Welcome to the return of Sportsbeat for another year.

A new AFL season is just around the corner and we will have the latest news and activity, not only from our two local clubs Adelaide and Port Adelaide who are both in for exciting times ahead, but around the whole competition.

Dion Hayman is back to give you the statistical analysis of every game over every round while also compiling the hugely popular Super Quiz.

Chris Kendall’s wealth of knowledge of the SANFL has the second best competition in Australia covered with weekly previews of every match.

Sporstbeat will also delve into the closing stages of cricket’s World Cup as the finals release further interest in the tournament across Australia and New Zealand.

The Ashes will be at our forefront again in July as well.

Is this the year for Adelaide United to show its full potential come finals time and bring home another trophy to add to the inaugural FFA Cup won last year?

We will be hot on the Reds trail as they look for A-League championship success that has so far eluded them.

The V8s have already revved up the streets of Adelaide and it looks like a few new contenders are ready to take the Red Bull team’s crown.

Talking of Red Bull, it was a slow start for Daniel Ricciardo at the weekend in the opening race of the championships in Melbourne and it could be a long season for the smiling Aussie as he chases title success.

Meanwhile, we have a new Aussie to cheer on in MotoGP with rising star Jack Miller making history by becoming the first rider to jump from Moto3 straight to the top level.

The Wallabies will be hoping to settle before the rugby union

World Cup begins in England in late September.

There are high hopes in the Davis Cup again too, after Australia advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time in nearly 10 years where it will meet Kazakhstan in Darwin in July.

We’ll also be interested in the Aussies showing in the US Masters at Augusta in a few weeks with Jason Day ready to shine among others.

At the same time, horse racing will remain high on our agenda as we to try and find you some winners, especially during the Autumn and Spring carnivals.

Hopefully there will even be more global success, in particular at Royal Ascot in June, for our star equine performers.

We’ll be on top of all the sporting news throughout the year, but if there is something you want to see, let us know at [email protected].

Sportsbeat’s back

The success of the minnow countries has been the saving light of the long-winded preliminary rounds of cricket’s World Cup.

Thoughts of future World Cups without these lower ranked nations will prevent us from seeing the likes of Bangladesh beating the Poms or Ireland over powering the mighty West Indies and thus the development of the game around the world will be severely affected.

We now enter the serious finals stage of the competition where the action is set to really hot up, but what really should be considered is whether England’s results here place it among those minnows now for future World Cups?

Did several of the Formula One racing teams forget when the 2015 Championships start?

Many seemed ill prepared for the opening race of the new season in Melbourne last weekend, lacking in engine set-up or even driver combinations.

Those with Honda and Renault engines, including the usually strong McLaren and Red Bull teams, struggled for pace and reliability while Sauber was in court right up to the last minute to settle driver disputes.

In a boring race, Mercedes was well ahead of the rest with no signs of the other constructers catching it already this year.

Did the big paying fans really get their money’s worth?

Coach Ken Hinkley will take his place back in the coaches box as well on Saturday after handing the reins to assistant Matthew Nicks for Port Adelaide’s first two NAB Challenge encounters.

Nicks came away with a win (40 points over West Coast at Norwood Oval) and a loss from his head coaching stint.

But Hinkley will be champing at the bit to get his hands back on the magnet board, especially against his old partner Walsh for the first time, and take back charge of the side to settle it for the trip to Perth to face Fremantle in round one.

It will be interesting to see if both sides come

Adelaide and Port Adelaide will wrap up their preparations for the 2015 premiership season with a NAB Challenge

Showdown on Saturday in what is likely to be the final football match at the former home of SA football, AAMI Stadium.

Although both clubs do not believe it is ideal to play each in trial clashes, it will be fitting end to football at the often chastised West Lakes venue.

Being the last time for the Crows and Power to work on their game plans and structures in match conditions before the start of the season in two weeks, both are set to field as close to round one sides as possible, making this a full-on hit-out.

While the two coaches won’t want to display all their cards to each other at 3:40pm on Saturday, they will expect their players to take it on like a regular season encounter.

With spots still on the line for round one positions, players are unlikely to hold back and would welcome the opportunity to get one-up on their closest rival early in the season.

After last week’s 19-point loss to Geelong, Adelaide coach Phil Walsh said that his players still had “work to do” and will be looking to see marked improvement from them this week in their attack on the ball and body along with their run and carry.

He will particularly be stressing that a better start than last week will be required to ensure they are not once again on the back foot from the outset.

Defenders Matthew Jaensch and Ricky Henderson and midfielder Sam Kerridge who did not face the Cats are likely to return this week.

