Welcome to the Queenscliff Music Festival, one of Victoria’s favourite regional music and cultural celebrations and a major tourism drawcard.

Renowned as the rst major all-ages festival on the Australian summer music festival calendar, the

Queenscliff Music Festival has earned a reputation for showcasing high calibre international and Australian performers, as well as emerging artists.

Since 1997, this iconic family-friendly event has attracted thousands of visitors to the picturesque Bellarine Peninsula ahead of the traditional summer peak holiday period, delivering signi cant economic and social bene ts to Queenscliff and surrounding towns.

Evaluations have found that almost 40 per cent of visitors to the festival stay in and around Queenscliff for two nights driving increased trade for local accommodation, tourism and hospitality operators, as well as retailers.

The Victorian Government is proud to be supporting the 18th Queenscliff Music Festival as part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring regional Victoria shares the economic bene ts of our thriving tourism and events sector.

I wish you a highly enjoyable time at the festival and also encourage you to take time to experience Queenscliff’s and the Bellarine’s many other attractions.

The Hon. Louise Asher MPMinister for Tourism and Major Events

On behalf of the Borough of Queenscliffe it gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 Queenscliff Music Festival. This incredible musical event has grown to become an annual highlight of the region’s events calendar.

Now in its 18th year, the festival returns once again to

Princess Park overlooking picturesque Port Phillip Bay and festival-goers have the option of low-cost camping accommodation, enabling a bigger and more diverse audience to enjoy the festival.Queenscliff’s grand buildings and stunning coastal environment provide the perfect backdrop to this three-day celebration of contemporary Australian

and world music, and for the rst time a comedy line up.

I encourage you to take time out from the musical feast to taste the many other delights of the region including our great beaches, boutiques, galleries, cafes, hotels and harbour. I also encourage you to return over the summer to further enjoy the region’s attractions and hospitality.

Congratulations to the organisers of the Queenscliff Music Festival for a spectacular program in 2014. The festival certainly continues to get bigger and better than ever. Let the music begin!

From haunting acoustic ballads to big band rock’n’soul guaranteed to make you move, Dan Sultan delivers a dynamic live set. The two time ARIA award winning artist returned this year with his fourth album Blackbird. Recorded in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Modest Mouse, Kings Of Leon), it debuted at number 4 on the ARIA charts. It took out the coveted spot of triple j’s feature album and earned plenty of positive reviews. Earlier this year, Sultan supported Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, and then followed it up with a huge national tour this winter with sold-out shows around the country before heading off to perform in London, New York and Los Angeles. In 2010, along with the two ARIAs for Best Blues And Roots Album and Male Artist of the Year, Sultan also scooped up two Deadly Awards and two AIR Awards. Too few bands inspire listeners to dance from dusk until dawn, but The Jezabels, with their own brand of bold pop, have never had that problem. Their latest single Time to Dance from their latest album The Brink has been getting people up and moving across the globe in the past couple of months, from the muddy elds of Glastonbury Festival to London Calling Fest, T In The Park, to Montreaux Jazz Festival, Fire y Festival and New York’s legendary Bowery Ballroom and all points

in between. With all that constant movement, it’s only tting that the video was lmed in the city that never sleeps. Rich guitars, synth-hooks and thundering drums build the perfect back drop for Hayley Mary’s hypnotic voice.Saturday ‐ Lighthouse Stage ‐ 11:00pm ‐ 12:00am

HIATUS K AIYOTEEvery so often a band comes along that captures the collective imagination. A band that has all the essential elements in place to become a musical movement. The music of Hiatus Kaiyote strikes the perfect note, merging poetry and polyrhythms. On the band’s debut album Tawk Tomahawk, it’s as if the vast desert landscape has opened up, borrowing ingredients from far-reaching lands to concoct a distinctive avour that is the essence of all its parts. Each song whispers of delicious, ancient stories untold. Hiatus Kaiyote has a style that can’t be easily pinpointed. Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Tupac Shakur, Flying Lotus, traditional amenco and music from Mali and Colombia have in uenced the group. “You’re eradicating labels of barriers,” says Nai Palm. “The words are important, but the way they’re shaped makes them malleable for the listener to absorb. How you proceed involves a larger activity, and I love that.” Friday ‐ Lighthouse Stage ‐ 7:00 ‐ 8:00pm

