Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord, Welcome!

I rejoice as you join the Sacred Heart worshiping community on this 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time. You enrich our Eucharistic Liturgy through your presence and

prayerful participation. As you listen to God’s Word, may you come to know the Lord. As you take and eat the Bread of Life, may your faith be nurtured. Thanks for joining us! In today’s First Reading from the Book of Kings, “a woman of influence” from Shunem witnesses to generous hospitality. Recognizing Elisha as “a holy man of God,” she offers Elisha a place to dine. Later, a little room is prepared for Elisha so he could stay overnight. Her hospitality affords her the opportunity to receive not only a prophet, but the prophetic word. Her hospitality has its rewards, as “this time next year” she will have a baby son. Our Second Reading, from Paul’s Letter to the Romans, is often read at a Funeral Liturgy. It speaks of Baptism as being “baptized into his death.” In Baptism, we are buried with Christ, “so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead… we too might live in newness of life.” I really like that phrase, “newness of life.” It’s something to look forward to!! In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of the priority of love that begins with Him. Loving the Lord leads us to be loving fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. Love involves losing one’s life through the sacrifices one makes for others. The dying that Paul speaks about and the “losing one’s life” call for lots of giving, even giving “a cup of cold water” to “little ones.”

Peace be with you! God bless,

Fr. McKee

P.S. I welcome Fr. Casimir Nyaki, who joins us for the annual Mission Co-Op this weekend. Check today’s bulletin for more information.

Happy Fourth of July!!
