Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Colne. Let me open by welcoming the players, management, committee and supporters of Colne to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening. It has been a mixed week for Town as we have played well in both the matches we have partaken in this week but have gained only one point when we had chances in both contests to secure all three points. This time last week we welcomed Alsager Town to Knowsley Road and after a first half which was not much to write home about a sublime finish by Mike Scully just into the second half put the hosts into the lead and then created numerous chances to put the game to bed but could not double the lead and paid the price getting caught on the counter attack late in proceedings and indeed were lucky to not to have conceded a spot kick in the final minute of the match. Expectations may not have been high for Saturday’s visit to New Mills after last years mauling at the same venue and the 4-0 loss at Knowsley Road in January. To say the team performance put in by Town was outstanding would be a massive understatement as the boys battled for every ball and took the game to their title chasing hosts. Rob Hanley put Town into a first half lead but an excellent finish saw parity at the interval. Another second half performance of missed chances was to follow and in late controversial circumstances New Mills won the game in the 92nd minute. Even this goal could not detract from the quality of the performance and the immense pride in their team the Town fans in attendance will have felt. Onto this evenings match, an in form Colne side visit us and will be aiming to take revenge for the two home defeats they have been subjected to already this season. Colne have won four of their last six matches drawing the other two, against Ramsbottom and Newcastle breaking their winning run in the process. Gary and the lads will be in no doubt that they are in for a difficult match this evening and will have to battle and scrap for every ball in order to gain three points tonight. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier

Division encounter with tonight’s visitors, friends and rivals Colne FC. Let’s hope their players,

officials and supporters, along with tonight’s match officials and our own home support have

had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter!

It’s been a frustrating last week with points dropped in our last two games. First, last Tuesday

evening saw the visit of Alsager Town who secured a share of the points with a late equaliser.

After a fairly even first period Town went on to dominate large spells of the second half after

Mike Scully had given Town the lead. For those of you who didn’t see the goal - it’s well worth

a watch via the Town Blog. Some slack defending gave our visitors a last gasp chance and I’m

sure Graham McCall will have been disappointed with his effort in stopping the goal. It could

have been much worse had the referee adjudged John Elias’s mistimed challenge to have been

in the box rather than just outside!!

Although I missed last Saturday’s trip to New Mills by all accounts we more than matched our

hosts and were unfortunate to come away on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline. Rob Hanley

gave Town a 36th minute lead before New Mills hit back just before half time. In an end-to-

end second half Town had plenty of chances with the home ‘keeper making some fine saves.

Town again succumbed to a late winner, on this occasion in added on time! From the

comments on various ‘forums’, ‘message boards’ and match reports it seems the referee

missed a handball as Steve Hall went on to score for the Millers. I suppose that’s football and

while the Town fans will be disappointed with the score line the overall performance was superb.

Tonight’s visitors Colne are on a fine run of form with nine goals scored in the last week with a

4-0 win over Atherton LR last Saturday preceded by a 5-1 victory over ‘local’ rivals Silsden.

Colne recently became the first club this season to take a point from runaway league leaders

Newcastle Town, earning a 1-1 draw at the Lyme Valley Stadium. Other results in February

have included wins at home to Ashton Athletic (2-0) and Formby (2-1) plus a creditable 1-1

draw with Ramsbottom United. All this tells us one thing - it’s going to be another tough

evening as our visitors will be looking to avenge the two successes Town secured at Colne

earlier this season (1-2 in the league and 0-1 in the Vodkat League Challenge Cup). Our congratulations also go to Colne ‘keeper Jamie Scott who received the February ‘Safe Hands’

Goalkeeper of the Month award from the Vodkat League.

Town’s Paul Montieth said a farewell to the club last

week as he finally made his long-awaited move to the

US where he will taking up a football coaching post.

Paul has been an excellent club servant over recent

seasons and despite a persistent knee injury he has

maintained a presence in the team and as a regular spectator both home and away. Our best wishes go

with him and I’ve no doubt he will keep in touch!!

