years we’ve been bringing great jazz to the Rehoboth Beach area

to add to our great fall weather. And like a bottle of fine red wine or French cognac, this entire annual celebration of jazz just gets better.

The board of directors for Delaware Celebration of Jazz, along with all the volunteers who join with us to handle the infinite details required for an undertaking of this magnitude, and especially the artists who love play-ing for their audience, all welcome you. You are the reason why we call our Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival the Greatest Jazz Festival in the World.

You’ll find lots of transporta-tion options for getting around and an almost endless variety of shopping opportuni-ties to help fill your daylight hours. The Boardwalk and beaches are beautiful in the fall when the warm ocean helps keep temperatures comfortable.

Put that all together with the great music and it’s easy to see why so many of you have come back year after year, and why so many more jazz lovers are discovering us all the time.

Our community has once again come together to provide great con-certs in Cape Henlopen High School’s state-of-the-art theater, and on the stages of Rehoboth Beach Elementary. Additionally, the Rusty Rudder and Bottle & Cork in Dewey Beach and Chespeake and Maine in Rehoboth

8 2017 REHOBOTH BEACH JAZZ FESTIVAL

Leon Galitzin, a driving force in making the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival one of the resort’s top events, died June 11 at the age of 70.

Born in Paris, Galitzin immigrated to America as a child in 1949. He became an American citizen in 1957, and his family settled in Baltimore around that time. He went on to become an international sales executive, later moving to Rehoboth Beach, where he quickly became involved with the nascent Jazz Fest. Galitzin was considered the right hand to jazz festival President Dennis Santangini.

"Leon was like a brother to me,” Santangini said. “We talked every day, mostly about the jazz festival. It helped me tremendously and kept me going."

Santangini said their friendship spans the 18 years they've been involved together in staging Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival.

"He moved to town and wanted to get involved and has been ever since. This year's ticket sales are going great, and we were already talking about next year's event.

"He was dedicated and energetic and happy. He was always upbeat and happy. Every time I called and asked him how he was doing he would say, 'I'm terrific, I'm good.' Even when he had had a stroke and was in the hospital, he said he was terrific and good,” Santangini said. "Leon lived the way he wanted to, and now he's in that great jazz festi-val in the sky."

Sydney Arzt, one of the festival’s founders, said Galitzin arrived in Rehoboth about five years into the event’s exis-tence. The jazz fest, with its 28th edition in October, was originally conceived to get people to downtown Rehoboth in the fall, Arzt said. Galitzin, who was retired and had time on his hands, volunteered, she said.

Arzt said Galitzin was driven by a love of music, and he put his experience in the private sector to good use.

“He was very outgoing and quite a good salesperson. He expanded the marketing of the jazz festival to cities outside our original demographic,” she said.

Arzt said Galitzin helped market the festival in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and organized music-related cruises.

Friend and fellow Jazz Fest board member Kas Naylor said Galitzin’s death is a profound loss for the festival and for his friends. She said Galitzin’s enthusiasm and love of music helped make the festival what it is today. Naylor said Galitzin had a personality to match his 6-feet-4-inch, 300-pound size.

She said whenever jazz fest rolled around, Galitzin was easy to find in colorful sweaters and he always had some-thing to laugh or joke about.

Naylor said Galitzin had visited Rehoboth for many years and loved the city’s small-town charm. He had a son and a daughter and three grandchildren, Naylor said.

“We are really going to miss him on many, many levels,” she said.

Local musician Viki Dee said, “He was the kind of man that lived large and loved life.”

Dee said Galitzin could often be found at Casa DiLeo in Rehoboth, where he would sip on a glass of red wine. She said Galitzin was a big supporter of her and other musicians through the festival, which Dee has played twice in addition to taking part in jam sessions.

“I was honored to take the stage because of Leon,” she said. “I felt like I owed him.”

Dee said Galitzin was a fun-loving guy who took beach living to the fullest.

She recalled once seeing him in December walking across a parking lot in his flip-flops. When Dee mentioned that he was wearing flip-flops in the cold, Galizin replied, “Open toes until it snows.”

