St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Ramsbottom United. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Ramsbottom United to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening. After a bit of frustration over the last week and a half without a game due to varying circumstances it was nice to see the lads back on the park on Saturday and whilst the game might not have been as straight forward as the 2-0 scoreline suggests it was a fine victory and a much needed three points against an unrecognisable Abbey Hey side from the one we beat 5-1 on the opening day of the season. Whilst we did not play fantastically for 90 minutes it is credit to Gary Bickerstaffe and his backroom staff that we are a team that can still secure the maximum return when we are not firing on all cylinders. A brace from Mike Scully making it four in the last two matches was enough to beat the basement side who will surprise a few sides in the next few months. The next two matches here at Knowsley Road and indeed this coming week are an acid test for the team. When we have met sides above us in the table so far this season we have come up short and have not had a positive return since we drew with a Bootle side that we above us at that stage in our first home match of this season way back in August. The game this evening against Ramsbottom United and on Saturday against a Congleton Town side that beat us at Booth Street in October will show how far we have come as a team in the last year. Saturday was not just a good day for the first team as the reserves also recorded a 3-0 away win at NELTC reserves in the John Gregson Memorial Cup to cement their place at the top of the table and they are looking good for a place in the Semi Final of the competition with the potential of some silverware for them come the end of the season. This evening more then ever your support is vital for the lads. Lets get behind them and hopefully cheer them on to victory which could be telling. Enjoy the Game - Jeff Voller

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this
Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals
Ramsbottom United FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and
supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support
have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short
stay as well as an entertaining encounter!
Tonight’s game is the second of three games in a week at Knowsley Road. Last Saturday we
played host to a much-changed Abbey Hey outfit who proved tough opposition and the lads
had to battle hard for their 2-0 victory. Two goals from Man
of the Match Mike Scully (pictured left), giving him four in
two games, were what separated the sides. His first effort
must be a contender for the goal of the season with some
excellent build-up play which saw a 40 yard pin-point cross
field pass from Scully to Phil Mitchell and then an equally
precise left footed cross from wide which Scully headed home
- a goal that deserved to win any match. We had to wait
until the last quarter of the game before the points were secure. After making an excellent save the Abbey Hey
‘keeper then failed to hold an easy cross and his error
allowed Scully to tap home from two yards out. Abbey Hey
have certainly improved since our opening day 5-1 victory in
Gorton and if their performances continue they’ve every chance of closing the gap on those
teams immediately above them.
Tonight’s visitors Ramsbottom United are having a great season and currently stand in
fourth position, one place above Town in the league table but importantly six points separate
us. It’s fair to say that if we are going to keep pace with the top four we must ensure we
get something from tonight’s encounter and in doing so buck a trend which has seen our
visitors dominate recent score-lines. Last season we were beaten 6-3 here at Knowsley Road at the end of March having lost 1-3 at the Riverside a couple of week earlier; although
our overall record against ‘Rammy’ is still pretty good with ten wins and five draws from
twenty-four meetings. Saturday sees the visit of another top four side when Congleton
Town make the trip to St Helens. I am sure Gary will be looking to avenge the defeat at
Booth Street earlier in the season and continue Congleton’s recent poor form - but again it
will take another good performance and lots of effort if we are to get anything from that
game!
Goals from David Burns, Jamie Foster and Andy Gillespie secured a 3-0 win for the Reserves
last Saturday against NELTEC and although they have played more games than their
opponents Steve Pennington’s outfit head the league table in the John Gregson Memorial
Trophy and now have a nine point cushion.
Finally, our best wishes go to Ramsbottom player Matt Edgington who is, at the time of
writing, in a serious condition in hospital having suffered from an unprovoked attack last
Saturday evening in Manchester. Let’s hope Matt makes a quick return to full health.
Enjoy the game and join us in the Black Bull after the game . . .

