WELCOME TO WORSHIP Welcome to worship. We hope your time here will be a blessing for you. We would like to give you information about the various ministries of the Parish: please ask one of the Welcomers or Sidespersons for a Parish Information Pack.

THE SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER The Great Fifty Days of Eastertide form a single festival period in which the tone of joy created at the Easter Vigil is sustained through the following seven weeks. Hence we call these the Sundays of Easter. The Church celebrates the gloriously risen Christ:

Triumphant in his glory now, his sceptre ruleth all, earth, heaven and hell before him bow, and at his footstool fall. (Fulbert of Chartres)

Early Christians gave the name Pentecost to this whole fifty-day span of rejoicing, which Tertullian calls ‘this most joyful period’ (laetissimum spatium). It is sometimes also called ‘Great Sunday’. The Easter Candle, which we lit at the beginning of Easter, stands prominently in church for all the Eastertide services and the Alleluia appears frequently in liturgical speech and song.

This year our liturgy on Sundays in this season will alter to allow for members of the congregation to present their ‘memorable hymns’. We will therefore just listen to the first reading (from the Acts of the Apostles) and the Gospel, although the Psalm and second reading are also printed below for you to read at home.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God, whose blessed Son before his passion prayed for his disciples that they might be one, as you and he are one: Grant that your Church, being bound together in love and obedience to you, may be united in one body by the one Spirit, that the world may believe in him whom you have sent, Your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING Acts 16: 16-34

A reading from the book of the Acts of the Apostles

One day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave-girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune-telling. While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, ‘These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation.’ She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ‘I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market-place before the authorities. When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, ‘These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe.’ The crowd joined in attacking them, and

Page 3: Seventh Sunday of Easter - CGCA

the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. After they had given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted in a loud voice, ‘Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.’ The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them outside and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They answered, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.’ They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptised without delay. He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Commentary: There are two miracles: the curing of a girl from possession by evil and the events after the “earthquake”. The girl’s cry reminds us of exorcisms Jesus did himself where evil spirits recognized God and spoke the truth. Paul continues what Jesus began; it is Jesus who cures (“in the name of Jesus ...”).The authorities and magistrates were seated in the marketplace to hear legal cases and the jail was nearby. The police carried a bundle of “rods” sometimes bound around an axe. “Stocks” were a form of torture, for they forced the legs apart. The “earthquake” is a manifestation of God’s presence: being beyond the natural, it is a miracle. A Roman jailer was likely to be put to death for letting a prisoner escape; this one chooses suicide. Instead of committing suicide, we hear of the jailer’s conversion. Instructed in the faith, he and his family are baptised, and share a meal, rejoicing.

PSALM 97 Response: Let all the world rejoice.

1. The Lord is king; let the earth rejoice: let the multitude of islands be glad. 2. Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. 3. Fire goes before him: and burns up his enemies on every side…………………....Response

4. His lightnings light the world: the earth sees it and quakes. 5. The mountains melt like wax before his face: from before the face of the Lord of all the earth. 6. The heavens have proclaimed his righteousness: and all peoples have seen his glory………………………..Response

7. They are ashamed, all those who serve idols and glory in mere nothings: all gods bow down before him. 8. Zion heard and was glad, and the daughters of Judah rejoiced: because of your judgements, O God.

9. For you, Lord, are most high over all the earth: you are exalted far above all gods…………………………...Response: Let all the world rejoice.

10. The Lord loves those that hate evil: the Lord guards the life of the faithful, and delivers them from the hand of the ungodly. 11. Light dawns for the righteous: and joy for the true of heart. 12. Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous: and give thanks to his holy name…………………………...Response

SECOND READING Revelation 22: 12-21

A reading from the book of the Revelation to John

I, John, heard a voice saying to me: “See, I am coming soon; my reward is with me, to repay according to everyone’s work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.’ Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and fornicators and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practises falsehood. ‘It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.’ The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let everyone who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift. I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book; if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. The one who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Commentary: This is the end of God’s revelation to John. Jesus (the Lamb) speaks: He will soon return, bringing reward and recompense for the faithful, to the extent they have acted for Christ. “Those who wash their robes” are those who, after enduring suffering (“the great ordeal”) are transformed – as was Jesus in his sacrificial death. Jesus identifies himself as born of David’s line, the “star [that] shall come out of Jacob [Israel]” (see Numbers 24:17). The “morning star” was a deity in ancient Near East and Greco-Roman religions. Jesus is therefore for all people. The bride is the Church; both the Spirit and the Church are integral with God, and both seek Jesus’ return.

