What is going on with the SANFL this year?

A once buoyant competition appears to have been hijacked with a stagnant draw and lack of television coverage.

Programming has been the most confusing with only four matches down for most weekends and just two rounds when all sides play.

The inclusion of the two AFL Reserves outfits was to ensure there would be no byes in our local competition but the league in its wisdom has given two sides per round a break for the majority of the season.

Just as our clubs build some momentum they are faced with a week off, halting the flow of what their coaches would no doubt like to see continue.

Sure the SANFL is trying to stretch the minor round out to 22 weeks but when the AFL sides were introduced most accepted that it would be only an 18-week competition.

There is the potential, though, to extend the season to cover 20 or 21 weeks simply by including the State fixture and perhaps one weekend where all clubs have a

break or this can be split over two weeks.

The current draw restricts fans connecting with their club which the competition must be all about.

With such instability, marketing of games becomes harder for both the league and the individual clubs to formalise as well.

Accordingly, it will be interesting to see what crowd turns up for this week’s State encounter against the Big V.

The timing of matches over different weekends has been difficult to fathom too.

The season opener between Norwood and Port Adelaide on a Thursday night faced direct challenges from a Socceroos clash at Adelaide Oval at the same time which proved detrimental to crowd numbers.

Round four saw two games opposed to a Power match on Sunday when Saturday afternoon was free. Last Saturday the two Adelaide outfits in the SANFL and AFL respectively were up against each other – something that should never happen.

Such conflict is improved upon over the remainder of the season

SANFL losing its impact

With all the derogatory news we hear about Australian tennis players (two in particular), it is great to hear some good news.

Aussie wildcard Jordan Thompson recorded his most important win of his career this week to advance through to the second round the French Open.

The 22 year-old, who jumped into the world top 100 for the first time at the beginning of the month, defeated Serb qualifier Laslo Djere and met Croat veteran and 27th seed Ivo Karlovic next.

Hopefully he can go further at the clay Grand Slam at Roland Garros along with the likes of John Millman, Sam Groth, Sam Stosur and Daria Gavrolova.

Flamboyant West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle can’t seem to stay out of the news for the wrong reasons, now taking pot shots at former Australian opener Chris Rogers, Aussie legend Ian Chappell and former England captain Andrew Flintoff in his latest autobiography Six Machine.

This will make England’s domestic T20 competition interesting when the two line-up for Somerset which Rogers will skipper.

He also continued to play down his comments made to former Channel 10 commentator Mel McLaughlin during a match at the last year’s Big Bash.

THUMBS DownTHUMBS UPBY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

but they are little things that the league shouldn’t allow.

Some disillusioned supporters of the local competition would say it is the big arm of the AFL wanting to control all levels of football but the way the SANFL is treating the AFL Reserves, it is hard to believe this is even true.

The stop-start fixture prevents our AFL sides from having the consistency they need to assist in desired player development requirements.

Adelaide, in particular, would be disappointed that Brad Crouch, who needs regular match time to gain a return to the AFL, is not getting that at the moment.

Port Adelaide likewise is stilted from working on its improvements needed for real assault on finals football in the AFL.

Obviously, there is the argument about whether these sides should be in the SANFL in the first place but while they are there must be greater assistance from the league to ensure they are getting the most from their involvement.

The television coverage isn’t a great marketing tool for the SANFL either.

There seems to be more favouritism given to the two AFL sides as to which games Channel Seven broadcast.

Hopefully the league learns from its mistakes this season and returns to some normality next year, otherwise support could diminish totally.

3 SPORTSBEAT // 26 MAY 2016

The lead-up to and the weekend of the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round is one of the most symbolic weeks of the AFL football season and we look forward to our two sides savouring the moment with victories on Saturday.• The round honours Indigenous icon Sir

Doug Nicholls for the first time and will bear his name from now on – Nicholls, who played 54 games with Fitzroy, was the first Indigenous player to represent Victoria at state level and was a brilliant all-round athlete who later became the Governor of South Australia after a life devoted to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

• All 18 clubs will wear themed jumpers designed by past club stars, present player family members or club dignitaries, with each having significance to club history

• A big appointment by the league in this Indigenous week with the announcement that Labor senator Nova Peris is leaving politics to take up the vacant AFL head of diversity role, previously held by Jason Mifsud who left earlier this year to pursue a position in the Victorian Government himself

• It’s been all about the ‘red’ card this week – for vicious attacks, it’s probably time a ‘send-off’ rule is introduced (it’s at every other level of football in Australia) – at the moment we see sides impeded by losing a player for the remainder of a game so it’s obviously fair for the infringers to also be restrained – should it be a joint decision among officiating umpires or can one make the call? – how does the Match Review Panel then adjudicate further penalties? –

would the game in which a player is sent off included in any suspensions? – there are still a few decisions to be made for it to be handled correctly

