A Note from Father Daniel

Reopening our churches—Part II

We all look forward to the day when it will be safe to

congregate to celebrate our faith. This said, we must make sure

that when we do we take every precaution to protect the lives of

all present and all that they will encounter after attending Mass.

This will require many changes, that will come with a sense of

loss. We must remember why we are doing this, to protect life,

and take courage. We must also remember that most of these

changes will be temporary. We should also take this disruption

of our liturgical routine as an opportunity to rediscover the

liturgy, and maybe even to discover new aspects that will be

brought to our attention by the new circumstances and

practices. In all things God is working out our salvation.

May God give us all flexibility, openness and patience through

this next phase of this pandemic.

Our bishop has sent some directives, which I present in the

following lines with adaptations as pertinent to our parishes:

The primary intent of all parishes is the celebration of Holy

Mass with the faithful present for the administration of the

Sacraments. Every other pastoral activity, while important to

parish life, should remain limited and remote in order for our

parishes first to be able gradually to give our people the

opportunity to worship God and have greater access to the

Sacraments. This must remain our primary focus: to celebrate

with our people Holy Mass and the Sacraments of the Church

with the reverence due to them, particularly the care of the

Most Blessed Sacrament, as well as taking all reasonable

precautions to preserve the safety and health of the faithful and

ordained ministers. Thus, what we are able to offer our

parishioners as we continue to function under restrictions, and

what they should expect, will be quite different from that to

which they may be accustomed. Patience and charity toward our

neighbors, particularly the vulnerable, will greatly assist in a

slow, but well-ordered transition back to Mass with the

faithful present.

It must be noted that even with all precautions taken, there still

will be a risk for anyone who attends a public gathering to

contract the coronavirus. Anyone who is sick should stay home,

as should anyone who fears contracting a disease by attending

Mass. Parishioners who are vulnerable should remain at

home in accordance with the recommendations of the World

Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease

Control (CDC). For this reason, the obligation to attend Sunday

Mass will remain suspended for all Catholics in the Diocese of

Rochester until further notice. All Catholics, if it is possible

for them, should be cautious to maintain their spiritual

practices, to increase their prayer and to attend Mass

online as well as other devotions and opportunities to

grow in their faith.

The Diocese will provide specific and detailed policies and guidelines to the

parishes for the celebration of Mass and the Sacraments, which are

already in preparation.

Here are some changes in practical aspects that we

can foresee:

• Strict physical distancing must be observed at all times,

defined as “avoiding close contact with those outside one’s

household.”

• Disinfecting cleaning will be necessary before every Mass.

• Public celebration of Mass with likely resume with limited

access and reduced numbers

• Access to the church will be through the main door ONLY

which will be propped open before Mass so that people do

not need to touch doors as they enter.

• Cry rooms and nurseries will be closed.

• All unnecessary chairs, tables, furniture will be removed to

limit cleaning.

• All missalettes, hymnals, prayer cards, and other paper

resources will be removed from pews.

• Not all pews will be used, intervening pews will be

cordoned off to assure six feet in all directions between

household groups or individuals.

• Holy Water fonts and Baptismal fonts will remain empty.

• Those attending Mass must bring and wear their own face

masks. No one old enough to wear a mask will be

admitted into church without one. Masks must remain

on throughout the Mass, will only be removed to take Holy

Communion and immediately put back on, to not be

removed until people are back in their cars.

• Single-use for that Mass only worship aids will be

distributed in print form and disposed of in receptacles

after Mass.

• The Book of Intercessions, will be removed until further

notice. As always you can submit your prayer intentions for

the bulletin via phone or online. These must be for yourself

or someone under your direct care. Intentions for third

parties will not be published to preserve people’s privacy.

• As already explained there will be no collection baskets

going around, all should donate online. If this is impossible

they should deposit their donations into the drop box safe

at the entrance of church.

• Liturgical ministries initially will be considerably limited:

A Note from Father Daniel (cont.)

The priest, One (1) lector, One (1) musician and one (1)

cantor. Due to the research that shows singing expels

significantly more aerosolized particles of virus than

speaking, choirs and congregational singing will not be

possible during this transitory period.

• There will be no Ushers nor greeters.

• There are to be no altar servers or sacristans until

further notice.

• There will be no coffee hours or congregations of the

faithful of any kind before or after Mass on the parish

campus until further notice.

• There will be no Extraordinary ministers of Holy

Communion other than the Pastoral Associate.

If you have any questions, ideas, comments or concerns

regarding these changes please do not hesitate to contact us.

As we prepare to gather again, please continue to nourish your

spiritual life in every way you can and to take advantage of the

many opportunities we are offering.

You are always in our thoughts and prayers. God is always

with us.

A Note from Dawn Regarding Our Mini Parade

Last week Father Daniel, Dawn and Emmanuel made a (very) small parade around our three parishes. We stopped at the homes of each of our faith

formation and youth ministry families, leaving them a small care package for these trying times we’re in. With a very few exceptions, we were able to have a

short, physically distant, conversation with parents and kids (while wearing masks). In total, we went to over 70 homes, driving 287 miles, through six counties! It was great to be able to see people in person, be able to check in with

each other, and pet some very friendly dogs!

Inside the care package were a variety of things, including individual bags for each child—younger children received bubbles and playdough and some sort of Bible craft, older kids received fun pens, pencils, a prayer, and some things to

make studying a little less painful. In addition we included some candy, a yo-yo, balloons, and a piece of bubble wrap to act as a stress reliever. We also gave each

household a container of Holy Water and a Rosary for each child. Household with a child preparing for First Communion also received a book of family prayers.

Parents, too, received a special bag which included the following items:

• Hershey’s Kiss – To remind them that God loves them

• Lifesaver – To keep them from drowning in everyday chores

• Pin – To pinpoint problems

• String – To help them tie up loose ends

• Band Aid – To help when the pain feels to be too much

• Paper Clip – To help them hold things together

• Rubber Band – To remind them to be

flexible

• Lollipop – To help them lick their

problems

• Penny – So they have the “cents” to

realize how valuable they are

While not extravagant and mostly silly—

the care package and visit were filled with love and concern for our families. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us.

We love you—We are thinking of you—We are praying for you!

As you all know, our parishes are on very tight budgets. The reality of not having public Masses with a collection is gravely impacting our finances — even through this lockdown our campuses still need to be maintained, our utilities paid, and salaries must continue. Please DO NOT leave donations ANY WHERE on church campus. Know that ALL donations left on church campus WILL BE LOST and we take NO responsibility for them.

There are TWO ways in which you can make your donations at this time:

1. (Preferred) Our online giving options from our website: www.netcatholic.org/donate. This is the safest and most effective option, now and ALWAYS. If you need assistance setting this up, please call the office at 607-241-0821.

2. You can mail your contributions to us:

HOLY CROSS: 375 George Road, Freeville, NY 13068 • SAINT ANTHONY: 312 Locke Road, Groton, NY 13073 • ALL SAINTS: 347 Ridge Road, Lansing, NY 14882.

Know that if you mail in your donations they will only be counted and deposited on around the 20th of each month. This means that if for instance you send in a check on April 16th and we receive it on April 21st, it will not be counted or deposited until around May 20th. We understand that some families will face unprecedented financial challenges at this time and will not be able to contribute to the church financially, please be at peace and contribute by keeping us in your prayers. If you and your family have been blessed with sufficient financial resources please consider not only keeping up your regular donations to the church but also making some additional donations to help us make up for the possible loss of income caused by this crisis. Thank you very much!
