Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Liverpool Senior Cup 2nd Round Tie against Skelmersdale United. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us at our new home, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. It has been almost three weeks since we have played here at Edge Green Street and the two away cup matches we have played in this period have seen us advance in both the Vodkat League Cup having secured a 2-1 extra time victory over Alsager thanks to goals from Liam Pearson and Iain Dyson. We also reached the Third Round of the FA Vase for the first time since 2004 with an excellent 2-0 win at Winterton Rangers with Pearson and Mike Kavanagh getting the goals at the weekend. We have been rewarded with a trip to AFC Blackpool in the Third Round of the League Cup and will travel to Holbrook Sports FC of the East Midlands Counties Football League Premier Division who are located north of Derby on Saturday 4th December 2010. This evening’s contest will be a difficult one as our opponents were beaten finalists in this competition last term, the final was actually played in July with Liverpool coming away with the spoils after a 3-2 victory. Skem’ will be high on confidence after an 8-0 home thrashing of Cammell Lairds on Saturday with all the goals coming in the second half of the contest. There may well be a few names on the visitors team sheet that ring a bell as Andy Paxton and more latterly Karl Ledsham have turned out for Town. Both sides will know the importance of a win in this evening’s contest, which has to be settled on the evening with extra time and penalties if required as a match against one of the “big boys” could be in the offing at the quarter final stage of the competition. Both squads will be looking to build on their respective weekend victories with Town looking to end their three match cup period by securing a hat-trick of victories and putting our name in the hat for the quarter-finals for the first time since the 1993/94 season. Lets get behind the lads this evening and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Enjoy the Game . . . Jeff Voller

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Liverpool Senior Cup 2nd Round encounter with our friends from Skelmersdale United FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own ‘home’ support are treated to an entertaining game! We’ve been on the road for the past couple of weeks since our 1-0 home victory over Glossop North End here at Edge Green Street - Town completed the league ‘double’ over our Derbyshire rivals courtesy of a great finish from Iain Dyson. Ten days ago the lads made it through to the 3rd Round of the League Challenge Cup with a 2-1 extra time win at Alsager Town - Liam Pearson and Iain Dyson were on target. Last Saturday saw Town make the long journey to Winterton Rangers (just outside Scuntthorpe) and return with a fantastic 0-2 victory and a place in the 3rd Round of the competition. A goal on 20 minutes from Liam Pearson settled some early nerves and despite some pressure from the home side Town made it 2-0 with a Mike Kavanagh header with ten minutes to go (full match report elsewhere in the programme). Town’s reward for the win is a trip to Holbrook Sports FC of the East Midlands Counties Football League Premier Division which appears to be the same level as the Vodkat League Division One. While they may currently hold a mid-table position they did record a 7-0 victory against Holwell Sports in last Saturday’s 2nd Round Vase tie! Tonight’s visitors are currently flying high in the Evo-Stick Division One North - Tommy Lawson’s side currently occupy second place six points behind leaders Chester FC but with two games in hand - the pair meet at Chester this coming Saturday for what should be a cracker!! The last time the two teams met in the Senior Cup was back in 2004 when Town recovered from 3-0 down to record a remarkable 4-3 victory at Knowsley Road. Let’s hope for some similar entertainment tonight as both teams go in search of one of the ‘big guns’ at the quarter final stage. In Town Today . . . Skelmersdale United Football Club has a very rich pedigree with an extensive list of honours since they were founded in 1882. Looking back to when the club was founded, in 1882, their early successes were as members of the Liverpool County Combination, which they competed in until 1955, during which time they were Champions on 10 occasions, Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup Winners on 8 occasions and George Mahan Cup Winners 5 times. For the majority of their first seventy years the club played at Sandy Lane that is now the site of an office block. The Sandy Lane ground had a deceiving slope and was one of the biggest playing areas in non-league football.

