Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our landlords Ashton Athletic. May I open by welcoming our “visitors” I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend

with us and I am sure they will be able to find their way home after the fixture quite easily! In the 10 days since we were last here at Brocstedes Park we have lost two North West Counties League, Premier Division matches in contrasting fashion. A week last Saturday we welcomed Merseyside rivals Bootle to Brocstedes Park and we took the lead when skipper Andy Gillespie fired home on the half hour mark and the scores stayed the same way at the interval. A seven minute spell in the second half was to decide the destiny of the points as first the visitors drew level when Kieran Haligan got to the byline on the left before finding the unmarked James McGrane who steered the ball home into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Town looked visibly rocked and it took Bootle just seven minutes to take the lead when a soft free kick from the edge of the box was met by Jamie Hay and he headed the ball to the far post where the visitors were queuing up to turn the ball home and it was Peterson who applied the finish to put the Bucks into the lead and as it turned out secure the won for the visitors. We then took the trip to relegation rivals Barnoldswick Town on Saturday and in a vital match turned in what must rank amongst the worse performances of the season. The early signs were ominous when an early attack from the hosts saw their winger felled and the spot kick was converted. St Helens levelled with a swift counter attack when Rushton-Woods released Gillespie and he applied a fantastic finish. That was to be as good as it got for the visitors as they conceded a sloppy goal when Melia fired an effort off the bar and Henderson slid the loose ball home. A poor second half saw a pair of dubious goals for the hosts as first Melia fired a rebound home but looked a long way offside and then an awful penalty awarded when Crowther won the ball in the visitors goal was converted by Henderson to send St Helens further into the relegation mire. We now venture into a spell of three of the toughest home games we could face as we welcome Ashton Athletic (3rd), 1874 Northwich (4th) and Nelson (7th) to Brocstedes Park, no one will give us a chance of getting a return from these contests but it is vital that we start to register points as the number of games start to run out and sides below us continue to get results and draw us closer to the battle below us to stay in the division. On Saturday the performance and work rate was not to the level that we expect and this was reiterated

to the players by Ian Price and Nick Matthews, we must quickly bounce back from this disappointment as we host high flying landlords Ashton Athletic who secured a share of the spoils with out next opponents 1874 Northwich with a last minute leveller here on Saturday. In Town Today Ashton Athletic Football Club was founded in 1968 and played in the Wigan Sunday League - winning every division in consecutive seasons and many cup competitions before switching to the Warrington League on Saturdays where similar success was sustained. The club developed Brocstedes Park and was admitted to the Lancashire Combination, before becoming a founder member of the North West Counties \League when the Combination merged with the Cheshire League in 1982. Unfortunately, financial restraints prevented the required ground improvements to be completed, and the club was relegated into the Manchester league division one in 1986. The drop of two leagues resulted that the majority of the playing staff moving to other clubs and for numerous years the club endeavoured to re build. Players came and went, lacking the club loyalty that had brought success to the

club in the 1970's and 80's until the committee embraced an ambitious youth policy in 1999. The club is now at the end of a ten year development plan to enhance its recreational facilities and expand the club, in particular its junior section. Eight years ago the club had two teams, 50 members, one mediocre pitch with a dilapidated clubhouse and changing rooms. Since then, the club members have worked tirelessly to progress the club within its means, and with some help from external grant sources, assistance from the Football Foundation, awards for All

Programme and Wigan Council enabled a series of improvements to be completed. The main pitch was re drained and a second pitch acquired/improved, new changing rooms and club house built, disabled access provided and other improvements made to the ground. More recently the ground has been brought up to the necessary Ground Grading for re entry into the NWCFL in time for the 2006/07 season and further improvements have provided additional seating. The 2008/09 season also saw a further progression of the club having been promoted to the Premier division of the North West Counties League.We will again take to the national stage having been accepted into the FA Cup competition after last seasons debut in the FA Vase which proved to be very lucrative for the club, progressing through 3 stages and beating 2 teams from higher leagues in the process. Last season also saw cup success for the club retaining the Atherton Charity Cup at the end of the season. A new vision for the club is under discussion for the further development of the club and this includes improvements to the access road, new junior sections and a proposed girls/ladies section. The main ground is also scheduled for enhancement works with additional covered spectator areas.

Ashton Athletic FC The club is a voluntary organisation run by a committee of 14 alongside approximately 25 coaches and managers. Any money raised by the club has been ploughed back into improving the facilities and improving the youth section. The club now has a total membership of over 400. We have 9 junior teams consisting of approximately 160 children who take advantage of our now excellent facilities, whilst hundreds of adults and children from our opposition also take advantage of the facilities. In addition to the 2 open age teams, the occasional run out for the veterans team providing a further 20 members, the highlight being the now annual challenge match against the Past Players of Wigan Athletic. The club is keen to maintain the pace of development and future plans will enable increased activity at the club. Additional junior teams and a much safer and secure environment in particular for spectators and children. The club achieved its FA Charter Standard award in 2013 to complete its Holy Grail. Last season in the first term under the control of the management trio of Jay Foulds and two former Town players Ben Kay and Dougie Pitts the club exceeded all expectations with a 6th position finish in a competitive NWCL Premier Division, equalling their best ever finish and securing their first piece of silverware as a management conglomerate winning the League Challenge Cup Final, beating Maine Road 1-0 in the final at Curzon Ashton with another former Town man Adam Gilchrist netting the winner.