But senior onballer Scott Thompson will miss another week with a hamstring injury and remains in doubt for the side’s opening round clash against North Melbourne at Adelaide Oval on Easter Sunday.

Port Adelaide took a vastly inexperienced line-up to Lavington last Saturday to face Richmond and went down by 66 points, but many of the star players rested from that match will play this week.

They include captain Travis Boak, Brad Ebert, Robbie Gray, Kane Cornes, Alipate Carlile, Jay Schulz and Justin Westhoff.

Chad Wingard (knee), Hamish Hartlett (groin) and Jackson Trengove (shoulder) are still unavailable.

out with a similar style considering Walsh’s knowledge of Hinkley’s game plan.

Meanwhile, the condition of AAMI Stadium has been under some conjecture too in recent weeks due to damage caused to the playing surface from the staging of the One Direction concert a few weeks ago.

It has been given the okay by both clubs to contest potentially the final clash on the ground for all time.

One question though – how much will the pies, pasties and beers cost on Saturday?

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

It’s been a relatively quiet off-season in the AFL, but it’s not long now until the first ball is bounced in anger for another year. We haven’t learnt much from the NAB Challenge, but a few tidbits have taken our fancy.• Will we get through the season without

Essendon taking all the headlines?• Did Stevie J send Ryan Crowley any well

wishes after this week’s revelations?• Can we go a week without mentioning

Patrick Dangerfield’s contract?

• Is the NAB Challenge really worth it – what do clubs get out of fielding inexperienced sides?

• Trials only seem to create season-ending injuries, a la Bulldog Tom Liberatore – like father, like son

• Fans look set to cop it in the hip pocket again with ticket pricing, although there is some reprieve in the cost of food and drink in Melbourne, just not in Adelaide

• The Adelaide Oval stadium agreement to benefit our two local clubs will affect the fans the hardest

But bring on the start of the season!

AFL news

The AFL career of Fremantle utility Ryan Crowley could be over – and it’s all because of a painkiller.

Crowley’s future hangs in the balance after he tested positive to a banned substance following the club’s round-17 win over GWS last year.

The 31 year-old was issued with a show-cause notice by ASADA in September, at which time he accepted a provisional suspension.

The 2012 best and fairest winner is expected to face the AFL’s anti-doping tribunal within the next month to plead his case.

Crowley, who considered retirement after being notified of the positive reading, is facing a suspension of up to two years.

The 188-game veteran battled back problems last year and he underwent surgery following the club’s exit from the finals.

Dockers chief executive Steve Rosich said it was believed the banned substance was contained in a painkiller that Crowley sourced himself.

“The painkiller was not prescribed by a

Fremantle staff member or club doctor,” Rosich said.

Rosich said he was shocked when he was told in late October that Crowley had failed a doping test.

The AFL’s anti-doping tribunal and ASADA take a dim view on any doping breaches – even if they are accidental.

St Kilda’s Ahmed Saad was suspended for 18 months in November 2013 after testing positive for a banned substance, believed to be contained in an energy supplement drink.

ASADA was unsuccessful in its bid to have the penalty raised to two years on appeal.

Crowley is already in the tail-end of his career and anything more than a six-month ban could force him to hang up his boots.

It remains unclear what Crowley tested positive for.

Crowley’s mysterious absence from pre-season games drew widespread questions last week, but the ASADA revelations have shed light on the matter.

His acceptance of a provisional suspension is not an admission of guilt or wrongdoing, but

it does mean any ban will be backdated from September last year.

Should Crowley be suspended, it would be a huge blow to Fremantle’s flag hopes.

Crowley has established himself as the competition’s premier tagger over the past three seasons, and his potential absence means Matt de Boer is likely to be thrust into the shut-down role.

Defender Zac Dawson (groin) and Hayden Ballantyne (calf) are others set to miss the start of the season, while Colin Sylvia is unlikely to play for the Dockers again after being exiled to WAFL club Peel Thunder for poor training standards.

Crowley, who has appointed independent legal advisers to assist him with the matter, read out a brief statement on Monday.

The revelations surrounding Crowley is another hit to the AFL, who are still dealing with the long-running drugs controversy surrounding Essendon.

There are big expectations at both our local AFL clubs for a highly promising season in 2015.

At Alberton, getting so close to the advancing to the last day of September last year has many feeling that their chance to return to the MCG on that big day is this year.

In fact, the hierarchy at Port Adelaide would be gravely disappointed if that goal was not achieved.

It will all centre around belief though as we have seen that fitness and skill will not be an issue.

The Power has improved its playing list, filling its deficiency in ruck and forward potency with the inclusion of former Bomber Patrick Ryder. But his match fitness and understanding of coach Ken Hinkley’s game plan may take a while to develop with his absence from the club’s NAB Challenge sides due to the ongoing Essendon supplements saga.

