Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Stockport Sports. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. After a hectic run of eight matches in the month of October we have then had almost a month off as we have been hit by the postponement of two matches, the visit to Bacup & Rossendale Borough on Saturday 2nd November and hosting AFC Blackpool the following week as they both fell foul of waterlogged pitches. We then lost the scheduled midweek home contest against Winsford United as an earlier Cheshire County Cup postponement saw their tie rearranged for the same evening and take precedence over the league game and we were also inactive last weekend as we had exited the FA Vase at the first hurdle.

The last game we took part in was here at Brocstedes Park against Barnoldswick Town and it certainly was a game of two halves as we started off brightly and took an early lead when Andy Gillespie extended his great goal scoring run adding an eight goal in eight matches. We continued the pressure as the first half continued but failed to turn the dominance into further return and the visitors came more into the contest levelling prior to the interval. The second half saw the conditions put paid to flowing football as the rain continued and made the pitch heavy and reduced the chances of a

passing game being played to virtually nil. The change in conditions suited the visitors more than the hosts but both team had their chances to take all three points with Gillespie’s effort blocked by the keeper and Mike Sykes-Wright unable to steer the loose ball home. The visitors manager had the best chance to ensure Barlick took all the points but Shaun Judge got in a vital challenge to avert the danger and the spoils were shared. We also found out during the early stages of this month that we had been awarded the points from the abandoned Silsden game which we were leading 2-0 in when the game was halted in the 86th minute. Congratulations must also got to stopper Ciaran Gibson who was awarded the Premier Division’s goalkeeper of the month award for October and also Andy Gillespie who scoring feats during the month of October saw him top the polls in the clubs Player of the Month award and as a result he will get to drive the Toyota of his choice for a week. Whilst we have been inactive Ian has had the lad’s running through their paces with regular training sessions and a couple of practice matches last Tuesday against Digmoor and this week against Prescot Cables and in the middle plenty of first teamers had a run out against the Manchester City Past Players in the Bert Trautmann Memorial game last Sunday at Valerie Park. In Town Today . . . The club were established in 1970 as Woodley Athletic, and it’s name was changed to Woodley Sports during its time in the Manchester League. Woodley Sports won the Manchester League Division One title in 1992. The following year saw Woodley both win the Gilchrist Cup and took the Premier Division Runners-up spot. Work to enclose the ground began in 1996–97, and Woodley’s application to join the North West Counties League was accepted. By this time, the management team of John Imrie and Gary Lowe had been introduced. Both had played at the highest levels for professional and semi-professional clubs such as Manchester City, Crystal

Palace, Macclesfield and Runcorn. During the 1997–98 season Woodley set a North West Counties League record, when Peter Carty scored seven goals in a league game against Blackpool Mechanics. Carty was also Woodley’s leading scorer that season, netting 35 goals. Woodley also scored a record 102 league goals that season. During the summer of 1998 Woodley began work on its biggest project to date, the installation of floodlights, enabling it to enter the FA Vase, Cheshire Senior Cup, North Western Trans Floodlit Cup and the FA Cup. The 1999–2000 season saw the club’s first ever FA Cup Match against reigning NCEL champions Ossett Albion, which resulted in a 2–1 victory for the Steelmen. The continued work of the club was rewarded that season when they won the Second Division championship on goal difference from Curzon Ashton, winning 12 of their last 13 matches and drawing the other to take its place in the top flight of the North West Counties League. The 2000–01 and 2001–02 seasons saw the club consolidate itself in the top half of the NWCFL First Division, with its reserve team winning a double championship in 2002; it won the Reserve Division title for the second consecutive year and the Reserve Cup. The season finished with work beginning on a new 200-seat stand, which was due to be finished for the 2002–2003 season. The 2003–2004 was Woodley’s greatest to date. It won the Cheshire FA Senior Cup, beating Witton Albion in the final. The FA restructuring of the football pyramid allowed Woodley to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League by finishing fourth in the league. The 2004–05 season saw Woodley Sports compete in the NPL Division One finishing 11th and reaching the final of theChairman’s Cup. Off the pitch the club obtained the support of two local businessmen, who worked with the club on £3.5 million development of the site. Phase one was the installation of a synthetic surface in July 2005. The 2005–06 season saw Woodley finish in their highest NPL position (finishing fourth, gaining an automatic playoff place), only to lose against Gresley Rovers. During that season, they sold striker Liam Dickinson to Stockport County for £200,000. A youth team was introduced; the previous squad moved up to become the reserve team, competing in the Lancashire League. 2006–07 was disappointing by contrast with a 10th-place finish; however, the season was notable for cup successes in major competitions at Conference North, Leigh RMI in the FA Cup and Moor Green in the FA Trophy. Home successes were gained against Marine and Whitby Town. However, they were defeated 8–7 on a penalty kick s in the League President’s Cup semi final at Premier League side Matlock, despite playing over an hour with 10 men. During the 2008–09 season, the team finished 13th in the Northern Premier League Division One North. Disappointing news was given to Woodley Sports when the administration of Stockport County was announced. Woodley were owed £150,000 from Stockport County for the sale of Liam Dickinson, and this shortfall put the club's future in



