Don’t let the saints march on

2 SPORTSBEAT // 2 JUNE 2016

The AFL tells us that it will “tweak” the ‘Laws of the Game’ to alleviate any

future contentious head high infringements occurring.

Interesting, really, considering they said exactly the same thing this time last year when then umpiring boss Wayne Campbell introduced stricter interpretations stating that the player who drives or leads his head into a stationary or near-stationary player will be classified as having had prior opportunity and if tackled would be penalised for holding the ball.

Roll forward 12 months and that certainly has not been the interpretation umpires have been using this season and, in particular, last weekend.

The issue is that at present umpires are favouring players who are doing just that.

So it encourages players to do it more frequently at their own sacrifice of serious injury.

It is frustrating to watch but clubs are now training players in the art of dropping the knees to generate a free kick.

This ‘milking’ of free kicks has become a blight on the game.

Players now simply flail their arms about or fling their head or bodies back to feign free kicks, even if there is no contact from an opposition player. Umpires are getting sucked into awarding free kicks or just plain guessing.

A free definitely shouldn’t be awarded when the tackler initiates contact below the shoulders correctly but his arms are raised around the head by his opponent’s means.

Dermott Brereton has been an outspoken advocate against such practices while it is interesting that two commentators who believe that this is not a problem are Wayne Carey and Luke Darcy who have past connections to two of the most recipient clubs.

Soon a player who takes such action through ducking or collapsing their knees or bullocking head first into a tackle is going to be seriously injured.

It could all avoided by simply not paying these free kicks and so players will quickly stop doing it

Ducking lucky dip

Aussies David Warner and Ben Cutting have led Sunrisers Hyderabad to victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League final.

Warner got the ball rolling with his usual flair to hit 69 off 38 balls in entertaining fashion while Cutting came in late to record an unbeaten 39 off 15 balls to steer the Sunrisers to a resounding 7-208 off their 20 overs.

Not even a punishing blitz from controversial West Indian Chris Gayle (76 off 38 balls) could reel in the mammoth total, falling just eight runs short though, after Gayle and Royal Challengers captain Virat Kohli put on a 114-run opening partnership.

Warner took a particular liking to former Australian teammate Shane Watson’s bowling in his eight fours and three sixes knock while Cutting also took 2 for 35 when bowling, including the wicket of Gayle. New South Welshman Moises Henriques also celebrated on the victor’s side.

Most of your local tyre dealers would have changed tyres quicker than the Red Bull pit crew caught napping during last Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

It basically cost Aussie Daniel Ricciardo his first victory of the season and a most famous one at the Formula One championships most glamorous track following his maiden pole position achievement on Saturday.

“We as a team owe Daniel a huge apology today as we failed to support him,” team boss Christian Horner said after the race as allegations of team partying the night before the race also surfaced.

It certainly took the well known smile off the raging Aussies face as he bit back with “There’s nothing you could say would make that any better. Just save it.” to his team following the incident.

Winner Lewis Hamilton was also investigated for an incident with Ricciardo where the Englishman cut a chicane to pass the Australian halfway during the race.

or their coaches will direct them to change their ways.

At the moment though, it can be a lucky dip as to which frees umpires pay but while they continue to award any free kicks for such infringements, players will obviously maintain this dangerous behaviour.

It is easier to focus and blame individual players like Kangaroo Lindsay Thomas, Cat Joel Selwood, Hawk Paul Puopolo, Bulldog Toby McLean and Lion Allen Christensen but it is happening so much more across the board these days which is why concerns are being raised.

The skills of today’s player to win the ball is far greater than in the past so really they don’t need to lower themselves to taking the ‘soft’ option.

It should be a stigma that no player would want to be remembered for.

It just requires the AFL to get stronger and have its umpires adjudicate the game by the laws that are already in place.

Nothing much has really changed over the past five years but it can no longer be ignored.

AFL NEWS

While every week is crucial, Port Adelaide faces its most important contest of the season on Sunday when it makes one of

its infrequent trips to the ‘G’ to meet an injury-riddled Collingwood.

The players have already signalled it as a season-defining moment for the club and it will be up to them to enforce their own thinking to keep their opponents languishing.

The Magpies had made a strong push up the ladder in previous weeks, with strong wins over Brisbane and Geelong before losing control of their clash against the Western Bulldog last week due to injury and lack of rotations.

The injuries to key players will be difficult for coach Nathan Buckley to replace, in particular Alex Fasolo (shoulder) and Darcy Moore (broken collarbone) who have been the side’s leading goal-kickers this season.

Many expect tormented forward Travis Cloke will return to the side to confront Port Adelaide.