The rest of the Power’s improvement must come from the continuing development of the existing squad and limited injuries as has been the case over recent years.

Across town, a new coach always seems to bring renewed optimism among both players and fans.

History shows that Adelaide performs well in the first season of a new mentor, but it’s following seasons where the improvement hasn’t been forthcoming.

That will be Phil Walsh’s primary goal at the Crows to ensure the much-hyped success does come to the club.

This will be very much a structured year under Walsh where his philosophies will be engrained into the players to build on in future years.

However, in the meantime, a return to the finals is a must for the club for that growth to commence.

Walsh’s toughest test will be to formalise a strong back six, currently lacking in experience.

He has the nucleus of a potent forward line and a damaging midfield, so most of his efforts this year will be on producing a dour but hard-running defensive unit to ensure they do become a premiership threat.

Players should rally under the new leadership

of Taylor Walker as well.

Distraction will be faced though by the ongoing focus on Patrick Dangerfield’s contract before a resolution is made.

However, we can expect to see two strong outfits in this State once again with the premiership returning from across the border sooner than later.

As for the rest of the AFL competition, there will not be much change at the top with Hawthorn and Sydney still the teams to beat.

It’s a matter of can the Power topple them this year?

Will we see a slide from Geelong, has Fremantle peaked, can North Melbourne continue its rise up the ladder and impose itself and what of Richmond? – these are some of the questions being raised before the start of the season in a few weeks.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley will be a coach under pressure to achieve success this year while arch rival Carlton must decide on its coach Mick Malthouse’s fate before next year.

Melbourne, in its second season under Paul Roos, would want to see some improvement, but one can foresee St Kilda continuing to struggle and Essendon’s failings finally coming back to haunt it.

Brisbane and the West Coast look like sitting in the middle of the ladder for another season.

Ready to produce

AFL news

The addition of Dayne Beams (Collingwood), Allen Christensen (Geelong) and Mitch Robinson (Carlton) improves the depth of onballers and small forwards at the Lions, and they could be the surprise packets in 2015.

However, it will be a reduction of injuries to top-line players that will be the key to both Brisbane’s and the Eagles’ prospects going ahead.

You never know what you will get from the Western Bulldogs and it will be a tough learning curve for new coach Luke Beveridge as he comes to grips with tackling the head mentor’s role for the first time.

The movement can be expected to come from young clubs Gold Coast and GWS Giants which must be ready to pounce with greater exposure to the game at the top level.

Both will be hoping to really impose themselves on the competition now and push for their first finals appearance.

A boost of experience and leadership with Nick Malceski at the Suns and Ryan Griffen at the Giants should help put them in the mix.

Overall, it should be another enthralling season though, with football doing more of the talking this year rather than the off-field issues of recent years.

New Crows skipper Taylor Walker should inspire teammates to lift. Photo: AAP

SANFL team PREVIEWsBY CHRIS KENDALLMore in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

part ONECENTRAL DISTRICT

INS: Jackson O’Brien, Tim Meulendyks (returning), Connor Hargreaves (Yarrawonga), Chris Jensen (Belconnen), Tom Stevens (Echuca), Nick Gallard, Shane Walker (Renmark), Jesse Kemp (Kimba), Cohen Pettit (West Broken Hill)

OUTS: Josh Glenn (Gold Coast), Johann Wagner (Port Adelaide), Ben Nason (Glenelg), Ryan Williams (VFL), Brad Symes, Scott Dutschke, Cameron Milne (retired)

Missing the finals in 2014, for the first time in Roy Laird’s golden reign, will sting the Bulldogs over the summer and give the playing group plenty of fire in the belly to return to major round action. There is no question, however, that the departures will hurt the group with plenty of experience leaving the kennel, and this may be most felt in tight finishes in 2015.

Plenty of hunger among the incoming talent. However, with a number of country recruits keen to showcase their wares at league level and a combination of this and the remaining players from the premiership years will drive Central hard. Whether it has enough options in attack remain to be seen, although Bryce Retzlaff was a menacing target for much of 2014. No doubting the passion at Elizabeth, but the Bulldogs look set to finish around the same mark as last year.2015 PREDICTION: Seventh

North AdelaideINS: Lewis Johnston, Alex Spina (Adelaide), Derick Wanganeen

(Hawthorn), Mitch Curnow (Sturt), Brandan Parfitt (NT), Mitch Clisby (Melbourne, depending on current position as a top-up player for Essendon in NAB Challenge)

OUTS: Addison Burns, Harrison Wigg (Adelaide), Matt Campbell (retired), Stuart Hill, Campbell Combe, Justin Schahinger, Ben Williams (country)

Sixth place in 2014 seemed an underachievement to some. However, it reflected the loss of a number of key players from the 2013 grand final outfit and it was a credit to the group they were still pressing for finals deep in the year. The late loss of Campbell robs coach Ken McGregor of poise and run from defence, but Wanganeen offers flexibility at both ends of the ground. Johnston knows the system well and will undoubtedly straighten the Roosters’ attack.