For the 1955-56 season the club moved into the 2nd Division of the Lancashire Combination, and in their 1st season they lifted the Championship. The most successful period for the club was between 1966-67 and 1970-71 seasons, which included two Wembley appearances in the Amateur FA Cup in 1967 Enfield beat Skem 3-0 in a replay & 1971 United triumphed 4-1 against Dagenham with centre forward Ted Dicken scoring a hat trick. The cup final of 1967 attracted a massive 75,000, with the 1971 final also attracting a large 42,000 gate. There is no doubt that the 1967-1971 period was a golden era for Skelmersdale. Indeed the clubs record gate of 7,500 came in this period for a Amateur Cup quarter final tie in March 1967 that resulted in a 1-0 victory over Slough Town. The club also saw many players progressing into the Football League including most famously Steve Heighway, who gained an International Cap with the Republic of Ireland whilst he was still playing for the club. Following the highly successful Amateur Cup era the club decided to progress into the professional ranks and moved into the Northern Premier League for the 1971-72 season. Whilst the first three years in the Northern Premier were reasonable, the club found the overheads increasingly difficult to sustain and a decision was taken to return to the Lancashire Combination for the 1976-77 season where the club stayed until 1982 when the North West Counties League was formed. Skelmersdale United were placed into Division Two of the NWCL and reached the inaugural League Challenge Cup Final, losing in a replay to Darwen. In 1987 the NWCL was restructured as many sides left the league to join the Northern Premier. This saw the club promoted to the NWCL First Division. However, United had mixed fortunes in the 1st Division and following three seasons of just avoiding relegation to the 2nd Division in the early 90’s, the inevitable happened at the end of the 1995-96 season At the close of the 1996-97 season the club restructured, with a new Management Committee and the astute appointment of the vastly experienced Russ Perkins as Manager. Russ quickly assembled a squad of players who regained United its 1st Division status at the end of his first season. Further progress was made on and off the field, with improvements being made to Whitemoss Park, including new changing rooms. On the playing side United went from strength to strength, finishing regularly in the top half of the table and winning the League Challenge Trophy in May 2000, which was their first major trophy since lifting the Amateur FA Cup & the Anglo Italian Cup in 1971. Russ Perkins was replaced as Manager by his then assistant Paul Gallagher towards the end of the 2001-02 season, and the following season United established their highest ever finish in the League when they came

. . . Skelmersdale United 5th A major development announced in October 2002 was the club’s decision to pursue relocation to a new stadium on the Stanley Industrial Estate which is approximately 1.5 miles from Whitemoss Park. Meanwhile United went on to ground share with local rivals Burscough until their new stadium was completed. In a difficult season at Victoria Park, United lose their opening 5 league games yet still manage to finish the season in 8th place with only three defeats in their last 18 games, and Stuart Rudd bags 39 goals despite carrying several injuries throughout the campaign. The 2004/05 season saw the club move to the new 'Westgate Interactive Stadium' but not before a hiccup as their opening game is put on hold until Tuesday 21st September 2004 due to technical hitches with the new stadium. One of the problems being the pitch that would eventually be the cause of greater problems as the season unfolded. United's great start to the season saw them have 12 match unbeaten run spoilt by Burscough in front of 1,002 people in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. Pitch problems saw the club play their final 4 fixtures at Burscough & Formby. Pitch problems did not stop Skem reaching the Semi Finals of the Lancs Trophy and the final of the NWCL Cup and a 6th placed finish was secured. 2005/6 saw Skem win half of their 42 league matches and finish in 6th position before the following term saw them lead the league from the opening day until their very final game of the season, but with games in hand Cammell Laird took the honours. Fortunately with the restructuring of football at step four, United after an absence of 30 years gain promotion to the Northern Premier League as runners-up. That season also saw Stuart Rudd brake Tommy Tindsley’s all-time goalscoring record which had stood since 1948 at 214 goals, to set a new record that now stands at 230 goals in 315 games. There was a change in the hot seat as Gallagher was replaced by Tommy Lawson prior to the beginning of their first season back in the NPL. United Consolidate their position in the Unibond as they finish in 15th place despite all the rebuilding, as Lawson went about restructuring the playing staff. Their second season at the higher level saw United finished third in the newly formed Unibond Division One North, they just missed out on promotion as FC United of Manchester beat them 4-1 in the play-off final at Gigg Lane, Bury in front of 3,258 people. They marched all the way to the Unibond League Challenge Cup Final, beating four teams from the higher division before finally succumbing to Premiership opposition in the shape of Eastwood Town. The 2008-09 was arguably Skem’s finest season since the halcyon days of the late 60’s and early 70’s. After valiant efforts in the Unibond Challenge Cup and the Unibond Presidents Cup, in which they fell at the semi-final stage. They won the Lancashire Challenge Trophy with a 2-1 extra-time defeat of Radcliffe Borough indeed it was United’s first piece of winning silverware in nine years. On the league front United finished just one point behind eventual champions Durham City in the Unibond Division One North, and despite finishing some 13-points ahead of the rest of the field in the runners-up spot they eventually lost to Curzon Ashton at home in the play-off semi-final. The season saw the departures of Sean McConville (Accrington Stanley) and Georgie Donnelly (Plymouth Argyle). Last term once again United qualified for the play-offs after a long, tough season, but again they ran out of steam at the semi-final stage when bowing out to Lancaster City 2-0. Cup success eluded them as well as they bowed out of the Unibond Presidents Cup at the semi final stage. They did however go one better with a victory over Everton in the Liverpool Senior Cup semi final but were eventually beaten by Liverpool in a final that was played during in July 2010.