In Town Today . . . The town of Colne was left without a major football club after the untimely demise of the highly successful Colne Dynamoes club in 1990. That side had won the NWCL, the Unibond League Division One and the Unibond League Premier Division in consecutive seasons, as well as winning the FA Vase and Lancashire Challenge Trophy within the same period. In January 1996, Colne FC was formed by a group of like-minded people under Dave Blacklock. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non-league football and arrangements were made for the new club to use the now vacant Holt House Stadium, used by the previous club. Colne

FC applied to join the Lancashire Football Association, the North West Counties League and the East Lancashire FA. The LFA and the East Lancashire League accepted their application, but much work was needed to be done on the Holt House ground to bring it up to the standard required for the North West Counties League. After a lot of hard work by everyone at the club, the necessary work was completed in time and Colne were recommended for acceptance into the NWCL. The member clubs at the Leagues AGM approved this in June 1996. Colnes first ever competitive match was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich Athletic and the result ended in a 1-0 defeat. The team was managed in these early days by Keith Mason, but his side was mainly made up of players from the East Lancs League and they always found the going tough. A further 10 defeats followed until a local derby against Nelson ended 1-1, thus giving the new club their first point. Mason resigned from the club owing to work commitments and Colne’s Vice President, Ken Bracewell, stood in until a new manager could be found. The club appointed Denzil Hart. Hart’s first game in charge was a 6-0 away defeat at the hands of Ashton Town. Two games later and Colne had their first ever victory, a thumping 5-2 win over Bacup Borough. Denzil Hart’s job was always tough and although the clubs performances improved, the results were not forthcoming and the club had to apply for re-election after finishing bottom of Division Two. The clubs total of 23 points would, however, have provided safety in either the previous season or the two seasons to follow as neither of the bottom two clubs from those seasons amassed more than 22 points. It wasn’t all gloom though, and a highlight of that first season was the Reserves, managed by Mick Molloy, winning the B.E.P. Cup at Clitheroe FC’s Shawbridge ground. Having been re-elected to the NWCL for the 1997/98 season, Hart started his plans to see Colne FC become a side to be reckoned with. The performances from his young squad were excellent but the results did not follow as expected and the club finished 18th with 31 points. The clubs third season saw them finish 16th with 40 points in a very tough campaign, which saw eighth position to seventeenth position split only by ten points. The club also saw its first cup victories and reached the League Challenge Cup 2nd round, losing 1-0 at First Division Prescot Cables (who went on to appear in the final) and also the second round of the Division Two Trophy, losing 2-5 at home to Abbey Hey. The clubs fourth season was eagerly awaited but in September 2000 manager Denzil Hart left the club by mutual agreement. Player John Lister was asked to take temporary control of team affairs and club captain Gary Halton was made his assistant. A month later Lister’s appointment was made permanent. It was a difficult seven months for Lister, changes in the team and some



. . . Colne Football Club young inexperienced players meant that despite a number of goals for Lee Colridge, the club had to settle for second from bottom. However, Lister learned lessons from that campaign and the young players gained experience. In 2001/02 Colne ended the season with their highest ever League position of 14th and it seemed the crop of local youngsters along with a few more experienced players had finally turned the fortunes of Colne FC. In the summer of 2002, James Webster took control of the club to become the youngest Chairman in the League at 24. Webster was a player at the club with plenty of experience and had a strong desire to see the current Colne side emulate the success of their predecessors It wasn’t only on the pitch that results improved as the club embarked on ground improvements with an eye to the future, ensuring that when the time came they would be able to take their place in Division One without any grading problems. 2002/03 season started well enough, but in December 2002 John Lister resigned as manager. Webster, along with player Andy Lawson took temporary charge of team affairs, during which time goalkeeper Ross Baxter won the NWCL “Safe Hands” award. Paul Lynch took over as manager and improvements in performances continued, but in August 2003 he left to take over at Rossendale United. The Colne committee responded immediately by appointing Nigel Coates as the new manager and he took Gary Rishton as his assistant. Nigel had played for the Dynamoes team, and had experience of management at near neighbours Nelson. Such was the impact of Nigel’s arrival as manager, that he immediately won the September Manager of the Month award, a feat he repeated in November and April. 2003/04 brought back the glory days to Colne with a string of successes. In the League Colne had to play catch up after successful cup runs, but ended the season ten points clear, scoring 102 goals in their 38 games. The completed the “double” by winning the Division Two Trophy 1-0 over Great Harwood Town, Added to that, Carl Howarth was the top goalscorer in the whole NWCL, whilst in April, Nigel Coates won Manager of the Month award, Scott Gizon won “Player of the Month” and Ross Baxter took the “Safe Hands” award. The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase which saw them reach the semi-finals before bowing out 4-3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. Season 2004/5 saw Colne start off well in the NWCL First Division but run out of steam and a poor run after the turn of the year saw them slide down the table to their eventual finishing position of 10th. The club again had a good run in the FA Vase going out to eventual winners Didcot Town in the 5th round. 2005/6 saw the side record their best ever finish in their short history winning 22 matches and ending the term in 9th place. Colne finished the 2006/7 season in 11th place. The however surpassed themselves last term when they were one of the surprise packages in Division One finishing in a club record 5th position meaning they have finished in the top half of the table in each of their four seasons in the top flight of the league. They club also unveiled plans to build a new Conference standard ground adjacent to the present Holt House Stadium. Last term was not the best for the Holt House club and they struggled at the wrong end of the table. It took an excellent run of form in the final few months of the season saw them pull clear of the relegation zone and they finished in 18th position.

