man, was told by the Holy Spirit that death will not come until he saw the Messiah. As he held the baby Jesus, he said, “A light to the revela-
tion of the Gentiles and the glory of thy people of Israel”. This light has been the inspiration for the candles. Candlemas is a day to celebrate the purification of Mary and Jesus’ first appearance at the temple. We will have a Blessing of the Candles on Thursday, Feb. 2 at St. Philip Neri - 8:30 am
and at St. Albert - 7:30 am.

St. Vincent de Paul Men’s Trousers
Clothing Drive The St. Vincent de Paul men’s center in Oakland has virtually no adult, men’s pants to give to the
poor and homeless that visit this center. So, your parish St. Vincent de Paul Conference is sponsoring a clothing drive for men’s pants to
ease this shortage. We will place labeled boxes in the vestibules of St. Philip Neri and St. Albert the Great Churches where you can place donat-ed lightly used or new men’s pants. This drive will continue from the Martin Luther King, Jr.
weekend until the end of February.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.

February Votive Candle offerings For the the intentions of In memory of Denise Maddix Russ Goodman In Honor of all volunteers of the Children’s Faith Formation (CFF) and Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CFW)
Our faith community of St. Philip Neri – St Albert the Great does not just happen – it is some-thing that we build together and continue to work together to develop and witness our faith. Each of us is called to do this in a way and at a level that is appropriate. Everyone should take part in the building up of our faith community. This is not an easy thing to do, however, participating in the building up of community is one of the ways that we live our Catholic life. As faith community, together we take root in our faith, together we sustain, together we continue to witness our faith. It is your contributions throughout these years, that helped us to do all that we did as the community of St. Philip Neri – St. Albert the Great. The various faith formation programs and every activity that we do, would not be possible without the generous contribution of your time, talent and treasure. We are introducing an exciting program that gives you a new way to support our parish: "eGiving" through Faith Direct. The faith direct program gives you: • A convenient and consistent way to support St. Philip Neri - St. Albert the Great by electing to
use direct debit from your bank or credit card account. • The opportunity to support our parish even if you are absent from Mass for travel or illness. • A solution to a situation I know many families face on their way to Mass: where did I put my envelopes?! How does it work? • You can visit faithdirect.net and enroll securely online • For those of you who would not be comfortable going online, you can still enroll in this program
by completing an enrollment form you had received in the mail, or get one from the vestibule or parish office.
• You can elect to have your specified bank or credit card account debited on either the 4th or 15th of the month for both offertory and any second collections.
• Parishioners can elect to receive "offertory cards" in lieu of envelopes to be placed in the collec-tion basket.
• There is no charge to parishioners for enrolling. In fact, every family signing up with Faith Direct means one less package of envelopes to print and mail out
We consider Faith Direct to be a "win-win" program for both parishioners and our parish. I strongly encourage you to enroll in this program. Faith Direct provides the critical third party security needed for this new way of parish support, this limits the liability for our parish and keeps your information in secure hands. I am grateful for your financial and prayerful support of our parish.