Defence appears the Achilles heel at present with a considerable load onto the shoulders of Todd Miles in particular. They will really need to build on the run from the smaller defenders to take some of the load off. The late season emergence of Darren Shillabeer as a forward target gave North fans plenty to look forward to and no doubt opposition teams will monitor him more carefully and not allow him under the radar. Whether the playing group has improved sufficiently to make finals, looks a little doubtful at this stage.2015 PREDICTION: Sixth

NorwoodINS: Alex Georgiou (returns – Melbourne), Mitch Wilkins (returns

– North Melbourne), Andrew McInnes (Carlton), Mat Suckling (returns from VFL), Harry Viney (North Adelaide), Luke Partington, Brayden De Prinse (Port Magpies)

OUTS: Anthony Wilson (Adelaide), Kieran McGuinness, Gavin Hughes (retired), Mark Evans (Sturt), Luke Wilson (Port Magpies via Echunga), Andrew Kirwan (overseas), Angus Clarke (SAAFL), Aaron Luccon (country)

Aiming for a fourth consecutive flag, the pluses look to just outweigh the minuses from 2014. No question that the losses of McGuinness and Kirwan in particular will rob the Redlegs of run and carry, but Georgiou and Wilkins will almost be straight swaps. McInnes looks set to miss the opening few rounds, but Suckling’s grunt around the ball was crucial in the 2012 and 2013 flags and cannot be underestimated.

One of the biggest question marks of 2015 is not so much whether Norwood has improved its list, but whether the other nine clubs have improved theirs to go past it. There just don’t look to be enough debits to suggest a sudden slide, based on pure ability. But much of the test will be on the mental side this season. Coach Ben Warren showed his continued growth as a coach no matter what challenges emerged as 2014 rolled on. All things considered, the Redlegs look very hard to beat again in 2015.2015 PREDICTION: Premier

GlenelgINS: Christian Howard (returns – Western Bulldogs), Terry Milera

(St Kilda), Ben Nason (Central District), Jake Johansen (Port Magpies), Jarrhan Jacky (Subiaco)

OUTS: Alex Neal-Bullen, Billy Stretch (Melbourne), Cory Gregson (Geelong), Nathan Stark (Sturt), Andrew Hooper, Tom Muir (returning to Victoria), Mitch Thorp (returning to Tasmania), Ty Allen (retired)

After a wooden spoon in 2014, there is no other direction for the Tigers to go in 2015. Incoming coach Matthew Lokan will not take a cautious approach either into the mission to restore Glenelg to a genuine contender. Selective recruiting targeted pace as a major area of improvement and it will certainly gain some excellent outside run with the likes of Milera, Johansen and Jacky. There are some leadership losses that will affect the side, particularly Allen, but this will throw the impetus now onto the second level players to seize their chance and step forward to become leaders.

There is no questioning much of the talent at Brighton Road, but how long they can sustain an upward curve as the season progresses will be one of the tests for the coaching group. Certainly, the incoming AFL experience will help, but there still looks to be some doubts over how often the attack can manufacture a winning score. Will rise, but not quite finals yet.2015 PREDICTION: Ninth

A delaide United faces a season-defining clash against arch-rival Melbourne Victory

at Coopers Stadium on Saturday night.

With six rounds before the finals, just one point separates the two sides and the Reds ability to finish in the top two could be determined by the result of this match.

Victory is third on the A-League ladder, two spots ahead of Adelaide United in fifth.

The Reds are also just three points off top side Wellington Phoenix.

Thus games like these, especially at home, become crucial to their chances of finishing higher up the ladder.

“You can feel all the top five teams on the ladder and see that we are all within three points of each other so we have a massive game against our big rivals this week,” match-winner from last week’s 2-1 win over Central Coast

Mariners, Craig Goodwin said.

“We definitely want to win the game, and if we can it’ll put us in a good position to finish as high as we can for the finals series.”

Goodwin has declared that the win over the Mariners had boosted the side’s confidence as well going into

this week’s all-important encounter.

His return to the starting line-up was a key factor to the Reds’ performance too, with his deft playmaking skills clearly missing in previous weeks.