The Church continue to rede ne what it is to be a band. Guiding the band though their career has been a combination of chemistry, talent and a desire for excellence. Their unique and distinctive guitar sounds paired with their thought-provoking lyrics have succeeded in inspiring both the audience and the critics’ imagination the world over. In recent years the band have continued on their creative trajectory, and with their induction into the 2010 ARIA Hall Of Fame, they have been

able to re ect on their huge body of work as they continue to be proli c and pursue their artistic aspirations both live and in the studio. Rolling Stone Australia gave their last album Untitled #23 an unprecedented 5 star review - “a stunningly ambitious album of shimmering rock”. A comment that underpins the band’s ability to continue to produce progressive and engaging music to this day.Saturday ‐ Lighthouse Stage ‐ 9:00 ‐ 10:15pm

Australian Funk/Soul/Hip Hop legends Skunkhour come to Queenscliff Music Festival to perform a special ‘classic album’ set. Playing their internationally lauded self-titled debut from 1993, song by song. Fused with sinuous grooves, magnetic rhythms, brass hooks, and compelling interwoven dual vocals, the debut album sold world-wide and introduced the band as a wholly original force on the Australian music landscape. Known for their energetic

sets as well as the depth and diversity of their music, the band reforms for Queenscliff Music Festival to bring a classic back to life. When he debuted in 2002 with the album To Let, Xavier Rudd began a journey that would see him become one of the most iconic voices in Australian music, literally and guratively. With each new album, this journey has wound like a river making its way toward the ocean - twisting and turning, owing and cascading as it relentlessly pushes forward. Introducing himself as an artist of both imagination and conscience, Xavier Rudd’s ability to marry uplifting melodies with thought-provoking themes and concepts produced music that, one way or another, made you feel good. With an array of guitars, yidakis (didgeridoos), stomp box and percussion, Rudd re-introduced a lot of Australians to the sounds and stories of the land’s original owners, while introducing the rest of the world to an entirely new sound altogether. THE WAIFSThe past three years of living life in different countries, hemispheres and timezones have seen touring take a backseat for The Waifs. Individually, Donna, Vikki and Josh have been busy traveling, relocating and nesting with family, however music has always remained an essential part of everyday life. The Waifs will be temporarily reunited on home soil this November. They’ll be performing favourite tracks spanning their 20 year career plus a few new songs thrown in for good measure. From a journey that began in 1992, with two sisters and a friend traveling in a van playing gigs for anyone and anywhere, to half a million record sales locally and multiple ARIA awards, The Waifs have plenty of tales to tell through their music. Áine Tyrrell’s songs smell of the saltiness of her home on the west coast of Ireland. She grew up sitting amongst Irish traditional music royalty, learning early the craft of storytelling through song from her father. Her travels have been as extensive as her in uences, and her infectious melodies have won her loyal fan bases in several pockets of the globe. She has quickly established herself an artist to watch in the Australian music scene with the amazing outcome of her recent crowd funding campaign which has brought support from all across the scene and world. It’s no wonder that the Queenscliff Music Festival has recently awarded her the Emerging Artist Grant with her live performances full of honesty and passion for her music.Saturday ‐ QMF Express (Carriage C) ‐ Departs 11am, 12mid, 1pmSaturday ‐ Stoked On Hesse ‐ 3:30 ‐ 4:15pmSunday ‐ Salt Lounge ‐ 1:30 ‐ 2:15pm

To group 21 year old Alister Turrill in with other young roots players would be a mistake. His playing style blends a true form of blues with complex song writing seldom seen in someone so young. Alister won the 2011 Melbourne Youth in Blues award, and as a result has been taking guidance from Australia’s most respected blues artists. He’s shared the stage with Jeff Lang, Geoff Achison and Lloyd Spiegel on several occasions and has supported the likes of Ash Grunwald, Tim Freedman, Shane Howard and Charlie Parr. It’s the raw, uninhibited honesty of his song writing, evident on his debut album Reverence & Resonance, that has seen him charm crowd after crowd at each of his performances. Archer is an old-time sing song man. Others note that he’s an ‘outsider’. He lives out there for sure, somewhere with no xed address, anywhere or nowhere. Archer is hard to pin down. Born in North Carolina, he’s found a roaming home in Australia. He plucks guitar, writes and plays country bush blues, and every new song from Archer sounds 100 years old. His music is stripped back and simple. His in uences skip back generations to the traditional country singers. Tex Morton, Smilin’ Billy Blinkhorn, guys like that. He learned to sing up North with the Paci c Islanders. He’s a musical drifter, picking up stories wherever he goes, polishing them into honest songs. There’s a sense with Archer that his music exists outside of time. Which makes sense, because he exists outside of place.Saturday ‐ Glaneuse Stage ‐ 12:00 ‐ 12:45pmSaturday ‐ Salt Lounge ‐ 3:15 ‐ 4:00pmSunday ‐ QMF Express (Carriage A) ‐ Departs 11am, 12pmSunday ‐ Stoked On Hesse ‐ 2:30 ‐ 3:15pmSunday ‐ Bowling Club ‐ 1:00 ‐ 1:45pm