• Channel Seven commentator Basil Zemplis obviously got a bit mixed up during the Giants/Bulldogs clash last Sunday – GWS coach Leon Cameron had agreed to speak during the match from the coaches box but didn’t appreciate having a question asked as if he was the Bulldogs coach (well, he did play for the Bulldogs in his time)

• Disappointment for Eagle Tom Cole’s family who were flown to Adelaide last weekend to see a late debut of their son after being declared a starter by coach Adam Simpson, only to discover Josh Kennedy did make the contest in time (arriving in town the latest possible moment to stay with his pregnant wife in Perth just in case she went into labour) and Cole misses out – hopefully for the lad, his chance comes soon

• Sure players like to play a bit of cards on their down time but normally one would think Poker, Uno, maybe even Snap, not so for a group of Magpies Adam Treloar, Jack Crisp and Jonathan Marsh who like playing Yu-Gi-Oh! (what the???) – it’s supposed to be based on a Japanese comic of the same name

• Hopefully the VFL isn’t as tough as players from last weekend – the heart and soul of the Northern Bullants Brent Bransgrove had announced that his 100th game last week would be his last but the 27 year-old re-aggravated a chronic hip injury in the warm-up and following medical intervention, he didn’t take the field until five minutes remained in the final term in which time he still managed two handpasses and a tackle before being chaired off for the final time

AFL NEWS

The AFL’s concocted juggernaut makes a rare trip to Adelaide this weekend and the Crows must be wary of what it can inflict.

GWS Giants have come of age this year – so much so that some are talking them up as genuine premiership threats this season.

They have succeeded recent challenges and the Crows are simply another side they will wish to conquer.

The clash at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night has the hallmarks of a blockbuster but it is more about Adelaide sticking with its more fledgling opponent than the other way around.

It is imperative that the Crows’ skill efficiency level is high as the Giants will be quick to pounce on any errant turnovers presented.

This could potentially be a high scoring contest between the competition’s biggest scorers.

Adelaide has been a five-point better side than the Giants so far this season but the visitors have been far better on the defensive side than its weekend opponent.

This is where the Crows need to improve and coach Don Pyke knows it. His only injury concern is in defence, with the club assessing Luke Brown’s ankle during the week.

The possible return of small defender Rory Laird could come at the right time for the home side but he could actually be thrust into the middle in a stopping capacity, particularly considering the height in the Giants forward line.

However, it will take a team effort to counter the Giants’ wave of runners through the middle, including co-captain Callan Ward, Stephen Coniglio, Dylan Shiel, Tom Scully, Toby Greene, Lachie Whitfield, Josh Kelly and the list goes on.

If the Giants have a weakness, it is in defence which will be further destabilised with the loss of Tim Mohr and Matt Butane, both injured last week, added to co-captain Phil Davis, Aidan Corr and Caleb Marchbank already on the sidelines, although Davis may come up to face his old side.

Adelaide can exploit this with Eddie Betts who has been quiet of late but is sure to step up for Indigenous Round and Charlie Cameron and Wayne Milera are destined to follow.

Skipper Taylor Walker regained some valuable touch last week against Gold Coast but will need to go on with it on Saturday night while Josh Jenkins needs to be a target as well.

However, much of the Giants’ pressure is generated by their strong midfield so this is where the Crows must get on top early through physicality around the ball, tougher than usual

tackling and winning the clearances.

Adelaide cannot afford to allow the true giants of GWS such as Jeremy Cameron, Rory Lobb, Jonathon Patton along with enigmatic Steve Johnson in its attacking region to see plenty of the ball.

All easy to say no doubt but it is nothing less than is required if the Crows are to withstand a Giant onslaught.

Port Adelaide treks to the Red Centre for its Indigenous Round contest against a resurgent Melbourne in Alice Springs on Saturday.

The Power may not have won last week but showed signs of recapturing its familiar running game and building of intensity at the ball carrier.

Suspended defender Tom Jonas will be missed, especially in the long term, but the Demons’ smaller forward options can be contained in his absence.

It gives coach Ken Hinkley the opportunity to bring in another running player like Sam Gray, Jimmy Toumpas or Sam Colquhoun this week.

Port Adelaide can then run its opponents all over Traegar Park while working at being more direct in its avenue to key forward Charlie Dixon up front.

Darcy Byrne-Jones (ankle) is being monitored but Hamish Hartlett should be okay after suffering a corked leg against West Coast.