Match Report Saturday 13th November 2010 ; FA Vase, 2nd Round Winterton Rangers 0-2 St Helens Town 0-1; Liam Pearson 20 Minutes, 0-2; Mike Kavanagh 82 Minutes. Town advanced to the third round of the FA Vase for the first time since 2004 with a fantastic performance at both ends of the park against a well drilled Winterton Rangers side. The visitors settled into the excellent surroundings at West Street well and after an initial period with the two sides feeling each other out St Helens started to create chances. After 11 minutes of the contest Liam Pearson spotted an opening with home stopper Jack Ward off his line and attempted a lob from 25 yards out the goalkeeper however recovered well to spare his blushes. Moments later Pearson was again in the action as he was released by Marc Stephens on the left hand edge of the area his curled effort however was held by Ward. The pressure was starting to tell as Pearson turned his marker on the left wing looked to find Stephens on the penalty spot but a well time interception from Danny Smith. The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes when Mike Fargher caught Smith in possession and advanced before centring towards hotshot Pearson who made no mistake applying a great finish to give Town a deserved lead. Winterton reacted well to going behind as they went on the offensive Darren Fell collected a through ball and got into a dangerous position but his shot was blocked by a fine slide by Luke Faulkner. At the other end Iain Dyson collected a through ball and cut it back towards Pearson in a central position but good defending by Craig Robinson saw the attack thwarted. With the half hour mark approaching a half clearance fell to NCEL top scorer Liam Wilkin on the edge of the box and he chested the ball down before volleying over the bar. Wilkin looked lively and but for another fine piece of defending by Faulkner he could have levelled matters. A series of right wing corners from the hosts caused some problems in the Town box with the final set piece seeing a melee ensue with the ball somehow ending up just wide of the right hand post. The lead could have been doubled on 40 minutes as Dyson took advantage of a mistake by Smith to bear down on goal but a poor touch saw Ward seize the opportunity to claim the loose ball. The second half saw the hosts start fast creating two good chances in the opening three minutes of the half Danny Barlow won the ball on the left wing and advanced goalwards before unleashing an effort that Dale Newbrook got down well to block the rebound fell to Robinson and he could not keep his effort down firing over the bar. Moments later Liam Slack intercepted a Town pass and his effort from the edge of the box was pushed around the post by Newbrook. Town then had a great chance to net as Ward made a mess f what looked like a routine clearance just outside the area and Pearson was able to collect it he rounded a defender who drove him wide before lofting an effort that beat the recovering stopper but struck the top of the crossbar and going behind. Newbrook was again responsible for preserving the visitors lead when he got down well to hold a free kick from Fell on the right hand edge of the box. Pearson was still causing the hosts problems and this was the case on the hour when he beat his marker unleashing an effort that took a deflection on its way towards goal, Ward adjusted his feet well to get a hand to the effort and push it off target evading the onrushing Dyson. Barlow was in the action again for the hosts when he tried his luck from 20 yards but again Newbrook was on hand to display his fine reflexes tipping the effort over the bar. With twenty minutes to play Newbrook tipped a shot from James O’Neill overt the bar before getting a slice of luck as he was beaten by a header from Rob Sanderson which struck the crossbar and broke to Slack who fired over the bar. Possibly the best save of an excellent afternoon between the posts for Newbrook came on 73 minutes when Barlow struck a free kick from the edge of the box which took a wicked deflection and the Town stopper changed direction to block the effort and the loose ball was cleared from danger. The game was becoming stretched now as Winterton threw more and more men forward in an attempt to level. Pearson linked with Stephens who took advantage of the space he had to curl an effort past Ward but just wide of the right hand upright. Pearson then linked with Dyson and the latter’s effort was diverted away for a corner. A counter attack with ten minutes to play saw Pearson beat his marker on the edge of the area and his effort was deflected and Ward pushed it wide. An inspired substitution from Lee Riley saw Town net a second. A right wing corner was sent to the front post by Stephens and this was cleared to the edge of the box where Pearson picked it up he beat a man before putting his cross onto the penalty spot finding unmarked substitute Mike Kavanagh who headed home with his first touch, picking a great time to net his first goal for the club. Despite five minutes of added on time and some offensive substitutions by the hosts who by now had nothing to lose Town held on and go into the hat from the next round draw on Monday lunchtime.