Cloke had his best performance last week in the VFL since being dropped several weeks ago, kicking four goals, which would have Power coach Ken Hinkley preparing for his inclusion in the side this week.

On Hinkley’s plate though would be assessing whether likely Cloke opponent Jack Hombsch can take his place after coming off late in last week’s victory over Melbourne in Alice Springs with hamstring tightness.

If Hombsch isn’t right the door opens for Alipate Carlile to make a long-awaited return with Collingwood’s tall attackers potentially Cloke and US recruit Mason Cox needing attention.

However, the key for Port Adelaide will be to get on top in the midfield to ensure less of the ball is being seen in the Magpies’ forward 50.

Skipper Travis Boak, Robbie Gray, Brad Ebert, Ollie Wines, Hamish Hartlett, Sam Gray and latest Rising Star nominee Darcy Byrne-Jones got their hands on the ball more against the Demons last week and their further progression is vital for the Power to maintain a surge towards a finals berth.

Chad Wingard had his best game of the season last week as well and big forward Charlie Dixon is beginning to present strongly as expected. When both are wreaking havoc in attack, Port is hard to contain.

Both sides will ponder the same consequences leading into this week’s clash where the loser could effectively be out of contention for the top eight, especially if it is Collingwood.

Power ready for ‘G’ up

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Even with the absence of several key players, the Magpies are sure to be a fierce opponent on Sunday and if they bring the effort displayed in beating the Cats two weeks ago then the visitors could be in trouble.

The Power must be forceful from the outset and show improved ball skills around the ground to prevent any damage from turning the ball over which has been its greatest issue this season.

Adelaide is at home again after last week’s rousing triumph over GWS Giants.

Like its cross town rival, it was its big and small forward heroes in captain Taylor Walker and Eddie Betts who controlled the contest. Had they kicked straighter it would have been well out of the visitors reach much earlier.

It was the pressure from the midfield and defence on their Giants opponents that was the catalyst to their success.

St Kilda comes to town this week and the Crows cannot afford to take any thoughts

of their opposition being lesser of a side than the Giants or they could receive an unwanted surprise.

The Saints are capable on their day, proven by their ability to almost snatch victory over Hawthorn in Launceston earlier in the season.

They have had a couple of comfortable confidence-boosting wins over the past two weeks so they should not be underestimated.

Coach Don Pyke must insist on the same effort as last week from his troop which has been known to enter similar encounters a tad flat after big wins in the past.

Small defender Rory Laird is likely to return which one would anticipate to be at the expense of Nathan van Berlo while Pyke will also have the tough decision to make on where to play the Crouch brothers this week – AFL or SANFL.

St Kilda is near full strength.

NORTH MELBOURNE V RICHMONDFriday 7.20pm, Blundstone Arena

North Melbourne pulled off one of the great ‘muggings’ of the game, beating Richmond by 17 points in last year’s first elimination final at the MCG. The Tigers led by 13 points at half-time but collapsed to their third straight elimination final defeat in three years, losing by 17 points, 15.15 (105) to 14.4 (88). Jarrad Waite and Jack Riewoldt both finished with four goals. It was a mugging because just a week earlier, North had rested a host of star players in a 41-point loss to the Tigers at Docklands. As it turns out, that’s the Kangaroos’ only loss to Richmond from their past seven outings. This match is in Hobart, the AFL’s first Friday night football match in Tasmania and the first night game at the venue. North won their only previous meeting at the ground last year by 35 points.NORTH MELBOURNE: $1.45 RICHMOND: $2.75

HAWTHORN V MELBOURNESaturday 1.15pm, MCG

Hawthorn has won its last 12 games in a row against Melbourne – still well short of its 22-game record winning streak from 1973-84. The Hawks’ most recent win was its biggest of the streak, a 105-point victory at the MCG in round seven last year. Hawthorn won all four quarters, compiling 24.11 (155) to 7.8 (50) with four goals from Jarryd Roughead. Prior to that game, the Hawks won by margins of 50, 95, 66, 54 and 45 points – it hasn’t been close! Melbourne last beat Hawthorn in 2006 by 75 points at the MCG. Hawthorn now leads 43 wins to 35 at the MCG where the sides are now co-tenants. No game between these sides has been decided by less than a goal since Melbourne’s one-point win in 1999.HAWTHORN: $1.23 MELBOURNE: $4.20

