4 A message from our Patron

It is a privilege, as patron, to be able to write this foreword for the inaugural Swansea International Jazz Festival.

My first forays into the music profession were in jazz, a genre that is very close to my heart.

Dave Cottle, with sterling support from Berry Ray, have worked tirelessly in bringing off this major coup in Swansea, in what we hope will be the first of many such annual events. Swansea Jazzland, run by Dave with Berry’s help, has long been the favoured jazz venue for UK musicians, so it is fitting that their efforts have now metamorphosed into a festival of this great musical art.

A special thank you is due to the Arts Council of Wales, Swansea City Council and local business sponsors Prescott Jones Insurance and DJM Solicitors for their financial assistance.

Their support has meant that many performances and workshops included in the Festival’s 50 events are free to attend.

Dr. Karl Jenkins CBE B.Mus FRAM LRAM

In launching the first Swansea International Jazz Festival we are proud to present 50 musical events in venues within the beautiful Swansea Maritime Quarter. We hope you enjoy the variety and diversity of the jazz throughout the weekend and take away the experience of some memorable performances.

Thanks to the financial support from our sponsors & partners we have been able to produce a programme featuring world class jazz performers, whilst offering opportunities to our local based bands and musicians to perform at the festival.

It is anticipated that the festival will continue on an annual basis and become a part of the City of Swansea’s musical culture.

I look forward to seeing you during the Festival weekend, and at Swansea Jazzland where we continue to present the best of international & UK based jazz musicians on a weekly basis.

Friday20th June

ALAN BARNES / BRUCE ADAMS QUINTETThe Ocean Room National Waterfront Museum7pm

Ever-popular Alan Barnes opens the festival with the straight-ahead hard bop quintet he’s been leading with Bruce Adams for 20 years!

A repertoire from the classic years of bop with an emphasis on accessibility, good humour and a conviction that jazz should swing. Barnes has dominated the saxophone and clarinet section of the British jazz awards throughout the ‘90s and beyond and is often to be seen compering as well as performing at major jazz festivals.

Bruce Adams (Trumpet and Flugelhorn): Not only is Bruce one the jazz scene’s most dramatic and stimulating performers, he is also a tremendously affable companion. A band-room with the Glaswegian Mr. Adams present is a happy and riotous place.

Bruce cut his musical teeth on solid commercial work – on cruise liners, in dance halls, music halls, and even worked in support of comedy legends like, Tony Hancock and Freddie Starr. He has been a regular jazz poll-winner and with his spectacular range and power on the instrument has been in demand as a lead, and jazz trumpet man.

Bruce has often worked as a special guest soloist with both the Scottish Radio Orchestra and the BBC Big Band.

UK 1980s big band. He was a key member of the headlining Bheki Mseleku Band, featuring drummer Marvin ‘Smitty’ Smith. He also featured as a soloist and composer in Django Bates’ Delightful Precipice.

He leads his own bands “Eddie Parker Quartet” featuring the amazing Kit Downes on piano;

The Eddie Parker Group has also recorded two albums “Transformations of the Lamp” and “Everything you do to me” on FMR.

Currently Eddie is working as keyboard player and composer with Will Gregory Moog Ensemble, as well as on various recording, performance, composition and educational projects.

Eddie’s Quartet features includes Matt Robinson, piano and James Maddren on drums.

WORKSHOPS

Saxophonist Alan Barnes & trumpeter Bruce Adams are running a jazz workshops on Saturday 21st June at 10:30am.

Dylan Thomas Centre9:30pm

By the late 1970s, trailblazing keyboardist/composer/producer Jeff Lorber had become a prominent figure in the new movement known as jazz-fusion – a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. Lorber and his band, the Jeff Lorber Fusion, first honed their craft in the Portland, Oregon club scene and rapidly expanded their reach to a national and international audience via a combination of complex harmonies, unconventional time signatures and compelling rhythms. In subsequent years, Lorber dropped the term “fusion” from his billing as the movement evolved into what is currently known as contemporary jazz. Still, he continued to explore the innovative, improvisational potential of grafting other musical forms to the jazz idiom.

