T he story has been lingering among the sporting pages for the past three years

with everyone wondering why it couldn’t have been dealt with sooner.

And while we don’t want to stretch the Essedon drugs supplement saga any longer, there is cause for concern arising from the final penalties that were handed down, particularly for the other 15 clubs in the competition, that’s needs questioning.

Okay, the players have been strongly held to account for their actions in the Bombers’ drugs saga, with current players unable to partake in the 2016 AFL season. They include those who have moved onto other clubs (albeit many will still have their lucrative contracts for the year paid out) while retired and delisted players are unable to play even in lower country and amateur competitions or have any involvement with the playing side of the game, including in a coaching capacity.

The most ridiculous case of this point is where Dustin Fletcher cannot watch his sons play as he

is not allowed to be near an oval when a game is being played – that is taking it all too far.

The players have certainly been heavily punished for their so-called acceptance of taking the unknown supplements.

However, where is the football club’s penalty for dragging its players through this now-sordid program?

No doubt it will have to put up with a less-than-ideal season performance-wise with a hotch-potch squad of players still trying to show their worth in the game.

The fans will also suffer with results far from favourable resulting in less success and no real chance of seeing finals action this season.

Maybe the club will face duress here as fans will not attend Essendon games while merchandise sales can also be expected to be down, affecting the club’s financial coffers.

Although the fans could be willing to accept the season as a write-off as they will see their side actually rewarded with a much improved draft ranking at season’s end.

Who do the bans hurt more?

There must be nothing better than winning your first race at home.

Holden driver Nick Percat got the chance to achieve just that with his maiden individual V8 Supercar win in last Sunday’s rain-soaked race at the Clipsal 500 (he had previously won the Bathurst 1000 as a co-driver with Garth Tander in 2011).

It was even the first ever South Australian victory in the history of the race and also a first win for the Lucas Dumbrell Racing Team.

Fuel may have had a say in the final placings of the shortened race, but under those conditions, the Flagstaff Hill boy had still earned the right to celebrate a famous hometown success.

It’s never a dull day when Bernard Tomic or Nick Kygrios are playing or even not playing in some cases.

However, Tomic’s outburst during his Davis Cup match against big American John Isner cannot be tolerated, especially when representing your country.

The pair has a knack of throwing in the towel when things are not going their way and then try to place blame on others.

Well, it’s time they both simply woke up to themselves and either perform to the talents they have been gifted or move on – then again, maybe they should be made to play doubles together in Australia’s next Davis Cup tie.

So are the Bombers really being penalised when they will see the first, second or third best current youngster come to their club next year because they will finish bottom of the ladder or near enough to it in 2016?

Isn’t this a benefit to the club, which probably wouldn’t have been challenging for the title this season anyway?

No doubt it is easier to write the year off under such circumstances, with advanced improvement more likely in the future.

This must be a concern for the other clubs which probably, rightfully, haven’t pushed the agenda too far seeing the plight of the current players. But where do the actions of the club itself come under scrutiny?

The individual players will have this hanging over their heads for years while the club seems to be getting away scot free.

Possibly the other clubs will arc up when Essendon begins to succeed from its rewarded draft pick(s) in the near future. But all will be too late.

Bomber’s fans will have forgotten about their present hardship and maybe they will be thankful it happened.

The other clubs though, definitely won’t be but perhaps we’ll all have forgotten about it by then.

It hasn’t been the ideal preparation leading into a new season for Port Adelaide.

The loss of former Essendon players Angus Monfries’ and Paddy Ryder’s services for the year resticts the club’s depth.

The request for suitable top-up players was then not looked upon favourably and coach Ken Hinkley has been unable to assess big recruit Charlie Dixon’s value to the club as yet.

That will no doubt change this week when the key forward takes his place in the Power line-up for its last NAB Challenge contest against Richmond at Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.

Dixon’s worth became even greater with the suspension of fellow big man Ryder and he will need to play a crucial role in attack if Port Adelaide is to return to the finals in 2016.

Last year the players failed to meet the expectations on them. They cannot enter this season with similar frailties or much of the same will be realised.

