Those were the parting words of a legend we said good bye to this week and it’s a shame he didn’t get the chance to farewell the game on his own terms.

Carlton and West Coast great Chris Judd announced his retirement on Tuesday, leaving all fans with great memories of a true master exponent of our national game.

Seeing the 31 year-old carted off his domain of the MCG knowing the likely knee reconstruction would end his illustrious career was a sad fate to befall the champion midfielder.

However, with 279 games to fall back on, there are certainly plenty more happy moments to savour in his time.

He has stood the best and beaten the best.

He has turned games on his own, becoming a marvel to watch.

He will be remembered as one of the game’s greats.

In hindsight, Judd admits that

he probably erred on pushing his body one more year. But he was still a major contributor in a flagging side and his expertise around the club proved invaluable to the youngsters who could say they played and learnt from one of the game’s best.

He departed saying that he had given it everything, but Judd, in fact, gave even more and his battered body can attest to that.

It earned him the highest awards of the game – two Brownlow medals, a premiership medal as captain, a Norm Smith medal, two ALFPA MVPs, six-time All-Australian selections and five-time club best and fairest honours to his credit.

There is not much he hasn’t achieved. Judd is also one player universally-liked by all in the game, players, coaches and fans alike. Not many can say that either.

Even as he tore your side apart single-handedly, fans could only watch and applaud his prowess.

His skills were sublime, silky smooth, and he moved with grace, blistering through packs to

Wimbledon preparations are in full swing after the French Open and some Aussies are finding early success on grass courts in the lead-up.

Sam Groth had a confidence-boosting title win in the Aegon Manchester Trophy, beating fellow Australian Luke Saville in the final. Chris Guccione and his Brazilian partner Andre Sa won the doubles in a walkover.

Groth joined Wimbledon legends Pete Sampras and John McEnroe as a winner of the event. Frank Sedgman, Lew Hoad, Ken Rosewall, Jimmy Connors, Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter are on the honour roll.

The Matildas gave United States a fright in their opening clash of women’s soccer World Cup in Canada on Tuesday (Australian time).

However, the Australians again found the title favourite too strong, going down 1-3, despite being the better side in the first half.

Still to beat the two-time World Cup winner, the Matildas can take a lot of positives from the loss and look towards more favourable results in upcoming matches, starting with Nigeria on Friday morning (Australian time).

This is Port Adelaide’s time! With it regaining belief in itself and on the big stage of Friday night football at Adelaide Oval, the Power

gets its opportunity to really announce its validity to higher rewards this season.

They were made to work for the result by the Western Bulldogs last Saturday night, in an at times scrappy affair, but their efforts to lift in the final quarter to the type of form seen last year must give them greater confidence that the tide has turned.

Now there is no better time to reproduce their best than in front of a large audience against Geelong to really send out a warning that Port Adelaide should not be forgotten about in 2015.

While skills still need a bit of a touch up, their uncompromising attack on both ball and body was a marked improvement against the Bulldogs and that must be a number one prerequisite this week.

Captain Travis Boak, Brad Ebert and Ollie Wines can be unquestioned in this area, but usual contributors Chad Wingard, Justin Westhoff and Hamish Hartlett put in their best performances of the season so far and now must build on that momentum.

The Cats showed last week against Essendon that they were not yet the spent force that some had previously predicted, holding the Bombers goalless (just 0.6) in the first half of their clash last Saturday night.

This becomes an even more crucial encounter too with both sides sitting just outside the top eight. Past matches have always been particularly memorable between these two clubs.

Key defender Jackson Trengove pushed hard to prove his fitness for an earlier than expected comeback but he could be given more time to ensure his ankle recovery is 100 per cent for a return after next week’s break.

While Trengove’s experience would be valuable against the taller Cats’ forwards, youngster Tom Clurey has been holding his own and further exposure at the top level wouldn’t harm his development moving ahead either.

It’s often the smaller attacking runners of Geelong like Steve Johnson, Steven Motlop and Mathew Stokes that need the greater attention anyway.

Ruckman Patrick Ryder faced a searching fitness test during the week, but it could be coach Ken Hinkley with the final say, seeing as the side is

showing last year’s run again without the extra big man.