Around The Grounds Valerie Park

Prescot Cables

With the number of home

games having out numbered

away ones, and having run

out of Vodkat League

grounds for this page, a little

improvisation was needed

and further afield needed to

be explored.

At least in terms of leagues if

not physical distance. This is

the age old ground of Valerie

Park home to Prescot Cables,

the dear friends and arch

rivals. Set right in the middle of the Town, Valerie Park offers spectators an

atmospheric experience with just about any option of viewing position. The

old stand that was bought and transported brick by brick from Everton football

club graces one side of the pitch, and also contains the changing rooms and

excellent clubhouse facility.

Both seating and standing is available from this elevated position, with the

only downside being the obstruction of view caused by the floodlights. Behind

the goal at the entrance end is a covered standing area capable of

accommodating a large number of supporters on a wet weather night and Lord

knows there’s plenty of those around these parts.

The rest of the ground is open standing but behind the other goal there is a

degree of elevation to enhance your view of the game. It is also one of these

grounds where the touchlines are

right up close to the perimeter

fence, making you feel a part of

the action when players come

steaming towards you on a break

downfield.

A good little ground this, well

worth a visit if you are ever in

the area, if St Helens Town are

postponed of course!

St Helens Town AFC . . . Re-formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground.

The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league

ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.



. . . A Brief History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was

transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Introduction to the . . . Graeme McCall: Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keeper’s jersey. Kevin Woods: Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets.

Neil Jones: Commanding centre half now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke: Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Rob Hanley: Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Iain Dyson: Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club’s top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond, had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell: Brother of Graeme, followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Adam Gilchrist: Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens: Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Dougie Pitts: Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere.



St. Helens Town squad Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen ‘Ben’ Kay: Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Nick McLoughlin: Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Paul Monteith: Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Peter Birch: Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possesses good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces. Luke Faulkner: Seventeen year old central defender who has recently joined the club from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Lee Riley: Joined the club last season as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables. Gary Bickerstaffe: Rejoined the club late last season as manager having had a previous spell as a player in the 1990s. His arrival last term ensured we staved off relegation comfortably with eight wins from our last 11 league encounters. A mid-field dynamo at the height of his playing career Gary has graced a number of clubs including Congleton Town, Winsford United and Bangor City and has been assistant Manager at both Warrington Town and Congleton and Manager at Garswood United. Other squad players include prolific strikers David Burns and Jamie Foster along with Andy Gillespie and Danny Clarke who have all stepped up from St Helens Town Reserve team football so far this season.