CARLTON V BRISBANESaturday 1.40pm, Etihad Stadium

Brisbane has won its last three games in a row against Carlton – its best run against the Blues since winning its club record eight on end from 2002-08. The sides met twice last year. In round six at Docklands, the Lions came from a goal back at half-time to win by nine points, 12.12 (84) to 11.9 (75) with four goals from Daniel McStay. Levi Casboult scored four for the Blues. In round 20 under lights at the Gabba though, Brisbane had its biggest victory over Carlton since 2007, winning by 64 points, 20.11 (131) to 9.13 (67). It came despite the Blues opening with six goals to three in the first term. However, they were held goalless in the second as Brisbane scored five and were goalless again in the last. Andrew Walker scored four goals in a losing side. Both sides have four wins from eight clashes at Docklands.CARLTON: $1.26 BRISBANE: $3.85

GEELONG V GWS GIANTSSaturday 4.05pm, Simonds Stadium

Geelong hosts GWS in another stern test to the rising Giants’ validity as a serious finals contender. GWS has already beaten Geelong this season, having won by 13 points in Canberra in the second round, 13.11 (89) to 11.10 (76). Steve Johnson had 23 possessions and kicked two goals against his former team-mates. The margin flattered the Cats as GWS controlled the majority of the game. It was the Giants’ first win in five starts against Geelong. Their only previous trip to the Cattery was in 2012 when Geelong won by 65 points, 19.12 (126) to 9.7 (61). Harry Taylor went forward that day kicking six goals while Johnson scored five. GEELONG: $1.67 GWS GIANTS: $2.25

AFL PREVIEW ROUND11BY DION HAYMAN

GOLD COAST V SYDNEYSaturday 6.55pm, Metricon Stadium

Sydney has won all six of its previous matches against Gold Coast by comfortable margins ranging from 35 to 76 points. Four of those games were on the Gold Coast, the most recent being in round 10 last year when the Swans won by 52 points, 13.15 (93) to 5.11 (41). Kurt Tippett and Lance Franklin both kicked three goals as a goalless second term left the Suns 44-points adrift by half-time. Their return game last year was in the final round of the season at the SCG when Sydney set up the win with six unanswered goals in the first quarter. Another eight to two in the last produced a 63-point victory with Harry Cunningham and Sam Reid top scoring with three goals apiece.GOLD COAST: $10.00 SYDNEY: $1.05

FREMANTLE V ESSENDONSaturday 7.10pm, Domain Stadium

Essendon’s extraordinary run of away games against Fremantle continues. This will be the Bombers’ sixth straight match against the Dockers at Subiaco. Fremantle has won three and lost two of those past five games. Last year, the home side led 12.6 to 3.6 at three quarter-time before easing up to win by 28 points, 12.8 (80) to 7.10 (52). Matthew Pavlich finished with four goals. Fifteen of the 29 games between these sides have now been played at Subiaco. Fremantle leads 9-6 at home but trails overall 18 wins to 11. Fremantle last met Essendon in Melbourne in 2010 at Docklands when it won by 44 points. This is the seventh year in a row these sides will meet just once in the minor round.FREMANTLE: $1.28 EESENDON: $3.70

COLLINGWOOD V PORT ADELAIDESunday 12.40pm, MCG

Port Adelaide has won three of its last four games against Collingwood but the last two have been close. In 2014 at the MCG, Collingwood prevailed by six points, 11.10 (76) to 10.10 (70), with three goals from Travis Cloke. Last year at Adelaide Oval, Port led for most of the night before hanging on by just three points, 9.12 (66) to 9.9 (63). Six of their 26 games have now been decided by a single-digit margin. Both sides have three wins from such encounters. After eight meetings at the MCG, both sides are also level at four wins apiece. Port’s last came in the 2013 second elimination final when it overran the Magpies in the last term to win by 24 points. Overall, Collingwood leads 14 wins to 12.COLLINGWOOD: $1.77 PORT ADELAIDE: $2.05

WESTERN BULLDOGS V WEST COASTSunday 2.50pm, Etihad Stadium

West Coast has won six of its last eight meetings with the Western Bulldogs. The sides split their games last season. The Bulldogs won in the opening round at Docklands by 10 points, 14.13 (97) to 14.3 (87). That was despite five goals from Jamie Cripps. In round 21 in Perth though, the Eagles gradually built a 28-point lead by the last change before unleashing a final term of 9.2 to 1.1. The result was a 77-point win, 25.12 (162) to 13.7 (85). Josh Kennedy finished with 7.3 while Josh Hill added four goals. West Coast has a slight advantage at Docklands with five wins to four but has lost the last two. Their last win there against the Bulldogs was in 2012. The Eagles lead overall 31 wins to 16 with one draw.WESTERN BULLDOGS: $1.77 WEST COAST: $2.05