Hinkley may yet go back to the magnet board over the bye weekend to find the right fit for ‘Paddy’ in the line-up.

For this week though, Brandon Ah Chee’s magnet could be back on the board after a standout display in the SANFL. Kane Mitchell and Andrew Moore also put their hands up again, which would see Aaron Young, despite only getting one quarter last week, and Sam Gray at Hinkley’s mercy.

Adelaide was clearly out on its feet in the last quarter against Carlton last Saturday, but still managed to will itself over the line.

It was a vital four points in the scheme of the season and the rest this weekend was well earned.

However, the players’ focus must not sway too far from their upcoming opponent, a rising Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval next Thursday night.

The Crows have been able to lift for such

occasions in the past and with this clash earmarked as the club’s major celebration of its 25 years in the AFL, there is added attention coming their way.

The composure of young defender Jake Lever should be available while Richard Douglas and Brad Crouch showed that they were ready for a return to the senior outfit.

However, without another SANFL run possible this week, they may be a match underdone for such an important encounter. That may give a few players who have been lucky to hold their spots a one week reprieve to prove themselves.

Big Josh Jenkins did just that last week, being a forward presence and kicking five goals against the Blues. But he cannot continue to be an ‘on and off’ player.

His impact on the contest can also play a role in getting skipper Taylor Walker back into form as well by taking some of the opposition focus away from ‘Tex’.

Jarryd Lyons continues to show he is a step above the SANFL but has just failed to have the same influence at AFL level James Posiadly was a focal point in the local league last week to give coach Phil Walsh something to think about, especially if a strong marking option up forward is warranted.


PORT ADELAIDE V GEELONGFriday 7.20pm, Adelaide Oval

Port Adelaide ended a 10-game losing streak against Geelong with a 40-point victory at Adelaide Oval in round six last year. The Cats led by two points at quarter-time but it was all Port thereafter, starting with 4.1 to 0.5 in the second quarter. It finished Port 16.11 (107) to Geelong’s 9.13 (67) with three goals aside from Chad Wingard and Tom Hawkins. Port hadn’t beaten Geelong since its 2007 win at Kardinia Park which preceded its record grand final loss to the Cats that year. Bizarrely, only two of those 10 straight wins by Geelong were at Football Park, in 2008 and 2013. However, the Cats had won four straight games at West Lakes against Port since their previous defeat by the Power in Adelaide, way back in the first qualifying final of 2004. Overall, the Cats lead 18 wins to nine with one draw. In Adelaide, Port leads 6-5 with one draw, while the Power is ‘one from one’ at Adelaide Oval. The goals record holder in this fixture is Angus Monfries with seven in Geelong in a losing side in 2013. This is the first Friday night match in Adelaide for the season and the first between these two sides in Adelaide since 2005.PORT ADELAIDE: $1.48 GEELONG $2.65

WEST COAST V ESSENDONSaturday 4.05pm, Domain Stadium

Essendon has won three of its past four games against West Coast including their most recent meeting in round 21 last year at Docklands. The Eagles appeared set for the win after leading by 23 points at half-time. However, the Bombers cut that lead to 11 by the last change and the Eagles stopped to a walk in the final term, held to just two behinds as the Bombers took the lead through David Zaharakis with their second and last goal of term at the 11-minute mark. Just one behind apiece was scored for the remainder of the game as the home side hung on to win 11.11 (77) to 11.8 (74). Jason Winderlich and Josh Kennedy both kicked three goals for their respective sides. Josh Hill could have won it for the Eagles in the final two minutes but missed from a difficult angle, 45 metres from goal. This game is at Subiaco where the Eagles won eight straight games against the Bombers until Essendon’s victory at its last visit in 2013 by seven points. That win came after the Eagles had led by 17 points at three quarter-time. Essendon leads overall by 27 wins to 21. But at Subiaco, the Eagles have an imposing 14-3 record.WEST COAST: $1.20 ESSENDON: $4.60