. . . Stockport Sports doubt. However 18 year old Anthony Sarcevic was sold to Crewe Alexandra for an undisclosed fee. He came through the ranks of Woodley Sports and manager Trevor MacFarlane had given him the chance of first team football in September of that season . In the2011–12 season they were demoted to the North West Counties Football League Premier Division for ground grading reasons. The 2012/2013 season saw a new chapter in the life of Woodley Sports FC. The club under went a complete makeover which saw them benefit from full-time status, a new management team and even a new name. Stockport Sports FC will be born and their first leader will be Aston Villa legend Peter Withe. Withe had, had managerial experience in the of Wimbledon, Thailand and Indonesia. Another change saw the club changing of their nickname, Woodley Sports were affectionately known as “The Steelmen” but the new regime will see the Club being referred to as The Saxons. The nickname pays homage to the rich Saxon heritage of Stockport and pays tribute to those who named the town in the 18th Century. Despite all the changes perhaps overwhelming some, Stockport Sports will not neglect the community in its bid to become a major non-league side in the future. The Neil Rourke Stadium will boast a gymnasium which will be open for the public to use and the Stockport Sports Trust are also investing significant amounts of money to bring more full size and 5-a-side pitches to the community of Stockport in the hope that Stockport Sports can become a source of pride for a local community, as well as a blossoming football club. The new boss did not last long as in November 2012 Withe tendered his resignation to the board and now continues with various media roles outside of the club. The lofty ambitions of the club were not fulfilled in their first season back in the North West Counties League after an good start they began to drift down the table and finished in a disappointing 16th position, they also had three points deducted for playing ineligible players which impacted upon their final finishing position. This term has seen the club have three men at the helm already with Stuart Finch starting the season in the hot seat before moving upstairs to become Director of Football and Stuart Rudd taking over the managerial reigns. Rudd however then moved to Salford City as assistant to Phil Power and Asa Crowe took over with his first match being the victory at Glossop North End at the end of October.

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Stockport Sports. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own

followers are treated to an entertaining game. It’s been a few weeks of inactivity with the postponement of planned games against Bacup, AFC Blackpool and Winsford United, along with the absence of a game last Saturday due FA Vase ties. There have been a couple of friendly/practice matches against Digmoor FC (W1-0) and Prescot Cables (L0-1) both on the JMO Astroturf at Skelmersdale which have allowed Ian Granite to keep the team on their toes. Today’s visitors earned an excellent 2-3 win at in-form Alsager Town last Saturday with goals from Tom Bane (2) and Max Thomas. Prior to this the Saxons had suffered to narrow defeats at home to league leaders Runcorn Town (1-2) and away at AFC Blackpool (2-1). There’s no doubt both teams will be looking to take the spoils with the middle of the Premier Division table looking quite congested - just seven points separating 7th to 17th place! Congratulations to Andy Gillespie who has been voted the club’s Player of the Month for October - he will be treated to the Johnsons Toyota Liverpool VI treatment and a car of his

choice for a week! To add to the October success on the field Ciaran Gibson was award the NWCFL Premier Division Goalkeeper of the Month award following an excellent start to his Town career. Town v Barlick Town . . . Tuesday 29th October 2013 St Helens Town 1-1 Barnoldswick Town NWCFL Premier Division

St. Helens Town had to settle for a hard-earned point in a 1-1 draw with Barnoldswick at Brocstedes Park last Tuesday, but stretched their unbeaten run to 10 league games and consolidated their eighth place position in the NW Counties Premier Division table in the process.