More than three decades after his earliest recordings, Lorber has come full circle. His new recording, Hacienda, released August 2013, revisits a sound he helped pioneer. Co-produced by Lorber and bassist/composer Jimmy Haslip, Hacienda also features saxophonist Eric Marienthal, a longtime collaborator with Lorber and his collective. Other guests include premier jazz-rock violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl, and an impressive cadre of other stellar players.

Lorber’s music reaches a new level by crystallizing jazz, funk, and Latin rhythms with some killer melodies that will certainly translate to live performance. Obviously, time spent touring together has made Lorber, Haslip and Marienthal into a tight unit, which is evident from this latest recording.

Matthew Ford is widely regarded as the finest big band singer in the UK, performing for 5 years with the multi-award winning Syd Lawrence Orchestra. In 2006 Matthew was voted ‘Best UK Male Big Band Vocalist’ and nominated alongside Jamie Cullum in the inaugural Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards (Best UK Male Vocalist category). As a soloist Matthew makes regular appearances with the RTE and BBC Concert

Orchestras, and has also worked with the Northern Sinfonia, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Halle and Philharmonia Orchestras. As a big band vocalist Matthew is always in demand, working with the BBC Big Band, Grammy nominated John Wilson Orchestra and many others including the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra. Matthew has been invited to perform for both domestic and international royalty, as well as for celebrity weddings and parties.

In 2009 Matthew broadcast with the BBC Big Band for the 30th Anniversary of BBC Radio 2’s ‘Big Band Special’ programme. His appearances with the RTE Concert Orchestra are regularly broadcast on RTE 1 and Lyric FM throughout Eire, whilst his album recordings have aired across the UK on Radio 2.

MIDLAND YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA

The Dylan Thomas Centre12:15pm

The Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra is now widely acclaimed as one of the U.K’s top big bands. Its reputation has been founded on a consistently high quality of performance over two decades. In addition, audiences find they are infected by the enjoyment, which band members bring to performances, and the excitement, which the band generates. These qualities have helped bring the band success in the BBC National Big Band Competition along with being a winner in the Dutch National Big Band Competition, beating adult bands from The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. MYJO has toured extensively, performing at the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, visiting

TV chat show host, Michael Parkinson. Many players from MYJO have entered the music profession, and some are becoming well known in their own right. Among these is the now internationally famous trombonist, Mark Nightingale. Several former members of MYJO play regularly for top bands like the BBC Radio Big Band, SLO, Robbie Williams Big Band.

The repertoire of the orchestra is intentionally very broad, and covers virtually the whole period of big band music.

the USSR and appearing on national TV and performing in Moscow and Odessa. It has also performed in the USA including Disneyworld as well as across Europe.

Among the other famous venues in which the band has performed are Ronnie Scott’s Club in London, the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican, and the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. MYJO has featured in concert with many famous names from the musical world, including Benny Carter, John Dankworth, Bobby Shew, Arturo Sandoval, Bob Florence, Stan Tracey, Jools Holland, and

Bruce has often worked as a special guest soloist with both the Scottish Radio Orchestra and the BBC Big Band. Bruce’s long-running musical partnership with saxophonist Alan Barnes has produced many plaudits and acclaimed recordings. Open to all ages, bring your own instruments. Approx 90 minutes. Booking via email to [email protected].

16Saturday21st June

He has a sophisticated command of harmonic improvising, although, as with his self-confessed (and disparate) trumpet heroes - Chet Baker, Art Farmer and Don Cherry - his playing comes across as anything but contrived.

Dick had a lengthy association with Ronnie Scott which lasted from the 1970s until Scott’s health forced him to abandon performing in the mid-1990s, and some of his best recorded work can be found on the CD Never Pat A Burning Dog (Jazz House, 1990), where his solos contrast admirably with Scott’s more forthright contributions, and contain a heat and urgency never far beneath the cool surface.