SYDNEY V NORTH MELBOURNEFriday 7.20pm, SCG

North Melbourne undoubtedly faces its biggest test this season when it takes on Sydney at the SCG. The Kangaroos have won only two of their last 11 games against the Swans. More encouragingly though, those two wins against the Swans were both in Sydney and came in the last two seasons. In 2014, North stunned Sydney with a 43-point win at the SCG in round four when Aaron Black and Daniel Wells both scored three goals. North won 13.13 (91) to 6.12 (48), the Swans’ lowest score against the Roos since 1990. Then last year in the first semi-final at Homebush, North broke the mould of elimination final winners beaten the next week, toppling Sydney by 26 points, 11.11 (77) to 7.9 (51). Jarrad Waite scored three goals. Buddy Franklin didn’t play that match but has nine goals in his last two games against the Kangaroos. Surprisingly, North leads 15 wins to 12 at the SCG.SYDNEY: $1.39 NORTH MELBOURNE: $3.00

BRISBANE V HAWTHORNSaturday 1.15pm, Gabba

Hawthorn’s last three clashes against Brisbane and seven of their last eight have all been played in Launceston. The other was at the MCG. Hawthorn finally travels to the Gabba for the first time since 2008 when it won a high-scoring game by 12 points. Brisbane hasn’t won at home against Hawthorn since 2007 when it scored a 25-point win. The Lions lead comfortably at home 11 wins to five. However, recent outings against the Hawks have been a disaster. Hawthorn has won their last six clashes since being upset in Launceston by 42 points in 2009. Hawthorn’s longest winning streak against Brisbane is nine games from 1990-95. Hawthorn’s biggest winning margin is 99 points in 1994.BRISBANE: $9.00 HAWTHORN: $1.06

MELBOURNE V PORT ADELAIDESaturday 1.40pm, Traeger Park

Port Adelaide has won its last six games in a row against Melbourne as well as 11 of the last 14 since 2007. The streak represents the Power’s longest against the Dees. Melbourne last beat Port in Darwin in 2011 by 21 points. This game is in Alice Springs where the sides have met for the last two seasons. In 2014, Port won by 20 points, 14.11 (95) to 11.9 (75) after leading by just four points at three quarter-time. Jay Schulz, Robbie Gray and Justin Westhoff all kicked two goals. Port won by three points at Adelaide Oval later that season before the sides returned to the red centre last May, resulting in a 61-point win to Port, 18.7 (115) to 8.6 (54). Schulz finished with four goals and Gus Monfries three. Port leads overall 18 wins to 11.MELBOURNE: $1.70 PORT ADELAIDE: $2.15

ST KILDA V FREMANTLESaturday 4.05pm, Etihad Stadium

Fremantle snapped a two-game losing streak against the Saints with a 37-point win at Docklands in round 19 last year. The Dockers won 15.6 (96) to 8.11 (59) after opening with seven goals to two in the first quarter. This will be the sides’ fourth straight clash at Docklands. The Saints won by 71 points in the final round of 2013 after Fremantle rested half of its side for the finals. In round 18, 2014, the Saints won again by 58 points with Nick Riewoldt scoring four goals. The sides have met at Docklands 10 times with Fremantle winning just twice. Before last year, they also won in 2012 by 13 points. Only once in 31 games has either side scored 20 goals in this fixture and that was when they first met in 1995. The Saints lead 17 wins to 14. AFL PREVIEW ROUND10BY DION HAYMAN

ESSENDON V RICHMONDSaturday 6.55pm, MCG

Richmond has won its last three games against Essendon – its longest winning streak against the Bombers since 2007-08. It’s a mark it hasn’t bettered since winning nine in a row from 1972-76. The Tigers won twice last year. In round nine, they led narrowly at every change, delivering a 13-point win, 10.12 (72) to 8.11 (59) with 33 touches from Brandon Ellis. In round 22, the Tigers trailed 1.4 to 2.0 at quarter-time but sailed away to a 27-point win, 10.14 (74) to 7.5 (47). Cale Hooker finished with three of the Bombers’ seven goals. These sides are 15-15 since the turn of the century. At the MCG, Essendon leads by one win, 33 to 32 with one draw. They last met away from the MCG in 1994 at Princes Park.ESSENDON: $7.50 RICHMOND: $1.08

ADELAIDE V GWS GIANTSSaturday 7.10pm, Adelaide Oval

GWS claimed its first win against the Adelaide Crows at its sixth attempt when the sides last met at the Sydney Showgrounds in round eight last year. The Giants had a 20-point lead at half-time and wrapped up the game in the third term with another 8.3 to 4.1. Cam McCarthy finished with four goals and Toby Greene three while Taylor Walker scored four for the Crows. Their only previous meeting at Adelaide Oval was in 2014 where the Crows careered away to a 65-point win, 21.11 (137) to 10.12 (72). Patrick Dangerfield was the star with five goals while Josh Jenkins scored four. The highest goal-kicker in this fixture though is Tom Lynch who scored 10 against the Giants in 2013. Geelong has won its last seven games in a row against Carlton since the Blues last beat it by 36 points at the MCG in 2010. The Cats’ longest winning streak against Carlton is 12 straight wins – their first 12 meetings from 1897 to 1902. Their lone meeting last year was at the MCG when the Cats opened with six goals to two in the first term. They increased that lead at every change to win by 77 points, 22.8 (140) to 9.9 (63). Jordan Murdoch and Troy Menzel scored four goals for their respective sides. Menzel would score only five more goals for Carlton in his final 10 matches. This game is at Docklands where Carlton has failed to meet Geelong in 13 attempts.CARLTON: $6.00 GEELONG: $1.12