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone.

The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 2010-11. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Definitely one to watch!

Town Pen Pictures . . . Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Peter Birch: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club this season after spells at Formby and Skelmersdale United. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defenders and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. The 2009-10 Young Player of the Year. Karl Aldridge: Right sided defender or midfield player who is another of the crop of summer signings. Now a regular following a pre-season

shoulder injury which kept him out of the team’s opening games of the season. Dave Garnell: Tall and strong central defender who also has an eye for goal. A great presence in both penalty boxes, signed this summer from Prescot Cables. Liam Ryder: Another summer 2010 signing by Lee Riley, 22 year old Liam hails from Rainhill and is a strong and pacey left sided defender who also has an eye for the odd goal. Peter Birch: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Had a spell with Town last season before moving onto Skelmersdale United. Started this season at Formby before rejoining at the start of October 2010. Che Morgan: A left-sided player who has operated at left back since his arrival from Prescot Cables in early November 2010. He is very comfortable on the ball and enjoys the odd foray down the left wing.

Mike Kavanagh: Joined the Town ranks in September 2010. Can play as a striker or on the right side of midfield. A player who likes to attack defenders with his pace. Makoto Uji: Joined Town in November 2010 from neighbours Prescot Cables - a skilful and highly competitive midfield player. Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Phil Burton: Joined the club during the close season as Assistant Manager to Lee Riley having been manager of the Prescot Cables Reserves. A well qualified coach who has had previous playing spells with Whiston Cross, Prescot Cables and Altrincham

McDaid to add his name to the 500 club Lincoln United skipper, Brendan McDaid will reach 500 appearances for the club when he takes the field at Field Mill against Glapwell on Saturday. McDaid who made his debut in 1993 has played in four spells for the club. He was deemed surplus to requirements by Garry Goddard and joined Gary Mills at Grantham Town. When joint managers, Ged Creane and John Wilkinson got the job, they made McDaid their first signing within weeks.