NORTH MELBOURNE V SYDNEYSaturday 6.50pm, Etihad Stadium

North Melbourne ended a seven-game losing streak against Sydney with a 43-point win at the SCG in round four last year. The Roos led by just six points at half-time but unloaded an onslaught of 9.6 to 3.5 in the second half to win 13.13 (91) to 6.12 (48). Lance Franklin was held goalless for the only time last season while Kurt Tippett didn’t play. However, the Swans turned the tables in the first preliminary final at Homebush, taking charge of the game to race to a 21-point lead at quarter-time. That margin was extended at every change as the Roos bowed out of the finals meekly to lose by 71 points, 19.22 (136) to 9.11 (65). This game is at Docklands where the sides haven’t met since 2011 when Sydney won by one point. The Swans lead by two wins to one at the venue with a draw in 2008. Overall, Sydney leads by 82 wins to 72 with one draw.NORTH MELBOURNE: $2.75 SYDNEY: $1.45

GOLD COAST V FREMANTLESaturday 1.10pm, Metricon Stadium

Fremantle has won all four prior encounters with Gold Coast. Only once were the Dockers really pushed and that was in 2012 at Carrara. The Suns led by 17 points at half-time but the Dockers turned the game with 5.4 to 2.0 in the third quarter and held on to win by seven points, 14.10 (94) to 14.3 (87). Their only other meeting on the Gold Coast was in 2013 when they won by 45 points after four goals from Michael Walters, still the goals record for these two teams. Their most recent clash was in round two last year in Perth when the Dockers enjoyed a 12-point lead at half-time. But 7.10 to 2.4 in the second half made it pretty comfortable for the home side as they won by 48 points, 12.15 (87) to 5.9 (39). It proved to be the Suns’ lowest score yet against Freo.GOLD COAST: $8.00 FREMANTLE: $1.08

ST KILDA V MELBOURNE Sunday 4.10pm, Etihad Stadium

Melbourne and St Kilda haven’t met since the opening round last year when the Saints prevailed in a low-scoring affair by 17 points, 10.8 (68) to 6.15 (51). That’s despite the Dees having 408 possessions to 348 and 47 inside 50s to 38. Nick Riewoldt top scored for the day with three goals. It was the Saints’ 10th straight win against the Demons, easily passing their previous record winning streak for this fixture of six and equalling Melbourne’s 10-game winning streak against St Kilda from 1945-50. The Demons haven’t beaten St Kilda since the 2006 second elimination final when they won by 18 points, 13.12 (90) to 10.12 (72). In the Saints’ 10 straight wins since, their smallest margin of victory has been 17 points but only one of the wins was by more than 47 points. St Kilda leads five wins to three at Docklands, having won the past five in a row. Melbourne’s last win against the Saints at Docklands was in 2002 when it won by 18 points.ST KILDA: $1.85 MELBOURNE: $1.95

COLLINGWOOD V GWS GIANTSSunday 12.40pm, MCG

Collingwood has won all three previous matches against GWS but the margins in these games tell a story themselves. The Magpies won by 120 points in 2012, by 40 points in 2013 and by eight points last year. Travis Cloke (six goals) and Dane Swan (five goals and 37 possessions) had field days in 2012 as the Magpies thrashed the Giants in their inaugural clash at the Sydney Showgrounds. The Pies kicked nine goals to one in the final term to win 26.18 (174) to 7.12 (54). Devon Smith scored three of the Giants’ seven goals. In 2013 in their only previous clash at the MCG, the Giants were shock 16-point leaders at half-time. But Collingwood led by two points at the last change and added another 6.4 to 0.2 in the final term to win 15.16 (106) to 10.6 (66). Cloke kicked another three while Jeremy Cameron booted seven of the Giants’ 10 goals. Then last year back at the Showgrounds, GWS led at all three intervals by seven, seven and 10 points. The encouraging start to 2015 for South has slowly fallen away, with a 29 point loss to the Eagles last week sliding them further. South was unable to kick more than two goals in any quarter, despite five Panthers having 25 or more disposals, while no Eagle had more than 24 touches. A serious knee injury to Peter Rolfe further dampened Panther spirits as their versatility in attack diminished.

Glenelg will be flying high after its first win of 2015, as it held sway for most of the day against a dispirited North Adelaide in a match where the Tigers dominated all key indicators. Their work at the clearances was particularly crucial, and coach Matthew Lokan will have felt vindicated in keeping the faith in the playing group.

