• Close and either lock or secure bin lidsto prevent possible damage duringhigh winds.

• Avoid filling your bin during periods ofhigh winds to prevent spillage and injuryfrom unsecured bin lids.

• Overloaded bins pose a risk to health,safety and the environment.

• Ensure that only permitted* waste isplaced in your bin.

• To reduce odours, bag waste prior toplacing in the bin. Always bag dustywaste.

• DO NOT climb into or on bins.

Wastes not permitted in bins include but are not limited to– flammable substances, gas cylinders, infectious material,animals, liquids, asbestos, chemicals, ash, engine blocks,soil, rocks, bricks and concrete.

THIS BROCHURE IS NOT A RISK ASSESSMENTFOR THE USE OF WASTE AND RECYCLING BINSAND EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED BY SITA IN YOURWORKPLACE. EACH WORKPLACE ISDIFFERENT SO YOU WILL NEED TO MAKEYOUR OWN ASSESSMENT OF THE BESTMETHOD OF ENSURING THE SAFETY OF YOUREMPLOYEES AND CONTRACTORS. THIS MAYINCLUDE COMPLETING A RISK ASSESSMENTBEFORE YOU USE WASTE AND RECYCLINGBINS AND EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED BY SITA.

• Injuries and property damage could occurif bins are situated on uneven or softsurfaces, steep gradients or stored inconfined areas.

• Back and shoulder injuries may resultfrom moving heavy or overfull bins.

• SITA recommends that you contact yourOH&S Authority for information in relationto Manual Handling before you use wasteand recycling bins and equipmentsupplied by SITA.

• For hygiene and safety reasons lidsshould never be permanently proppedopen.

• Safety latches are designed to hold binlids up temporarily whilst filling only.Always use latches with care.

• When the bin is not in use, ensure the lidis fully closed to minimise odours, and tokeep flies and other pests away.

BIN LIDSAND YOUR SAFETY

SAFE HANDLING OFBINS WITH WHEELS

• When opening the lid stand at the frontcorner and lift the lid carefully until youobserve the safety latch engage.

• To close the lid, stand at the side andrelease the safety latch slowly,ensuring your limbs are well awayfrom any pinch points.

• Make sure employees or contractors arenot working alone if two people arerequired for the job.