Fan’s Eye View Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this evenings Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division match against Colne. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. This season, I have been spoilt as a supporter of St Helens Town FC, and this fact has become apparent in recent weeks. The fact that recent results haven’t gone Town’s way and all in a similar fashion have really hit home just how different this season has been compared to last. Against Padiham, Alsager and now New Mills, Town have dropped points with late concedes, and I stand at the end of

these matches disappointed. Last season, I was standing with pride at the end of matches after Town had been defeated 0-3, 0-4 and on occasions 0-5. If that’s not the definition of being spoilt then I don’t know what is! My one concern has now seemingly materialised that results are now determining the amount of enjoyment that is experienced from a match day and this is something I’m very keen to eradicate from Saturday afternoons and Tuesday evenings. Last season, although at times it felt like a duty, watching St Helens Town was something that was done for the enjoyment and pride in watching your hometown represented in a sporting capacity for nothing other than the determination and drive to do well, this

season expectation has now taken hold due to the simply fantastic season the club have had so far. Possibly now is the time for a little bit of reflection and

to remember exactly where the club are now compared to last year, let’s see if I still feel disappointed then, I suspect I probably won’t. Onto tonight’s match now though and the visit of Colne FC to Knowsley Road for the third encounter between the two sides this season. St Helens Town will be looking to make it a hat-trick of victories over their Lancashire rivals this season after both visits to the XLCR Stadium this season ended in very narrow victories. However don’t be fooled into thinking this evenings match is a formality for Town, its anything but. Colne currently sit in mid-table but have been on a good run of form lately, ending Newcastle Town’s winning run with a 1-1 draw before resoundingly beating Atherton LR 4-0 at the weekend. No doubt they will be keen to get a result against Town tonight to even the balance slightly after the two games at their own ground. Hopefully, this is not the beginning of a mini-slide for Town with results taking a slight dip, a good result tonight will be just what the doctor ordered and hopefully us as supporters will be able to cheer the players onto a victory tonight to complete the Colne hat-trick. Vodkat League News VODKAT PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARDS PREMIER DIVISION - DAVID MORRIS OF GLOSSOP NORTH END

David (not Dave!) had an excellent month, moving into a position that was a bit unfamiliar for him. He is used to playing a little further forward, but thanks to a suspension to club captain Jason Gorton, David was asked to play in the slot in front of the back four. David is a natural passer of the ball, and has found that this spot has allowed him to become the fulcrum of the midfield, picking up the ball and spreading the play with simple but effective passing. He has great vision, and this

ability allows him to pick passes that others might not see. It was a great month for the man who has been with the club for five years.

DIVISION ONE- MIKE KEWLEY OF HOLKER OLD BOYS Mike hadn't played a game since mid-November before coming on as a substitute against AFC Blackpool in late January, but since then he has played in every game. He is a strong robust forward who not only finishes well , but can hold a ball up and lay it off with great effect, and tackles effectively to gain possession. His form in February was outstanding and he scored five goals and contributed three assists in the club's four game unbeaten run during the month, which made a significant contribution to the club's rise up the Division One table . SAFE HANDS GOALKEEPER OF THE MONTH AWARDS SPONSORED BY SAMEDAY - GLOVES SPONSORED BY PAXSPORT PREMIER DIVISION - JAMIE SCOTT OF COLNE In a month that saw Colne finish unbeaten with two wins and two draws, Jamie turned in two man of the match performances. Against Ramsbottom United he superbly saved a well taken penalty and was unlucky to be beaten by a late goal. Against Formby he was beaten by an early penalty, but performed heroics to defy them and keep Colne in the game with two superb double saves which allowed the team claim a late victory. He turned in another fine all round performance against Ashton Athletic, including another penalty save that helped to secure only the fourth clean sheet of the season.

DIVISION ONE - DANNY PEARSON OF OLDHAM BORO Danny played a major part in his side's good run of results during February, and turned in outstanding performances against teams in Division One who have been putting a good run of form together. His presence and ability to control his area combined with his quick release of the ball helps to relieve the pressures of opposition attacks, and his ability to make fine one handed and point blank saves helps to spread confidence and reassurance among his team mates, Danny's performances helped Boro to maintain an unbeaten run during the month, all the more impressive considering that the team finished the month in second from bottom position.