South has won the past five encounters between the clubs. But the Tigers will have their tails up this week with the confidence from the win and the Panthers will be wary about taking them lightly. Both teams average 42 clearances a match and with Glenelg lacking a regular dominant ruckman, South big man Daniel Bass will hold a real key to the game in getting it to his onballers to give them first usage.

The Tigers will aim to shut down the space for the likes of Joel Cross, Xavier Gotch and Brede Seccull to work in the contested situations and try to create their own opportunities around the wider expanses of Noarlunga. There is a real nagging feeling to tip Glenelg to take the points, but will give South one more chance here.Tip: South Adelaide 13-24

WEST ADELAIDE V PORT MAGPIESSaturday 2.10pm, City Mazda Stadium Radio: Life FM

While losing to ladder leader Norwood last week, West lost few admirers in doing so with a gritty six-point defeat. The multi-faceted attack again proved hard to hold down, with Travis Tuck, Taite Silverlock and Aaron Fielke combining for seven goals, and despite being down on rotations through injury after half time, it only just fell short.

Port looked in real trouble against Central when it trailed by more than five goals before half time. But a 5.2 to 0.2 third term proved decisive. Kane Mitchell pressed his claims for a AFL recall with 29 disposals and two goals.

Boasting the highest scoring attack in the league, the Bloods will be aiming for a fast start here to set the tone early against a Magpies outfit that is playing in fits and starts in 2015. Some major lapses in concentration have nearly cost them the points against Glenelg and Central. But a similar mental attitude could cost them dearly against a team conceding less than 70 points a game.

Port’s midfield depth is still formidable but it lacks consistency in attack at times, and will be looking for more from the likes of John Butcher to place pressure on opposition defences if it is to make a run at a top three spot. This has all the hallmarks of an entertaining, free flowing game that looks to tip just toward the Bloods to move to 7-2.Tip: West Adelaide 13-24

Norwood held sway at the top of the ladder after holding off a spirited West to notch a six point win. While many thought Russell Ebert’s four Magarey Medals would never be topped, James Allan continues to do his chances of equaling the mark no harm with another dominant performance, ably supported by Mat Suckling and arguably the most improved player at The Parade, Pat Levicki. Sturt found a combination of an Adelaide outfit boosted by several class ins and a slow start too much to overcome in a 49-point defeat, despite the best efforts of Zane Kirkwood and Ben Hansen. Adelaide was highly unlikely to go the season without a win. Sturt mentor Seamus Maloney would be most concerned at conceding 22 goals to a team which struggled to kick more than 12 many weeks.

The Redlegs have dominated the clashes over the years, winning 10 of the past 11 and on paper, it is hard to see this changing this week. Norwood has proven its ability to dictate the tone and pace of games many times this season, but Maloney will take particular note of the last 10 minutes last week at The Parade. Rather than go into its shell, West kept attacking hard and the ball was in its goalsquare when the siren sounded after kicking the last three goals of the game. Sturt must continue to take an attacking mentality into the match and keep running to break open Norwood’s numbers around the ball and set its own tone of the game. Eventually, a winning streak has to end, but this looks a week too early for Sturt.Tip: Norwood 13-24

Samuels a target for Aussies

ustralian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson says it’s no coincidence West Indies veteran Marlon Samuels was caught twice on the

boundary hooking in the first Test.

The 34 year-old has been identified as a key wicket, particularly with veteran left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul overlooked.

Samuels made his highest Test score against Australia in the second innings of last week’s first Test, a patient 74 that gave the hosts a chance of fighting their way back into the match after early trouble.

But, just as he did in the first innings when he skied a hook shot off Mitchell Starc to Josh Hazlewood on the boundary, Samuels fell into the trap when Johnson dug one in short.

The Jamaican’s departure sparked a collapse

as Australia romped to a nine-wicket win inside three days.

“It was definitely something we spoke about,” Johnson said.

“He’s not too good with the short ball ... it was definitely a plan to bowl a few short ones at him, try to get him to hook.

“He was going along perfectly there for the team and they probably missed an opportunity there.