“And sure enough, you would see him in flip-flops until it snowed,” Dee said.

As we live through the years of our life, we can occasion-ally pinpoint one event that

truly inspires us to choose a future path. This year’s Producer of the Year Gary Spencer credits his career to the influence of his parents and a musical occasion that changed his life.

Gary was born in Reading, Penn-sylvania. His father, a police officer, and his mother, a dedicated housewife both loved listening to music, and jazz was always playing in the back-ground. Gary’s father enjoyed great jazz artists such as Dexter Gordon, Hank Crawford and Jimmy Smith. His mother listened to Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Williams and Billy Eckstine. But even though this wonderful music was always a part of his household, Gary never heard it performed live.

When he was in first grade, a lo-cal foundation sent musicians to his school as part of a program called Music in the Schools. This was the first time Gary saw and heard jazz music performed live, and in spite of his young age, jazz music captured his heart – convincing him that he needed to be a part of it for the rest of his life. After he graduated from Reading High School, he attended Cheyney State College in Pennsylvania. But music was always his inner passion.

His life-influencing event occurred in 1995 when he met well-known music programmer Bill Royston, who gave Gary the opportunity to be closely involved with music produc-tion. The very next year, he came to Rehoboth Beach and met the members of the Delaware Celebration of Jazz. He has been assisting with the produc-tion of this event ever since.

“When you are involved with this work,” says Gary, “it’s not about who you are. It’s about the team. Some people work in jobs or disciplines and never receive a reflection of their work. All of us who work behind the scenes get to view the reflection of our work at every show through the wonderful energy produced by the response of the audience. The pro-

duction team works hard, not only because we enjoy it, but because we share a sense of camaraderie and ac-complishment that withstands time. And at the end of a show, we look at each other and understand the satis-faction of a job well done.

“Through music, I enjoy giving back to the community the things that they gave me; things that shaped my life. I count my blessings, and hope to stay healthy and happy as I keep bringing live music to the people.”

Well, Gary, maybe there’s a young person attending this year’s Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival who will hear the music for the first time, like you did so long ago. And maybe that moment will stay with him or her forever. Congrat-ulations on being the 2017 Producer of the Year. May you always be part of the show!

“Tone, or the ‘sound’ of my horn is really crucial to me,” says the 4-time Grammy nominated James Oppen-hein - tagged “Boney James” in his early 20s as a thin, struggling musi-cian. The winner of four RIAA gold albums, a Soul Train award and an NAACP award nomination continues, “I practice my saxophone in my back yard studio every day when I’m not on the road. I’m still dedicated to trying to be a better player. I spend much of my time with a keyboard next to me and a computer behind me. So when I get a creative idea, I’ll reach over to the keyboard and pick out a few notes or record myself singing a melody. I start gathering pieces. Then I’ll build on them and gradually they turn into songs. I get more and more excited and start spending 14-hour days out there. Before I know it, I’ve made an album!”

Of course this process would not

be possible if James weren’t so skilled with the production technology; he says he views digital production as an instrument in itself.

The ‘analog’ sound of the sax combined with the digital sounds of modern production contribute to the sonic tension that fuels the great majority of his work, including his most recent album, Honestly, featuring Avery*Sunshine and Eric Roberson. Boney is excited about his 16th CD: “The title reflects how I aspire to live my life and create my music. I try to do what I can to make the world a more pleasant place.” Nine of the ten cuts are co-written by James, and he states that “Honestly is an affirmation of the power of music.”

His free-wheeling, vibrant show will kick off in concert at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 14th at the Performing Arts Theater at Cape Henlopen High School.

Artists and production team DeBoer and Grace have enjoyed global success. They’ve won every major music award in their native Canada from a Juno to a MuchMusic Award to a Canadian Radio Music Award. Internationally, they’ve achieved commercial success and received critical accolades for their work as remixers, label owners, producers, and artists in the genres of R&B, jazz and dance.