With no Ryder, pressure will build on ruckman Matthew Lobbe who fell back last season from his dominant 2014 output at a bit of a loss to what his role was with the introduction of another big man.

Well, he will once again take the number one ruck mantle, with some assistance coming from Justin Westhoff and the possible rise of youngster Dougal Howard, which should see Lobbe regaining focus this year.

Fans did not see much of the pace duo Jared Polec and Matthew White during 2015 while tough young onballer Ollie Wines’ season came to an abrupt end in round 18 when he required shoulder surgery.

It is hoped all three key players to the side’s premiership chances will bounce back this year to strengthen the Power’s formidable midfield of captain Travis Boak, new vice-captain Hamish Hartlett, Robbie Gray and Brad Ebert.

Melbourne recruit Jimmy Toumpas will also be pushing to break into that engine room mix.

Up forward, Hinkley will be eager to see the new Jay Schulz and Dixon combination work better than the Schulz and Ryder one did last year while it is anticipated that star Chad Wingard will be spending more time around the pair as well in 2016 to add his attacking prowess.

Defender Jack Hombsch stepped his game up to a new level last year, but Hinkley will be hoping that there is still more to come.

Powering up for 2016

A few others like Tom Jonas and Cam O’Shea will need to re-find their best, after an indifferent season in 2015, for Port Adelaide to advance back up the ladder.

Plenty will rest on Alipate Carlile, Jackson Trengove and Jasper Pittard to marshal the backline while it’s time for Tom Clurey to become a regular contributor.

Port Adelaide’s season will only progress if the likes of the second and third-tier groups which include Sam Gray, Karl Amon, Nathan Krakouer, Jake Neade, Jarman Impey and Brendon Ah Chee come on this year.

At the same time, young guns Jesse Palmer, Howard and Sam Colquhoun can begin to make their presence felt around the club.

Draftees Riley Bonner and Aidyn Johnson have the ability to leap the lot of them.

to be boiling in the latter part of the season.

Injuries certainly curtailed his prospects last year. But the same expectations are still there for success to return to Alberton and while his tenure is assured beyond this season, it doesn’t take much for the hounds to come barking.

The Power, though, should be right in the mix for a handy position within the top eight.

Whether it is capable this year to show the same signs of premiership potential as it did in 2014 is another thing in this tough AFL competition.

All going well, and that’s what it will need to achieve it, fourth spot is available to it but more realistically it should be around the fifth-seventh range and ready to trouble those above it come finals time.

est Coast skipper Shannon Hurn says last year’s fairytale run to the grand final will count for little as the club

attempts to go one step further in 2016.

The Eagles were the Cinderella story of 2015, rising from ninth the previous season to reach the grand final.

A 46-point thrashing from Hawthorn in the decider brought West Coast crashing back to earth, but the Eagles have been installed as one of the premiership favourites for this season.

There was plenty of optimism at West Coast’s season launch on Tuesday, and Hurn admits it will be a challenge to manage the growing hype surrounding the club.

And he said it’s important for the player group to realise that last year’s heroics wouldn’t guarantee the Eagles anything this season.

“We certainly do start even,” Hurn said.

“I think one of the things that you get from

Eagles staying grounded in hunt for flagperformances is you get some confidence.

“It’s not necessarily you still continue on your form, but you understand certain ways we play and prepare puts you in the best chance of winning.

“I think that’s what we managed to do last year, so we understand if we can do that ... you’ve got the percentages and odds in your favour.”

Hurn says he feels for Mitch Brown after the defender was ruled out for at least eight weeks because of a serious finger injury.

Brown was forced to undergo surgery after rupturing a tendon in the middle finger of his left hand during last week’s pre-season win over Gold Coast.

The setback will sideline Brown until at least round six.

It’s a cruel blow for Brown, who was playing just his second match since undergoing a knee reconstruction a year ago.

The 27 year-old also missed the 2008 season after undergoing a knee reconstruction.

The news was much better for prized recruit Lewis Jetta, who tweaked his calf against the Suns.

Jetta was back jogging on Monday, and the club is optimistic the former Swan will be fit to tackle Brisbane in the season opener on 27 March.