“I think that was probably a build-up of pressure as well, the reason why he went after the short ball. You have those plans in place, but when they work it is very exciting.”

Samuels can expect more short-ball treatment in the second Test in Kingston from Thursday.

“He’s a big player for them,” Johnson said.

“He looks ugly the way he plays the game, it is not a conventional sort of style but he gets the job done for them.”

P romising Australian golfer Cameron Smith has produced a blazing finish after a rain delay to earn a major

championship debut at next week’s US Open.

The 21 year-old Queenslander booked his start in the Open at Chambers Bay just when it looked as though Australia’s efforts across the eight American qualifying sites were going to be without success.

“I’m pumped and really looking forward to it obviously,” said Smith after joining exempt Australians Jason Day, Adam Scott, John Senden, Geoff Ogilvy, Marc Leishman, Marcus Fraser and Kurt Barnes in the field.

“It is going to be my first major so I’ll be over the moon. I’ll try to prepare well and see what happens.”

a small but hugely significant part of State of Origin history is on NSW’s side as they attempt to achieve the near-

impossible – winning the interstate series from a game down.

They say those who ignore history are deemed to repeat it, but what about Blues coach Laurie Daley, who could be forgiven for harking back to past NSW glories, ahead of next Wednesday night’s game two at the MCG, where NSW have won two of the three Origin matches played.

Only twice in 33 years since Origin became a best-of-three series in 1982, have the Blues fought their way back to win the series after suffering an opening-match defeat.

The last time they managed the feat was when rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns and coach Ricky Stuart engineered one of the great Blues’ comebacks in the 2005 series.

But the first time the Blues clawed their way back from a game one setback was in 1994.

After losing the opener in Sydney, they were asked to travel to Melbourne to rescue the series, before claiming the decider in Brisbane, against a side skippered by a figure who had already become a familiar foe for Daley, current Maroons coach Mal Meninga.

Back then, Blues captain Daley was forced to rally his heartbroken troops after they lost Origin I 16-12 on the back of the Maroons’ famous last-minute miracle try to Mark Coyne.

Origin then moved to the MCG, where the Blues swept Queensland aside 14-0 before a record rugby league crowd to force a deciding game.

NSW had never before won a series decider in Brisbane, but on the back of a man-of-the match performance from Ben Elias, the Blues prevailed, winning the Lang Park clash 27-12 to rewrite the history books.

Of course history is also against Daley’s Blues, who lost last month’s opener 11-10 in Sydney.

In 24 of the 33 series, the state that has won Origin I has gone on to win the series.

Texas, Pampling looked set to replicate his qualifying effort from last year only to double bogey the final hole and miss by a shot.

Clint Rice was also close to qualifying in Springfield, Ohio, where his fifth place finish missed a berth by one shot but secured alternate status, leaving him to hope for some withdrawals for a maiden major appearance.

Payneham Norwood Union willed itself to another victory before the break, over Salisbury North, but this week’s clash with top side Tea Tree Gully will show where the Falcons are positioned after a promising start to their season back in the top flight.

Third place on the ladder at the end of the round is the likely reward for the winner between Old Ignatians

and Pembroke at Hunter Park as matches resume after the bye weekend.

Old Iggies hold third place with five wins, just one win and .05 clear of Pembroke in fourth place. In its most recent game Old Ignatians fell to PHOS Camden by 18 points with Patrick Connelly, Angus Crowley and Laurence Comazzetto among the best players. Pembroke was far too strong for Mitcham by 94 points with Nicholas McCann, Ben Williams and Thomas Evans (eight goals) leading the way. A flip of the coin job here with maybe the home-based Iggies narrowly.

Seaton Ramblers and Golden Grove lock horns at Pedlar Reserve with the visiting Kookaburras going in strongly fancied. The

Rams, winless after eight rounds, have had the past two weeks off with a scheduled bye and a long weekend and may take time to get back in the swing of things. Their most recent game was a 29-point loss to Flinders Park with Bradyn Wild best. Golden Grove is sitting sixth and will look to build on a convincing 83-point win against Plympton in its most recent match. Scott Peterson was its best. Hard to go past Grove to win by eight goals.

