LITURGY CORNER Love one another… Jesus gives this new commandment at the Last Supper. His disciples have travelled with him for several years now. They have witnessed him loving everyone he has encountered. And hopefully these images of Jesus’ love are seared into their memories because the new commandment asks them to continue the work of bringing Christ’s love to the world. St. Teresa of Avila wrote a famous prayer called “Christ has no body.” In it she tells us, “Christ has no body but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours, yours are the eyes with which he looks, compassion on the world.” The responsibility has been passed to us. Now we are the ones who are given this mission: “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” SPN office hours Mon - Fri: 9am - 3pm SA office hours: Mon - Fri 9am - 12nn Staffed by Missionaries of Faith since 2008 For Baptisms: Call the Parish office first for an interview with the pastor or associate. What do you really believe about the Bible, Mary, the Saints, the Pope, and the sacra-ments? Do you want to know more about

the Catholic Faith?

Catholic & Christian, a book from Dynamic-Catholic.com, provides the answers you need. It is a readable and concise summary of often misunderstood Catholic beliefs, the teachings and practices that puzzle Catholics and non-Catholics alike. The author, Alan Schreck, is a professor of theology at Franciscan Uni-versity of Steubenville in Ohio. He is the author of nu-merous books, including The Essential Catholic Cate-chism and St. Francis and Pope Francis: Prayer, Pov-erty, and Joy in Jesus. For more information and to sign up, please call the SPN office at 373-5229. Details to follow soon.

Our 2nd collection this weekend is for the Catholic Charities of the East Bay

We are called by Pope Francis “to go the margins” and help our brothers and sisters. Every year, we are invited by Catholic Charities of the East Bay, to help those in need in our community. Your gift makes it possible for Catholic Charities to help people facing difficult circumstances move forward in life. This includes helping children who face pervasive violence at school, home, or on the streets; fami-lies or seniors facing homelessness; and people fleeing violence in their homelands. Please give generously to this appeal on May 18th and 19th. For more infor-mation, contact Stephan Pippen, Development Manager at [email protected] or (510) 508-1063.

Can you use a little peace this week? Taizé is an ecumenical, candlelit service of prayer in simple chant, Scripture readings, silent worship and

veneration of the Cross, offered as a witness to peace and reconciliation, for which we gather each

month. Join us on Friday, May 24, 2019, at St. Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut Street, 8pm.

There will be NO Exposition of the Blessed

Sacrament on Friday, June 7th at St. Philip Neri due to the Moving Up Ceremony of SPN School.

We will resume our first Friday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on July 5th.

On weekdays in the Easter season, the Acts of the Apostles are read in pretty much a continuous way, with the whole book completed by the end of season. These readings give us a glimpse into the very early life of the church. The early Christian church in the first three centuries after Jesus' resurrection brought about the most amazing transformation of diverse social and religious cultures ever achieved by peaceful means in the history of the world. The churches always had their problems and internal strug‐gles. Nevertheless, the early churches as a whole did represent something different in their world. It at‐tracted both devoted followers and brutal persecutors. Their very life as Christians, living the message of Jesus in day‐to‐day life, became the source and means of both attraction and rejection for people around them. Christ commands us to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. We are to proclaim his Good News to all people, everywhere and at all times. How often do we fail to realize that we are called to be Christ’s witnesses to the world? Do we realize that our Baptism, Confirmation, and reception of the Eu‐charist bestow on us the grace we need to be disciples? Are we like the disciples staring at the sky rather than inviting those around us to experience Christ’s love and mercy through the Church? How often do we reach out to our missing brothers and sisters by inviting them to join us at Mass or by asking why they no longer feel welcomed at the Lord’s Table? The answers to these questions underlie the evangelizing mission of the Church, especially in the call of the New Evangelization. Today, through the ministry of the Church, Jesus continues to call all people to himself. It is esti‐mated that only 23 percent of U.S. Catholics attend Mass each week. Those 77 percent absent from the eucharistic feast each week are not strangers: they are our parents, siblings, spouses, children, and friends. The task before us is to form Catholics who are willing to communicate and witness the faith to those who are no longer actively practicing. By taking up the call of the New Evangelization, we will do as St. Paul commands us: “Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you.” Let us proclaim Christ in our community just like the first Christian community . . . by our lives. Fr. Robert K Chinnapan

WELCOME THE STRANGER NEWS Three years ago, the Welcome the Stranger Ministry met the Rahimi family; a young father who had aided our military in Afghanistan, a very young mother, and their son, 11 month old Ali. The mother, Afsanah, was so frightened of this new world that she found herself in, she just stayed home with her baby, even closing herself and Ali in the bedroom until her husband came home from work. On arrival, only the father had spoken any English. He soon found work in an Afghan restaurant and, with the help of one of our parishioners, we found them a small basement apartment in Ala-meda which we furnished and filled, with the help of St. Vincent de Paul, with all we thought they needed. After a year, the dad himself found and rented a tiny apartment near his work. While they learned something about our culture, we were learning about theirs - making lots of mistakes. Today the whole family is in school; mom and dad finishing up their first year at Alameda Community College, perfecting English and taking classes that will allow them to go on to even higher education. Little Ali, now three years old speaks three languages and chatters away in English. He attends pre-school classes. The Rahimis are fully independent of us, except as friends. Expecting another baby in June, they are committed to their future life in America. If you would like to join us as we look for another family to accompany, contact our Chairperson, Anna Rossi, (510) 814-1038, or email [email protected].