Midfielder Luke Shuey (knee) is set to return in Sunday’s pre-season match against Essendon, while Sharrod Wellingham and Mark Hutchings are also in line for some minutes after overcoming minor injuries.

New recruit Jack Redden (adductor) is more likely to play for WAFL side East Perth after missing most of the summer.

Midfielder Chris Masten is progressing well from an ankle injury, but he won’t be available until round four.

Leppa: No excuses for Brisbane LionsT

he pressure is still very much on Justin Leppitsch despite the Brisbane Lions coach’s new one-year contract extension.

Leppitsch is now tied to the Lions until the end of the 2017 AFL season – but just because his future is assured, doesn’t mean the blowtorch turns away.

“There’s always pressure, no matter what happens,” Leppitsch told reporters on Tuesday.

“Someone commented the other day about our difficult start and how that’s going to be difficult, and then I spoke to some teams who have a softer start and they said ‘jeez, but if we don’t win them, we’re going to be under pressure.

“The pressure’s always there. That’s just the game we’re playing at the highest level. You’ve got to rise above it.”

Leppitsch said he felt he had the full backing of the AFL club now after extending his contract.

He also believes the side is poised for big things over the next few seasons.

“For me it’s only a small part of a long journey. In a lot of ways it’s terrific but there’s nothing big to celebrate yet,” he said.

After two lean years in which his position was under constant speculation, this is a new kind of pressure for Leppitsch – the expectation that his immensely-talented squad fulfils its potential under his guidance.

Brisbane has made a whopping 34 list changes over the past three summers and there is an overwhelming sense at the club that the building blocks for their next premiership are now in place, with experience the only thing missing.

Leppitsch conceded there were “no excuses” for the Lions, having met their recruiting needs and made some key off-field signings, including the highly-rated husband-and-wife welfare team of Craig and Melissa Lambert.

“It’s always a combination of factors why a club slowly gets better. That’s why the club’s confident now, with the stability and direction we’re going,” he said.

“The beauty is we’re only going to go up from here.

“We’ve got the talent we can persist with, and the coaches, the club and the game plan and I’m really confident on that.”

Some of the younger AFL draftees and trades, such as Troy Menzel and Dean Gore may see SANFL action early and this could be a catalyst to a bright start to the season. Considerable turnover at Brighton Road, although a number of the departures were not regular senior players in 2015. Many of the arrivals bring recent SANFL experience, with Sawford’s 40 possessions against Glenelg in round 17 last year catching the Tiger eye sufficiently to make him a recruiting target. Kirkby’s presence in attack will be invaluable in supporting Clint Alleway, while Reinbrecht will add further grunt to the inside midfield division.

Many of the ins will be handy, but it remains to be seen just how much they can combine with the rest of the list to add further steel to a spine that looked a little thin at times in 2015. The biggest recruit for the Roosters sits in the coach’s box, with former Port Adelaide Power assistant Josh Carr taking the reins at Prospect. His no-nonsense approach has already been stamped, with a number of players shown the door, but only limited numbers coming in the opposite direction. McKenzie will add steel in the middle and McDonough undoubted class, but the biggest query sits over their ability to kick winning scores. A number of talls leaving also makes them very vulnerable in the key posts and any lengthy injury run similar to 2015 will really test their depth considerably. Carr will certainly improve them off-field, but it looks a forlorn task to have them climbing the ladder significantly.2016 PREDICTION: tenth

The Bulldogs were nearly the fairytale story last season, with a strong finish to the season being rewarded with a preliminary final berth after ending the finals chances of Norwood and Port. Coach Roy Laird continued to write one of the more formidable coaching resumes of the modern era and has proven again that he can adapt and meet the challenges of re-inventing the game plan and the psyche of the list. The loss of Thomas will be massive, both in terms of leadership and pure class, but his absence now hands the opportunity to younger players to step up and take the mantle. Mabon’s and Retzlaff’s departures rob them of some height around the ground, but Darcy Fort should step neatly into Mabon’s role. Suspect they will just miss finals action this year, but that is more a reflection of the strength of a couple of other lists rather than a knock on the Bulldogs.2016 PREDICTION: SIxth

ustralia will be looking to sit the World T20 Cup to its World One-Day trophy won last year when competition begins

in India on Friday.