Neighbours Plympton and PHOS Camden meet for the first time in quite a while at Plympton, the Phantoms usually playing a higher grade until this season. The Bulldogs are seventh with two wins, while the Phantoms are second with just the one loss. The more senior Eagles will be keen to keep the newcomers below them and should be prepared to send a statement to the rest of the competition in the process.

The Jets will certainly experience what playing at the higher level is all about this week and will look to lift for the occasion as well.

This should be one entertaining and physical clash.

Both teams went into the break with big wins and neither will want to let their form slip here.

Seeing the likes of Chris Radetti, Joe Boxer, Shawn McGregor, Garth van Ristell and Byron Sumner from Gaza do battle with Nick Stuart, Tom Rodger, Nick Chettle, Stephen White and Nick Wark of the Jets will be a highlight of the top-of-the-table clash.

Modbury will be out to capitalise on taking the spot of the loser of this encounter too.

Sitting just behind the top pair in third, the Hawks should be able to account for SMOSH West Lakes on Saturday to jump into a top-two position.

The Lions would have enjoyed creating a handy buffer away from the bottom two sides with their victory over Gepps Cross before the break to remain a slim finals chance as well.

Modbury wouldn’t want to take its opponent lightly on its away trip to West Lakes. The Lions are capable of causing an upset on their day, especially if Sam White, Jack Hoppo-Luckett and James Cibich put in another strong showing and Charlie Rae gets plenty of opportunities in front of goal.

St Peters OC began to make its move with two impressive wins before the break to keep a presence among the finals’ contenders.

Jacob Gschwandtner, Henry and Luke Trenorden and Liam Cocks can continue SPOC’s run when Walkerville visits Caterer Oval on Saturday to battle it out for the Peter Franklin Cup.

kilburn and Eastern Park resume action this week at Blair Athol Reserve with the winner likely to occupy third place on the ladder by night’s end.

The Chics are third with six wins going in to the round. But a win to Eastern Park will see it claim third with a stronger percentage.

In its game before the break Kilburn beat Kenilworth by 19 points with Scott Galbraith leading the charge. Eastern Park recorded a 63-point win against Glenunga as Matthew Paul led the home side to victory. A tough call but the home side gets the nod by two goals.

North Haven looks tough to beat when it hosts seventh team Hope Valley this week. The Magpies have chalked up eight wins without loss, their most recent game saw a low-scoring,

dour 31-point win against Hectorville. Brock Day was best. Hope Valley trailed at each break against Pooraka to go down by 14 points when those sides met before the bye. Devin Payne battled hard for the Demons. Hard to mount a case for anything bar a North Haven win.

Pooraka and Westminster Old Scholars also are neck and neck on the ladder. The Bulls, fifth, edged out Hope Valley in their most recent game with Ben Russell starring. Westminster Old Scholars, sixth, with a slightly better percentage than Pooraka, held out Salisbury by three points in their recent game. Nat Ryan led the Dragons to victory. The Bulls, at Lindblom Park, are tipped by 10-15 points.

Salisbury and Kenilworth are second and second to bottom respectively and that should be the difference at Salisbury Oval this week. The Magpies’ best in their recent three-point loss to Westminster was Alex Jolly. Kenilworth is finding life in this division tough, although it pushed Kilburn to a 19-point loss last time.

Colonel Light Gardens has been showing strength in adversity this season, to be atop the Division 5 ladder, despite a vast

number of injuries to key players.

Lions coach Matthew Dent will be hoping the club’s injury list will subside over the second half of the season as players return to the squad in coming weeks, but Barton Sweet, Nick Belfield and Travis Carling have been holding the side up well in the meantime.

Colonel Light Gardens travels to Argana Park on Saturday to face an Elizabeth group, which includes in-form Lee Makris and Brandon

Olszewski, that is still pursuing a top-five finish.

Woodville South got off the bottom of the ladder last round, with its second win of the season, and the Cats could lift themselves out of the relegation zone this week with a win over Greenacres.

It will be crucial contest for both sides though as the winner would still consider itself a chance of playing finals football, but demotion becomes a real likelihood for the loser.

Top three hopes will have implications on the outcome of Para Hills’ clash with CBCOC.