ADELAIDE V ST KILDASunday 4.10pm, Adelaide Oval

St Kilda travels to Adelaide to play its third straight game against the Crows at Adelaide Oval in just 35 rounds of football. The Crows have won both previous matches comfortably. They won by 79 points in the final round of 2014 in a match flagged as Ben Rutten’s and Lenny Hayes’ final AFL game for their respective clubs but also proved to be James Podsiadly’s and Brent Reilly’s swansong as well. They won by 46 points in round seven last year on the back of a six-goal haul from Eddie Betts. Josh Bruce kicked five for the Saints. The Crows have now won their last five games against St Kilda, one shy of their club record six set between 1998-2002. The Saints last beat the Crows at Docklands in 2011 by 103 points, triggering the dismissal of Neil Craig as coach.ADELAIDE: $1.17 ST KILDA: $5.00

STURT V ADELAIDE RESERVES Saturday 2.10pm, Peter Motley OvalBROADCAST: Live stream www.sanfl.com.au or the SANFL App

Top hosting third at Unley to round out Super Saturday, with the Double Blues in red hot form as the early season surprise packet. Adelaide has also had some highly impressive moments this season and while some of its fortunes depend on injuries at AFL level, the State league players are stepping up strongly to set the tone.

Part of the trouble for opposition teams in containing Sturt this year has been limiting the number of options that can bob up with two to three goals to spread the load. The likes of Kory Beard, Mark Evans and Josh Hone can all turn a game quickly with 20 minutes of latitude, throwing the impetus back onto Adelaide to shut its opponents down at the stoppages and minimise the opportunity to move into attack. In an entertaining tussle, Sturt looks set to continue its run.TIP: Sturt 1-12

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 10BY CHRIS KENDALL

PORT MAGPIES V GLENELG Saturday 2.10pm, Alberton OvalBROADCAST: Live stream www.sanfl.com.au or the SANFL App

Great to see all 10 clubs shape up on Saturday this week – a rarity in the SANFL of late. Firstly, the Magpies awoke spectacularly from their slumber a fortnight back when downing then top side South in impressive style, led by another stellar performance from Kane Mitchell. Glenelg’s season of inconsistency continued when it surprisingly knocked off Central three weeks back, to maintain its topsy-turvy form-line. Willie Rioli, Josh Scott and Clint Alleway combined for 11 goals to continue to build a spread in attack that has been missing in recent years.

The Magpies should have close to a full State league contingent to pick from and this could open up the Glenelg defence. Luke Reynolds continues to benefit from the opposition focus on John Butcher in attack and with the strength around the ball of the likes of Mitchell and Steve Summerton, the challenge will firmly be upon Tiger mentor Matthew Lokan to both shut down an outfit that booted 20 goals last start and work their own winning score. Most factors point toward the home team here.TIP: Port 25-36

SOUTH ADELAIDE V NORTH ADELAIDESaturday 2.10pm, Hickinbotham OvalBROADCAST: Live stream www.sanfl.com.au or the SANFL App

After winning their first six games, the Panthers have been brought back to earth in defeats to Sturt and Port in their last two matches. The season-ending injury to Tarak Redigolo placed a further dampener on their loss to Port, when they were never really in the hunt. North keeps improving from last season but a last quarter fade-out against Sturt cost it the ideal opportunity for the upset after leading for much of the day.

South would be very mindful of now being the hunted and coach Brad Gotch will be hammering the lid on the expectations that were sweeping Noarlunga early. He will be particularly mindful of some very sloppy ball movement across half back against Port that cannot be brought to this game as well. North’s running game looks ideally suited to the wide spaces here and will back its quick ball movement to try and match South’s speed when afforded time to move. It’s very tempting to pick the upset but the Panthers look set to bounce back.TIP: South Adelaide 1-12

WEST ADELAIDE V CENTRAL DISTRICT Saturday 2.10pm, City Mazda StadiumNo BROADCAST

Super SANFL Saturday continues at Richmond, with a home team still desperate to record its first win of 2016 against an outfit working to hold touch with the top five. West had its moments a fortnight back against Norwood but found it too hard coming from a scoreless opening term, while Central never looked in the hunt when going under to Glenelg. Bulldog coach Roy Laird was left to ponder the flatness of his charges, a trait they cannot afford here.

While the Bloods are yet to enter the ‘W’ column, they have shown some much better signs in their last few games but getting a good start is crucial. If they enter with the same mindset they showed against Norwood, then it allows Central to set the tone early and build a lead that West will again struggle to reel in. The key will largely be around the centre square, with the home team being reasonable in the clearances this year so Central will try to lock down their space to move. West is close to a win but it looks another week off at least.TIP: Central District 13-24

EAGLES V NORWOOD Saturday 2.10pm, Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval. BROADCAST: Life FM 107.9

The Eagles keep ticking over quietly, sitting in fourth and building a solid foundation for finals action while enjoying a three week break. Norwood was able to keep the foot down enough to withstand a West comeback after practically putting the game out of its opponent’s reach in the opening term. The Redlegs’ ball movement remained a little scrappy at times though and they still lack the fluency of past seasons but the confidence from the victory could prove a springboard to the season.