COLLINGWOOD V WESTERN BULLDOGSSunday 2.50pm, MCG

The Western Bulldogs have won their last two games against Collingwood. They last won three in a row against the Magpies from 2006-08. Collingwood won six in a row against the Dogs from 2010-13. The last two games between these sides have been tight. In 2014 at Docklands, the Bulldogs won by eight points, 16.10 (106) to 15.8 (98), despite six goals from Travis Cloke. Last year, the Dogs won by 18 points at the same ground, 15.14 (104) to 13.8 (86), despite five goals from Darcy Moore. This game is at the MCG where the sides last met in 2011, resulting in a 48-point win to the Magpies. The Pies lead 15 wins to seven at the MCG. COLLINGWOOD: $2.85 WESTERN BULLDOGS: $1.42

WEST COAST V GOLD COASTSunday 4.10pm, Domain Stadium

Gold Coast has never beaten West Coast but did manage a draw when they last met last year at Carrara. It was tight all day with the Suns kicking 12.11 (83) to 11.17 (83). Tom Lynch booted four for the Suns while Josh Kennedy, Dom Sheed and Jack Darling scored two apiece for the Eagles. West Coast had won their previous six encounters including their previous one at Subiaco by a whopping 92 points in round seven last year. Kennedy and Elliot Yeo kicked four goals that day as the Eagles won 21.9 (135) to 6.7 (43). Their biggest win over the Suns was in 2012 when Quinten Lynch booted four goals in a 126-point win while their closest encounter, prior to last year’s draw, saw the Eagles win by three points in 2014, also in Perth.WEST COAST: $1.01 GOLD COAST: $17.00

STATE GAME PREVIEWBY CHRIS KENDALL

SOUTH AUSTRALIA V VICTORIASunday 1.40pm, Adelaide Oval Live video and audio stream through www.sanfl.com.au and the SANFL AppRadio: Life FM 107.9

The pride of South Australia and Victoria square off Sunday at the home of local football, when the Big V makes the journey across the border. Former West Adelaide grand final coach Andrew Collins will lead Victora, while legendary mentor Graham Cornes will guide South Australia. With no rain forecast for the day both teams can take taller lineups in with a reasonable degree of confidence.

There is plenty of experience in the SA group, particularly around the ball. Magarey Medallists Joel Cross and Zane Kirkwood look set to share duties working at the feet of Redleg Sam Baulderstone, while former Melbourne onballer Jordie McKenzie should also be rewarded for his strong start to the season at North Adelaide. With Port skipper Steven Summerton also proven at state level, and able to work off half forward, it will be a tough division for Victoria to contain.Werribee’s Matt Hanson and Michael Sodomaco have been excellent for the Tigers around the ball this year, however, and can break the game open quickly, particularly with their work at stoppages. The challenge for SA will be to maintain an attacking mentality while still defending quickly, but the versatility of the local onball brigade will give Victoria plenty of food for thought.

There will be plenty of headaches in the local attack for Collins to try and contain. The idea of South spearhead Brett Eddy at centre half forward and Norwood’s Lewis Johnston working from the goalsquare will give him plenty to think about. Port Melbourne’s Brody Mihocek should get first look at Johnston, while Sturt’s Brodie Martin has also been dangerous at times as a roaming forward at the top of the 50 this season. Eagles Lachlan McGregor and James Boyd can also provide smaller options working at the feet of the talls to give bite around the packs but they will need to be mindful of the creativity of the likes of Box Hill’s David Mirra and North Ballarat’s Luke Kiel. Williamstown’s Peter Faulks and Werribee’s Jake Wilson also provide plenty

of run and polish from the back half and will need to be closely monitored, possibly forcing Cornes to deploy a defensive forward onto at least one. Bulldog Travis Schiller has been in stellar form this season and can offer plenty also from half forward and is able to rotate on the ball.

The local defence will also be tough to crack. Norwood skipper Alex Georgiou looks set to hold the key defensive post, possibly standing Casey Scorpion spearhead Tim Smith, with ever improving Blue Fraser Evans working from a pocket alongside. Eagle Luke Thompson can also hold down the other pocket. Sturt’s Kory Beard looks the ideal option at centre half back to take Williamstown’s Sam Dunell and with either Panther Cameron Hitchcock or Redleg Andrew Kirwan working from the flanks, they will need to be mindful of allowing too much latitude to the likes of Footscray’s Will Hayes and Werribee’s Scott Sherlock around attack.