DICK PEARCE QUARTET

The Ocean Room National Waterfront Museum2pm

More than any other British jazz trumpeter, Pearce probably deserves the mantle of heir to Jimmy Deuchar, offering a style that contains a fractured lyricism reminiscent of his forebear. Pearce began his career as a military band musician and subsequently emerged in the 1970s from one of the earliest editions of that ongoing jazz dynasty, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO). Pearce was notable for being the kind of straight ahead player who might well have appeared on the London jazz scene twenty years earlier.

REMI HARRIS TRIO

Dylan Thomas Theatre12:30pm

Remi Harris is an exciting young guitarist and composer. He is widely regarded as one of the UK’s Top Gypsy Jazz Guitarists and has performed at Buckingham Palace and Live on BBC Radio 2.

The Remi Harris Trio are an Exciting Young Contemporary Gypsy Jazz Group featuring the Guitar of Remi Harris. They take Traditional Gypsy Jazz and Swing Characteristics and Infuse them with influences from Bebop, Blues, Rock, World Music, Contemporary Jazz and Popular Melodies for performances that Mesmerize and Inspire every time.

“Probably Britain’s greatest jazz guitarist to emerge since Martin Taylor… a recorded debut which places Remi Harris securely in the front line of the world’s finest jazz guitarists” Digby Fairweather.

SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN

The Music of Victor Feldman

Dylan Thomas Centre3:30pm

Mornington Lockett : SaxSteve Melling: PianoJim Hart : VibesMartin Shaw: TrumpetClarke Tracey : DrumsPaul Morgan : Bass

A revered UK export to the USA way back in the 50s, Victor Feldman made a telling contribution to jazz history with Miles Davis, composing the classic Seven Steps to Heaven, as well as playing with the likes of Cannonball Adderley and Woody Herman. Paying tribute to a brilliant pianist, percussionist and composer are an ‘A’ list of British jazz musicians.

TIPITINADylan Thomas Theatre3:45pm

“Debbie Jones sings superbly on this sizzling collection of blues-tinged songs. A tipped jazz outfit, Jools Holland will love them” [What’s On]. “Debbie Jones is as sultry as a night downtown, Justin boogies like there’s no tomorrow.

An album with its heart and soul deep in New Orleans. Glorious” [The Mail] “Instantly recognisable, Tipitina are really

on to something” [Paul, Jones, BBC Radio 2]. “New Orleans music is like an underground stream that rises to the surface every now and then. It happened for Fats Domino

in the 50s, Dr John in the 70s, The Neville Brothers and The Meters in the 70s and 80s and for our own Jools Holland. I bet that Tipitina will be the next”. [The Guardian]. “A remarkable CD which conveys the steam-heat of a New Orleans night, a Bourbon Street bar.

CONCERT TICKETSTickets for all performances are available to purchase online at www.sijf.co.uk 24/7, and throughout the festival weekend - however, tickets purchased after Friday June 13th 2014 will not be posted out - tickets purchased after this date will be available for collection at the SIJF Ticket desk at The Dylan Thomas Centre.

Recently Nigel has performed on ‘The Voice’ with the winner Leanne Mitchell’, toured with George Michael, recorded and gigged with Mark Knopfler, and recorded a classical alto sax concerto for Brian Byrne’s ‘Tales From The Walled City’.

PETE ALLEN JAZZ BANDThe Dylan Thomas Theatre 7pm

Pete Allen first formed his band in October 1978, and during the early years made thirty appearances for “Pebble Mill At One” - BBC Television.

Pete’s band plays an exciting and entertaining musical selection of happy traditional jazz. It’s a sound that everyone can enjoy and understand being a combination of well-played music with professional presentation perfect for any kind of event. The Pete Allen Jazz Band provides a slick and fast moving programme for the theatre or festival audience.