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
In Town Today . . . The club’s present chairman Harry Williams founded Ramsbottom United Football Club in 1966. Harry has been without doubt the driving force that has taken the Rams from the public park pitch and the Bury Amateur League to today’s Riverside Ground and the North West Counties Football League. The club played for eighteen years in the Bolton Combination before moving to the Manchester League in 1987. At the end of the 1994-95 season, the club applied to join the North West Counties Football League and were admitted in June 1995. The Rams first season in the North West Counties Football League
couldn’t have been much better. Although finishing in 12th position, they managed to bring in their first NWCFL silverware lifting the Second Division Trophy after a fine 2 - 1 victory over Cheadle Town at Darwen’s Anchor Ground. During the 1996-97 season the club made great strides in achieving their goal of becoming one of the valley’s top sides. After one of the most dramatic endings to a season, they lifted the Second Division Championship beating Haslingden on goal difference. The club started the mammoth task of erecting floodlights at their Riverside Ground. The lights had to be in place way before the start of the new season, as without them promotion would not have been possible. This season saw the club entered the FA Vase for the first time but were defeated in the preliminary round by Tetley Walker. The first couple of months saw the team struggle in the first division, but as time went by, they improved and climbed the table, the season ended with the club in 17th . In 1998-99 the club once again stepped forwards by entering the FA Cup for the very first time. A fine run in the world’s oldest cup competition saw the Rams make it to the Third Qualifying Round, only to lose to Southport. 829 visitors turned out in atrocious conditions, easily breaking the previous record of 464. The 1999-2000 season turned out to be one of the best seen since the club's championship winning season of 1996-97. After a slow start, the Rams managed to finish the season in third position, on 79 points. Russell Brierley became the clubs top scorer in any one season with 39 league and cup goals. After the euphoria of finishing third the previous season the Rams now had standards to maintain. After another poor start to the season, two wins and three defeats the Rams slipped into mid-table obscurity but in the ranks hopes were still high. The Rams were inconsistent in the cup competitions and had exited most of the competitions by the second round. Mid-November saw the team slowly catch up on the top clubs but with the atrocious weather conditions thwarted their challenge. The Rams managed to grind out some excellent results with the most notable one being the 3 - 0 win over Rossendale. Easter arrived and the team were only 9 points adrift of Rossendale but had four games in hand. Another excellent victory over Rossendale, this time away at Dark Lane saw the Rams emerge as serious title contenders. Rossendale managed to win their remaining 5 games to take the title. Mike Kelly took over in May 2001 but he could not keep the Rams going near the top of the league and a 15th place finish saw him resign. Andy Grimshaw took over as manager and whilst results were still not great, he was slowly starting to put a team together capable of challenging. The club found themselves once more moving up the league. It came as a huge blow to the club and supporters when Grimshaw resigned in November 2003. November saw Vince Overson appointed manager. and the club finished in the season in 17th. Overson resigned stating work commitments as the reason. Derek Egan took over the reigns, he brought

In Town Today . . . an entire new squad to the Riverside during the 2004-05 season and they played some of the best football seen in years as they marched up the table. By December they were in 6th position and everything was going well. They had just completed a famous league double over eventual champions Fleetwood Town and they seemed destined to finish as runners-up. However, one or two poor displays towards the end of the season including a defeat at Knowsley Road meant the Rams finished in 5th position. After recent poor seasons, this was a truly fantastic performance by the side. More gloom was to descend on the Riverside shortly after the season ended as Egan resigned saying the club lacked commitment, the club responded saying they simply could not offer Egan the money he wanted. In May 2005, the club appointed Lee Sculpher as their 5th manager in 4 years. The Rams however finished the 2005/6 campaign in a disappointing 18th position. Schupher did however lead the club to glory in the Bolton Hospital Cup when they beat Eagley 2-1 in the final at the Reebok Stadium. 2006-07 saw a much improved performance from the team as Sculpher kept hold of the majority of his squad from the previous year and this paid dividends as the club finished in 8th position, results were better, the standard of football was much better and most importantly they managed to improve on their poor finish of 18th the year before. They also managed to retain the Bolton Hospitals Cup after beating Tempest United in a one-sided final at the Reebok, the Rams running out comfortable 5-1 winners. A poor run saw Sculpher resign just after defeating Town on 6th October 2007 and the board moved quickly, Neil Hart and Ian McClellan were appointed as first team manager and assistant manager. Again, hopes were high that the club can finally bring success back to the Riverside. Neil was formally manager of Turton Football Club whilst Ian McClellan was assistant manager of Salford City Football Club. However, despite winning the Hospital's Cup for the 3rd consecutive season results once again proved to be unconvincing and both Neil and Iain resigned from the club at the end of the 2007 season.
During May the club interviewed many prospective managers and it w a s A n d y F e e l e y w h o w as overwhelmingly voted in as the new manager. He has had to start from scratch as many of the players who played under Neil Hart have decided to join their former manager at Turton . Feeley left the club in January 2009 and Paul Williams, his assistant, was handed the job in a
caretaker role. A disappointing run of results towards the end of the 2008-2009 saw Williams not offered the full time job and he was released. Two weeks later, however, two former players – Anthony Johnson, returning to the club after a spell at Clitheroe and Bernard Morley, who had already rejoined the Rams in January 2009 from the same Unibond outfit, were given the full-time position in a player-manager capacity with John Hunter assisting them as coach.