Hurray For The Riff Raff is Alynda Lee Segarra, but in many ways it’s much more than that: it’s a young woman leaving her indelible stamp on the American folk tradition. If you’re listening to her new album, Small Town Heroes, odds are you’re part of the riff raff, and these songs are for you.Segarra came to international attention in 2012 with Look Out Mama. The album earned her raves from NPR and the New York Times to Mojo and Paste, along with a breakout performance at the 2013 Newport Folk Festival. Segarra, a 26-year-old of Puerto Rican descent whose slight frame belies her commanding voice, grew up in the Bronx, where she developed an early appreciation for doo-wop and Motown from the neighborhood’s longtime residents. Since then she’s gone on to earn her place at the forefront of a new generation of young musicians celebrating and reimagining American roots musicSunday ‐ Hippos Stage ‐ 2:00 ‐ 3:00pm

Hailing from Wisconsin USA, Hayward Williams returns to Australia in support of his fth studio album, The Reef. The 10-track LP traces Williams’ journey back to creativity and performance following a medical diagnosis of exhaustion and a period of self-doubt, and it showcases both his Americana roots and his rich, soulful voice. Williams will be joined at Queenscliff by South Australian duo The Yearlings (Robyn Chalklen and Chris Parkinson) and their band, with Chalklen’s sublime vocals and Parkinson’s moody and masterful lead guitar offering the perfect setting for Williams’ rambunctious and engaging style.Saturday ‐ Glaneuse Stage ‐ 2:45 ‐ 3:45pmSaturday ‐ Bowling Club ‐ 7:00 ‐ 7:45pmSunday ‐ Vue Grand ‐ 3:15 ‐ 4:00pm

FOOT-in-the-DOOR is a vibrant youth program that is supported by FReeZA and runs for the duration of the Queenscliff Music Festival.

Its purpose is to help emerging young artists showcase their talents, and as the name suggests get a ‘foot-in-the-door’ in the music industry. It gives young artists the chance to perform live in front of an audience at a nationally acclaimed music festival, which is a very valuable and rewarding experience for those selected artists.

There are three sections of the FOOT-in-the-DOOR competition: Pop/Acoustic, Blues Roots & Beyond, and Rock. Five bands/artists will play in each section battling it out in front of a panel of industry judges and spectators for a cash prize.

The 2014 FITD competition featured some up-and-coming stars. We received a record number of applications last year, and the competition for a spot was stronger than ever.

Check Blackboard outside the Pavilion for FITD playing times

“You’d be crazy not to drop in for a few of these acts, as very shortly some of these artists will be selling out venues, and lling our Mainstage”. Andrew Orvis, Festival Director

In a world where instant grati cation is the norm, patience has become a rare commodity. But for Zoë Randell and Steve Hassett, who make up indie-folk duo Luluc, letting things unfold in due time not only de nes their career trajectory, it also works as a pretty good description of their approach to making music. Music that Sub Pop co-founder Jonathan Poneman describes as “bracing, subtle, tender and magni cent”. So while it may seem like Randell and Hassett’s history is littered with all kinds of good luck - from their initial meeting, to their relationship with The National’s Aaron Dessner, to their deal with Sub Pop, to grabbing the attention of Nick Drake’s producer - being in the right place at the right time isn’t just about fate, it’s about knowing when something feels right and having the con dence that people will respond when they’re ready.Saturday ‐ Vue Grand ‐ 3:00 ‐ 4:00pm