9:00pmMarcus Malone has been delighting British audiences for many years with his magnificent velvet toned vocals and his magnetic stage presence. Furthermore, he is a highly talented songwriter, who consistently surrounds himself with top class musicians.

In 1975 he met sax player Dick Morrissey and began a 15-year association, which produced 7 albums and became one of Britain’s top club bands. After the demise of Morrissey Mullen he worked with jazz vocalist Claire Martin (3 albums) and formed a series of quartets (3 albums). As a sideman he is in demand by visiting U.S. stars like Gene Harris, Mose Allison, Jimmy Smith, Weldon Irvine, Percy Sledge, Teddy Edwards, Plas Johnson, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Terry Callier.

Jim Mullen : Guitar Mike Gorman : Organ Matt Skelton : DrumsBorn in Glasgow, Scotland on November 26, 1945, Jim Mullen began his musical life aged 8 playing “Tea-chest bass” in the neighbour hood skiffle group. He got his first guitar the same year, and when an older friend introduced him to jazz, he was hooked.

After leaving school he trained as a journalist while playing on the local music scene. He formed a group with Malcolm Duncan and Roger Ball (later of the Average White Band) and they worked throughout Scotland playing Coltrane tunes and originals. It was in this group that he started attracting attention and in 1969 he moved to London, going on to work in the groups of Pete Brown, Brian Auger, Vinegar Joe and Kokomo.

CLAIREMARTIN & HER BANDThe Dylan Thomas Centre12:30pm

Claire Martin : Vocals Gareth Williams : Piano Laurence Cottle : Bass Matt Skelton : Drums

Growing up in a house full of music Claire Martin was born to sing. She loved Judy Garland but it was hearing Ella Fitzgerald’s legendary Song Books that changed her life inspiring her to go to Stage School and then to study singing in London and New York. When she saw the great improvising singer Betty Carter at Ronnie Scott’s. It confirmed what she already felt – she had to be a jazz singer. Claire formed her first quartet with guitar legend Jim Mullen and her break came when renowned Scottish jazz label Linn signed her in 1991, the start of a creative relationship that is still going strong today.

By the mid-nineties Claire had received the Rising Star and Best Vocalist awards at the British Jazz Awards while receiving rave reviews on her American debut with four sell-out shows in Washington DC. Increasingly popular in the USA, Claire recorded her fifth album Make This City Ours in New York. It reached number

1 in the prestigious Gavin Charts and staying there for two weeks, the only European singer to achieve this. 2007 also saw her make her debut at the world famous Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel in New York. Her two-week run was a huge success; with Tony Bennett dropping into hear his favourite British singer!

The Sarah Smith Quartet plays gypsy jazz with authentic passion, fire and virtuosity. This band is keeping the spirit of the music of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli alive.

As well as making many television and radio appearances, Violinist Sarah has been a session musician for the BBC. She has toured Europe extensively, as well as Canada. Sarah was awarded “Best Young Performer” by N/C Magazine. As a member of Inspector Gadjo, she won first place at an International Gypsy Jazz Festival in 2009. Sarah has performed with some of the world’s top Gypsy and Swing jazz musicians, including Gary Potter, Frank Vignola, and Martin Limberger.

The Quartet includes British jazz royalty; pianist John Critchinson was a member of Ronnie Scott’s band for eighteen years, whilst bassist Alec Dankworth and drummer Clark Tracey are the heirs to two of the most respected musical dynasties in the UK. The quartet’s music is fimly rooted in the classic sound of British jazz in the 1950’s and 60’s.

