Welcome to the Queenscliff Music Festival, one of Victoria’s favourite regional music and cultural celebrations and a major tourism drawcard.

Renowned as the � rst major all-ages festival on the Australian summer music festival calendar, the

Queenscliff Music Festival has earned a reputation for showcasing high calibre international and Australian performers, as well as emerging artists.

Since 1997, this iconic family-friendly event has attracted thousands of visitors to the picturesque Bellarine Peninsula ahead of the traditional summer peak holiday period, delivering signi� cant economic and social bene� ts to Queenscliff and surrounding towns.

Evaluations have found that almost 40 per cent of visitors to the festival stay in and around Queenscliff for two nights driving increased trade for local accommodation, tourism and hospitality operators, as well as retailers.

The Victorian Government is proud to be supporting the 18th Queenscliff Music Festival as part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring regional Victoria shares the economic bene� ts of our thriving tourism and events sector.

I encourage you to take time out from the musical feast to taste the many other delights of the region including our great beaches, boutiques, galleries, cafes, hotels and harbour. I also encourage you to return over the summer to further enjoy the region’s attractions and hospitality.

HIATUS K AIYOTEEvery so often a band comes along that captures the collective imagination. A band that has all the essential elements in place to become a musical movement. The music of Hiatus Kaiyote strikes the perfect note, merging poetry and polyrhythms. On the band’s debut album Tawk Tomahawk, it’s as if the vast desert landscape has opened up, borrowing ingredients from far-reaching lands to concoct a distinctive � avour that is the essence of all its parts. Each song whispers of delicious, ancient stories untold. Hiatus Kaiyote has a style that can’t be easily pinpointed. Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Tupac Shakur, Flying Lotus, traditional � amenco and music from Mali and Colombia have in� uenced the group. “You’re eradicating labels of barriers,” says Nai Palm. “The words are important, but the way they’re shaped makes them malleable for the listener to absorb. FOOT-in-the-DOOR is a vibrant youth program that is supported by FReeZA and runs for the duration of the Queenscliff Music Festival.

Its purpose is to help emerging young artists showcase their talents, and as the name suggests get a ‘foot-in-the-door’ in the music industry. It gives young artists the chance to perform live in front of an audience at a nationally acclaimed music festival, which is a very valuable and rewarding experience for those selected artists.

There are three sections of the FOOT-in-the-DOOR competition: Pop/Acoustic, Blues Roots & Beyond, and Rock. Five bands/artists will play in each section battling it out in front of a panel of industry judges and spectators for a cash prize.

The 2014 FITD competition featured some up-and-coming stars. We received a record number of applications last year, and the competition for a spot was stronger than ever.

Adelaide rapper Tkay Maidza launched onto Australia’s hip-hop scene only six months ago, and she is already making waves around the nation. After impressing audiences on her debut run of East Coast shows and festival appearances. Brontosaurus was released late last year, and after enjoying airplay around the nation fans rushed to purchase the track forcing an impressive ARIA singles chart debut of #89. Shortly after, Maidza was also included in triple j’s annual Next Crop list alongside the likes of breaking artists Dustin Tebbutt and The Kite String Tangle and as ‘One To Watch’ in News Ltd’s annual predictions. Tijuana Cartel introduce a somewhat intelligent and original sound to the ear, bringing Flamenco guitar, slide guitar, emcees, percussion and scratch DJ’s to the live forum. Their list of nationwide shows and residencies proves just how well their beguiling sounds cross boundaries. ‘Life is a journey, not a destination’. So said sage American writer Ralph Waldo Emerson. For evidence of that old chestnut’s enduring truth just look at Tim Chaisson’s passage between his last record, 2012’s award-winning album, The Other Side, and his forthcoming release, scheduled for the fall of 2014 produced by Bill Reynolds (Band Of Horses). As journeys go, the roots-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s trail through 2013-2014 was a blaze of highpoints, including (but not limited to) an East Coast Music Award for best Roots/Traditional Solo Recording of the year, a � nalist spot in the Canadian Country Music Association’s Discovery Program, and a nomination for Singer/Songwriter Discovery of the Year Award presented by satellite radio SiriusXM’s lauded Coffee House channel. The choir generates a collage of voices, as individuals of varying ability � nd a niche where they can sing their heart out. New gen Indigenous Australian artists Yirrmal and the Yolngu Boys, from North-East Arnhem Land, are making a refreshing entrance into the music scene. Yirrmal Marika, who fronts the group, is an aspiring songwriter and guitarist with a beautiful voice; singing songs about his homeland and culture with feeling and depth beyond his years. The Yolngu Boys - Dion and Jerol Wunungmurra, Mabo Mununggurritj and Raven Marika have extensive knowledge of ceremonial Manikay songs, and are excellent Manikay songs, and are excellent Manikaysingers, dancers and didgeridoo players. Trevor Hall realized at a very young age that music was more than just a passion. As an eleven year old playing harmonica beside his father in the cradle of the weeping willows of South Carolina, music quickly became his most intimate companion, guide and creative outlet. In his elementary years, he began to write his own songs and perform them locally. At sixteen he recorded his � rst record, and the following year he left South Carolina to study classical guitar at Idyllwild Arts Academy, an international boarding school east of Los Angeles. In 2013 at the age of 26, after touring consistently for ten years, Trevor decided to take a break from the stage and go on an extended pilgrimage to India. There he spent many weeks studying under a classical Baul musician born and trained in the villages of Bengal. Trevor’s most recent album, Chapter of the Forest, was released in June 2014 and debuted at #2 on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart and #17 on the iTunes overall albums chart.Sunday ‐ Lighthouse Stage ‐ 11:45am ‐ 12:40pm