Generally, the home team has held sway at this venue in these match-ups and the benefit of an extra week off could prove vital if the match is tight leading into the last stanza. Norwood seems to be struggling to run games right out, particularly on bigger grounds, and Woodville Oval has presented some issues for it in past years with its wider flanks. A real danger game for the visitors that the Eagles seem ready to capitalise upon.TIP: Eagles 13-24

general sportCahill keen to front for SocceroosT

im Cahill has played down a hamstring strain four days out from the Socceroos’ first friendly with Greece as the veteran

threw down the gauntlet to the next generation of strikers.

Australia’s all-time leading goal-scorer has linked up with the national team in Sydney, four days out from the two-match series starting on Saturday at Allianz Stadium.

But the 36-year-old revealed he’s played his last two games with the injury for Chinese Super League side Hangzhou Greentown, managing 90 minutes in both last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Trent Sainsbury’s competition pacesetters Jiangsu Suning and a 1-0 loss to Shanghai SIPG the week before.

“I’ve got a slight hamstring, but I’ll never miss a camp,” Cahill said on Tuesday.

“We’ve got some of the best staff when it comes to physios and people who’ll look after you ... it’s all about just patching yourself up

and hopefully I’ll be available for selection.”

Cahill is one of six Asia-based players returning to the Socceroos fray for the Greece games which, unlike last weekend’s 2-1 loss to England, fall in an international window.

His injury aside, coach Ange Postecoglou may opt not to play his team’s most experienced and prolific goal-scorer, having vowed to shuffle

the decks in his last opportunity to experiment with his line-up before September’s final World Cup qualifiers.

Also at Postecoglou’s disposal up front is Greece-born sharpshooter Apostolos Giannou and Brisbane’s Jamie Maclaren, who made his international debut against England.

Windies tour not a job audition says LangerI

nterim coach Justin Langer is treating Australia’s tour of the West Indies as a learning experience, not an audition for

cricket’s top job.

The man considered the likely heir to national coach Darren Lehmann’s throne said the ODI tri-series was not a chance for him to prove his worth.

“I don’t see it as an audition, I see it as an experience and a great opportunity,” Langer said.

“There is no doubt I will learn lessons.”

With Lehmann, who is taking a break, expected to stay on until the end of the 2019 Ashes and World Cup, the upcoming series against the West Indies and South Africa

comes at a peculiar time for Australia in the 50-over game.

With the second half of last summer largely geared towards the World Twenty20, attention is again starting to turn to the long-term set-up of the national ODI side.

Spinners Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon will again go head-to-head, but with turning tracks expected to be dished up in the Caribbean, there is scope for both of them to join allrounder Glenn Maxwell in the same XI.

“In Guyana maybe we will play more than just the one of them,” Langer said.

There is a similar logjam at the top of the order, where Usman Khawaja has been in and out of the opening role in place of the regular combination of David Warner and Aaron Finch.

But Langer said there was no reason why all three couldn’t play - as they did during the World Twenty20 when one played lower down the order.

“Three into three goes,” Langer said when asked how he would squeeze one out.

Australia play its first match against West Indies on Sunday, while South Africa plays the hosts on Friday.

Prince Alfred OC is proving to be a driven outfit this year.

The Reds took over the top mantle in Division 1 following a forceful 84-point victory over Henley last week.

The well publicised issues with respected long-time servant of the club James Thomas’ daughter’s rare cancer battle seem to have bonded this group stronger than ever.

They have become a staunch mob on field as much as off and this could propel them to greater success coming their way.

Unley Mercedes Jets is next for Hayden Jolly, Brock Castree and Adam Perryman to punish.

Despite ladder positions, the Jets will be a tougher opponent than the Sharks presented.

Reds driven to succeed

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

With another win behind them, over Port District by 39 points, Hugh Watson, James O’Sullivan and Nick Wark from the Jets will be growing in belief that they do belong in the top flight.

Henley heads to Goodwood Oval on Saturday.

The Saints escaped with a contentious two-point win last week but cannot continue performing in such a manner if they expect to continue their run of finals football.

The Sharks would welcome playing Goodwood Saints down on form and see Saturday as their best chance to break their season drought.

With much of the ball in their defensive half last week, Nick Burgess, Jake Carrick Smith and Reid Pinto were among the Saints’ best but coach Trent Mills would like his forwards to have

more exposure this week.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Hawks which led for all but the final minute of last week’s contest.