Adding further intrigue to the contest is coach Josep Gombau’s

Season-defining clash for Reds

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

N ow just two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United and facing the Red

Devils this weekend, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers isn’t content with just chasing a UEFA Champions League berth and has his eyes firmly on second spot in the English Premier League.

The Reds have been in blistering form in 2015, while the reigning champions have faded. Rodgers’ side continued its winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Swansea City on Monday.

It proved a vital win for the

Reds who risked losing ground of Manchester United after it hammered home a 3-0 advantage over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Liverpool is now just four points behind Manchester City with nine games remaining this season and Rodgers insists his team will look to finish as high as possible.

“Our aim is to finish as high as we can, not just to finish fourth,” the Northern Irish coach told Sky Sports.

“We go three points behind Arsenal, and obviously with

Liverpool eyes second spotManchester City losing at the weekend it gives us an opportunity there for that, to push on.”

Liverpool recorded its sixth straight clean sheet away from home, its longest run since 1972.

Rodgers believes that streak is testament to how much the side has improved recently.

“We know we can go away from home and win because of the character of the team and the resilience of the team, and obviously importantly the quality,” he said.

“I think it shows you the strides the team is making. Six in a row away from home is a great, great effort from the players.

“Our mentality, the run and confidence we have at the moment we’re just going to take that into every game and see where it takes us.”

This week’s match at Anfield could now set the tone for the remainder of the season.

Another Reds’ victory will see them move above United and into the top four.

Soccer Newsdesire to finally achieve a victory over his side’s nemesis.

In five attempts, Gombau has never celebrated a win against Melbourne, only managing two draws and three losses in his time at the club.

This season the record is a 1-all draw at Adelaide Oval last October in front of the largest home crowd for a soccer match. It then proceeded to lose 3-2 at AAMI Park in November, with all goals being scored in an enthralling first half.

Some key players loom large in this Erase Racism Round clash. Star United midfielder Marcelo Carrusca needs to have a major impact for the Reds to win while Adelaide must curtail the influence of arguably the league’s most devastating player at present in Victory winger Fahid Ben Khalfallah.

GENERAL SPORT

The Sheffield Shield final will go ahead in Hobart after the Western Australian Cricket Association resisted the urge to

launch legal action against Cricket Australia.

The WACA considered seeking a Federal Court injunction after being told the Warriors would have to travel to Bellerive Oval to play Victoria in the Shield decider, starting on Saturday.

The ladder-leading Bushrangers were unable to host the final at the MCG (World Cup) or Junction Oval (redevelopment), meaning they had to look outside of their State for a suitable first-class venue.

But under CA rules, if a team can’t host the final within its own state, it must waive its hosting rights.

Two-time V8 Supercars champion Marcos Ambrose has surprisingly asked for a break from driving as he reassesses his

much hyped comeback.

His Ford outfit DJR Team Penske dropped the bombshell on Tuesday in a statement that claimed Ambrose “has requested to be temporarily relieved as driver” effective immediately.

The Tasmanian’s withdrawal came barely a fortnight before he was set to make an emotional return to his home state’s V8 event at Symmons Plains.

Scott Pye will replace Ambrose in the Ford team.

CA decided to relax that ruling on this occasion because it felt Victoria shouldn’t be penalised for giving up its home ground for World Cup duties.

WACA chief executive Christina Matthews wasn’t happy with the outcome, but she has resisted the temptation to launch legal action.

“The longer we drag this out, the more difficult it is on our team,” Matthews said.

“We think the most important thing is we give the team the best chance to win the Sheffield Shield. And in the time frame we’ve got, that’s just accepting what happened and moving on.

“We have our view on what the rules say, and we think it’s very clear.

Ambrose requested a break after contesting just two rounds – the season opener in Adelaide and last weekend’s non championship event at the Australian Grand Prix.

“Following the Australian Grand Prix, Marcos came to the team, requesting to be replaced from his upcoming driving responsibilities, while he continues the transition back into V8 Supercars competition,” team boss Roger Penske said.

“Entering the season, Marcos understood that the competition in this series is at a very high level and now realises that more time is required for this transition.”

“But we’re also cognisant that there are extenuating circumstances for Victoria, being the World Cup has taken their prime home ground out of play.”

Coach Justin Langer is confident his road warriors can overcome the travel burden and win the Shield title on enemy territory.

“I hold no fears in that because we won the One-Day Cup in Sydney; we played the BBL final (and won in Canberra),” Langer said.

“They were all controversial, but we got on with our job and got there and won those titles.

“If I am going to say anything controversial, it’s that if the playing conditions (rule book) aren’t suitable, then we have to change them. It’s as simple as that.

“I think Bellerive gives us more of a chance than perhaps Junction Oval, where it is a very flat wicket.