The EP is an introduction to a world of future soul, characterised by honesty in melody and lyric. Produced by Alex Laska (KINGSWOOD), the EP combines her natural inclination for songwriting and a voice that pays tribute to the greats of the past and present from Etta James to Alicia Keys, from Billie Holiday to Frank Ocean. Welcome to our Eighteenth edition of the Queenscliff Music Festival. As always, we are proud to be bringing you the best contemporary Australian music from across the country, across genres and across generations. Some favourites are back; Xavier Rudd, The Waifs, The Church and Dan Sultan, and an incredible line-up of QMF � rst timers including; The Jezabels, Skunkhour, Perfect Tripod, Husky, The Bombay Royale and many more!

We also welcome back the addition of International Artists to the 2014 program including Nahko, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Kristy Lee, Trevor Hall, Tim Chaison, and Hayward Williams. A big pat on the Chaison, and Hayward Williams. A big pat on the back to Andrew for another stellar programming achievement, and the struggle to decide which artists we must see and which ones we would like to but may not get to.... They will all have CD’s for sale so buy them and take your Festival experience home with you.

A little re� ection is called for this year on how far we have come. From our � rst Festival 18 years ago orchestrated by a handful of local, community minded music lovers and attended by a few hundred people, to a Victorian Hallmark Tourism Event attended by 8,000+ people and still growing. As a not-for-proft organisation we aim to manage our growth in a sustainable way to ensure we don’t lose our long term supporters and festival goers, continue our commitment to our community groups, and make our Festival more attractive to campers and younger audiences.

Volunteers play an integral role in making QMF a success each year. This year we will again be recognising more volunteers who have given us 15 years service. We are grateful for the efforts and energy put in to the Festival by all our regular volunteers and I look forward to raising a glass with you this weekend and celebrating your contribution. Our long term volunteers are the backbone of our event and they are the ones who inspire us to continue our own volunteering efforts. Each year of course we also have a band of new volunteers who step up to help us out.

I would like to acknowledge the contribution which Lisa Meyers has made to the Festival. Lisa stepped down this year after 7 years as chair of

the QMF Board. Her leadership and contribution over that time has been outstanding. Thanks Lisa! Fortunately for us, Lisa has stayed on as a member of the Board for this year.

GET TING AROUNDBuses - Timetable and tickets online via qmf.net.au. All buses are operated by McHarrys Bus Services. Bus stop is located on Wharf Street across from the entrance to the Festival. Look for the Bus Signs. Schedules available from the Box Of� ce and at the Bus Stop.

Access - Drop-off point and limited Disability Parking Permit Only is located on Symonds Street between Gellibrand Street and Wharf Street. With the exception of Salt, all venues are wheelchair friendly, although access to the Vue Grand is via an external walkway left to the main entrance. The Lighthouse & Hippos stages have a viewing platform. Look for the Access signs at each venue. Full QMF Access Plan at www.qmf.net.au

Parking - All local parking restrictions and local by-laws will apply during the Festival.

Street closures - will take place over the weekend – from Friday 9am until Monday 9am – refer to Festival Map.

Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry - These leave on the hour, every hour, 7am-6pm every day.

MARKETSQueenscliffe Community Markets - Saturday and Sunday 9am-4pm, near the train station.

QMF - Select market stalls also within the Festival site.

FAMILIESParents’ facilities - Inside the Kids Quarter.  A change table is available.  It will operate all week-end. Toilet facilities inside Kids Quarter area. A family toilet is also located inside The Pavilion. 

Lost Children / Parents - Head to the First Aid Shed for lost people. If unattended children in the Kids Quarter become in need of adult supervision, they will be treated as lost and escorted to the First Aid Shed. Police will be called if children are lost for an extended period. Please report lost people to the Box Of� ce, Security Of� cer, Venue Warden.

HEALTHNon-Smoking Venues - Smoking is only permitted in designated Smoking Areas - look for the signs. Smoking is not allowed in any indoor venues, INCLUDING LIGHTHOUSE & HIPPOS TENTS, all Bars, Pavillion and Kids Quarter Dry Zones.

Sunscreen - Available free from the First Aid Shed and from the Box Of� ce.

Water � lling stations - Located throughout the festival. Look for the signs and Barwon Water Station near the Lighthouse Stage.

SAFET YAlcohol - It is illegal to drink in public areas. Law enforcement authorities will issue immediate on-the-spot � nes for consuming alcohol in public places. Within the Festival precinct, No Alcohol is to be consumed or taken into the Pavillion and Kids Quarter Dry Zones) OR taken out/into the Festival – bags will be checked at the Festival entry/exit points.

Community Respect & Noise - Please respect our Neighbours when leaving the Festival precinct.

Chairs - No chairs in venues after 7pm. Small beach chairs only before 7p m, subject to venue capacity. Be prepared to stand or have people stand in front of you if venue is full.

Emergency Procedures - In an emergency, look for the nearest Area and Venue Warden wearing yellow & red hard-hats respectively and a hi-vis vest. Please listen to stage announcements for directions to the three designated Assembly Areas in case of evacuation.

First Aid - Operated by St John Ambulance & located in the Shed between the Lighthouse and Glaneuse Stage. Look for the First Aid signs/refer to the map/mobile app. Open during Festival hours.

Lost Property - If you’ve found, or lost, personal items report to the Box Of� ce.