The result will have them riled for victory this week against Tea Tree Gully in a tough clash back home.

The Gullies were stunned by Adelaide University last week which cost them top spot.

The Blacks put in one of their most impressive performances of recent years to upset the then ladder leaders by a booming 35 points.

Andrew Alesci, Seb Paynter and Jonathan Schulz will be out to maintain their newly found position in the top five when Rostrevor OC visits University Oval on Saturday.

Payneham Norwood Union took over three quarters to avert the challenges made by ROCs last week.

The Falcons ensured they held onto the crucial third spot on the ladder through the taxing 33-point victory.

Jack O’Leary, Nick Bauld and Luke Clark did what was needed though but coach Garry McIntosh will be hoping for more against Port District this week.

Vili’s Division 3

A notable victory has seen Broadview leap from ninth into the top five.

The Tigers are now back in the chase for the Division 2 flag following a poised performance to beat Gaza by 58 points.

Jadyn Ryan and Brayden De Prinse can really prove their right to be mentioned among the title fancies with a similar effort against ladder leader Modbury at home on Saturday.

The Hawks continued to show why they were a current top pick for the premiership with a commanding 91-point triumph over St Peters OC last week.

Michael Bennett and Tim Davey will be keen to squash another emerging club’s hopes.

The Eagles appear to be a step down from the major contenders but at this stage of the season, they will need to take some points

kilburn and Plympton will see this week’s clash as a good chance to ease the pressure near the relegation zone. Kilburn,

bottom, saw its defence cop a battering against Athelstone to concede 30.13. James O’Loughlin, Jason Sandercock and Robert long were among the best for Kilburn. Plympton struggled to break through the tight Mitcham defence last week, the Bulldogs kept to 5.11 with Kieren Nelson, Stuart Taverner and Thomas Holtham among the best. Plympton can get up 14-28 points.

Golden Grove and Gepps Cross meet at Harpers Field. The Kookaburras are sixth but two wins and percentage behind the fifth team. Last week Golden Grove lost a thriller to Seaton Ramblers with Dashiell Ravlich, Todd Sheppard and Gavin Hughes leading the way. Gepps Cross has found the competition tough again with just two wins. Last week it held out Walkerville by 14 points with

Tigers leap up

Daniel Mykytyschyn, Ashley Benz and Daniel Capogreco standing tall. Grove can win by 26-38 points.

Pembroke Old Scholars will make life tough at home for Walkerville in the clash of the Kings and Cats. Pembroke was ultra impressive in beating Flinders Park by 66 points last week after trailing by three goals in the first quarter. Three-times Magarey Medallist James Allan was the standout, while Henry Mason (four goals) and Eljay Connors also starred. Walkerville missed against Gepps Cross last week with Damien Hutchings, Stuart Callary and Josh Partington playing strongly. The Kings to rule by 66-82 points.

Seaton Ramblers and Athelstone should provide a sterling battle at Pedlar Reserve. The Rams beat Golden Grove by four points last week to hold fifth place with Bradyn Wild, Todd Gates and Darren Tremaine among the best. Athelstone stormed to the top of the ladder

by crunching Kilburn by 118 points with Luke Rander playing a great game to kick 10 goals. One of the best matches of the season, the Raggies by 14-26 points.

Mitcham and Flinders Park also looks an outstanding game at Mitcham. The Hawks beat Plympton by 57 points last week with Daniel Loots, James Daly and William Ballard among the prime movers. Flinders Park lost its first game of the season, taking a whack against Pembroke OS by 66 points after leading by three goals at quarter time. Mitchell Hall, Jay Hansen and Matthew Morrell were best for the Reds. The Hawks can get up 12-26 points.

from sides above them.

Returning to Klemzig Oval will improve their prospects when second-placed Old Ignatians visit on Saturday.

Old Iggies were challenged last week against PHOS Camden, but held on by 11 points.

Cameron Ortlepp and David Boyd should realise their present form is making them the hunted as Old Ignatians lose the ‘hunter’ tag.

The Phantoms again were just unable to lift enough to eclipse a top outfit which is why they are not among the higher ranks here.

To put added pressure on other finals aspirants, PHOS Camden will need to find that missing quality soon, starting with Portland.

The Thunder gave Scotch OC a fright last week though so they are showing they are in a similar boat to their weekend opponent.

Third-placed Scotch OC was not convincing

in its stumbling 14-point win over Portland and will need to find more from more than just Lachlan Giles and William Thorpe, especially against premiership candidates like Sacred Heart OC which it faces this week.

Lachlan Button and Matthew Delmenico continue to highlight SHOC’s capabilities for success this season, beating the Lions by 44 points last week.