STEVE WHITE’s TRIO VALORE

The Ocean Room, National Waterfront Museum5:30pm

Formed originally from Paul Weller’s formidable live band of the mid 2000s the Trio’s original line up featured Steve White on drums (The Style Council, Paul Weller, Oasis, Dr John, The Who) and original Ocean Colour Scene founder Damon Minchella on bass with Seamus Beaghan on Hammond organ. After releasing a widely acclaimed album in 2008, the Trio toured the UK and Europe playing festivals and live shows extensively through 2009. Since the debut Italian shows the band have gone from strength to strength with a diary of live shows that stretches into 2014. Trio Valore features some of the best musicians this country has to offer, with drummer Steve White voted by readers of Rhythm magazine in their top poll of all time drummers and with Damon Minchella in partnership have played in some of the most influential bands and recordings of the last 20 years.

Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music – but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group.

Because of the nature of their music, their fan base is one that is far reaching while always retaining an ‘underground element’. This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying both high ‘cult’ status and instant recognition as a household name.

After a number of successful top-twenty singles in the UK, the band went on to score unprecedented international success with the release of the classic ‘Nightbirds’ recording and the title track has now become a standard in the popular music repertoire. This success was repeated with the top-ten hit “Down on the Street” and the award-winning video established the band’s personnel of Jill Saward (lead vocs), Bill Sharpe (keys), Keith Winter (gtr), George Anderson (bass) and Roger Odell (drums). With the magic Al Jarreau/Shakatak combination, the group went on to record the track ‘Day by Day’ to further international acclaim.

Along with this successful recording career, Shakatak had firmly established themselves as a vibrant live act, combining astute musicianship with a sense of fun that communicated strongly with world-wide audiences. Their performance in Japan’s Budoken Hall won them a Silver Award at the Tokyo International Song Festival-other awards include the ‘Best Instrumental Album’ for 6 consecutive years-and other live concerts of note have been the East meets the West Border Concert at the time of German re-unificationin 1989 and the open air concert in Cape Town for the Millennium Celebrations 2000 where they played in front of 250,000 people.

The long run of continuous success was brought to a halt when guitarist Keith Winter became seriously ill and was forced to stop playing. It took Keith a long while to redirect his energies but he is now a very successful website designer and remains very much a part of the Shakatak team by designing and maintaining the www.shakatak.com website. Eventually the band re-organised and the remaining four members now augment their live shows with Jacqui Hicks (b.vocs, sax & flute) or Debby Bracknell (b.vocs & flute) and Alan Wormald (gtr & b.vocs).

SHAKATAK

“This music still glows as brightly as that first hearing...Shakatak aren’t just a band, they were the soundtrack to our lives” RONNIE SCOTT’S House Magazine (UK)

“A wild diversity seldom found anymore... tons of rhythmic and stylistic variety...slamming” JAZZIZ Magazine (USA)

34It was back in the late 50’s when I would be going along every week to the Glanmor Club. Maurice Levenson, who was better known as Schmoo to

everyone was one of the driving forces getting the club going along with Swansea musicians, Derek Morgan, Russ Jones and John Ham.

I remember watching John Ham playing trumpet in his RAF uniform when home on leave! The local musicians would be the backbone of the club and would be joined by guest musicians. One regular throughout the 60’s and for many years to come was saxophonist Danny Moss with his wife, vocalist, Jeannie Lamb. Danny’s son, Danny Moss junior is a fine double bass player now resident in Australia, and on visits to the UK plays at Swansea Jazzland.

The Glanmor Club even hosted Amen Corner for their debut gig, but sadly ran into financial trouble in the late 60’s and the club had to close.

The jazz club continued though with a move to the Liberal Club and has been the home of weekly jazz sessions in Swansea for around 45 years. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s pianist Russ Jones and drummer Derek Morgan provided the bedrock of the club as it continued to host international jazz artists such as Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Tal Farlow and Benny Carter amongst many others.

The club became Swansea Jazzland in the 1990’s and the Liberal Club became the St James Club around about the same time. Pianist Dave Cottle began arranging the programme of events as he does today. The quality of weekly jazz is as high as it has ever been in Swansea.

It is great to see that jazz music is still so popular and wonderful that such large audiences come along to the St James Club every Wednesday night.