The side’s T20 form hasn’t been that much to write home about of late, losing all three matches to India in the recent series in Australia and then the first of its clashes against South Africa in preparation for the World Cup.

However, they should have regained some belief with a resounding victory in game two against the Proteas, chasing 205 in Johannesburg.

Victory was steered magnificently by a record stand of 161 runs by David Warner and Glenn Maxwell, which should given the two leading top order batsmen a much-needed boost of confidence before heading to India.

It was a timely run chase by the Australians who face the third and deciding match against South Africa on Thursday morning (Australian time).


It was imperative they find some belief in their game to be able to back up captain Steve Smith’s thoughts that the side could give the World T20 Cup a real shake.

“It’s one that’s eluded us,” Smith said on departing for South Africa.

“It’s going to be a tough tour in India, in conditions that are foreign to us.

“But I think we’ve got the squad to give it a real shake.

“From my point of view there’s (the World T20) and the away Ashes that needs to be ticked off.”

The Aussies returned to their number one status in the Test format with their series win in New Zealand and victory in the World T20 format would see them on top of the tree in every facet of the game.

It may still take a few games to find their best line-up for the conditions which will be vastly different to what they usually play on in Australia and faced in South Africa.

Spin could dominate the tournament in the subcontinent which must see Ashton Agar, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa come to the fore.

On the batting side, Warner batted down the order at number four, instead of opening, in Australia’s latest victory over South Africa.

Usman Khawaja, Aaron Finch and Shane Watson are vying for opening duties.

Australia must get through Group Two which comprises of India, New Zealand, Pakistan and the top side from Group A Knockout series where Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands and Oman will compete.

Their first match though will be Friday week against the Kiwis in Dharamsala.

Final still in Redbacks’ reach

They did it the hard way but the South Australian Redbacks is still alive with a home game next week to determine its

finals’ plight.

The Redbacks were moving nicely in their run chase of 274 against Western Australia at the WACA until captain Travis Head who had led his side diligently to a winnable position fell for 134 off 141 balls leaving the score at 7 for 250 with only 24 runs needed.

However, when both Chadd Sayers and Daniel Worrall fell with seven runs still needed, Nick Benton, who wasn’t expected to bat due to suffering a dislocated shoulder on day one of the match, had to take his place in the middle and then managed to score the winning runs.

Joe Mennie (49 not out) combined well with Head to show resilience at the crease

for South Australia, putting on valuable partnership of 76 runs.

It’s the second time SA had defeated the Warriors by one-wicket this summer and keeps the Redbacks’ Shield finals hopes alive as they leapfrog WA into fourth place, five points adrift of Queensland in second.

It could be the type of victory that the South Australians needed with the players now able to take that confidence into their vital last match against Tasmania, starting next Tuesday at Glenelg Oval. To have any chance of making the final, the Redbacks must beat the bottom-placed Tigers and hope that other results go their way in the process.

In the final round of matches, Victoria needs to beat New South Wales in Alice Springs and Western Australia must defeat Queensland at the Gabba.

Overall though, after putting themselves into a positive position second on the Shield ladder before the Big Bash break, it has been disappointing that the Redbacks have not been able to capitalise upon their return to the longer format.

It is the second year in a row where they have been a chance to push for a long awaited finals appearance and while they are not out just yet, they will have to question their mental resolve at season’s end.

However, let’s hope things can still go their way – plenty has to go right but they are in the position they have placed themselves in.

The State has been devoid of cricket success for so long that fans must be wondering if it is ever going to happen again.

Fans were also left broken hearted by another preliminary finals loss in the Big Bash T20 series recently as well.

he Masters can’t come soon enough for Adam Scott after he claimed a second successive victory, taking out the World

Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship in Miami.

The 2013 Masters champion rallied from six shots back during a wild final round to triumph by one shot from Bubba Watson as the world’s best slugged it out on the Blue Monster course at Trump National Doral on Sunday.

It capped a red-hot three weeks during which Scott also finished second in the Northern Trust Open in LA then claimed victory in the Honda Classic a week ago.