A relentless work ethic has seen Melbourne born and raised singer-songwriter Matt Katsis take on the Australian market with an ease and quality that parallels his music. Fusing folk, blues and reggae in uences, Katsis’ solo performances bestow his raw vocals. Chic 6 & 12 string acoustic guitars paired with an array of effect pedals and a thumping stomp box, these are all used to create his rich and lively sound, which has been heard on numerous Australian stages, iconic venues and festival line-ups. Nahko, an Oregon native born a mix of Apache, Puerto Rican, and Filipino and adopted into an American family, suffered an identity crisis from an early age. When he took up the piano at age six, the unifying power of music entered his life and brought him harmony. Armed with his new found talent, he set out to bridge the cultural gaps dividing his own psyche. He began producing a public, musical journal of his journey toward personal, spiritual, and communal healing, and thus Medicine for the People was born. Recently, Nahko discussed his successes, his philosophies, his music, and his life with Huf ngton Post, who called Nahko’s music “beautiful and stirring,” comparing him to Bob Marley and proclaiming him a “musical prophet.” Sincerity and earnestness are rare qualities in contemporary music, but they’re qualities possessed by Nahko. Trevor Hall realized at a very young age that music was more than just a passion. As an eleven year old playing harmonica beside his father in the cradle of the weeping willows of South Carolina, music quickly became his most intimate companion, guide and creative outlet. In his elementary years, he began to write his own songs and perform them locally. At sixteen he recorded his rst record, and the following year he left South Carolina to study classical guitar at Idyllwild Arts Academy, an international boarding school east of Los Angeles. In 2013 at the age of 26, after touring consistently for ten years, Trevor decided to take a break from the stage and go on an extended pilgrimage to India. There he spent many weeks studying under a classical Baul musician born and trained in the villages of Bengal. Trevor’s most recent album, Chapter of the Forest, was released in June 2014 and debuted at #2 on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart and #17 on the iTunes overall albums chart.Sunday ‐ Lighthouse Stage ‐ 11:45am ‐ 12:40pm

Welcome to our Eighteenth edition of the Queenscliff Music Festival. As always, we are proud to be bringing you the best contemporary Australian music from across the country, across genres and across generations. Some favourites are back; Xavier Rudd, The Waifs, The Church and Dan Sultan, and an incredible line-up of QMF rst timers including; The Jezabels, Skunkhour, Perfect Tripod, Husky, The Bombay Royale and many more!

We also welcome back the addition of International Artists to the 2014 program including Nahko, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Kristy Lee, Trevor Hall, Tim Chaison, and Hayward Williams. A big pat on the Chaison, and Hayward Williams. A big pat on the back to Andrew for another stellar programming achievement, and the struggle to decide which artists we must see and which ones we would like to but may not get to.... They will all have CD’s for sale so buy them and take your Festival experience home with you.

A little re ection is called for this year on how far we have come. From our rst Festival 18 years ago orchestrated by a handful of local, community minded music lovers and attended by a few hundred people, to a Victorian Hallmark Tourism Event attended by 8,000+ people and still growing. As a not-for-proft organisation we aim to manage our growth in a sustainable way to ensure we don’t lose our long term supporters and festival goers, continue our commitment to our community groups, and make our Festival more attractive to campers and younger audiences.

Volunteers play an integral role in making QMF a success each year. This year we will again be recognising more volunteers who have given us 15 years service. We are grateful for the efforts and energy put in to the Festival by all our regular volunteers and I look forward to raising a glass with you this weekend and celebrating your contribution. Our long term volunteers are the backbone of our event and they are the ones who inspire us to continue our own volunteering efforts. Each year of course we also have a band of new volunteers who step up to help us out.

I would like to acknowledge the contribution which Lisa Meyers has made to the Festival. Lisa stepped down this year after 7 years as chair of

the QMF Board. Her leadership and contribution over that time has been outstanding. Thanks Lisa! Fortunately for us, Lisa has stayed on as a member of the Board for this year.

Our partners and sponsors also deserve recognition for their long term commitment to our Festival. We are particularly grateful to our major partners, the Borough of Queenscliffe, Tourism Victoria, FReeZA, and Searoad Ferries for again partnering with us and supporting our role in promoting high quality live music in one of the most beautiful places in Australia.

Congratulations to the 2014 QMF Emerging Artist Grant recipients: Aine Tyrrell and Sagamore. We thank all our ‘Friends of the Festival’ for supporting our efforts with this program. We wish both acts all the best with their careers. If you too want to help support the careers of aspiring professional musicians consider becoming a Friend of the Festival. Details are on our website. Your membership goes directly into the QMF Grant and is distributed to the grant winners each year by the QMF Board.

I know we will all have a fantastic weekend thanks to the hard yards put in by our staff, Board members, and key volunteers throughout the year and during this weekend. The festival weekend is a great opportunity to showcase our town and for the local community to welcome the many visitors who will join us. See you there!