Glenelg’s Andrew Bradley will give plenty of hard-nosed grunt around the contests and if fellow Tiger Christian Howard is afforded space around the wide Adelaide Oval wings, then he can break the game open with his penetrating disposal. Footscray pair Jordan Russell and Lauchlan Dalgleish, as well as Williamstown’s Leigh Masters, are also capable of breaking the game open through the middle quickly, however, and cannot be afforded space to work. South Australia has chosen a squad that is a mixture of grunt around the ball and quicker movers to space, so this will throw the impetus back onto the experienced Collins to tailor a game plan that can both close this down and kick a winning score.

This looms as a great contest and with no local AFL in Adelaide that day, with good weather forecasted, all signs point to a good crowd cheering on a stirring contest. It is always a little hard to line up the Victorian form, and on home turf, particularly with a good overall recent record against Victoria, South Australia should maintain state pride for another season.

general sportQueensland aims to end Sydney hoodooN

ine State of Origin series wins in the last decade is impressive.

But there is one stat that clearly irks the all conquering Queensland ahead of the June 1 series opener against NSW - its record in Sydney.

And it seems new Maroons coach Kevin Walters has made it his first order of business after taking over the reins from the legendary Mal Meninga.

Time and again Walters brought up Queensland’s 2-4 win-loss Origin record over the past five years in Sydney unprompted after unveiling his first 17 for the series opener at ANZ Stadium.

And with two games in Sydney this year - the first time since 2013 - Walters admitted it was a hoodoo they must finally overcome.

“Since they started a three game series in 1983 it’s been difficult (to win in Sydney),” Walters said.

“But with this team we are going to give it a real good shake.

“We have put all of our energy leading into that first game.”

During its stunning Origin run since 2006, Queensland is a 7-6 win-loss record in Sydney.

However, it has been reduced to a worrying 2-4 tally since 2011.

Overall the Blues have a dominant 24-1-17

win-draw-loss Origin record in the NSW capital.

“It’s a real challenge for our guys,” Walters said.

“We need to square the ledger a bit there if we can - that’s what we will try to do.”

Queensland coach Cameron Smith said they spent time on the first day of their team camp on Tuesday discussing the one thing they haven’t quite got right during their 10-year dominance.

“We know they (NSW) are a great side and they’re particularly hard to beat in Sydney,” Smith said.

“We haven’t got such a great record there, that is for everyone to see, but we are out to

change that this year.

“But it’s an area we haven’t been so good at - winning in Sydney.”

Smith said their Sydney record compounded the importance of drawing first blood in game one at ANZ Stadium next Wednesday night.

“It is a tough place to play, it is a very hostile crowd to play in front of and conditions are quite different than Brisbane,” Smith said.

“We’ve spoken about it briefly (in team camp) - we all know game one is pretty important to base your series around.”

Ange rests Jedinak at Socceroos trainingS

occeroos captain Mile Jedinak sat out training on Tuesday but is still expected to line up against England on Friday night.

Coach Ange Postecoglou opted to give Crystal Palace skipper Jedinak an extra day to recover from Saturday’s bruising FA Cup final, rather than risk him in the squad’s first session since arriving.

The remaining 22 players were put through a light hour-long run at Sunderland’s Academy Of Light, and will step up their preparations on Wednesday with a higher intensity session.

On Friday Jedinak will likely be up against three opponents he faced in the FA Cup final, with Manchester United trio Chris Smalling, Wayne Rooney and Marcus Rashford all expected to play.

Socceroos midfielder Massimo Luongo says he doesn’t expect United’s tumultuous week - with the sacking of manager Louis van Gaal - to affect the three players.

“Nah I don’t think so ... when our manager goes or comes in, it’s out of our control,” he said.

so I’m sure they’ll be thinking the same thing.

“They’re good enough players to cement their spot with their new manager anyway. They won’t be too bothered.”

Luongo is hoping for game time against England, having pulled out of next month’s two-match series in Australia against Greece with his partner due to give birth.

“I didn’t fancy a trip to Australia knowing she was going into labour, I’d be stressing,” Luongo said.

Close neighbouring clubs Rostrevor OC and Payneham Norwood Union are gearing for a season-defining contest on Saturday.

Both sides are in the mix for the double chance and the victor here will be rewarded with a one-game buffer on the other which could prove vital in the finish.

ROCs will be the travelling group this week after being given a solid hit-out from Unley Mercedes Jet which was good preparation for this week’s clash at Payneham Oval. Chris Pahl, Brendan Littler and Anthony Medhurst must continue their run of form.

The Falcons took it up to ladder leader Tea Tree Gully last week but a stirring sprint home in the last quarter wasn’t enough, falling 10 points short.

Neighbours at war

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Wayward kicking was a factor but Payneham Norwood Union had given its opposition too much latitude in the third quarter to set up a margin that proved too great to reel in.

Josh Hand, Cameron Sandercock and Clint Dow from the Gullies should consolidate their side’s position on top of the ladder when they face Adelaide University away this week.