The 35 year-old Australian’s only concern now is holding his form as he prepares his bid for a second Masters title at Augusta National from 7-10 April. “I’d love to just bottle up where my game’s been at the last couple weeks and move forward a month,” Scott said.

“That’s going to be the hard thing for me to do is manage my expectations and also manage my game to keep it right here.

“I can’t just keep pushing. I have to pace myself so I don’t over-work it.

“It’s finding that balance ...but obviously the confidence is going to be high. I just want to do everything to keep it there.”

Former world number one Scott’s win on Sunday was his 13th on the US tour and his second WGC title and it’s set to lift him from nine to six in the rankings.

The highest-paid sportswoman in the world faces a ban of up to four years and has already had her multi-million-dollar sponsorship with Nike suspended after admitting to testing positive to a substance she’s been taking for a decade for health issues.

The five-time grand slam champion and former world number one is hoping for leniency but will be provisionally suspended from 12 March, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said.

Sharapova is the seventh athlete in a month to test positive for meldonium, a drug used to treat diabetes and low magnesium and only banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as of 1 January.

“I made a huge mistake. I let my fans down and I let the sport down,” the 28-year-old Russian told a news conference in Los Angeles.

“I take full responsibility for it.

“I know that with this I face consequences and I don’t want to end my career this way. I really hope that I will be given another chance to play this game.”

The ITF’s anti-doping program calls for a four-year suspension for a positive test, but that ban can be reduced in various circumstances, such as for first-time offences or if the player shows no significant fault or negligence. If a player bears no fault or negligence, there is no suspension.

Sharapova said her family doctor had been giving her mildronate, which is also called meldonium, for 10 years after she frequently became sick, had irregular EKG results, a magnesium deficiency and a family history of diabetes.

“It is very important for you to understand that for 10 years this medicine was not on WADA’s banned list and I had been legally taking the medicine,” she said.

“But on January the first, the rules have changed and meldonium became a prohibited substance.”

Over the past month, Russian cyclist Eduard Vorganov, Russian figure skater Ekaterina Bobrova, Ethiopia-born athletes Endeshaw Negesse and Abeba Aregawi and Ukraine biathletes Olga Abramova and Artem Tyshchenko have all tested positive for meldonium.

Sharapova is the most prominent tennis player to test positive for a banned substance in recent years.

Croatia’s Marin Cilic was banned for nine months in 2013 after testing positive for a prohibited stimulant, though the suspension was cut to four months on appeal.

Swiss former world number one Martina Hingis retired after receiving a two-year suspension for a positive cocaine test in 2007.

Adelaide United coach Guillermo Amor is trying to maintain level heads among his players after his side stormed to the top of the A-League last week after

a clinical 4-0 thrashing of lowly Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand.

It is time now for the team not to get overawed by its recent run of 14 consecutive A-League matches without a loss – a new club record which can be continued to be built on.

Amor is not getting carried away as his side was still only one point clear of Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar.

“We must enjoy this (moment) and enjoy the situation. Then we work more,” he said.

“We go step by step. We go (forward) with calm and humility. We will enjoy the moment. The best moment in soccer is when you win. The moment is special.

“We must play the next game without thinking whether it’s 12 or 13 or 14 (though). We want to win the game, but not for this (record).

“It’s because our situation is better if we win. We are not thinking if we win the next game, it will be 15. We win for the three points. That is the most important thing.”

It has been a remarkable achievement though, considering the Reds were bottom of the ladder for five weeks at the start of the season, failing to win any of their first eight matches.

However, winning their first ever A-League title isn’t even being discussed.

That would be getting too far ahead of themselves, according to Amor despite admitting to having a quick thought of silverware.

He warned though that his team couldn’t indulge itself with such thoughts for too long.

Having a fit Marcelo Carrusca on the park is a big part to Adelaide United’s success and his recent playmaking has been sublime, especially against the Phoenix last week when he was instrumental in setting up the second and third goals.

The addition of former Melbourne City midfielder Stefan Mauk has given the side another attacking option which was missing earlier in the season while the rise of young gun and new cult hero Bruce Kamau cannot go underestimated in the side’s resurgence with the enthusiasm he has brought to the side.