“We’ve shown all year that we can bowl sides out twice.

“We’ve had to win outright in the east a number of times and we have.”

Ambrose stressed that he was committed to the Ford team.

“I want to thank DJR Team Penske for the opportunity and support through the process of transitioning back into V8 Supercars,” Ambrose said.

“I would like to make it clear that I am fully committed to this team.”

Ambrose won 28 races over five seasons and captured back-to-back V8 Supercars titles from 2003-04.

However he has struggled since returning from a successful US NASCAR stint this year.

ith the World Cup now hitting the serious stage, mental fatigue will be the only thing that can prevent

Australia from claiming another one-day title.

It is all in front of the Aussies now as they have set themselves up for at least another World Cup final appearance at the MCG next Sunday, March 29.

Adelaide Oval will host Australia on Friday (today) in its quarter-final clash against Pakistan and would be expected to go into the clash unchanged from the side that comfortably defeated Scotland in Hobart last Saturday.

One area though that coach Darren Lehmann will be hoping to see some improvement is with the opening partnership.

The top pair of David Warner and Aaron Finch has struggled so far in each of their preliminary matches to combine for a big opening stand.

One of the two has been dismissed cheaply early on in each of their innings together, but in most cases the other has been able to compile a telling score to set up reasonable totals for the side.

On Friday, it would be ideal that both took on the attack of Pakistan from the start to make it easier on the middle order following.

Shane Watson is still to find his best position in the side. His batting failures have been costly, it is his bowling ability that has kept him in the side at the expense of the unfortunate George Bailey who scored 55 in his only match against England in the opening game of the tournament.

Watson was back at number three against the Scots last week, but he had looked his best coming in at number six when he scored a half century (67) against Sri Lanka at the SCG.

It is still a formidable line-up with Watson in the side, but he does need to perform to ensure his spot in the semi-final and final, if Australia advances.

Steve Smith has continued his stellar summer, looking good when elevated to number three against Sri Lanka, while captain

Michael Clarke has put all hamstring worries behind him.

Glenn Maxwell and James Faulkner have taken all before them in the middle order.

On the bowling front, Australia will go into Friday’s day-night clash spearheaded by a three-pronged speed attack again with bowler of the series so far Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson and Pat Cummins.

All-rounders Faulkner and Maxwell have held their own here as well.

If the Adelaide Oval pitch proves to be on the slow side, Smith can add some spin to the contest.

Australia is well placed to move ahead in the competition but players wouldn’t want to lapse mentally against a Pakistan outfit not filled with batting and bowling strength, but still with individuals who can prove difficult to contain.

The Aussies cannot afford to let the likes of Ahmed Shehzad and Safraz Ahmed take control in Pakistan’s top order of batting while captain Misbah ul-Haq has been his side’s best runs-scorer.

Bowling-wise pacemen Sohail Khan and Wahab Riaz have all shown they can cause batsmen trouble.

After a slow start to the World Cup losing its opening two matches, Pakistan did upset a strong South African side and is settled on the Adelaide Oval, having played two of its preliminary matches on the ground.

The winner here will meet either Sri Lanka or South Africa (SCG) in a semi-final, while the other quarter-finals are between Bangladesh and India (MCG), and New Zealand and West Indies (Wellington).

success in Australia.

Real Impact, To the World, Tosen Stardom and World Ace have all settled in well to Australian conditions and will prove tough contenders when they tackle the local hopes over coming weeks.

Four year-old To The World was rated Japan’s best three year-old last year and is nominated for the Group One BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday 28 March and the Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday 11 April.

Talented four-year-old Tosen Stardom captured the Group Three Challenge Cup (1800m) last start at Hanshin in December and could line up in this week’s Group One Ranvet (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens before heading to the Queen Elizabeth.

HORSE RACINGJ apanese horses returned to Australia last

year to once again conquer our Spring Carnival and now they are hoping to do the

same to our Autumn Carnival in Sydney.

Admire Rakti blitzed the field to take out the 2014 Caulfield Cup before fatefully passing away after running the favourite in the Melbourne Cup a few weeks later.

His success came after Japanese pair Delta Blues and Pop Rock quinellaed the 2006 Melbourne Cup, but we did not see the Japanese visit our shores again until last year because of the Equine Influenza Outbreak in 2007.

The rich Championships series has now lured four super Japanese horses, who have been going through their paces in quarantine at Canterbury Park preparing to claim more

A three-time Stakes winner World Ace took out the Group Two Yomiuri Milers Cup (1600m) in record time at Kyoto and finished fourth behind Able Friend in the Group One Hong Kong Mile (1600m) in December.