Salisbury North restricted the Blacks’ fluency last week with pressure, claiming a valuable 48-point victory.

The Hawks will be keen for another two premiership points when they are at Goodwood this week, after having four deducted last week for club sanctions from a lower grade transgression.

DIVISION 1 ROUND 7Goodwood Saints v Salisbury North Goodwood Oval

Henley v Prince Alfred OC Henley Memorial

Unley Mercedes Jets v Port District Kingswood Oval

Payneham NU v Rostrevor OC Payneham Oval

Adelaide University v Tea Tree Gully University Oval

It will definitely ignite a spark under the likes of Anthony Morgante, Ben Wiles and Ty Potticary again this week.

Goodwood Saints leapt out of the blocks earlier against Prince Alfred OC last week but could not hold out their opponents who responded strongly and while it remained tight for most of the second half, the Reds prevailed.

Second-placed Prince Alfred OC won’t want to take Saturday’s encounter against Henley for granted but it should be able to keep the pressure on Tea Tree Gully by adding another win to its tally.

Cameron Graetz, Brock Castree and Adam Perryman will look to be aware from the outset.

The Sharks are lacking any ferocity at present and if they don’t regain some spirit soon, it looks like an early call on demotion coming.

Due to Salisbury North’s loss of points, Port District jumped into the top five following its success over Henley last week.

It came at the right time as the Magpies face lowly Unley Mercedes Jets which will allow Mathew Weistra, Josh Rosenthal and Jay Williams to bolster their side’s finals hopes further.

PHOS Camden recorded a vital win last week to join the logjam for finals spots.

The Phantoms startled Gaza which would have looked to create a gap between itself and the emerging challengers.

It was the visitors who showed grit to upset the Eagles on home soil by 38 points.

Sam Williams, Mark Ruwoldt and Adam Smyth must arouse their teammates for consistency now, with Old Ignatians to make its way to Camden Oval on Saturday.

Such a scalp would really show that PHOS Camden is more than a pretender.

Old Iggies, second on the ladder, dented the hopes of one prospective contender in Scotch OC last week by a soul-destroying 72 points.

Dylan McNeil, Matt Christopherson and Josh Leane highlighted the spread of talent was

kilburn and Athelstone approach this game at Blair Athol Reserve with contrasting form lines.

Kilburn, with one win for the season, was no match for Seaton Ramblers last week when it lost by 123 points. James O’Loughlin, Ryan McCafferty and Kyle Parks were among the best for the Chics, while Michael Howson kicked five goals. Athelstone is flying in second place with six wins, last week beating Mitcham by 25 points after setting up its win with a 26-point lead at quarter time. Stephan Monda, Justin Sheedy (three goals) and Ben Lomman were among the best for the Raggies. Hard to see anything but a Raggies’ win by 38-52 points.

Gepps Cross and Walkerville have just the one win on the board. The Rams found scoring tough against Flinders Park last week, crashing to an 84-point loss. Mark Boothey, Jack Gibbs and Ryan Collins were among Gepps’ better

players. Walkerville also copped a big loss to Gepps Cross by 122 points. Ty Allen, Tom Sinclair and Lincoln Blewit were among the best for the Cats. At home the Rams can win by 10-22 points.

Golden Grove hosts Seaton Ramblers in what could be a key battle in the race to the top five. The Kookaburras stunned Kilburn by 122 points last week with Todd Sheppard, Oliver Graham and Matthew Forester among the key movers. Brayden Shaw kicked seven goals. Seaton Ramblers also enjoyed a big win, beating Kilburn by 123 points at home last week. Brett Harland (seven goals), Luke Walsh and Callan Annett led the way for the Rams. Tough to assess but the Rams can win by 14-28 points.

Third meets top when Pembroke Old Scholars hosts unbeaten Flinders Park. The Kings accounted for Plympton last week by 38 points with Eljay Connors, Charles Canny and James

Allan solid players. Flinders Park proved too strong for Gepps Cross by 84 points. Jacob Fuller was the star of the day with 12 goals, while Joel Baldwin and Matthew Morrell also played well. The Reds are hot and can win again by 12-26 points.

Mitcham and Plympton meet at Mitcham in a fourth versus seventh contest. The Hawks battled, down to Athelstone by 25 points last week. Ben Geytenbeek (seven goals) starred with Alex Rowe handy for the Hawks. Plympton fell to Pembroke OS by 38 points, with Brodie McLeod, Cynan Smith and Adrian Tan solid. The home side by 28-40 points.

right across the park for Old Ignatians.

Gaza should be able to lift against neighbour Broadview on Saturday.

The Tigers made St Peters OC respond several occasions last week but could not hold their opponents.

SPOC regained its spot in the top five following its come-from-behind 12-point victory.

A four-quarter effort from Tom Butler, Bradley Hartman and James Duncan will be needed to stick with Modbury, particularly after the top side succumbed against Sacred Heart OC last week.