Nine News Division 5

The second-half of the season kicks off with Edwardstown and Colonel Light Gardens meeting in a vital game for both sides. In

round one the Lions beat the Towns by nine points but Towns sit fourth on the ladder with the Lions now sixth. Last week Edwardstown proved too strong for Hope Valley away, winning by 39 points. Joshua Teisseire, Toby Case and Jack Horgan (four goals) shone for Towns. Colonel Light Gardens has enjoyed a fair start to its season up a grade, last week falling away against Eastern Park by 70 points. Josh Bennett (four goals), Emmett Wood and Jakob Napier played well. Towns can keep the ball rolling this week by 20-34 points.

Hope Valley and Pooraka are in the lower reaches of the ladder but should provide a tight contest. The Demons saw good games

The good ol’ Navy Blues finally got to sing their song for the first time in 2016 with a resilient 25-point triumph over

Rosewater last week.

It would have given the Pulteney boys much needed confidence to get the monkey off the back and now can look to add a few more wins over the second half of the season.

Beating the fourth-placed Bulldogs proved that Pulteney is better than results have shown with the likes of Alex Forbes, Sheldon Currie, Andrew Kimber and Joel Aish (11 goals) capable on their day.

However, the Navy Blues will need a similar performance to topple another big scalp in third-placed Lockleys this week.

The Demons knocked Hectorville off top spot last week with a composed 19-point win to keep all sides aware of their ability to be a premiership threat.

There will be no favours either for Pulteney despite its first win from Lockleys’ Sean Stormonth and Alex Paton.

Towns, Lions set for arm wrestle

No more blues for Pulteney

Rosewater must head to Smithfield on Saturday to respond to last week’s effort which won’t be an easy bounce back.

The Panthers were most intimidating in thumping Elizabeth last week by 118 points.

It highlighted that Smithfield’s Anthony Thompson and James Bain don’t take it easy on any side and the Bulldogs aren’t any different.

The Eagles must fly from the nest again to face CBCOC in the East Parkland this week.

The Dolphins coughed up a chance to upset a top side in Blackfriars OS with their inaccuracy over three quarter before the Hounds ran home their ascendancy in the final term last week.

Blackfriars OS’s Lachlan Bayly, Patrick Harmer and co can’t continue to leave the door open for their opposition in future games though.

Now back on top, these Hounds will be out to consolidate against Greenacres on Saturday.

The Dragons’ thrilling one-point success

from Devin Payne, Wade Denham and Zac White in their loss to Edwardstown last week. Pooraka again lost a close game, last week losing to Salisbury by three points at home after having 23 scoring shots to 16. Brad Batten, Darren Sharp (three goals) and Ty Kirkwood (three goals) were among the best. The Demons by 1-12 points.

Kenilworth is facing a big test to win its first game of the season when it hosts North Haven. The Kookaburras finished strongly against Colonel Light Gardens to fall by one point two rounds ago with Shaun Clarke among the best. North Haven was outstanding in beating Westminster Old Scholars away by 17 points. Ross Merrett, Brett Pederson and Matthew Murnane were among the best, while Cohen Mattner kicked

over Glenunga will have boosted belief but the Clark-Rantasa brothers – James and Jarrad – will need to show it against a higher performing side this week.

Kicking 21 goals, one would think that side had come out the winners.

But surprisingly it wasn’t the case for the Rams whose confident attacking style is lacking some defensive aptitude in the first half of the season.

It is what coach Brian Leys will be continuing to develop with his troop at Glenunga in preparation for another end-to-end contest against Hectorville.

five goals. Hard to see anything but a Magpie win by 48-62 points.

Westminster Old Scholars and Salisbury meet in probably the match of the round in a fifth versus second clash. So tight is the competition that the Dragons went from top to fifth with their loss to North Haven last week, Jared Shattock, Ben Fisher (four goals) and Thomas Drew among the Dragons’ better performers. Salisbury edged out Pooraka by three points with seven fewer scoring shots. Brad Horjus (four goals), Geoff Tume and Matthew Fleming were solid Magpie players. A desperation to stay in touch with the top three could just get the Dragons home by 10-26 points. Eastern Park has a bye.

Brahma Lodge faces one of the toughest tests in this competition this week, beating unbeaten West Croydon. The

Tigers, fourth, had too much firepower for Adelaide Lutheran last week to win by 83 points with Dene Steele outstanding. West Croydon made short work of Mitchell Park last week with David Campbell (four goals) leading a long list of top players. The Hawks can swoop again by 22-38 points.

