Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this our first home game of the 2012/13 season in the North West Counties Football League, Premier League against our friends from AFC Liverpool. After an eventful post season Ian got his tenure at the helm off to the best possible start with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Colne at the XCLR Stadium on Saturday. Town got off to an early start as Ste Edwards opened his account for the season after 11 minutes after linking with Ash Rimmer before beating a defender and firing home. The visitors dominated possession for the vast majority of the rest of the half with Edwards heading against the crossbar before being caught with a sucker punch as Colne levelled with a thunderous shot prior to the interval. Playing up the hill is always a difficult task at Colne and add in the hot and humid conditions and a lot of informed observers will have been fancying a home win at the start of the second period but the visitors had different ideas and after soaking up some pressure they netted a late winner as Craig Fitzjohn rifled an effort home from the edge of the box to secure the first three points of the season. Onto this evenings visitors AFC Liverpool who themselves recorded a fine 2-1 victory on Saturday theirs being a home victory over a Silsden outfit who went unbeaten during the pre-season campaign. John Lawless had a busy afternoon netting twice for AFC Liverpool and also seeing red in the second half and managed to hold on to their lead in spite of the numerical disadvantage. Both sides will come into this evening’s contest high on confidence after their exploits on Saturday and so hopefully we are in for an exciting game tonight. Thinking ahead to Saturday we are back here at Edge Green Street as we kick off our FA Cup campaign with a difficult assignment against an Abbey Hey side who put seven past Holker Old Boys on Saturday, as always your support will be much appreciate for this important cup tie with the winners visiting Evo-Stick League Sheffield the worlds oldest club in the next round. In Town Today . . . AFC Liverpool was the brainchild of Liverpool FC fan Alun Parry, who was becoming increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for the Premiership club's matches. Early in 2008 he created a website and posted links to it on various forums, with the response being positive enough to move to the next stage and create a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008 AFC Liverpool

was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in response to the ownership issue at Anfield, more a reaction to issues at the top end of football in general. By May Derek Goulding, who steered Burscough to the 2nd round of the FA Cup in 2005-6, was appointed

manager and the following month the club arranged a groundshare with Prescot Cables and had been accepted into the Vodkat League. The club's first game was a 1-1 draw in a friendly with St Helens Town on 16th July 2008 and they began their inaugural league season extremely well, beating Darwen 5-0 in their first competitive game and going on a run of ten wins in the first 11 games. However they failed to keep this momentum going, with some off field troubles being coupled with a loss of form on the pitch and some key players leaving. The ship was steadied however although there was disappointment in May 2009 in missing out

on promotion to the premier division as the club eventually finished fourth. However victory in the final of the 1st Division Trophy over Padiham at Ashton Athletic provided some consolation. 2009-10 began with three successive victories but after this the Reds began to slip away and never looked like serious promotion contenders. An impressive victory at leaders Stone Dominoes at the end of January briefly put promotion in their own hands but after this they won just one of their next eight games and fell off the pace. After a 5-2 home defeat to Atherton Collieries on Easter Monday Derek Goulding left the club and ex assistant and goalkeeping coach Paul Moore returned as manager.. Under Moore's stewardship AFC had a strong end to the 2009-10 campaign, winning five out of their last seven league games to climb to fifth in the league and they also retained the 1st Division Trophy, coming from behind to beat Cheadle Town 2-1 in the final at Flixton.




. . . AFC Liverpool 2010-11 also began in promising fashion, the Reds going on a ten game unbeaten run after an opening day loss at AFC Darwen. However despite amassing their highest ever points total promotion never looked probable due to the outstanding form of AFC Blackpool and Runcorn Town and they finished 4th. There was disappointment too in the 1st Division Trophy when they reached the final only to lose to Atherton Collieries. In the FA Vase, steady progress was made to the 3rd round, where their dreams of Wembley were dashed by a 7-1 hammering at Whitley Bay, who would go on to claim a 3rd successive triumph. However at t h a t s u m m e r ’ s

AGM there was a pleasant surprise when Rossendale United were expelled from the league and Formby demoted to the 1st Division on a technicality. Holker Old Boys declined an invitation to take up a place in the premier division, meaning AFC Liverpool, who had finished fourth in the table, leapt at the chance that was offered to them. Having prepared for a season in the First Division of the NWCL the Valerie Park outfit struggled in the early stages of the 2011/12 season and found themselves bottom of the league. Their form took a massive turnaround with a mid-November 7-0 home win over Winsford United proving to be a fillip for the club as they put together an excellent run of results to drag the team away from danger and they ended up finishing in a more than respectable 19th position, 19 points clear of the relegation places.