When Wilkinson himself headed to Grantham for a brief period, McDaid followed but both men soon found their way back to Ashby Avenue. After four seasons he again followed his Manager when Wilkinson was forced out of Ashby Avenue but returned a year later to become Seamus Lawless' skipper. His goal against Loughborough was his 90th for the club. He has passed Steve Carter's appearance record for United, and it is hoped Carter will be available to present an award for Brendan on Saturday 20th November, when United play host to Sutton Coldfield Town. McDaid is the first Lincoln United player to reach the 500 landmark.

Around The Grounds School Road - Squires Gate Town took a trip to the seaside on a Tuesday evening as they visited the aptly named School Road ground of Squires Gate being situated opposite St Nicholas Primary School on a lane off the main road. Their home ground is one of the most individual in the world of Non-League Football as they are separated from neighbours Blackpool Wren Rovers by a shared wall. The grounds are next to each other never have the words neighbours in a football sense been used in such a literal sense. The power has shifted over the wall as in the 1990’s Rovers were the North West Counties team and Squires Gate plied their trade in the West Lancashire League and these days the reverse is true. The entrance to the ground is a fair walk away from a new shared car park with neighbours Rovers which is a vast improvement on the previously available parking facilities. Upon entering via the turnstiles the quite modern dressing room complex is situated directly in front which is in the “top half of the table” in the Premier Division. Advancing behind the goal sees a small covered stand with seating, to the right of the goal when facing the pitch. This is the only cover behind this goal

and the remainder of area is uncovered hard standing with a grassed area behind. The far touchline sees a narrow covered terrace which runs for approximately half the length of this side of the pitch, the remainder of this side is uncovered. The opposite goal end is uncovered hard standing with a large grassed area behind it. Advancing beyond this back towards the turnstile sees the first of two stands being covered seating and after this is the second

stand which is a mix of covered terracing and grass. After this you reach the clubhouse which is light and modern but resembles a crèche with children’s pictures adorning the walls, one can only assume their is a childcare sideline on weekdays! Overall a tidy, neat ground with space for expansion should it be needed.

All Our Yesterdays . . . This time, we review the special issues over the years. The earliest programme involving St. Helens Town I have seen was issued by Chester on 13th September 1913. The full title was Tapler & Paddock’s Official Programme and was a 4-page large single sheet programme printed on quality, glossy paper which has stood up remarkably well to nearly 100 years of existence. The outside covers contain news and comment, as well as a photograph of George Jones, “a resolute and fearless defender” who was a miner from Rhos and went by the nickname of “Taff.” The inside pages are made up of adverts, printed in a block around the teams in the centre. The clubs had met the previous week at Park Road, which was unflatteringly described as “not one of the best, the surface being very uneven and against accurate footwork.” Sounds a bit like Atherton LR last season!

Next up is the programme for Town’s home friendly against Manchester City on 27th April 1950, a rare 8-page production. This was Hoghton Road’s highest attendance, quoted at either 4000 or 6000. The game was arranged as thank-you to Town for the transfer of Bert Trautmann the previous October. There are three good articles in the programme which I intend to reproduce in a future issue. Marine produced a 16-page programme for the Liverpool Non-League Cup Final at College Road on 10th May 1977. This was to be the last such competition, as the following year, the local non-league

clubs were joined by the area’s top clubs, usually the Reserves of Everton, Liverpool and Tranmere Rovers. The following season, Southport were to lose their league status. The programme for the last Final was the standard Marine club issue which won them the Best Non-League Programme award. Marine had finished the season in 7th place in the Cheshire League, with Town three places below them in 10th. For the record, Town lost 1-0.