Glenunga and Hectorville are at the other end of the ladder in bottom and eighth place respectively. The Rams are yet to win a game this season, last time falling to Eastern Park by 63 points. Hectorville has just two wins on the board, in its previous game holding North Haven to 8.4 to 3.3. Sam Ritchie was among the leading lights for the Hounds.

No surprise to see Glenunga win but the Hounds should be barking again by 20 points.

The Roos slipped up against Colonel Light Gardens before the break and another lapse could turn their season upside down and the Dolphins will have aspirations to secure their own finals position.

In other matches to resume proceedings on Saturday, Pulteney hosts Rosewater and Adelaide Lutheran is up against Blackfriars OS.

west Croydon and Brahma Lodge kick off the post-bye round looking for an early win to keep pace with the leading pack.

The Hawks are fifth with three wins and looking to atone for a plucky two-point loss to Ingle Farm in their recent game. Lee Walsh led the Hawks’ late charge. Brahma Lodge, seventh with two wins, also had a narrow loss when it fell to Trinity Old Scholars by 16 points, Daniel Grgurovic leading the Tigers’ best players. Home ground swings it to the Hawks by 28-39 points.

Mawson Lakes and Central United are eighth and bottom on the ladder respectively but should provide an absorbing game at Mawson Lakes.

The Saints recorded a gritty four-point away win against Lockleys in the round before the bye with Chheouth Ung leading the way. Central United had the bye before the weekend bye. Troy Clausen stood tall for United. Tough game to sort out with both sides showing good recent form, but the Saints can win here by 20-26 points.

Smithfield and Ingle Farm also looks a good match although Smithfield has handled every challenge well to sit unbeaten on seven wins. The Panthers had a tight battle with Fitzroy for most of the day before getting home by 26 points

After a long trip to Angle Vale, Flinders University will be looking to, at least, be more competitive against the Owls than

they were against Mitchell Park last week.

Although they are struggling to find a win in Division 7 this season, they are a better side than that as far as putting in an effort, but they were non-existent last week, losing by 172 points.

An improved work rate will be called upon from all, especially from previous weeks’ ball winners like Mopati Dagen Toteng, Nick Howie and Leigh Rayner.

The Owls will be disappointed by their result last week as well, just missing out on overhauling Salisbury West after being down by 25 points at the main break.

Wayward goal-kicking in the second half though proved costly for Angle Vale, going down by just eight points in the finish.

The two victors from last week will meet this week at Mitchell Park Oval.

The Diamond Jubilee Stakes on Saturday 20 June is the most likely Royal Ascot race

for top-class colt Brazen Beau.

Trainer Chris Waller is still to make up his mind totally on the best race for his three year-old star, with the King’s Stand Stakes, the highlight sprint on the first of five days of racing at Royal Ascot on Tuesday, also an option.

“I’m still a few days off making a final decision because I want to see what the weather forecast is like,” Waller said.

“If it is OK then the Diamond Jubilee is the race we’ll more than likely run him in.

“The Diamond Jubilee will give him a chance to show his class at 1200 metres whereas the King’s Stand is a straight out sprint race.”

Brazen Beau will be one of four Australian horses to race at Royal Ascot and if the three-year-old is saved for the Diamond Jubilee on the final day of the carnival he will clash with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Wandjina.

Shamal Wind will be a King’s Stand Stakes starter and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Criterion is being aimed at the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday.

Set to stand at Darley’s Northwood Park in Victoria in 2015 after a stud deal was finalised following his Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes win last spring, Brazen Beau is being trained out of Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing stables at Newmarket.

“It’s heaven for horses. I’ve had some photos sent to me and the horse looks to have come through the trip very well,” Waller said.

Brazen Beau will be Waller’s first Royal Ascot runner after plans to run Zoustar last year were abandoned when the colt suffered a suspensory ligament injury in England and was retired to stud.

Choisir became the first Australian-trained sprinter to win the Diamond Jubilee Stakes when he backed up after his King’s Stand triumph to win the 2003 edition.

It turned out to be a nine-year wait for the next Australian triumph when Black Caviar had to call on extra reserves of courage to beat Moonlight Cloud in a photo finish.