A Word from the Dugout . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for our first home game of the 2012-13 season. May I firstly take the opportunity to welcome our opponents tonight AFC Liverpool who had a good result on Saturday with a 2-1 home win over Silsden. I hope they enjoy the game tonight . Tonight’s game is our second league game of the season and we fully expect it to be another tough encounter just like Saturday’s away game at Colne where we battled for a good 2-1 win with goals coming from Stephen Edwards and Craig Fitzjohn, the latter with a great strike to win us the game in the 88th minute; Craig also picked up the MOM award.

The lads worked tirelessly for the win and I for one was delighted with the team’s work rate and attitude .We have got a whole new squad for the season with almost every player leaving from last season so to put a performance on like we did after only really being together for the last 5 weeks is very encouraging for the season. Back to tonight’s opponents AFC Liverpool they are a team I have always kept a keen eye on being a massive Liverpool fan myself and a season ticket holder I think the idea of alternative cheaper football to watch was a great idea. Manager Paul Moore has done a fantastic job of keeping the team in the league after a really difficult start and we fully expect a really tough game from quality opposition. Their captain Ste Williams and striker John Lawless will be two players we will need to keep our eyes on. AFC will be looking to build on their good start to the season as will we if we have the same work rate and attitude as Saturday I am sure we can more than match tonight visitors. Ian Granite




A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our friends and neighbours AFC Liverpool. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and that we are all treated to an entertaining encounter. Well, were has the close season gone? It doesn’t seem two minutes since we were completing last season against Ashton Athletic! There’s lots happened over the summer break and although we avoided relegation as Flixton resigned from the league to join the Manchester Sunday League it was decided that we would part company with manager Jimmy McBride. After a protracted selection process we were delighted to welcome new manager Ian Granite and his management team of Stephen Edwards, John Wilkie, Paul Jones, Carl Osman and Ian Price. Ian joins having had a very successful spell with Wigan Robin Park. We also welcome a significant number of new players and hopefully we can look forward to a strong campaign. Of course the departure of any manager also means the departure of players and the majority of last season’s squad have sought pastures new - we offer our best wishes to them unless of course they form part of an opposition team. Our end of season presentation night saw Dylan Corrie pick up the Young Player of the Year while captain Michael Burns scooped the Player of the Year and prestigious Players’ Player of the Year award - we wish him well in the Evo-Stick with Prescot Cables.

Our new squad, containing only Brian Hatton and Dale Newbrook from the previous campaign, started with an excellent victory at Colne on Saturday. Stephen Edwards struck after 11 minutes following good work from the impressive Ash Rimmer and town dominated until just before the break when a thunderous strike gave Dale little chance. The second period was a little more even and Town took time to settle. The home side should have netted when a right wing cross found a Colne head but it went narrowly over the bar. Moments later Town should have been awarded a penalty but the referee appeared to play an advantage and Rimmer’s shot blasted wide. The win was secured just two minutes from time when ‘man of the match’ Craig Fitzjohn (picture opposite) blasted past the home stopper from the edge of the box. The club featured on WISH FM following Saturday’s game at Colne with Secretary Jeff Voller taking part in a post match interview as the local radio station looks to increase their coverage of non-league football. Our Reserve team will start their second season in the St Helens Football Combination top flight