St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town

Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, B u r n l e y ,

Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Saturday 2nd March; Vodkat League Premier Division; New Mills 2-1 St Helens Town

St Helens Town left Derbyshire this afternoon wondering how they lost this match after putting in an

awesome shift. Some of the visiting faithful will have arrived at Church Road wondering how many the hosts would win by and when the team news filtered through that in form striker Mike Scully and

February player of the month Luke Faulkner were absent and Iain Dyson and Phil Mitchell were rested

with Ian Frazer, Craig Cunningham, Graeme Mitchell and Peter Birch elevated to the starting line up the

chances look slightly worse. The first clear cut chance fell to the hosts on 26 minutes when an attack

down the left saw the ball delivered into the box and an initial effort was blocked, the ball broke to

Steven Smith and he was thwarted by an excellent block from Birch. A few minutes later good work by Hanley saw him find Graeme Mitchell on the edge of the box and his effort went just wide of the right

hand upright. At the other end a left wing corner eventually found its way to Jamie Baguley and his effort

from the edge of the area struck the right hand upright and was cleared. Town opened the scoring on 36

minutes when from an innocuous position in midfield Chris Baguley lost his footing and Frazer took

advantage to release Hanley he cushioned the ball into his own path with a header drew the keeper and

slotted past him to send the Town fans behind the goal wild with delight. The visitors spurned a chance to double the lead when Mitchell released Hanley with a well weighted ball the advancing keeper just did

enough to thwart Haley but the ball broke back to Mitchell the home pitch advantage helped New Mills as

the poor surface stopped Mitchell controlling the ball quickly and the chance to shoot at the unguarded

goal was lost. The hosts levelled before the interval when a generous free kick was awarded on the left

wing but there was no doubt about the finish as Dave Swarbrick took a touch and half volley the ball

home.

The half time interval saw Hanley replaced by Dyson after he had taken a couple of knocks to the head

during a “robust” first period. Town looked to enjoy playing down the hill and created a trio of chances in

the opening five minutes after the restart. First Dyson chased a defender down and blocked his clearance

into the path of Mitchell he attempted a first time shot and this went just wide of the right post. This was

followed by Mitchell collecting a quick throw getting into the box and Ingram-Hughes had to be alert to smother his effort. Marc Stephens rounded off the trio when his curling effort from 25 yards was well

held by the home stopper on 50 minutes. ust after the hour mark Graeme McCall was called into action

to preserve parity when Swarbrick advanced down the right and crossed to the far post where Jamie

Baguley applied a diving header that the visiting stopper reacted well to keep out. Another spell of Town

pressure saw Phil Mitchell collect a through ball and he looked to be through on goal but a fine challenge

from Daniel Jackson averted the danger. This was followed by a fine piece of vision by Frazer as he found Birch centrally with a long throw and the resultant effort went just over the crossbar. New Mills

threatened on 76 minutes when Chris Baguley delivered a right wing free kick into the 6 yard box which

John Elias had to head over the crossbar and from the resultant set piece the same player delivered and

the ball looked to be curling home but McCall clawed the ball off target and the loose ball was cleared.

With time running out and the hosts desperate to gain maximum spoils in what looks like a vain chase of

runaway leaders Newcastle Town, they looked to pump the ball long to carve a way through the Town rearguard. With this tactic the game became stretched and Town almost netted a winner. Phil Mitchell

had a free kick from the left of the box held by the home custodian and Brain Hatton was released on the

left of the box his curling effort looked to have the beating of the keeper as it curled into the top corner

of the net but somehow extended himself to push the effort off target Phil Mitchell picked up the loose

ball and turned it back into the danger area but the ball was cleared. At the other end a counter attack a

ball was delivered from the left across the box and was half cleared but the resultant shot cannoned off the right hand upright and away. Another probing run by Phil Mitchell caused New Mills problems as he

got down the left and squared the ball into the six-yard box which Bowler did well to turn away from

Hatton. Town were to Chris Baguley’s effort on the right was blocked on the line by Dyson and broke

back to him, his second effort was awful but broke kindly for Steven Hall on the opposite side of the box

he looked to have taken the ball under control with the use of his hand but no whistle was forthcoming

and his diagonal shot found the corner to give the hosts a victory their performance did not merit.