Vodkat League News CONGLETON TOWN SALUTE 1989 FA CUP HEROES
The 18th of November 2009 marked the 20th
anniversary of Congleton Town’s appearance in the
First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup, the first and only
time the club has achieved this prestigious mark in
its’ 108 year history.
This achievement was recognised at Saturday’s
home fixture against Padiham, where all eleven
players in the starting line-up, the substitutes, and
one of the then joint-managers, were reunited at the game as guests
of the match sponsors, the Beartown Football Supporters’ Trust.
In reaching the first round proper the team had to negotiate ties
against Denaby Utd, Caernarfon Town, Colwyn Bay (via a replay) and
Witton Albion. The draw to establish the club’s first round opponents
was hotly anticipated and a trip to Gresty Road to face local football
league neighbours Crewe Alexandra was a fitting reward.
The match itself was played to a capacity crowd with Congleton
supporters occupying the then ‘Railway End’ of the ground. Crewe
fans occupied the other three sides of the ground and there was
plenty of local rivalry on display with
loud chanting, albeit friendly, between
the two sets of supporters. A very
competitive, but fair game of football
ensued, with the Bears matching their
opponents for long periods of the
game. However, despite the heroic
efforts of the non-league side, Crewe
eventually ran out winners by a score
of 2-0.
The club would like to thank the
Beartown Football Supporters’ Trust for
all the hard work they have put in to
organise the reunion and mark such a
great occasion in the club’s history.
Tracking down all the players and at
least one of the management team will
have been no easy task.

Around The Grounds Look Local Stadium – Stocksbridge Park Steels
With Town not having a game on the last Saturday in September I took up the invitation from my Brother in Law to see his team
C o n f e r e n c e N o r t h o u t f i t S t a l y b r i d g e C e l t i c v i s i t Stocksbridge Park Steels in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. After a rather interesting trip from “Stalyvegas” via what can only be described as a single lane dirt track in which we were confronted by a tractor coming the other way,
thanks sat-nav we arrived at Bracken Moor with plenty of time to spare.
We approached the turnstiles paid our admission and upon entering the ground you are at the top of structure the club shop/cafeteria and club house are off to your right as are the players’ dressing rooms. The pitch is several feet below you in what resembles a cut out bowl the pitch was in excellent condition and the raised area below the club house housed a terrace area which gave an excellent pitched view of the first half. The ground is three sided in nature with two terraced areas at the turnstile end of the ground, once of which is covered. Running down the right hand side as you enter there is the main stand which houses all the seats in the
ground and at the far end is an area of uncovered hard standing. The side on the left of the pitch sees a fence and behind this fence is where the cricket club used to play and now houses another football pitch. The ground is an excellent facility and is credit to the Steels. The match was an
excellent contest with the hosts taking the lead before Celtic went on to record a 7-2 victory. Overall score: 7/10

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Town History St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History Formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn
were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division.
Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953
and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and

Town History Brian Rigby. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final,
despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Town Pen Pictures Graeme McCall; Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keepers jersey. Kevin Woods; Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He
retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones; Commanding Centre Half who now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke; Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias; Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Paul Monteith; Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Iain Dyson; Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the clubs top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell; Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell; Brother of Graeme followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Brian Hatton; The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause

Town Pen Pictures havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Adam Gilchrist; Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield.
Marc Stephens; Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Ian Frazer; Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Rob Hanley; Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Mark Evans; Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen “Ben” Kay; Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Faragher; Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Dougie Pitts; Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere. Nick McLoughlin; Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Peter Birch; Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possess good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Fan’s Eye View Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this evenings Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division match against Ramsbottom United. May the travelling supporters enjoy the match, but not the result.
So as it turned out, the long break between matches didn’t affect St Helens Town and
they managed to pick up their 2nd win on the bounce against Abbey Hey last Saturday, even though the performance wasn’t the best they have produced this season. An early goal from Mike Scully saw Town go in front and never lose that status, but Abbey Hey have dramatically improved from the opening day of the season and created some very good chances for themselves to score in the
game but they couldn’t take any of them. The Town defence was caused many a problem in the first half with Abbey Hey’s waves of attacks, but Town looked stronger in the second half and Mike Scully’s 2nd goal of the
match after a goalkeeping error made the match and points safe. Scully must certainly have been eating his Weetabix recently as he has now scored four goals in the last two games. Onto tonight’s match though and something of a “six-point” encounter against Ramsbottom United. Our visitors this evening have been in great form of late after picking up a win away at Alsager Town at the
weekend and currently lie in 4th in the league, one position above St Helens Town. So tonight’s match provides both teams competing with an opportunity, Ramsbottom could pull away from Town to make it very difficult to catch them, or St Helens Town could really start to put the pressure on the teams above them with a win this evening. Once again it’s down to the action on the pitch, let’s be loud and proud and get behind the players this evening, hopefully cheering them onto a victory. Stand tall and play proud boys, we’re right behind you!

Vodkat League News Sportsmanship In The Vodkat League Ray Tatton, Secretary at Newcastle Town, has submitted the following note for publication by the Vodkat League. Newcastle Town are pleased to report that sportsmanship is alive and well in the Vodkat League. Following a keenly fought
game last Wednesday between Glossop North End and Newcastle Town it was wonderful to see that a large number of Glossop supporters stayed behind until Newcastle had finished their de-brief and then gave them a tremendous round of applause as they left the pitch, even though Newcastle had just beaten their own side. The standard of football from both sides was a credit to the Vodkat League and I am sure that everyone had value for money. The officials, management and players of Glossop were also a credit in their response to their defeat and we would like to thank them for their hospitality. This is not the only occasion this season when sportsmanship has reared its wonderful head. Earlier in the season we received a lovely letter from Ashton Athletic even though we had just beaten them 6-0. Not only did it praise our football but also the
manner in which we conducted ourselves after the victory - great credit to a side following such a heavy defeat. May we add that wherever we have been this season, the treatment and hospitality of every team has been first class and perhaps some of the people who complain about the lack of sportsmanship in the game ought to come along and see the real meaning of non-league football through the Vodkat League. Finally, I hope that we show the same level of sportsmanship towards the team which finally takes our 100% record. First Division Trophy Quarter-Final Draw The draw for the Quarter Final matches of the Vodkat League First Division Trophy was made this afternoon. However, with four Second Round ties
postponed on Saturday due to waterlogged pitches, only one Quarter Final tie is known. Stone who overcame Ashton Town 3-1 will host Barnoldswick who reached the quarter finals thanks to a Adam Hayton goal five minutes from time which gave them a 2-1 victory at Eccleshall. Cheadle Town edged out Oldham Boro by the odd goal in five and will now visit either Norton United or Irlam. AFC Liverpool's 3-1 victory over Holker Old Boys earns them a visit to Leek CSOB or Wigan Robin Park. First Division Trophy Quarter Final Draw; Ties to be played on 13/02/10 Daisy Hill or AFC Blackpool .v. Rochdale Town or Chadderton
Leek CSOB or Wigan Robin Park .v. AFC Liverpool Norton United or Irlam .v. Cheadle Town Stone Dominoes .v. Barnoldswick Town