under the stewardship of Steve Leather and Nick Robinson and they will be hoping their move to a new base at St Helens Cricket Club will be the start of a good season for the youngsters. The club is also delighted to welcome on board Rob Walker and Ant Dunne who will manage the club’s Youth side who have been accepted to play is the North West Youth Alliance Football League and will be based at Bobbies Lane Sport Complex. We will endeavour to bring you news, reports and photographs of both teams throughout the season and fixtures will also appear in our programme. I would also thank the large number of companies and individuals who have supported both the Reserves and Youth Team for the coming season. The Gorton based side should not be underestimated have finished last season strongly and last Saturday saw them run riot at Holker Old Boys, running out 0-7 winners in their opening league fixture! There’s £1000 prize money on offer for the winners who will also go on to travel to the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. Next Tuesday (as long as no FA Cup replay is required) we will entertain Premier Division new boys Norton United. All our fixtures, which are subject to change, are detailed in the centre pages of today’s programmes. Review of last Season . . . . . . and a look forward to this. Last season ranks among the worst in the club’s history and, but for the resignation of Flixton, who decided to join the Manchester Sunday League, St. Helens Town would have been relegated to the First Division of the North West Counties League, thereby losing their proud record of being the only club to have graced the League’s top flight since its creation 30 years ago. The pre-season preparations gave little hint of the struggles to come and, indeed an opening day 3-2 victory over eventual champions Ramsbottom United, was followed by a goalless draw at Atherton LR and wins at Colne and against tonight’s opponents AFC Liverpool to send Town to top of the table after the first two weeks. However, as the season progressed, Town went on an alarming slide to finish 21st of 22 clubs and having to rely on events elsewhere to retain the club’s Step 5 status. In fact, the victory at Colne was the only league victory gained away from Edge Green Street and Atherton LR eventually finished bottom to put that 0-0 draw into its proper context. Moreover, LR visited Edge Green Street before the end of August to knock Town out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle in the first of a series of poor home performances. As August gave way to September, Town’s disappointing run began to gain momentum with defeat at Squires Gate by the only goal in the opening round of the FA Vase leaving St. Helens out of both the FA’s prestigious competitions, without a penny of the sponsors’ prize money. After three wins in their opening four league fixtures, only three more victories were obtained in the remaining 38 games, to leave Town well adrift of league safety with a mere 26 points and relying on events out of their own control to salvage their position in the Premier Division. Away from league football, Town did manage to beat their hosts, Ashton Town, in the Liverpool Senior Cup – Andy Olsen netting a hat-trick – but their reward of a lucrative home tie with Everton proved somewhat disappointing as it was played on a night when England were live on the television and a crowd of less than 200 braved a cold November night. In the NWC League Cup, a good 1-0 win at Silsden in the Second Round led only to another battering away to Bootle. The only other league wins were gained at the expense of AFC Blackpool (despite finishing with only 9 men), Atherton LR and, quite unexpectedly, against high-flying Barnoldswick, that 4-2 win being perhaps the best performance of the season but, after that, the season could not end quickly enough. Prospects for 2012-13 are brighter, following a change of manager. Ian Granite joined the club in the close season, bringing in a new coaching team and a huge influx of new players. Whilst it is far too early to judge, with early momentum following on from an interesting pre-season schedule and a little luck, a mid-table finish would appear achievable. As for the Premier League as a whole, recent seasons has seen clubs promoted from the First Division do very well and AFC Fylde and New Mills have gained promotion. Last season’s promoted sides Wigan Robin Park and particularly Norton United will hope to finish among the front runners, as will the two Runcorn sides, Barnoldswick, Congleton and Glossop. Bootle have made good progress over the last few seasons and they may be favourites to follow Ramsbottom into the Evostik League. The re-named Stockport (formerly Woodley) Sports will be looking to bounce back to the Evostik with plenty of hype being created by over the close season with Peter With joining as manager and rumours of full time players in NWCFL. Following a slow start last season on their debut in the Premier Division, AFC Liverpool began to find their feet in the second half of last season and they may be one of the teams to watch. The East Lancashire clubs, in particular Bacup, struggle most from adverse weather conditions and resultant fixture backlogs; this could be their real challenge. GLYN JONES

A Brief History of St Helens Town . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.

Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that

league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for

Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue.

St Helens Town AFC . . . It will be remembered that the original St. Helens Town club was formed in

1901. What is less clear is how long the club survived. Some accounts state that Town folded in 1923, but research in the local press shows the club struggled on until at least 1928. St. Helens had two newspapers, the St. Helens Reporter and the St. Helens Newspaper, both of which published twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Fridays, until the mid-1950s. Between the wars, local sport was dominated by the town’s two professional Rugby League, St. Helens and St. Helens Recs. There was also a thriving local football competition in the St. Helens Combination. All three entities commanded most of the space on the sports pages in the 1920s and, as a consequence, very few column inches were

devoted to “Town Notes”. Town’s position was further squeezed from 1927 onwards, after rivals Prescot Cables were promoted mid-way through the season to replace Fleetwood in the Lancashire Combination and from that point onwards, the Cables were the principal local football club, Town appearing only occasionally in the local press. League tables featuring St. Helens Town appeared only once every few weeks in the local press for 1927/28 and 1928/29. Indeed, very few match reports appeared at all, so it is impossible to say definitively what matches were played and when the club finally ceased to function. “Town Notes” for 4th May 1928, under the heading “Will the Club continue?” provide interesting reading:

“The future of the Town club is very problematical. Some of the officials, feeling that the public have refrained from giving the club their necessary support during the last three seasons, have decided to retire. It is now a question whether or not there can be found a few enthusiasts with sufficient interest in Association Football to take their places. “Thanks to the generosity of a few friends, the club is less embarrassed financially than at any stage of its career so that, should anyone offer to come along and help run the club, they will have the benefit their predecessors have not enjoyed. Mr. T. Wall, 217 Derbyshire Hill Road, Parr, will be pleased to hear from anyone willing to take up office.”

The 1927/28 season saw the transfers of five star players: Fairhurst and Thomas had signed for Liverpool, although Thomas was placed with Runcorn to gain experience; Tunstall went to Aston Villa, via Prescot, Peachey signed for Bradford City and Bromilow joined Bolton Wanderers via Atherton. Nevertheless, the club’s finances were under pressure, as it was stated that in one home game that season, although four of these stars played, the gate was insufficient to cover the referee’s fee. The beginning of the 1928/29 season saw two trial games take place at Park Road and players were asked to meet at the club’s headquarters at the Black Horse. The opening game of the season in the Senior Division on 1st September, produced a draw against Bryn Celtic (no match report could be found). Manchester North End visited Park Road in the FA Cup on 15th September and, in a goalless game, Town were represented by: Milligan, Taylor, Gutteridge, Smith, Flaherty, Anders, Fairclough, Pilkington, Whitley, Aspinwall and




Middlehurst. The replay, at Blackley, four days later was described as a “scrappy game” which Town lost 3-4, goals coming from Middlehurst and Anders (2). That appears to be the last Town match report in the local press. Another league game was played that month, which was won, then there was a gap of several weeks until early November, when a game was lost and this appears to have been the last before the club folded. That sad event does not appear to have been worthy of even a mention in either of the local papers. Eighteen years on and, following the end of the Second World War, George Fryer and several other local businessmen, decided upon re-forming the Town club and acquired a lease of the former Sutton Cricket Club ground at Hoghton Road. Filled with undue optimism, the club was entered into the FA Cup but, drawn against Prescot Cables, they failed to fulfil the fixture. Embarking upon a different course, Town took over the Derbyshire Hill Rovers club in the St. Helens Combination during the 1946/47 season. Several of that team’s players formed the nucleus of the Town club, which joined the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. The first game, on 27th August, away to Prescot BI, resulted in a 0-0 draw. Town’s team was: Holmes, Jones, Gaskell, Burrows, Farrar, Jackman, Collins, Hughes, Dillon, Burke and Fairhurst. A crowd of around 2000 saw Town’s first home game the following Saturday, against Newton YMCA. The game finished 1-1, Boon scoring the first goal for the YMCA and Hughes opening Town’s account. The first win was obtained in the return game against Prescot BI on 3rd September, Town storming to a 4-0 success, thanks to goals from Collins, Fryer (2) and an own goal by Hobbs. The first season’s highlight was a sparkling 10-4 victory over Everton “A”. There were two goals apiece for Hughes, Pheasant, Northey, Burke and Gregory.

30 Years Ago - Where Were You in ‘82? On the eve of the League's 30th anniversary season, we are launching a search to compile a list of everyone who was involved in the NWCFL in some capacity both in 1982-83 and this coming season. There are many people around the league who can claim "I was there" in 1982 - but who are these people? What were they doing then and what are they doing now? Today we begin the hunt to try and find out. With everyone's help, the aim is to get a list together of every person holding an official position at a club or with the NWCFL this season, who was also involved in some way with the league when it all began in 1982. It's obviously a job that relies on contributions from all around the league, especially from anyone at those clubs who were founder members.

