s we head into the middle of summer with many unknowns affecting our daily lives, Vegas PBS brings you a slate of new and familiar favorite programs to occupy the time formerly spent on travel and vacations. They include the return of a popular British mystery to the launch of a Vegas PBS-produced children’s educational program modeled on summer camp. We continue to seek out programs that provide you with stability, perspective, entertainment, and education despite the swirl of current events. In this and the coming

months of 2020, Vegas PBS will be your home for informative content that brings light, not heat, to current events, as well as the entertainment you enjoy. Last month we featured the first in a series of programs focusing on voting history and the upcoming 2020 Election. The Vegas PBS Spotlight Series, our quarterly initiative to bring light to important and timely themes, will begin to focus on Vote 2020, and if they occur, with PBS NewsHour coverage of the Republican and Democratic conventions, as well as each Presidential and Vice-Presidential debate. We are also working on possible local debates among candidates in closely contested races. Vegas PBS is pleased to announce the return of Endeavour on Masterpiece this month with the brand-new 7th season. Season 6’s finale seemed to wrap up the series, and viewers wondered if it was the end of Endeavour. But the BBC persevered so Endeavour Morse and his mentor, Fred Friday, are back solving devilish mysteries in Oxford. Vegas PBS remains deeply involved with educational challenges created by Covid-19. We have provided 40 high schools with technical assistance to enable streamed graduation ceremonies and expanded teacher training and testing services to help local districts prepare for the challenges of distance education next fall. To support at-home learning during the summer break, Vegas PBS has created a new series called Vegas PBS STEAM Camp. This new locally produced series for children ages 6-8, is designed to bring the fun and discovery associated with the annual ritual of summer camp directly into children’s homes. A phenomenon-based question will drive each episode’s exploration, and the program will use community experts, interactive at-home STEAM challenges (STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and literacy extensions to support inquiry-based learning and conceptual understanding. The three-episode pilot series will air Fridays beginning August 7 at 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., repeating Sundays at 9 a.m. In addition to the PBS KIDS programming your donations support, Vegas PBS continues to support educators throughout our state. With the support of the Nevada Department of Education, Vegas PBS launched OnePlaceNV — an online educational resource portal filled with digital learning assets that align with curriculum standards. OnePlaceNV provides educators with tools and strategies for effective online instruction as well as professional development. So as you spend more time at home, stay tuned for relevant and exciting programs from Vegas PBS. Thanks to your ongoing support, Vegas PBS makes the content you love and depend on available to everyone in our community.

Oxford City Police’s finest is back in a new three-part series that delivers high drama, tragedy, grief and stunning visuals. Opening on New Year’s Eve 1969, normal order has been resumed and the team reunites at Castle Gate CID, with Chief Superintendent Bright back in charge. However, the events of the past year have left their mark: old friendships will be challenged, and new relationships will blossom. Amidst the dawn of women’s liberation, social

Midsomer Murders at 7:30 p.m. The classic English village murder mystery has long been a favorite of aficionados of detective stories. A veteran Detective Chief Inspector and his young sergeant investigate murders around the regional community of Midsomer County.

Death in Paradise at 9 p.m(Beginning August 8) British Detective Jack Mooney is starting to get to know the people and places of the (fictional) Caribbean island of Saint Marie, but he has little time for sightseeing, as there are some fiendishly clever murders to solve. From a local radio DJ, murdered while live on air, to a zookeeper killed by a poisoned dart, Jack and his team have their work cut out!

Silent Witness at 10 p.m. (New episodes through August 15) Forensic pathologists face personal and professional challenges in a moody, tense thriller that moves from the crime scene to the lab. This month, with Nikki locked in a struggle for survival, Jack must realize all of his abilities to track her down. When a mysterious person calls to make demands in return for Nikki’s release, Jack’s moral principles are put to the test.