The six year-old is in Sydney for Saturday’s Group One George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens and the Group One Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday 4 April.

The three are trained by Japan’s leading trainer Yasutoshi Ikee.

Seven year-old Real Impact is a triple Group winner of the Group One Yasuda Kinen (1600m) in Tokyo and twice winning the Group Two Hanshin Cup (1400m).

Trained by Noriyuki Hori, Real Impact is on a Doncaster path via this week’s George Ryder as well.

Another international hope is the George Moore-trained Dominant, from Hong Kong.

The tough seven year-old stayer won the 2013 Gr 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m) and is here to have a tilt at the Group One Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday 11 April and will take on the BMW along the way.

Japanese back to raid Championships

R andwick Guineas winner Hallowed Crown ticked off his Group One Rosehill Guineas preparations with co-trainer James

Cummings confident the horse is ready to make the step up to 2000m this weekend.

Hallowed Crown is the winner of six from seven starts and on Saturday will go past 1600m for the first time in the Group One three year-old feature.

“He was lovely and relaxed (in work during the week). He’s enjoying his work over ground,” Cummings said.

“My grandfather (Bart Cummings) tells me when a horse is happy they get better and better.

“From what I saw from him in his work on Saturday and today, it’s not a horse that wants to savage the line every time he comes out to work. It’s the work of a horse that’s building, and keeps building into his preparation and he’s built up a good record.

“I concede there is pressure to keep adding to that on Saturday but I’m confident the horse is spot on.”

Cummings says Hallowed Crown’s inner fighting qualities are what gives him confidence heading into Saturday’s previously uncharted distance.

The young Randwick trainer believes the horse’s attitude and racing demeanour will carry him a long way, as far as running the distance.

“He’s a grandson of Street Cry, he’s the son of a Kentucky Derby (Street Sense) winner from the family of Zabeel and Baryshnikov and he just loves to find the line,” he said.

“He loves the contest. The horse wants to range up to the horse in front of him, eye-ball him and go by. That’s what he loves doing.”

Newcastle trainer Kris Lees has vowed star mare Lucia Valentina will be close to her peak going into the Group One Ranvet Stakes (2000m) on Saturday.

He said that her second-up run was consistent with her previous two second-up runs with him.

“She raced a little flat and to the eye could have finished a couple of lengths closer. However, she’s worked very well since,” he said

“(She) had a really good gallop (on Tuesday) morning without being put under any pressure and she heads to the Ranvet Stakes in pretty good condition.

“We tried a couple of things different with her second-up. I only had one trial leading into her first-up run and tried to keep her a little fresh, but we still got the same result so I’m hoping we get the same result as we got previously third run in.”

Top jockey Hugh Bowman will ride her on Saturday and Lees continues to be committed to a Queen Elizabeth start for her following the Ranvet.

More Crowning glory to come

Not even an unfavourable barrier draw will wane trainer Gai Waterhouse’s confidence about Group One Golden

Slipper favourite Vancouver.

“He’ll win, and the most important thing is he’ll be better odds,” Waterhouse said after her top fancy drew the outside gate 18 for Saturday’s two year-old classic.

“Barriers – you can’t do anything about them. It’s like having mum or dad, you can’t say I want to change my parents, you’re stuck with them.”

Vancouver has been all the rage with punters after his 3-1/4 length victory in the Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on 7 March, which left him undefeated from three starts.

His time of 1:08.83 had most time analysts declaring him unbeatable in the world’s richest two year-old race.

Vancouver is still a clear favourite despite the barrier draw, drifting slightly from $2.50 to $2.80.

Assuming the emergencies don’t get a start, the son of Medaglia D’Oro will jump from barrier 15.

Star Watch for Waterhouse’s late father Tommy Smith in 1988 was the only horse to taste success from the widest barrier in the 57-year history of the Golden Slipper.

“He can do anything, he can go forward, he can go back. Tommy’s (Berry) won a Golden Slipper, he can use his brains from the outside,” Waterhouse said.

Waterhouse has three runners in the race with her two fillies English (barrier six) and Speak Fondly (barrier 10) have fared much better with the draw.

If Waterhouse, already a five-time Golden Slipper winner, can win this year, she will equal the all-time win record held by her legendary father.

“You dream about things like that. I love this race,” Waterhouse said.

“I think this is the most exciting race in the world, not just in Australia. It symbolises everything that we stand for which is all about vitality and youth.”

Godolphin trainer John O’Shea couldn’t have dreamt of a better result at Slipper barrier draw.

O’Shea’s four-pronged attack is spearheaded by Exosphere (barrier 10), with Furnaces (barrier one), Haptic (barrier three) and Ottoman (barrier eight) rounding out the Godolphin-owned quartet.