The criteria is simple - if you were involved in the league as a player, manager or an official in some capacity in 1982-83 and are still involved in 2012-13, or you know someone who fits the bill, we want to know about it. We want to highlight the many unsung long serving heroes around the league, and hear their memories of the early days. As a start point, we show below those individuals who are listed in positions of office in the new league handbook for 2012-13, who are also named in the handbook for the 1982-83 season. Colne v St Helens Town . . . Saturday 4th August 2012 NWCFL, Premier Division Colne 1-2 St Helens Town Ian Granite got his tenure as St Helens Town manager off to the best possible start with a hard fought victory at Colne’s XLCR Stadium this afternoon. The visitors got off to the best possible start to the game as they dominated the early exchanges threatening before eventually taking the lead on 11 minutes. An early chance saw skipper Carl Osman link with Ashley Rimmer who sent a dangerous cross into the area which Chris Thompson in the home goal had to turn behind. Ste Edwards was next to have a chance as he latched onto a long kick by Town custodian Dale Newbrook and Edwards collected the ball just inside the box before lobbing an effort over the advancing keeper but his effort went agonisingly wide of the right hand upright. Edwards made amends for this miss a couple of minutes later when he opened the scoring Rimmer again caused problems down the right wing and he fed the ball on the floor to Edwards who turned his defender before curling a shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net. The domination continued as Lee Crompton sent a cross in from the byline on the right which Edwards met with a powerful header which beat the keeper but struck the junction of post and crossbar and was cleared to safety. Further pressure saw Rimmer link with Andy Mawdsley on the right wing and his cross looked to pick out the Town attackers centrally but almost beat Thompson and the stopper had to tip the effort over the bar for a corner from which Chris Burke shot over the bar from the edge of the box. Much against the run of play the hosts levelled on 40 minutes when Dominic Craig was allowed too much space on the edge of the box and he made Town pay by firing a powerful shot home from the edge of the area. The momentum had shifted and the hosts looked dangerous and likely to add to their tally but the visitors managed to hold out and were grateful to hear the whistle for the interval. The second half was always going to be difficult for the visitors playing up the slope in the baking sunshine but the first chance of the half saw Scott McNair beat his marker and advance towards a 1on1 situation with the keeper as he bore down on goal he squared to Edwards when it seemed a better option to shoot and a recovering defender cleared the danger. Just after the hour mark Colne’s domination of the possession almost told when a ball over the top was misjudged by the Town backline




. . . Match Report and Photos and this allowed Paul Fildes to bear down on goal but his first touch was poor and this allowed Newbrook to close him down quickly and claim the ball. At the other end a Rimmer cross from the left had to be turned away by a defender and Craig Fitzjohn had an effort from the edge of the box sail over the bar. Town had Newbrook to thank for retaining parity as he denied Fildes in another 1on1 situation after a through ball had allowed the striker to get into the Town box and Burke was on hand to clear the loose ball. With five minutes of normal time remaining home goalscorer Craig did well on the right and sent a centre to the far post which Paul Coote rose to meet but he could only steer his headed effort over the bar. At the other end Town had a penalty shout turned down as Rimmer got into the area and was being pulled back by his shirt by his marker he was driven wide by this action and his effort went wide but the referee indicated the advantage had been played and a goal kick was awarded. The winning goal came with three minutes of normal time left as a free kick was sent towards the right of the Colne box by Mero Waugh and was chested down by Fitzjohn with his back to goal he turned and unleashed an unstoppable effort from the edge of the area which found the net and sent the Town supporters behind the goal wild. The game was not yet up as the visitors had to endure the final few minutes of normal time plus the added on period but the hosts could not muster any definitive threat and the first outing of the season saw the first victory collected. in Action St Helens Town Reserves pre-season continued with a 5-2 score line victory over local team Brown Edge FC last Saturday. Town took an early 4minute lead through trialist Jack West with a neat header but players still looked rusty for most spells in the first half in what was their second pre-season game and this resulted in an equalising goal for the visitors after some slack defending at the back. Just before half time the visitors took a surprising lead after suspicious off side decision went against them and it meant a 1-2 reverse going into the break. A number of changes at half time and a change in formation then brought the best of the squad and in the second half it was really one way traffic for Town, only glimpses of chances noticeably a one on one save from new recruit Ross Booth in the town goal. Second half goals from Ryan Johnson, Jay Morley, Neil Tabern and particularly pleasing a well taken goal from 16yr old Taf Mondiah. Steve and Nick were pleased with a good run out for the squad, giving both fitness and ball work to the test, in additionally pleased with the spread of goals from a number of players. Town Reserves continue pre-season preparations next Saturday 11th August when they will play Sumner Street FC at the St Helens Cricket Club ground, kick off 1.00pm