Mitchell Park and Mawson Lakes should have a lot of incentive for a top showing this week. The Lions were no match for West Croydon last week, going down by 102 points at home. Brandon Walczak continued his fine season to be best. Mawson Lakes was beaten by Trinity Old Scholars by 43 points, Nathan Bruce-Gordon starring. Even away from home the Saints can win by 12-26 points.

Woodville South is sitting second and looks likely to hold that position against Adelaide Lutheran. The Cats were too strong for Ingle Farm to win by 36 points last week, Ramah Ahmed (eight goals) brilliant for his side. Adelaide Lutheran lost to Brahma Lodge by 83 points last week with Daniel Moos a shining light for the Bulldogs. The Cats can

Central United will be barking at the bit to snap back quickly from a disappointing loss last week.

Already having made one of the longest trips in the Channel Nine Adelaide Football League to Flinders University, the Bulldogs strong fight over the last quarter and a half of last week’s clash came to no avail in a high scoring affair where both sides kicked 20 goals.

Returning to their home venue on Saturday should give them more comfort against Unley Mercedes Jets, another outfit the Bulldogs will need to defeat to keep any semblance of top four aspirations alive.

Flinders University would have breathed a large sigh of relief as it continued to present its own case for finals football this year.

The Crabs are at home again with North Pines, coming off a tight 15-point downer to Adelaide University, to make its own long trek south.

Flinders Uni’s Damian Chesson and Brayden

win by 38-52 points.

Ingle Farm looks to have the depth to cover Fitzroy on Saturday at Rowe Park. The Bulldogs went down to Woodville South by 36 points with Ian Pryor among his side’s better players. Fitzroy proved too strong for Houghton Districts by 46 points with Sean Dixon leading the way with six goals. The Bulldogs by 22-38 points.

Trinity Old Scholars and Houghton Districts look evenly matched in a five versus seven contest. The Lions had 43 points to spare against Mawson Lakes last week, Ryan Clarke (three goals) among his side’s best. The Raiders battled strongly but found Fitzroy too good by 46 points. Scott Fitzgerald was best for the Raiders. Home ground says Trinity by 20-38 points.

Reeves will be out to ensure the margin doesn’t get as close this week.

Prince Alfred OC gained a valuable buffer away from its three closest rivals chasing finals berths with a 23-point victory over Unley Mercedes Jets last week.

The Reds host St Pauls OS which is in a similar position as Central United.

Salisbury West always had the Saints measure last week, winning by eight goals, and looms as an intimidating proposition for Payneham Norwood Union on Saturday.

Baker looking Imposing for OaksW

arwick Farm trainer Bjorn Baker is chasing his second Group One win in as

many weeks with Imposing Lass in the Saturday’s Queensland Oaks (2400m) on the newly reconstructed Eagle Farm track.

Baker claimed his first Group One victory with Music Magnate storming home to win the Doomben 10,000 last Saturday.

Imposing Lass is at the top of the Oaks market order, coming off a last-start third behind fellow rivals Kebede and Sebring Sally in the Group Two The Roses (2000m) at Doomben two weeks ago.

“I’m very confident with her, I thought her run was super last week,” Baker said.

After being successful at her previous four starts, Imposing Lass’ winning run was brought to an end last start but Baker is confident she can turn the tables on the two ahead of her in The Roses.

The Makfi filly had worked her way up through the classes since winning her maiden at Hawkesbury in November last year and showed her Queensland Oaks credentials with an all the way win in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) at the Gold Coast on 7 May.

Baker said that the Queensland Oaks had been a long range plan after her maiden victory and he has no doubt that she will run the 2400m of the fillies’ classic.

“She is out of a Zabeel mare and just needed a long break after her last prep, so we did that and you

can see the benefit,” he said.

“I have no worries at all about her staying the trip, the family is full of stayers.”

Local Adelaide trainer Leon Macdonald knows his hope Beluga Blue will cope physically with the distance of the Queensland Oaks but concedes she needs to be mentally on her game.

Therefore, Macdonald is putting the blinkers back on Beluga Blue who went wide at her first distance test when fourth in the South Australian Classic (2500m).

The filly was doing her best work at the business end of the Group Three race in which she finished 2-1/2 lengths behind the winner, another Oaks rival Chabaud.

“We took the blinkers off for the South Australian Classic to try to make her settle,” Macdonald said.

“But she had to come wide off the track and that didn’t help.

“At least I know she does run a mile-and-a-half.”

Stable rider Clare Lindop is staying at home so Macdonald has secured Glen Colless for Saturday.

“He is a strong rider and he should be able to handle her,” Macdonald said.

Punters may have to look towards the wet trackers on the first day back at Eagle Farm on Saturday which may present some value with the likes of Ashlee Marie and emergency Sahara Siren coming into the mix alongside more fancied Ambience and Chabaud.