“I think the market has got it right in regards to Exosphere ($4.40),” O’Shea said.

“He would be my top pick going into the race. He’s untapped. I didn’t want to draw soft and he’ll come into eight if the emergencies don’t get a run – that’s ideal.”

O’Shea is surprised though regarding the odds on offer about his Exceed And Excel filly Ottoman ($34).

“She’s the best value, no doubt,” O’Shea said.

“She was favourite for this race at one stage. She disappointed in the Silver Slipper but her run in the Reisling showed me she was right back to where I want her.”

Top jockey Blake Shinn believes Saturday’s Group One George Ryder Stakes (1500m) is the perfect

race for the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Shooting To Win to return to the winner’s list.

In two starts as an autumn three-year-old, Shooting To Win has been a beaten favourite, finishing third and fourth in two starts behind Hallowed Crown.

In his latest effort, Shinn came in for criticism from some quarters over his decision to lead the small field in the Group I Randwick Guineas before finishing fourth, which he admitted was “not ideal”.

However, Shinn says the George Ryder

Stakes is where Shooting To Win can show his true wares and regain some of the gloss the Caulfield Guineas winner has lost in his two 2015 runs.

“Saturday is a great race for him,” Shinn said. “Third-up, 1500 and he gets his chance to sit off the speed, which I’m sure will give him every chance to show what he’s made of.

“He’s working brilliantly and the three-year-olds are showing that they’re capable against the older horses this season.

“I think he’s got the ability to match it with the older horses at weight-for-age. If the breaks go his way then I think he’s capable of winning.”

He said the danger to Shooting To Win on Saturday “is the unknown” with the Japanese contingent of World Ace and Real Impact.

Peter Snowden was also happy with the weight allocated to last start winner Miracle’s Of Life for Saturday’s Group One The Galaxy (1100m).

He was especially pleased to receive 55.5kg for the handicap where the top weight is Tiger Tees with 58kg.

“That’s excellent, that’s a good weight for her and I’m very happy with that,” Snowden said.

The 2013 Blue Diamond winner resumed from a spell to score an easy win in the Group Two Challenge Stakes (1000m) at weight-for-age at Randwick on 7 March.

It’s a race that has proved the most successful lead-up to The Galaxy since 2003 with four winners.

Gai upbeat as usual

Shooting for a win

A BIG GAME HUNTER WENT ON A SAFARI with his wife and mother-in-law.

One morning, while still deep in the jungle, the hunter’s wife awakened to find her mother gone.

She woke her husband, and they both set off in search of the old woman.

In a clearing not far from the camp, they came upon a chilling sight.

The mother-in-law was standing face-to-face with a lion

“What are we going to do?” his horrified wife asked.

“Nothing,” her husband replied, “The lion got himself into this mess, let him get himself out of it.”

IT’s a joke

Leading Adelaide trainer Philip Stokes will be hoping to add to his interstate

spring success when he takes three top chances to Bendigo on Saturday.

During the Flemington Spring Carnival, Stokes celebrated victory with stable star Hucklebuck in the Group One Emirates Stakes and Group Three Yellowglen Stakes, and Éclair Big Bang and Held Hostage also picking up wins during the carnival.

He is now off to Bendigo for its biggest race meeting of the year with a strong threesome looking for more rich prizemoney to come his way.

Dylanson will contest the $150,000 Golden Mile (1600m), Eclair Choice runs in the $150,000 Bendigo Guineas (1400m), while Held Hostage is back to step out in the $110,000 Bendigo Gold Bracelet.

“I was happy with all of them this morning, so they’ll be coming across,” Stokes said.

“It’s good prizemoney, we had a runner there last year and won a race, so we thought we’d try again.”

The Golden Mile shapes as the toughest edition yet with the likes of Kiwi Group One winner Puccini backing up from the Australian Cup, Lindsay Park being represented by well-performed international duo Guest Of Honour and Stipulate, classy Ciaron Maher miler Akavoroun and Zabeelionaire from the Leon and Troy Corstens stable.

Dylanson upstaged a quality field at Listed level last time out and Stokes said he was deserving of a shot at some bigger scalps.

“He’s in career-best form,” Stokes said. “His last three runs he’s won a Listed race and been placed in two others.

“He seems to be very strong at the mile, he goes back down in the weights to the minimum (54kg) and while it’s a tough race, he’s rock-hard fit and is in good form.”

Stokes is using the Guineas as a guide to see where Éclair Choice goes next, but still expects him to perform well on Saturday.

Held Hostage is being earmarked for the Group Two Queen Of The South (1600m) in Adelaide on 2 May.