An area that still needs some work is in defence where a few lapses in concentration were lucky not to cause skipper Eugene Galekovic more trouble in goal.

They are certainly working better but need to stay strong and keep their minds attuned to every attacking foray of their opposition to prevent any loose goals being scored.

The Reds face Melbourne City at Cooper Stadium on Friday night, which will be a challenging contest after the long trip to New Zealand.

Their opponents had an impressive 3-0 victory over Sydney FC last week so must be ready to expect much the same from City this week.

Melbourne City needs to continue gaining points to maintain its position in the top six and with the likes of Socceroo trio Aaron Mooy, Ivan Franjic and Alex Wilkinson, captain Patrick Kisnorbo, Anthony Caceres and Bruno Fornaroli who scored a hat-trick last week, it cannot be taken for granted.

Former United defender Osama Malik will face his ex-teammates for the first time too as will Mauk for the Reds.

Adelaide’s players will have to remain focused on their task at hand while a packed stadium of raucous home fans could boost the side to that 15th match in a row without a loss.

Staying on top must be their aim this week and stretch that one point gap between them and the sides below them on the ladder.

t has been Darren Weir’s season taking many of the top races home including the Melbourne Cup, Toorak Handicap, Queen’s Cup, Sandown Guineas, and

Australian Guineas just last week amongst other big prizes.

He also had a day out at the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast in January.

Now the unassuming trainer will be looking to add the Group Two Adelaide Cup (3200m) to his mantelpiece on Monday.

However, it may not be with the horse we all expected.

Early Adelaide Cup favourite and runaway six and a half length winner of the Group Three Lord Reims Stakes at Morphettville last Saturday Signoff is not a certain starter in this State’s feature event.

The victory last week has brought with it some ramifications for Weir with Signoff now passing the Melbourne Cup qualifying clauses, leaving the Victorian country trainer Weir and the import’s connections with some thinking to do.

It is called Super Saturday at Flemington for a reason – two Group Ones, three Group Two, two Group Threes and Two Listed events on the one day.

Only Derby Day in the spring eclipses it for the number of quality Stakes races on together.

While the big two of the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup take much of the attention, the undercard is just as full of talent, especially with a large number testing the waters for a trip to Sydney for next month’s lucrative The Championships.

The babies had their day at Caulfield two weeks ago but the two year-olds will still be out to shine in either the Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) or Breeders Stakes (1200m).

Power Trip, trained by John McArdle, and Stuart Webb’s Kinetic Design are the only two that raced in the Blue Diamond, finishing fourth and seventh respectively behind Extreme Choice and Flying Artie, to contest the Sires

Can Weir’s run continue?

It may be in the best interests of the horse to be spelled without having a tough run in a 3200m race, particularly on a warm day and with the big weight, and be prepared properly for an even bigger day in November.

However, Weir will still be represented in the Adelaide Cup by last Saturday’s Listed Roy Higgins Quality winner Real Love.

The Perth Cup place-getter was specifically transferred to Weir just for this race and if Signoff bypasses the race then Real Love is sure to take over favouritism.

“Each run she has progressed really well and she has come on at home with her training as well,” Weir said.

“I would think that will have her spot on for Adelaide and the two miles won’t be a problem the way she ran through the line today.”

There will be several trying to upstage Weir’s remarkable season with Grant Young’s duo of Tunes and Celtic Prince, Aaron Purcell’s import Swacadelic, Lucques, trained by Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, Tony McEvoy’s Last Wish, Richard Lamings’

Wales and David Hayes and Tom Dabernig’s Purple Smile right in the mix.

Tunes and Celtic Prince chased Signoff home into the placings in the Lord Reims last week, while German stayer Swacadelic has had two promising lead-up runs in Melbourne, actually beating Signoff in the Listed Torney Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley last start.

Launceston Cup winner Up Cups, trained by David Brunton, must be given some hope as well.

South Australian mare Tidy Prophet will be out to create a slice of racing history in Monday’s $400,000 race.

The Will Clarken-trained five-year-old will be trying to become the first horse to complete the Port Lincoln Cup and Adelaide Cup double after recovering well from her West Coast win last Friday.