North West Counties Club News . . . New Sponsorship Deal for Silsden Silsden AFC have announced a new sponsorship deal with Bradford-based Angel Telecom. The firm, an independent telecoms business with over 25 years' experience and an established presence in the Bradford business community, have agreed to be the Cobbydalers’ major club and ground sponsor for the next five years, during which time the ground will be known as The Angel Telecom Stadium. Angel Telecom’s support is not new to the club. They have sponsored the first team kit since 2010 and, over the past few months, Angel have not only sponsored race nights but also training kits for the under 16`s on their ventures into the European junior cup competition in Barcelona the last two summers. The three directors have strong links with the area. Managing Director Stuart Hudson has more than a small connection with the area, having lived in Steeton and played for Steeton Cricket Club and still turns his arm in the Airedale and Wharfedale Cricket League. Stuart’s son, Chris, broke into the senior side last season and will hopefully have a part to play in this season’s campaign. Fellow directors, Johann Shepherd and Daniel Farmer live in Silsden and Daniel has a child playing for Silsden Juniors. Johann’s two sons’ first love is karate but the family will be down at the ground on Saturdays. Stuart Hudson said: “Sponsorship agreements are vital to keep local teams in action which really helps support the game at a grass roots level. Silsden AFC enjoys a lot of local interest with followers from all different age groups who come from far and wide to cheer their team on.

Paul’s successful Marathon Effort Alsager Town central defender Paul Bowyer is now preparing for the start of the season after completing five marathons in five days in aid of charity. Paul and five companions reached the end of a gruelling effort on Thursday 26th July at 4.30 p.m. Their run started out the previous Sunday at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Hospital and finished at the Birmingham Childrens’ Hospital. As reported previously on the league website, Paul and his fellow runners undertook the challenge to raise money in aid of three charities. Paul’s motivation for undertaking the runs was to raise funds for the

charities that have supported his 3 year old niece, Georgia, who has leukaemia and his 4 year old nephew, Charlie, who has type 1 diabetes. The three cahrities who will benefit from Paul and his companions' efforts are CLIC Sargent, Ronald McDonald House Charities and JDRF. CLIC Sargent is a charity which supports families from the point when a child is diagnosed with cancer, and helps the whole family cope with the impact of cancer and its treatment. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is an independent Charity which aims to provide free ‘home away from home’ accommodation at hospitals across the UK, enabling families to stay close to their child and maintain a degree of normal family life. JDRF exists to find the cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications, and is the world's leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research. North West Counties Club News . . . Saxon Skipper sets Target If pre-season form is anything to go by then Raphale Evans is set to be an important player for Stockport Sports this coming season. Evans, known as Raph and described as 'a beast of a player' by his manager, ex-England international Peter Withe, has produced an outstanding performance in each pre-season game so far this summer, and as the team continues to gel even further, the concern for opposition strikers is that Evans will get even better. At just 22 years of age, central defender or left-back Evans has significant

experience for one so young and can count a number of highly regarded managers among those he has worked under. Andy Preece, Andy Morrison, Vince Overson and Chris Beech are all fairly big names on the local football scene and Evans has experience working under all of them. His current manager Peter Withe has been very impressed with Evans during the short time they have worked together so far. “He is huge in stature and in character. I have been impressed by his physique and his physical ability. He is quick for a big man. Another quality of Raph's is the way he talks to the other squad players. He has presence, he has experience and the other lads respond to him”. For Raph himself, he is enjoying the experience of working with the Saxons’ manager. “Working with the gaffer has been good. He's had us buying into his way of thinking early on, which can only be a good thing. The sessions have been spot on and they seem to be effective, hence the results pre-season”. Looking ahead to the coming season, the Saxons skipper is setting his targets high. “I run the risk of coming across as though I'm underestimating the North West Counties League here, but with the players and coaching staff we have, anything but automatic promotion would be failure for the club. I expect every game to be a battle, the team that's willing to work harder will win. “I can't wait to get on the way with the season, to put what we've learnt into practice and showcase our talent as a team to the league, as well as playing in the big cups the FA Cup and the Vase”.