The Hawks will be out to counter their first loss of 2016 by swooping on St Peters OC this week.

SHOC’s Nick Forester, Mitchell Bosley and Mitchell Parr would have taken much belief from this upset result and, in lieu of a lapse

on Saturday, should make it four wins in a row against SMOSH West Lakes.

The Lions were decimated by Portland last week which could prove hard to come back from.

Portland heads to Scotch College on Saturday needing to win to stay in touch with the top five.

The Thunder didn’t let SMOSH West Lakes into their encounter at any stage last week and it will be up to Brett Prior, Robert Wilson and Dale Laslett to ignite similar pressure this week.

Eastern Park and Colonel Light Gardens have plenty on the line in the battle for the top five. The Demons, third, showed

plenty of spirit to edge out Edwardstown away by 21 points with Ian Williamson, Peter Diedrichsen and Alex Winter leading the charge. Colonel Light Gardens just held out a gallant Kenilworth by a point at home after leading by 25 points at three quarter time. The Lions, in sixth place, were best served by Lee Davis, Josh Bennett and Corey Knight. Eastern Park at home is a very tough assignment and looks the goods by 22-36 points.

Hope Valley and Edwardstown is another intriguing match to assess. The Demons have lost a couple of close games lately, last week going down to Salisbury by six points. Daniel Williamson, Luke Steele and Eddy O’Connor were among the team’s better players. Edwardstown fell to Eastern Park at home by 21 points after trailing by six points

Elizabeth could get its season on an upwards drive after achieving its first win of the season.

The Eagles celebrated a confidence-boosting triumph that coach David Rogers will be hoping lifts his side to more success.

Their victory though left Pulteney as now the only side without a win in Division 5.

Elizabeth’s next opponent Smithfield hasn’t been travelling at its best yet either and buoyant from last week’s outcome could ping a surprise against its closest neighbour on Saturday.

Blake Thom, Adam Hann and Brayden Abbott were instrumental in getting their side’s first win up and are the keys to the Eagles gaining more throughout the season.

The Panthers gave Blackfriars OS something to think about last week but as has been their way, they were unable to show the polish needed to win.

The Navy Blues will be back home this week wondering if they will ever manage that elusive victory.

Rosewater goes to Morgan Oval on Saturday which will be another difficult challenge for Pulteney, especially after the Bulldogs fought hard to defeat Lockleys by just eight points to put themselves right into the double chance equation.

The strength of Rosewater came to the fore in Adam Pepe, Dylan Lockwood and Jonathan Mahney leading their troops last week and appears too strong here as well.

The Demons face another test this week with top side Hectorville visiting Lockleys Oval.

With cleaner ball movement and more pressure around the contest, they could cause their own upset.

Of course, Daniel Francis, Simon Thwaites and Daniel Sauerwald from the Hounds will have other ideas after proving their class in accounting for Greenacres in a comfortable 61-point win.

The Dragons must fire back up against Glenunga this week.

at the last change. Better players for Towns were Kane Mulvaney, Aaron Parson sand Jack Horgan. Few Towns players would have played at the Hope Valley ground but they should just have the know how to win by 14-28 points.

Pooraka and Salisbury meet at Lindblom Park in an eighth versus second contest. The Bulls fell away against North Haven in the second half to lose by 55 points with Nathan Romeo, Tyson Barnes and Joshua Slater among the side’s better players. Salisbury is enjoying a good start to the season, last week holding on to beat Hope Valley by six points. Ryan Paget, Justin McPherson and Michael Keenihan played well for the Magpies. Hard to see the Bulls getting up, even at home. Salisbury 28-32 points.

The Rams are slowly making their rise up the ladder following their second stirring triumph of the season, stunning CBCOC by 28 points and positioning themselves for a finals assault.

Guy Ward, Sam Venning and Lourens Victor of Glenunga will need to reproduce last week’s efforts to record consecutive wins for the first time this year.

CBCOC must rise as well to face second-placed Blackfriars OS on Saturday.

had a bye last week, while North Haven was too solid for Pooraka, home by 55 points. Tom Haythorpe, Aaron Hinsley and Ryan Adams were solid for the Magpies, while Jonathan Mahney kicked four goals. A top game on the cards with the Dragons tipped by 16-28 points.

Kenilworth, which has the bye, went within one point of winning its first game of the season. It lost to Colonel Light Gardens with Shawn Clarke its best.

Brahma Lodge hosts Adelaide Lutheran in an important game for both sides’ aims to make the five.

The Tigers, fourth, lost to Woodville South last week under lights by 30 points with Tim Aloisi starring with seven goals. Adelaide Lutheran, sixth, beat Mitchell Park by 46 points last week with Shane Hickey (three goals) solid. The Tigers can pounce by 14-28 points.