From the Chair Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties League Premier Division game against our friends and landlords Ashton Athletic. I’d like to offer a warm welcome to tonight’s match sponsors The Daily Grind and match ball sponsors The Hippodrome Bingo, St Helens. Both are first time

sponsors of Town and we hope you enjoy your evening with us (hopefully bring us a bit of good luck). We’re currently in our second season ground sharing here at Ashton and it has to be said that we have been made most welcome by Jimmy, Alan, Bill, Derek and the remainder of the committee at Ashton Athletic. It’s been difficult being exiled from Town but the task has been made much easier courtesy of a great working relationship between our two clubs and whatever the result tonight I am sure there’ll be time for a drink or two after the game. A special thanks goes to Derek who continues to assist us on those occasions when pitch inspections are required and he’s joined us at the ground on a few wet and cold early mornings over recent weeks! Our ‘visitors’ are having another superb season under the stewardship of Jay Foulds and former Town players Ben Kay and Dougie Pitts - we wish them continued success but not tonight. Our own

situation has become somewhat concerning with defeat at Barnoldswick Town on Saturday allowing our hosts to close the gap to just two points and we now sit just two points outside the relegation zone. While we do have games in hand we now need to pick up some points as a matter of urgency and I am sure Ian Price and Nick Matthews will be stressing this to the players. Some of you will be aware of the possible demise of Stockport Sports and this will be discussed by clubs in a couple of week’s time and may also have an impact on our current points total (and a number of other clubs). Don’t forget we have started our fundraising for Comic Relief, supporting Toyota GB and our main sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool. We’ve no game this Saturday but we’re back at Brocstedes Park next Tuesday evening when 1874 Northwich are our visitors for what will be another tough encounter. NWCFL News Visitors to Daisy Hill can soon look forward to sitting more comfortably when taking in action at New Sirs. Within the space of the next few months, the club will be installing eye-catching yellow plastic seats in the stand behind the goal at the club house end, which have been

acquired after being used during the 2012 London Olympics. In the aftermath of the Games, a variety of fixtures and fittings have been made available for use by other sports clubs across the country, and as Daisy Hill Secretary Bob Naylor explained, the club were first made aware of the opportunity to get the seats a few months ago. “We were alerted to the fact that the seats were available after receiving a note from League Secretary John Deal, so we decided to investigate”, said Bob. “At that stage you didn’t know exactly how many you would get or if you were successful, you just had to put in a request for certain lots. “I submitted the application online, and a few weeks later we were told we had been successful and that we had been allocated 150 seats. It was then down to us to arrange the transport to pick them up from London, and bring them up to the ground.

“We arranged for a courier to collect them, and when he got to our ground with the seats it turned out that we had been given slightly more than we expected, there were 196 in total. “The only problem is that we will have to look at a couple of options to install the seats. The existing ones aren’t suitable for safely securing them at our ground in their present state, which we couldn’t have known at the time we applied. “The seats are designed to be secured on vertical brackets, whereas we need to install them on horizontal brackets, so we can either get the existing brackets modified or get new ones made. I’ve spoken to a couple of suppliers, and it looks like getting new ones will be the best option. “It’s a pity because if it wasn’t for that, we could have had them installed within a matter of weeks. “But we will start work on getting everything we need, and if the seats are not in place by the end of this season, they will certainly be ready for use by the start of the new season”.

Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving

on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town

manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club ’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club ’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation.

2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire

secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop. Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground for three seasons before moving across town to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. In readiness for the move, the club is undergoing a radical re-branding, adopting the town’s coat of arms as their badge once again and reverting next season to their traditional blue and white colours in preparation for a return to the town in 2015.

NWCFL News The League Management Committee can now issue a further statement with regard to Stockport Sports. The Club has failed to fulfil fixtures on three separate occasions this season, which is in breach of League Rule 8.6 which states: “Any Club without just cause, failing to fulfil an engagement

to play a Competition match on the appointed date shall for each offence be liable to expulsion from the Competition and/or such other disciplinary action the Board may determine". The Club have also failed to comply with League Rule 2.3.1 by failing to comply with the Management Committee instructions regarding confirmed notification of venues for their remaining home fixtures by the 24th January 2015 deadline. The Club had been notified of the implementation of League Rule 4.6, whereby they would not be allowed to play or take part in the competition until the expiry of 7 days from the day this instruction was complied with. The Club also has considerable outstanding debt to the League, and have not complied with the instruction issued on 29th January 2015, when they were made aware of the requirement to settle the debt in full within 14 days. Having sought confirmation from The Football Association of the procedure to be adopted in these circumstances, the League Secretary has now issued 14 days notice to all member clubs that an Extraordinary General Meeting will be held on Monday March 2nd 2015. The agenda for the meeting is: "To expel Stockport Sports F.C. from membership of the North West Counties Football League". In the event that that member clubs vote in favour of Stockport Sports being expelled, their playing record will be expunged.