Signoff remains favourite at this stage at the short quote of $2.30 but Real Love is just as inhibiting at only $2.70.

The value seems to be Swacadelic at $13.00 or even Lucques if he gets out in front and sets the pace at $26.00.

Hayes and Dabernig have had big raps for Seaburge who missed a start in the Diamond while Peter and Paul Snowden’s Detective must be respected.

Tony McEvoy has had a good bunch of two year-olds this season and Jackson will represent the stable here and Blue Diamond winning trainer Mick Price will have Battle order in the race.

In the Breeders, David Hayes and Tom Dabernig’s ZamZam, third in the Blue Diamond will be the top fancy as will McEvoy’s Concealer, despite being somewhat disappointing in the Diamond finishing ninth.

They will face Robbie Griffith’s Selenia who also missed a start in the Blue Diamond but put in an eye-catching run last week to win, Gai Waterhouse will be down in Melbourne with Thyme For Roses and the promising Soviet Secret who has run on well in both starts at Sandown in the Spring and in Sydney last

month for Sam Gordon-Pritchard.

The Group Two Kewney Stakes (1400m) pits some of the top three year-old fillies from the spring such as McEvoy’s Don’t Doubt Mama, John Thompson’s Mossin’ Around, Peter Moody’s Pasadena Girl, Robert Smerdon’s Indarra and Mick Price’s Badawiya.

However Hayes and Dabernig have brought one on this autumn that could have all their measure in Catch A Fire while Hawkes’ Cana has always been around the mark this time in.

The Group Two Blamey Stakes is another that sees the best of the spring come together including the likes of Darren Weir’s Stratum Star, Hayes and Dabernig’s He Or She and Robert Hickmott’s The United State for owner Lloyd Williams.

Then you can also add Trust In A Gust for Weir and Team Hawkes’ Entirely Platinum.

Moody’s Bassett and Brockhoff, trained by Ciaron Maher, should fight out the Listed Racecourse Trophy and watch Hayes’ and Dabernig’s Scared Eye rattle home in the Group Three Schweppervescence Trophy.

No doubting – a super day of racing.


Can anything beat superstar Chautauqua in the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) down the straight of Flemington on Saturday?

After an amazing effort to get up in the Group One Black Caviar Lightning Stakes last start, it is hard to see any of his rivals on Saturday getting the better of him.

However, Chautauqua will have to defy the weighty challenge of carrying a top weight of 58kg into the race which appears the only thing that can bring him undone.

Only three horses in the past 50 years – Hay List (58.5kg, 2012), Black Caviar (58kg, 2011) and Shaftesbury Avenue (58kg, 1991) – have carried 55kg or more to win the Newmarket.

“On weights he can’t win, but anyway we’ll have a go and try it because that’s all we can do,” his trainer John Hawkes said.

“He has got a good horse’s weight, but he is running. It’s as simple as that.

“Only three horses have won with that weight and we know who they are, so that says enough doesn’t it. But that’s the category they’ve put him in but we’ll have a crack and you just never know.

“And as the saying goes, you have to be in it, to win it.”

The $2.6 million TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on 2 April remains the main aim for Chautauqua this autumn once getting past the Newmarket where he will still start a short-priced favourite.

Three year-old Japonisme was only a neck behind Chautauqua at the finish in the Lightning and with just 52.5kg on Saturday must be given his dues.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes winner at this track and distance in the spring should again be in it for a long way.

Craig Williams will ride Japonisme on race day while Waller will also saddle Group One Darley Classic winner down this track and distance in Delectation, with Damien Oliver aboard and Counterattack to be ridden by Glen Boss.

“They’ve all been down the straight before at Group I level and in a good old-fashioned handicap on Saturday I think our three have each got a good chance,” Waller said.

“Counterattack is the lesser known horse but with 50 kilograms he’s going to be a genuine chance. He ran third in the Coolmore in the spring.

Hawkes eye another Classic victory

“Japonisme’s form is terrific, I think he’s something of an under-rated horse.

“Delectation will need the 1200 (metres) at this stage. He’s a genuine 1400 (metre) to a mile horse but I think that makes him very effective up the straight.”