Fitzroy and Houghton Districts meet at Renown Park. The Lions lost to Mawson Lakes by 37 points last week with Jake Brophy their best. Houghton Districts has enjoyed good moments, last week matching Ingle Farm before falling by 27 points. Jai McMurtrie led the way for the Raiders. Houghton can get up by 16-30 points.

Mitchell Park faces a tough job to keep West Croydon in check at Mitchell Park on Saturday. The Lions, with one win on the board, lost to Adelaide Lutheran by 46 points with Sam Labbozzetta their best player. Top side West Croydon surprised in drawing with Trinity Old Scholars last week at home. The Hawks were best served by Jacob Sumner. Hard to see anything but a Hawks victory by 38-52 points.

Adelaide University maintained its place of top university side in the Channel Nine Adelaide Football League, jumping into

the top four in the process.

The Blacks were merciless in dismantling Flinders University last week, by 105 points.

Braden Robinson, Thomas Vickery and Charles Mintz will be out to further enhance their side’s percentage (which is already second highest in Division 7) when Adelaide University meets North Pines on Saturday.

The Redbacks have struggled this season but that wasn’t the case last week when they beat Payneham Norwood Union by 127-points.

If Ricky O’Loughlin, Brenton Wilson and Scott Lawrie show the same intensity against the Blacks this week this clash might be closer than first thought.

Flinders University will have to forget about last week’s performance to bounce back against Central United at home.

The Bulldogs showed vigour in their encounter

Ingle Farm and Woodville South, in third and second place on the ladder respectively and separated by percentage, should be a beauty at Rowe Park. The Bulldogs held out Houghton Districts by 27 points with Nathan Buck (three goals) among the best. Woodville South beat Brahma Lodge under lights at home by 30 points last Friday week ago. Brett Hains led the way. At home it’s the Bulldogs by 12-26 points.

Trinity Old Scholars and Mawson Lakes meet at Trinity College. The Lions pulled off a stunning draw against West Croydon with Travis Eves best. Mawson Lakes was too strong for Fitzroy last week, winning by 37 points. Chris Haydon led the best players for the Saints. The Lions can win by 16-32 points.

against Prince Alfred OC last week to go down by the barest of margins.

This week could be one of those opportunities against the Crabs.

On Saturday, Prince Alfred OC hosts Unley Mercedes Jets in a game crucial to both side’s double chance prospects.

William Daniel, Henry Basedow and Ben Siebels will be keen to keep the Jets down after their humbling loss to ladder leader Salisbury West.

The Tigers were as ruthless as ever, mauling the second-placed outfit at the time by 145 points.

Maher’s hope firmingT

he likelihood of a firm track has not deterred trainer Ciaron Maher from

proceeding with plans to chase the Doomben 10,000-Stradbroke Handicap double with his star performer Azkadellia.

The Caulfield trainer said a look at the likely make-up of Saturday’s field had convinced him to enter the Group One Sprint this week, with only a field of 10 lining up.

“The way she is doing it will be pretty nice timing to have her right for the Stradbroke,” Maher said.

“I think a run two weeks out will only bring her on.”

After finishing third behind Winx and Happy Clapper in the Doncaster at Royal Randwick last month, Azkadellia went on to win the Queen Of The Turf Stakes on soft ground a week later.

“The tracks (in Brisbane) don’t get as firm as they get down home,” Maher said.

“They’re older, more consolidated tracks and they’ve had a bit of racing on them and I think it’s a different type of firm.

“She’s galloped on it (Doomben) Tuesday week ago and let down quite nicely.”

Sydney trainer Peter Snowden has high hopes for his two Doomben 10,000 runners in Dothraki and Charlie Boy.

After a Group One Galaxy third in March, Dothraki ran fifth to Chautauqua in the Group One TJ Smith Stakes.

He was then beaten by the barest of margins crossing second to Malaguerra in the Group One BTC Cup at Doomben two weeks ago.

“Dothraki won’t have to improve much, he was beaten half an inch in the BTC Cup,” Snowden said.

“His run was good last start, he is in great form and is thriving in Brisbane.

“The 1350m would probably be as far as he wants to go.”

Stablemate Charlie Boy was less promising in the BTC Cup, finishing second last at his fourth Doomben assignment but he had previously won the Group Three BRC Sprint at the track last winter before a brave second to Boban in last year’s Doomben 10,000.

“Charlie Boy will run a much better race in the 10,000,” Snowden said.

“The tempo of the BTC Cup was against him, it took him out of his comfort zone, but he will appreciate getting out to 1350m.

“His work has been very good since his last start and he is ready to run well.”

Snowden believes either of his pair could bring up a third win in Brisbane’s weight-for-age sprint.

When head trainer for Godolphin, he prepared two Doomben 10,000 winners with Beaded (2011) and Epaulette (2013).

Azkadellia is the $2.80 favourite for Saturday over Fell Swoop at $5 with Delectation, Dothraki and Music Magnate all at $5.50.