St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town
Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, B u r n l e y ,
Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. For further information see the club’s website: www.sthelenstownjfc.co.uk.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Match Report Sat 28 Nov Vodkat Premier Division St Helens Town 2-0 Abbey Hey After a frustrating 11 days Town got back onto the pitch and secured their tenth win of
the season against a much improved Abbey Hey outfit who belied their position at the foot
of the table. Town took the lead with their first real foray forward on five minutes. Mike
Scully played a fine ball out to Phil Mitchell on the left wing he did well to keep the ball in
play he then advanced towards goal finding Scully with a pinpoint cross which the
frontman rose to head past the visiting stopper. With the hosts a goal to the good it
looked like they would take control of the game but it was the visitors who were to threaten more in the next twenty minutes of play. Daniel Cocks advanced down the right
wing and his cross was blocked but the loose ball broke to John Hardy who was unmarked
but he somehow managed to shoot wide of the left hand post when he should have
scored. Cocks was again in the action when he found Hardy on the edge of the box but
an excellent block from John Elias saw the danger averted. Scully almost added a second
for the hosts against the run of play when he chased down an Ian Frazer though ball the
visiting stopper met him 5 yards outside the penalty area but Scully won the sliding
challenge and with the keeper stranded swiftly turned the ball goalwards whilst still on the
floor but a well placed Gareth Wager cleared the ball to spare the keepers blushes. Just
after the half hour Town had Graeme McCall to thank for retaining their lead, a poor
backpass as collected by Hardy on the edge of the box and his shot was kept out by the
home stopper with his legs.
The second half saw Town forced into two early changes as Chris Burke & Ben Kay had to
leave the field to be replaced by Iain Dyson & Rob Hanley. Quick thinking by Scully almost made it 2-0 on 58 minutes when he latched onto a clearance and with the goalkeeper
stranded his snap-shot went into the side netting. Graeme McCall was again called into
action to keep Town in front when he had to be alert to push a well placed free kick from
Lee Knowles away from goal and this let off was compounded on 70 minutes when Town
took advantage of a mistake by John Paul Lewis in the Abbey Hey goal to double their
lead. Phil Mitchell won the ball in midfield and found Hanley on the left wing he gave the
ball back to Mitchell on the edge of the box and his shot was well save by Lewis the ball
broke to Hanley on the left and he sent the ball back into the danger area the keeper
looked to have it covered but dropped the cross and Scully was on hand to poke the loose
ball home. A few minutes later a surging run from Hanley appeared to be halted by foul
means inside the box but the well placed match referee awarded a free kick on the edge
of the area and Mitchell tested Lewis who turned the effort wide at full stretch. Town
ended the game in the ascendancy Dyson found Hanley who advanced and had his effort
blocked by Lewis the rebound fell to Marc Stephens but his effort was also blocked by a
fantastic challenge by the keeper. Hanley also has a shot just wide of the right hand upright and the striker linked with Scully who looking for his hat-trick beat a defender and
shot agonisingly wide of the upright. Town however had done enough to repel the
challenge of the visitors and secure all three points before a testing week when the teams
currently sitting in fourth and third places visit Knowsley Road.

Kings Lynn FC - High Court decision
Kings Lynn FC were wound up in the High Court on
Wednesday 25th November. The club's fixture
against Guiseley on Saturday 28th November did not
go ahead.
It is understood that the club intend to return to the
High Court within seven days to attempt to have the
winding up order rescinded. The UniBond League will not be making
any further announcement until the outcome of Kings Lynn's efforts to
have the order rescinded is known.
Durham City - Chairman steps down
Durham City’s long standing Chairman Stewart
Dawson has decided to relinquish control at the club
for business and personal reasons after nearly
twenty years at the helm. Stewart, once renowned
for his managerial revolving door policy, will remain
with the club in an advisory capacity.
During his tenure the club had the two most successful seasons in
their history winning back to back Northern League and UniBond First
Division North Titles before being hit with the withdrawal of their
major sponsor earlier this season culminating in the release of their
entire first-team squad.
As a result of Stewart’s resignation the club has been restructured
with Ian Walker becoming Chairman, while his fellow Directors Austin
Carney and Ian Coulson are joined by Jamie McAloon and Supporters
Club Chairman Terry Brown. Also joining the Board will be their
former Secretary Kevin Hewitt who will become the club’s first ever
Chief Executive with day to day responsibility for the club’s operation.
City’s new Board and its outgoing Chairman wish to pass on their
sincere thanks to both the current squad of young players and it’s
loyal group of fans who have stuck by the club through what has been
a very difficult period and are delighted to confirm that, despite their
current difficulties, they will not be seeking voluntary demotion and it
is their intention to compete in the UniBond League Premier League
for the 2010/11 season.