GOSPEL John 17.20-26

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus prayed, “As you Father and I are one, may my disciples also be one so that the world may believe.” Alleluia!

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John, chapter 17, beginning at the 20th verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed: ‘Holy Father, I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Commentary: This chapter concludes a long discourse by Jesus (which began three chapters earlier!) It appropriately finishes with a prayer, in which Jesus commits himself to his passion and death. In John’s Gospel the suffering and death of Jesus is presented not so much as a time of great anguish and sorrow as the time when Jesus was glorified by God the Father. It is a time of great triumph in which Jesus is in complete control throughout. Jesus goes on to pray for his disciples, firstly for their safety: that is, protection both from danger and also from the risk of renouncing their faith and thereby forfeiting their new life. Secondly he prays that they may be one as we are one. This is a unity within the Christian community which is the outward expression of a deeper unity that all Christians have with God the Father through Jesus Christ.

Charity of the Month - CMS

Our charity of the month for June is CMS, The Church Missionary Society of Australia (https://www.cms.org.au). CMS Australia traces its roots back to England in 1799 when a small group of Anglicans, including John Newton and William Wilberforce, had a passion for worldwide gospel outreach. CMS Australia continues to work with churches to set apart, equip and support long-term workers who cross cultures to share the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, as well as supporting local churches in their participation in God’s local and global mission. Their fundraising campaign this year is “Lasting Hope”, supporting the missionaries sent by CMS as they bring the lasting hope of Jesus to people who have little hope of even knowing a Christian who can explain the gospel of Jesus to them. The Queensland and Northern New South Wales branch of CMS supports 13 missionaries including four based in Nepal, whom June and Timothy hope to visit later this year. These people work in their professions of medicine and education as well as encouraging and mentoring young leaders in the church. It is a challenging time for them with difficulties in obtaining work visas, as well as the criminalisation of religious conversion which is already being seen to restrict religious freedom.

At the last Parish Council meeting on 16 May the following items were discussed. For more information please ask one of our Parish Councillors.

• Building works: Concrete post under St Thomas’ to be repaired; Mooloolah Ramp progressing (final plans being drawn); upper grassed area at St Andrew’s now safe to enter thanks to work done by Ken Mewburn; St Andrew’s vestry roof needs new sheeting and quotations are being obtained.

• Requests for faculties (permission from the diocese for works) have been submitted for the installation of playground equipment at St Andrew’s and the installation of solar panels on the roof of the hall and church house at Caloundra.

• Finance: The Diocese has agreed to regard Rev’d Timothy as locum and so will reimburse his stipend from the Rector’s sickness insurance policy; a bequest has been received for Glasshouse Country which will cover the shortfall for the Mooloolah ramp project; offerings for April were $14,950 ($2,000 above budget); expenses were below budget (but overall for the month the deficit was $3,042, and year to date $15,852).

• The parish mission: Discussion was held about why we do what we do. What drives us? Suggestions for revamping our parish mission statement are sought.

Parish Pentecost Lunch

Thought for the day

Throughout the Easter season this year, members of the congregation have shared some of their memorable hymns with us. We sang some old hymns, some new hymns, even some Christmas carols! Hymn singing is an intrinsic part of our worship, and often the style of hymns is a matter of much debate in congregations. So why do we sing? Hymn singing has been part of our tradition from the time of Moses (see Exodus 15:1); David sang the ‘new song’ God gave him (Psalm 40:3); Jesus and his disciples sang after the last supper (Mark 14:26) as did the early church (1 Corinthians 14:26). The classic hymn writers such as Wesley,

Watts and Crosby, together with more modern composers such as Kendrick, Townend and Getty have given us music that helps us to focus our attention on theological truths in a more interactive way, allowing for an authentic response. Congregational singing unites us with each other and with our God. As David puts it in the psalm set for today: “Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous: and give thanks to his holy name” (Psalm 97:12). Rev’d Timothy

Rev’d Timothy is considering offering an 8 week Bible study group looking at this much misunderstood book. It is proposed to run this fortnightly starting in July on a Tuesday or Thursday evening or a Friday afternoon. If you would be interested in this, please contact Timothy. The study would be based on a book by Michael Wilcok, ‘The message of Revelation’, which will cost $15.