On another stormy evening, the rains abated as the teams entered the arena and the wet surface initially made for a fast game, with the ball zipping across the glistening pitch. Town made the most of these conditions and took the lead on 11 minutes, Nathan Parish’s crisp pass finding Andy Gillespie at the left hand post, where he beat the Barlick keeper, Daniel Thorpe, comprehensively, scoring his eighth goal in seven matches following promotion from Town’s reserve team. St. Helens Town were well on top for the majority of the half and only a number of heavy challenges kept the home team’s forwards at bay. Adam Storey had the chance to double the lead with a fine strike on 25 minutes, but a defender got in a tremendous tackle to block the effort. As the first half progressed, the rainwater began to soak into the surface and the now-heavy pitch played much more to the visitors’ liking. Returning captain Lee Crompton blocked a great chance, taking the ball off the toes of Neil Stansfield with four minutes to go to the break but, soon afterwards, with the St. Helens defence stretched, Kieran Lee struck the ball through a crowded penalty area past Ciaran Gibson in the home goal to level the scores at one-all. The second half was a real battle in the heavy conditions, neither keeper having a great deal to do. Perhaps the best chance fell to Michael Sykes-Wright when, with 15 minutes remaining, he followed up a shot from Gillespie only to find Thorpe in the visitors’ goal and his effort was touched round the post. With the match heading towards the final whistle, Shaun Judge got in a great tackle to take the ball off the toes off subtitute Paul Fildes as the former Runcorn Linnets and Padiham shaped to shoot and it was Judge to the rescue again with another well-timed challenge to thwart the Barnoldswick attack in the final move of the game.

The original St. Helens Town were members of the Liverpool County Combination as far back as 1914/15 season, alongside Burscough Rangers, Borough of Wallasey, Skelmersdale United, Widnes County, South Liverpool, Southport Park Villa, Clock Face, Earlestown Rovers and North Engineers. Records from that season, however, together with the other First World War years, are incomplete. A team referred to as St. Helens Association competed in a five-team league in 1917/18. Emerging from the Great War, records are again hard to find, but a team called St. Helens Junction appear in the final table for 1921/22, finishing next to bottom in a 13-team competition, having played 24, won 6, drawn 2 and lost 16 games. Town's history points to the club ceasing to function after 1923, but Liverpool County Combination official tables show a St. Helens Town team nearing the end of the 1926/27 season two off the bottom of the league, having played 23, won 6, drawn 5 and lost 12 games. The table is said to be incomplete. The following season, 1927/28, saw St. Helens Town 7th of 11 clubs in the final table, having played 20, won 9, drawn 1 and lost 10 games. No other mention is found after that season. The present club was re-formed in 1946 and having played friendly games at various venues in a truncated 1945/46 season, the club secured the Hoghton Road ground and entered the Liverpool County Combination ready for the 1946/47 campaign. The only official table for that season shows only the top three placings, namely Liverpool A, Skelmersdale United and Burscough in that order. The First Division table for 1947/48 shows Town in 9th place, having played 34 games, won 13, drawn 8 and lost 13, goals for 83, against 80. The table is rather curious, as there are only 17 teams listed, whereas the number of games played by all clubs suggests there were 18 teams competing that season. The following season, 1948/49 was Towns last as members of the Liverpool County Combination, as they moved to the Lancashire Combination in 1949. Town ended the 1948/49 season in 7th place, having played 34 games, won 19, drawn 4 and lost 11, goals for 72, against 60. That season, the club won its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup (pictured), defeating Runcorn in the final at Hope Street, Prescot. St Helens Town Reserves were members of the Liverpool County Combination between 1962/63 and 1973/74. Town in the Combination



A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last

season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final,

despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access

AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place public-access AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story. “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and

Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny possible for the campaign.”

St Helens Town Reserves It’s been a busy few weeks for the Reserves with both League and Cup action. Two successive league victories against Belfry (0-4) and in form Capenhurst Villa has seen the Reserves take back top spot in the West Cheshire League Division Three. The lads will be hoping to consolidate their place as they visit bottom club Upton AA Reserves. The club will be hoping to appoint a new Reserve Team manager this week following the recent departure of Nick Robinson.