Professor T Season 2 at 11 p.m. (Beginning August 8 — new episodes) Eccentric Professor T is released from the hospital, but the outside world is not quite as he left it; a new professor has been appointed in his place, which means war. In German with English subtitles.

progression and scientific growth, the 1970s begin for Oxford’s finest with the discovery of a body at the canal towpath on New Year’s Day. With the only clue in the investigation a witness who heard whistling on the night of the crime, the team have their work cut out to uncover their culprit. Enjoy two related series in August: Inspector Morse starts from Season 1, and Inspector Lewis finishes its mini marathon. View our entire August lineup and allow yourself to rediscover the thrill of drama at its finest.

Reagan: American Experience Tuesdays, August 4 and 11 at 8 p.m. This fascinating biography examines Reagan’s life through the testimony of family — including Nancy Reagan and three of his children — along with friends, historians, biographers and other witnesses to Reagan’s private life and public career. Ronald Reagan was one of the most popular presidents of the 20th Century — and one of the most controversial. When his Hollywood career began to wane, Reagan turned to politics. One by one, his opponents underestimated him; one by one, Reagan surprised them, rising to become a president who always preferred to see America as a ‘shining city on a hill’.

The War, A Film by Ken BurnsMondays at 10 p.m.through August 17th This seven-part documentary tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of men and women from four quintessentially American towns. The series explores the most intimate human dimensions of the greatest cataclysm in history — a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America — and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives.

Great Performances at the Met: ToscaSunday, August 2 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

In exchange for her lover’s freedom, Tosca promises her devotion to Scarpia, then kills him. Tosca informs Cavaradossi that he is free now, but before departing the city he must go through a mock execution, which ends tragically. Emmanuel Villaume conducts. Isabel Leonard hosts.

You won’t want to miss this stunning production of Puccini’s classic “Tosca,” starring Sonya Yoncheva as the title prima donna alongside Vittorio Grigolo as her revolutionary artist lover Cavaradossi and Željko Lučić as chief of police Scarpia. Sir David McVicar’s ravishing production is set in 1800 Rome, where painter Cavaradossi helps the escaped political prisoner Angelotti hide from the police while his jealous lover,

opera diva Floria Tosca, suspects him of being unfaithful. The sadistic chief of police Baron Scarpia, who is hunting the fugitive, longs for Tosca and vows to bend the singer to his will after arousing her jealousy. Scarpia suspects Cavaradossi of aiding the fugitive and has the artist arrested and tortured. A frightened Tosca reveals the political prisoner’s whereabouts, but when Cavaradossi cries out in defiance of tyranny, he is carried away to be executed.

Why We Support Vegas PBS...

The Beadle family has been in Las Vegas since 1977 and has supported our local Vegas PBS station since then. We love the traditional PBS programs such as Masterpiece, NewsHour, Antiques Roadshow, NOVA, This Old House, Rick Steves’ Europe and Great Performances, to mention just a few. However, it was exciting when Vegas PBS started expanding its programming by broadcasting the Create programs. Create is a sister channel that offers entertaining and instructional programing in cooking, arts & crafts, gardening, home improvement, “how-to,” DIY, and travel. It has wonderful opportunities to learn a whole range of new subjects and skills in smaller, “bite-sized” pieces.

Our local supporters may not realize that they can sponsor Create programs. We support Trails to Oishii Tokyo [Oishii means “delicious” or “tasty”] as well as Journeys in Japan. These two programs encompass many different subjects—travel, culture, cooking, arts & crafts, and even touch upon agriculture, fishing and ecology in Japan. Both are so interesting, and what an opportunity to learn about a different country! Programs like these are certainly not like any others on commercial TV. Thank goodness that Vegas PBS offers such unusual programs that promote travel and life-long learning. Please consider supporting programs that interest you on Create.

When you support quality Vegas PBS programming, you’re helping build a stronger and healthier community. Simply select fromfavorite evening programs or underwrite adaytime show that children enjoy. We’ll do therest. While our programming value is high, its price is low. For information on how tosponsor Vegas PBS programming, contactSummer Collins at [email protected].