Winsford United have announced plans to help raise funds for national cancer charity Macmillan. The club will work in partnership with representatives of the charity to set up two fund raising events at the Barton Stadium, as Blues Secretary Bob Astles explained. "Following a meeting at the end of last year, we considered ways in which we could help raise funds for this very worthwhile charity that has done so much for so many people", said Bob. "Following the lead of the Prostate Cancer day at the match between 1874 Northwich and Runcorn Linnets, we suggested Macmillan should use our

home fixture against 1874 Northwich on Easter Monday to raise much needed funds. "Leading on from this, Macmillan asked if they could use the facilities at the Barton Stadium to stage a knockout competition for junior teams at the end of the season. "The event is being sponsored by Asda, and they are looking to raise in the region of £2000 for the charity. The event has now been firmed up for the weekend of May 23rd/24th, and schools in the area will soon be contacted to encourage them to enter teams for the event". www.nwcfl.com

Club News #RND15 Town are playing there part in this year’s Red Nose Day 2015 by supporting a number of fundraising activities in the build up to 13th March 2015. Every two years, since 1988, Red Nose fundraising for Comic Relief has been inspiring the nation to help change the lives of people in the UK and Africa. It ’s a fantastic six weeks of fundraising culminating with a fun-filled night of TV

comedy and entertainment on 13th March 2015. 2015 is set to be a big year for Comic Relief. To date, they have raised more than £950 million. Toyota GB have become an official partner of Red Nose Day 2015, reflecting their global vision and commitment to improving lives around the world. The whole Toyota family is getting together with each Centre taking the opportunity to reach out to their local community to raise funds.

As an official partner for Red Nose Day, Toyota is the exclusive retailer of Red Noses for cars – with the aim of raising £1 million through sales and other fundraising. Match Report Disappointing Town go down in relegation six-pointer

With Stockport Sports currently suspended by the NW Counties League, the other four occupants of the bottom five played each other last weekend and

Barnoldswick, reinvigorated by a number of new signings, strolled to a 4-1 victory against a St. Helens Town side who lacked fight and motivation and, in the process, closed the gap between the sides to two points. It was a game neither side wanted to lose, but only Barnoldswick were seemingly up for the battle. The only positive Town could draw from the game was that Bacup, with only their second win of the season, pulled off a surprise 2-0 victory over AFC Blackpool, thereby restricting the damage of the defeat. Barnoldswick started off on the front foot and soon had Town under pressure on a heavily sanded, boggy pitch. Aaron Morris conceded a penalty on 9 minutes with a clumsy challenge along the goal-line and recent signing Jack Tinning comfortably scored from the spot-kick, to end Rory Crowther’s proud record of saving his last five penalties. St. Helens lost midfield anchor Cole Ashton with a leg injury soon afterwards and Marcus Perry entered the fray.

On a rare raid upfield, Andy Gillespie latched on to a long pass from James Rushton-Woods and calmly picked his spot to net past keeper Scott Reid in the 22nd minute but, from that point on, Town looked unlikely to score again. Just after the half-hour, Barlick went ahead again when, after a thunderous shot re-bounded off the visitors’ crossbar, Morris had gifted possession and another new signing, Thomas Henderson scrambled the ball over the line. In the run-up to half-time, Perry and Matty Davidson tried shots from 20 yards, but both were wide of the far post and the first period ended with Crowther pulling off a great finger-tip save to deny Martin Broderick at the other end. The second-half was virtually all one-way traffic, Barnoldswick failing to increase their advantage until two poor decisions by the officials gifted them a further two goals.

Town did not deserve to win, but the outcome was put out of their reach when Henderson, some distance offside, netted again on 71 minutes. The assistant running the line, when asked by St. Helens ’ managerial team how he considered the scorer was onside and which defender had been between him and the keeper, reportedly hesitated and said “someone in a red shirt.” As the game drew to its inevitable conclusion, Crowther moved to cover a ball from Chris Ridehalgh and put his hand on top of the ball before Ridehalgh tripped over his outstretched arm, but the referee gave a penalty and Henderson completed his hat-trick. To add insult to injury, Paul Cook-Hannah, who had come on for the injured Gillespie, was dismissed within five minutes in bizarre circumstances. He jumped for a high ball and clearly headed it, but when he was penalised and protested, he was shown a yellow then an immediate red card and his brief cameo appearance was over. The referee later claimed he had given him two yellows but refused to elaborate further.