St. Helens Town in the Liverpool County Combination
Town supporters will know that our reserve team currently competes in the Liverpool County Combination, having re-entered this season, following a number of years’ absence. However, looking back further in history, the original St. Helens Town were members of the Combination as far back as 1914/15 season, alongside Burscough Rangers, Borough of Wallasey, Skelmersdale United, Widnes County, South Liverpool, Southport Park Villa, Clock Face, Earlestown Rovers and North Engineers. Records from that season, however, together with the other First World War years, are
incomplete. A team referred to as St. Helens Association competed in a five-team league in 1917/18. Emerging from the Great War, records are again hard to find, but a team called St. Helens Junction appear in the final table for 1921/22, finishing next to bottom in a 13-team competition, having played 24, won 6, drawn 2 and lost 16 games. Town’s history points to the club ceasing to function after 1923, but Liverpool County Combination official tables show a St. Helens Town team nearing the end of the 1926/27 season two off the
bottom of the league, having played 23, won 6, drawn 5 and lost 12 games. The table is said to be incomplete. The following season, 1927/28, saw St. Helens Town 7th of 11 clubs in the final table, having played 20, won 9, drawn 1 and lost 10 games. No other mention is found after that season, so more research is called for to
confirm the history of the club. The present club was re-formed in 1946 and having played friendly games at various venues in a truncated 1945/46 season, the club secured the Hoghton Road ground and entered the Liverpool County Combination ready for the 1946/47 campaign. The only

official table for that season shows only the top three placings, namely Liverpool “A”, Skelmersdale United and Burscough in that order. The First Division table for 1947/48 shows Town in 9th place, having played 34 games, won 13, drawn 8 and lost 13, goals for 83, against 80. The table is rather curious, as there are only 17 teams listed, whereas the number of
games played by all clubs suggests there were 18 teams competing that season. The following season, 1948/49 was Town’s last as members of the Liverpool County Combination, as they moved to the Lancashire Combination in 1949. Town ended the 1948/49 season in 7th place, having played 34 games, won 19, drawn 4 and lost 11, goals for 72, against 60. That season, the club won its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, defeating Runcorn in the final at Hope Street, Prescot. By happy coincidence, our reserves will be competing for the same trophy this season. Talking of the reserves, Town Reserves were members of the Liverpool County Combination between 1962/63 and 1973/74. Their record (where tables are available) is as follows:

Saints Alive . . . A man goes to see his doctor with pains in his leg. “My leg hurts
something shocking,” he says. The doctor takes his stethoscope,
presses it on the man’s thigh and hears the thigh say, “Doctor,
doctor, lend us eighty quid to pay me phone bill.” The doctor
looks up at the man with a puzzled expression, then places the
stethoscope on his knee and hears the knee say, “Doctor, doctor,
lend us seventy quid to pay me electricity bill.” The doctor again
looks up in silence, then places the stethoscope on the man’s
ankle and hears the ankle say, “Doctor, doctor, lend us five
hundred quid to pay me council tax demand.” The doctor looks
up and smiles. “Well, the problem appears to be self-evident,” he says. “So,
what’s up?” demands the man. “Your leg’s broke in three places,” replies the
doctor.
A few days after performing an operation, a surgeon calls at the patient’s
bedside and explains, “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but when I operated
on you I accidentally left one of my rubber gloves inside your abdomen. We’ll
have to open you up again to get it out.” The patient seems quite unconcerned
and replies, cheerily, “There’s no need to go to all that trouble, doctor. Here’s
a couple of quid – go out and buy yourself a new pair.”
Bob is a very slow worker and finds it difficult to hold down any job, but after a
number of visits to the Job Centre, he is offered a position at the local zoo.
When he arrives for his first day, the head keeper, aware of Bob’s reputation,
assigns him to take care of the tortoise section. Later in the day, the keeper
drops by to see how Bob is getting on, only to find him standing in an empty
enclosure. “Where are the tortoises?” demands the keeper, angrily. “I can’t
believe it,” says Bob. “I just opened the door and ..… whoosh!”
A baby camel turns to his father, who is the middle of eating some delicious
vegetation, and asks, “Daddy, why do we have such big humps?” “Well, Son,”
replies his dad. “They are full of fat to sustain us for long periods out in the
desert.” The baby camel then asks, “Why do we have such long eyelashes?”
His father explains they are to keep the swirling sand out of their eyes. “And
why do we have such large, padded feet?” persists the baby camel, so his
father patiently explains they are to stop them sinking into the soft desert
sand. Hoping he has satisfied the youngster’s curiosity, the father resumes his
meal. “So, Dad,” enquires his son. “What the hell are we all doing in London
Zoo?”