In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall

(pictured below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough

having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued

throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - present Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division.

Trautmann Tribute . . . The Bert Trautmann Memorial game between St. Helens Town and Manchester City last Sunday at Prescot Cables’ Valerie Park ground was a fitting tribute to the former German goalkeeping legend, who began his career with St. Helens Town 65 years ago. He died in July, at the age of 89 years, but members of his family, supported by former team mates from both clubs joined a crowd of over 400 for a memorable game of football, played in the best spirits of the game. Both teams and officials joined Bert’s family and the Mayor of St. Helens, Andy Bowden, in a minute’s silence in memory of the great man, the mark of respect extended also to former Saints’ legend Steve Prescott. The kick-off was performed by Bert Trautmann’s understudy, Steve Fleet. For the record, St. Helens Town ran out 5-4 winners in an open contest. Both teams were supported by several guest players. Town’s goals were scored by current centre-forward Adam Storey, who netted twice, and former Accrington Stanley manager, John Coleman, who scored three, also taking the man-of-the-match award. Town raced into a 4-0 lead, Coleman ably supporting the home side’s youthful attack. Former City goalkeeper, Eric Nixon, pulled off two great saves from Storey inside the first ten minutes, but he had no chance when Storey crossed for Coleman to open the scoring on the quarter-hour. Four minutes later, Jimmy Bell put Storey clear 40 yards out and he netted the second, despite Nixon’s best efforts. A few minutes later, Storey scored his second, when he mopped up a loose ball close home, but the goal of the game came on 32 minutes. Ste Milne was unceremoniously blocked off the ball by Andy Morrison and Coleman scored a beautiful free kick from 40 yards out. Even Trautmann in his prime would not have saved that one. Young Ciaran Gibson in the home goal turned in a faultless display in the first half to keep City’s old boys at bay. Unfortunately, Gibson played the second half up front and Town Secretary Jeff Voller deputised between the sticks. Whether he was instructed to let City back into the game will remain a mystery, but he was beaten four times as City fought back with goals from Andy Morrison (2), Steve Redmond and Town’s own Danny Owens, but Town ran out 5-4 winners thanks to Coleman’s third goal. Eric Nixon’s son, Eric junior, had a great second half in the City net and there were good contributions throughout from Neil Pointon, Peter Barnes and Andy Reid. Net proceeds from the match will be divided between three charities, namely Hearts and Goals, the Bert Trautmann Foundation and the Mayor of St. Helens’ designated charity, the Saints Community Development Foundation.

Back to Business . . . Well it is finally back to league action today after what seems like an eternity without a competitive game. With our last three fixtures postponed due to the poor weather and no competitive game since 29th October, the lads would have been a little rusty but for a couple of hastily arranged mid season friendlies to help keep the legs ticking over. Away from competitive action, last Sunday saw the club host a star studded Manchester City Past Players XI at Valerie Park, Prescot for the Bert Trautmann Memorial game. It was a fabulous day for all concerned and a fitting tribute to our legendary former player and club president. City fielded a side which included well known names like Peter Barnes, Eric Nixon, Andy Morrison, Steve Redmond, and Neil Pointon as well as bringing along a number of familiar faces in an ambassadorial capacity including the esteemed Life President Bernard Halford MBE and legendary former stars Tommy Booth, Alex Williams MBE and Steve Fleet, and you could not wish to meet a nicer group of gentlemen. There were also a few “ringers” turning out for Town in the charity fundraiser including former Accrington and Rochdale boss John Coleman who stole the show with a world class free kick, and came away with a hat-trick and the man of the match accolade. Thanks also go to Chesterfield Manager Paul Cook, Port Vale Under 21 Boss Jimmy Bell and Former QPR and Swansea striker Karl Connolly who all supported the club by turning out in the red and white stripes. The highlight of my day was being able to meet and chat with Bert’s family including his son Mark and his daughter Freda as well as Mrs Marion Greenall, Freda’s mother and Bert’s former love, who told some wonderful stories and still holds so much affection for the great man. It is an event the club will always be proud of and it will live with me forever. Back to today though and as well as today’s fixture its non stop off the pitch too as we immediately beginning planning of further club events.