Everton were the visitors to Hoghton Road on 25th October 1988 to open the club’s first floodlights. The standard 36-page programme, with a landscape view of the ground on the cover was sold on the night. Town met Rossendale United in the North West Counties Carling Challenge Cup Final at Gigg Lane, Bury in 1994. A 24-page programme was issued. Town, who lost the

game 1-0, included in their squad ex-Marine stalwart Derek McClatchey, club record scorer Ste Pennington, who had recently re-joined the club after a spell earlier in the season at Altrincham, and future manager Gary Bickerstaffe. Town’s present Chairman, John McKiernan, produced a bumper 24-page programme for the North West Counties Floodlit Trophy Final between Town and

. . . Programme Review Part 4 Burscough at Skelmersdale on 23rd March 1998. The Burscough squad included two former Town players in Paul Blasbery and skipper Ged Nolan, whilst the former Everton player, Paul Lodge, was to become Town manager some years later. The last game at Hoghton Road was against Vauxhall Motors on 29th April 2000. The 50p programme was the reigning Programme of the Year and featured Ste Pennington on the cover. 52 pages represented excellent value and there were lists of all the club’s results in the FA Cup, FA Trophy, FA Vase and Liverpool Senior Cup as well as current President Jim Barrett’s personal memories of the old ground. By the time Town had opened the new season at Knowsley Road, the price of “The Marksman” had increased to 80p. A 40 page issue was available for the inaugural match against Skelmersdale United on 23rd August 2000. Town started their new partnership with the Saints, offering fans admission, a programme and a pre-match meal in the restaurant overlooking the pitch for a fully-inclusive £10. In addition, they could remain in the restaurant for the duration of the game and take advantage of the pay bar. I wonder how long that arrangement lasted!

The final offering is last season’s programme for the Trautmann Trophy game at Manchester City on 15th November 2009. Priced at £1.50 and containing a number of photographs (some in colour) and historical articles, it also included a reproduction of the programme for Bert’s last Town game, an FA Cup tie against Bangor City on 1st October 1949. A woman finds her prize parrot laying motionless in its cage, and rushes it to the vet. After careful examination of the bird, the vet tells the woman that her beloved pet is dead. “That’s impossible, he’s less than three years old,” she cries. “I want a second opinion.” The vet agrees to her request and goes to speak to his assistant, who then goes out and returns a few minutes later with a labrador. The dog looks into the cage, sniffs at the parrot, rolls it around with his paw, then turns round and walks out. “That confirms it,” says the vet. “Your parrot is definitely dead.” The woman is distraught, but still won’t accept the verdict and demands yet another opinion. Getting a little annoyed, the vet again speaks to his assistant, who

goes out and this time comes back with a large tomcat. It goes through exactly the same procedure as the dog, then turns round and walks out. “There you are,” says the vet. “You can’t need any more proof. That will be £2000.” “Two grand just to tell me my pet is dead?” shouts the woman in disbelief. “How come?” “Well,” replies the vet. “First there’s my fee, then the lab report, and finally the cat scan.” Did you hear about the family evicted from their tree house? The bank said they didn’t pay their mortgage; the family blamed a mix-up because they recently switched branches. Two blokes meet up in a pub and, not having seen one another for some time, start catching up. “Are you still playing golf?” asks the first man. “Yes,” replies the other. “But I seem to be getting worse – it’s costing me an absolute fortune in lost golf balls.” “Then you could do with this,” says his friend, and he pulls an object from his pocket, and shows it to him. “It’s a golf ball,” observes the golfer. “Ah, yes,” says the other. “But this is no ordinary golf ball - this golf ball you cannot lose.” The golfer gives him a sceptical look. “You’re pulling my plonker,” he says, accusingly. “I’m telling you straight, you cannot lose this. Look, if you drive off into the heavy rough or into trees, this ball starts bleeping. You just follow the sound and there it is. You just cannot lose it. If you land in water, it floats to the surface and drifts to the nearest bank so you can pick it up or play it. You cannot lose it. You can even play during winter. If it lands on snow, it turns bright orange. If it lands in deep snow, it turns orange and bleeps. This golf ball is impossible to lose.” By now, the golfer is open mouthed in total and utter astonishment. “That’s fantastic,” he says. “Where on earth did you get it?” His pal smiles. “I found it.” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