Goal landmark for Silverlands striker Last Tuesday evening saw Mark Reed score his 150th goal for Buxton in his side’s 2-2 home draw against Marine. His goals have come at a fantastic strike rate arriving in just 229 starts and 23

substitute appearances. 'Reedy' was awarded a framed shirt by the club in recognition of the achievement before Saturday's clash at the Silverlands with FC United and he went on to celebrate with his 151st goal for the club in the Bucks convincing 3-0 win.

Floodlight failure hits club three times Prior to this season no follower of Whitby Town could remember their side losing a fixture to floodlight failure. Tuesday’s abandonment at Frickley Athletic, however, was the third time on their travels in less than six months that the lights have gone out on Whitby. They first suffered a blackout at Retford in

October followed by darkness at Marine in November with Tuesday’s light failure giving the North Yorkshire club an unwanted hat-trick.

Vodkat League News Town Play The Generation Game Most people who are familiar with Newcastle Town's

playing squads over the years in the North West Counties

League will recognize the names Holmes, Diskin and

Sutton.

Goalkeeper Chris Holmes, defender John Diskin and

forward Dave Sutton were mainstays of the Town first team squad for

many seasons, but on Tuesday night Town supporters could have

been forgiven for wondering if manager Greg Clowes was suffering

from a bout of All Our Yesterdays, as the names Holmes, Diskin and

Sutton appeared on the teamsheet once more.

However, the modern day trio consists of Matt Holmes, Kyle Diskin

and Nathan Sutton, the sons of Chris, John and Dave, and part of

Town's young and successful Reserve and Youth Team set up.

Town secretary Ray Tatton said: "All three lads have recently tested

the water with the first team and have certainly not looked out of

their depth as they have covered successfully for injuries and

suspensions. They seem to have a good future with the club and if

they match their dads Castle will not have a lot to worry about. And

the dads - they had to watch

proudly from the sidelines on Tuesday

night".

Saint’s Alive . . . A man arrives home to find his wife in floods of tears.

“Whatever’s the matter?” he asks. “I telephoned the chemist for

some simple advice and he just insulted me,” she sobs.

Incensed, he rushes from the house, jumps into his car, and

speeds to the pharmacy to defend his wife and give the chemist

a piece of his mind. “Please allow me to explain,” says the

chemist after facing up to the husband’s tirade. “Firstly, my

alarm didn’t go off and I overslept. Rushing out, I locked both

my house and car keys inside and had to break a window to get

them back. Then I had a puncture and, when I finally arrived

behind the counter, there was a long queue and the phone was ringing. The till

roll had run out and, after bending to pick up a new one, I banged my head on

a drawer and fell backwards into the perfume display cabinet. Meanwhile, the

phone was still ringing. I answered it and your wife asked me how to use a

rectal thermometer. Honestly, all I did was tell her.”

A sheep farmer calls in the vet because he has a ram that keeps banging its

head against the barn door. The vet surmises that the ram is probably

depressed and frustrated, and that playing some music should calm it. Several

weeks later the vet visits the farmer again, and is told that the ram has died.

“Did you play it some music?” he enquires. “Yes, all day, every day,” replies

the farmer. “And what did you play?” demands the vet. “My favourite Frank

Sinatra track,” replies the farmer. “There’ll Never Be Another Ewe.”

Freewheeling down a country lane at a fair old speed, a cyclist is amazed to be

overtaken by what appears to be a three-legged chicken. Seeing it turn onto a

farm track, he decides to follow and find out who could own such a strange

creature. He soon comes to a group of farm buildings and sees the chicken

join a host of three-legged fowl in the farmyard. Unable to contain his

curiosity, he goes up to the farmhouse and knocks on the door, which is

immediately opened by the farmer. “I’m sorry to disturb you,” says the cyclist.

“Are my eyes deceiving me, or do you have a farmyard full of chickens with

three legs?” “You’re not seeing things,” replies the farmer. “There’s just me,

the wife, and our lad living at the farm, and were all prefer to eat a leg when

we have roast chicken for dinner. So I decided to try breeding them with three

legs, and finally succeeded two years ago.” “That’s absolutely amazing,” gasps

the wide-eyed cyclist. “And what do they taste like?” “Dunno,” says the

farmer, scratching his head. “We haven’t managed to catch one yet.”