Robbie Griffiths doubts whether The Quarterback is getting enough weight from established Group One stars in the Newmarket but the trainer hopes a return to his favourite track will help his cause.

The Quarterback has 52kg in the sprint event two-time Newmarket-winning jockey Craig Newitt to ride.

“It’s a relatively compressed scale so he probably needs more relief than he’s got, but it is what it is,” Griffiths said.

“I’ve always thought now he’s a bit older the 1200 down the straight at Flemington in a Newmarket with a light weight would always be probably his best chance at a big race in Melbourne.”

Nigel Blackiston is confident the rise to 2000 metres will be perfect for Suavito when the mare chases another Group One victory in this race.

A first-up winner of the C F Orr Stakes over 1400m, Suavito was kept at that distance for her second start this campaign in an attempt to win back-to-back Futurity Stakes.

She did her best work late, running third to Turn Me Loose, and Blackiston is looking forward to Saturday’s weight-for-age feature at Flemington.

“She’s had two tough runs at 1400 metres and I think she was looking for the mile the other day,” Blackiston said.

“I think with the work she’s done this week leading into Saturday, the 2000 metres is perfect for her.

“Obviously Bow Creek is definitely one of the main opponents but there’s others in this race.

“I’ve got a healthy respect for all the competition, but I wouldn’t change her for any of them.”

Co-trainer Tom Dabernig is looking to a return Flemington and a good barrier to bring about a change of fortune for Rising Romance.

The 2014 ATC Australian Oaks winner and Caulfield Cup runner-up will be one of three runners for the Lindsay Park team in the Australian Cup on Saturday.

Sydney Cup aspirant Almoonqith and last year’s Australian Cup runner-up Extra Zero will also fly the stable’s flag.

“She’s got a very good record at Flemington and with those two runs underneath her and the 2000 metres she should be ready to do something.

“She goes on any surface but I reckon if there’s a little bit of sting out of it, she’ll fly.”

Big test for Godolphin filly

Godolphin’s unbeaten filly Ghisoni looks the testing material for most of her

rivals in Saturday’s Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Although she has maintained a perfect record in her first three starts, Ghisoni will need to show all her class stepping up to open company at Group One level.

She has opened as the early top pick with bookmakers but Ciaron Maher’s exciting Azkadellia is not far behind.

James McDonald has been booked to partner the Group One-winning mare, surprisingly over his usual Godolphin mounts but he’d struggle to make the weight of 50kg to be aboard Ghisoni on Saturday.

Singapore-based Corey Brown returns to Sydney this weekend to ride the favourite and if Ghisoni can get up she will be the first filly to win the Coolmore since Typhoon Tracy in 2009.

One of her biggest threats though will be the Gerald Ryan-trained Solicit who will chasing her maiden Group One success.

“She has come through her last start in great order but it’s not going to be an easy race,” Ryan said

“Azkadellia will be a big danger. The Godolphin filly Ghisoni will also be hard to beat at the weights.”

Solicit was placed in two Group One races as a three-year-old including the Vinery Stud Stakes

when she ran second to Lucia Valentina.

Azkadellia, to be ridden by Hong Kong-based Australian Brett Prebble, goes to Sydney off a Group Three win in the Mannerism Stakes at Caulfield.

Lucia Valentina has been assigned top weight of 58kg in the $600,000 handicap but Lees is content to tackle the race first-up in preference to the weight-for-age Group One George Ryder Stakes (1500m) the following week.

“I think it’s probably the better option for her,” Lees said.

“She’s well suited at 1500 metres first-up, she’s always very strong through the line and she’s won first-up over 1400 metres on heavy ground before.

“She’s done very well since her trial and there’s some residual fitness there too.”

The daughter of Savabeel was last seen finishing fifth behind A Shin Hikari in the Group One Hong Kong Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin in December.

Meanwhile it will be the last chance for a Golden Slipper start with the running of the Group Two Magic Night Stakes (1200m) for fillies and Group Two Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) for colts and geldings to round out the field for the following week’s richest two year-old race in Australia.

Godolphin’s Calliope, a late scratching from last week’s Reisling Stakes, will try to make the field this week.