R ick Braun’s family was sur-rounded by music. Mom played piano and banjo (an unlikely

combination) and his brother took up the trumpet just in time for Rick to do the same. While attending the Eastman School of Music, Braun’s first band, Auracle, landed a two-album deal, working with Miles Davis and the late Teo Macero. Braun went on to add his signature sound to session tracks for such luminaries as Tom Petty, War, the late Glenn Frey, Natalie Cole, Sade, Rod Stewart and Tina Turner.

Kim Waters lends his saxophone talents to two shows during the Re-hoboth Beach Jazz Festival! He appears alongside Steve Cole on Saturday, Oc-tober 14 at 10 p.m. at the Rusty Rudder. Then, on Sunday October 15 as part of the 2017 Grand Jam kicking off at 6:30 p.m. at Cape Henlopen High School on Kings Highway in Lewes.

Waters’ addictive grooves combine the breezy, laissez-faire feel of tradi-tional jazz with the emotions of R&B, funk and soul, moving him to the top of the charts time and time again. In fact, JazzTimes Magazine declared, “Waters is simply one of the planet’s best saxophonists.” He is instantly recognizable for his keen melodic sensibilities and soulful approach to his sax.

Loved by R&B and jazz fans alike, his crossover appeal, his twenty

Smooth Jazz number 1 radio hits and dynamic performances have placed him among the elite in his field. His 2016 release, Rhythm and Romance, features covers of Janet Jackson’s smash “No Sleep” featuring Chris Big Dog Davis, Sam Smith’s multi-platinum “I’m Not the Only One” and Kim’s reimagining of the DeBarge clas-sic “Time Will Reveal.”

Waters has enjoyed longevity in the jazz field that has rarely been dupli-cated. Waters says, “My motto is to try and live in a way where I am not stressing about anything. What’s go-ing to be is going to be. I strive to be happy because life is short.”

Originally from Maryland, Kim Waters was inspired by such jazz luminaries as Duke Ellington, Her-bie Hancock, George Duke, George Benson, Grover Washington Jr. and

Cannonball Adderley. Waters was born into a musical fam-

ily and picked up the violin at the age of eight.

“That didn’t go over well with the fellas,” says Waters with a smile. But at the age of 13 he discovered his muse in the alto and soprano saxophones.

Lalah Hathaway was born in 1968 in Chicago, Illinois. She is the daughter of accomplished musician Eulaulah Hathaway and singer Donny Hatha-way (“Where is the Love” duet with Roberta Flack). Lalah lost her father in 1979 when he plunged fifteen floors from a New York hotel. The tragic cir-cumstances were a shock to the music community and gave his hit duet with Washington, D.C.–based Roberta Flack an entirely new meaning.

Following in her parents’ melodic footsteps, Lalah Hathaway released a series of albums starting in 1990, each one contributing hit singles to the R&B charts. She continued writing, producing and doing background vocals with many other established artists, including Take 6, Mary J. Blige, The Winans and Marcus Miller. In 1999, Hathaway joined GRP Records

Baritone singer, musician, songwrit-er, and record producer Larry Graham, Jr. is best known as the bass player in the soul/funk band Sly & the Family Stone, as well the founder and front man of Graham Central Station. He is credited with the invention of “slap-ping,” a bass playing technique that radically expanded the tonal range of the bass guitar.

At the age of 5 he learned to tap dance and shortly thereafter started pi-ano lessons. He joined his junior-high band playing drums; continuing to do so throughout high school. By the time he was 13 he had recorded his first re-cord while expanding his repertoire of instruments to include drums, piano, guitar, bass and harmonica. At 15 he joined his mother’s band, The Dell Graham Trio. Mom played piano, with young Larry on guitar and Ruben Kerr – who eventually became a member of Larry’s first band - on drums.

In 1968 Larry joined Sly and the Family Stone. Their first album A Whole New Thing provided a vehicle for the world to hear Larry’s unique bass playing. In 1993 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Sly and the Family Stone.

In the early ‘70s, Graham left Sly to produce a band named Hot Choco-late, which he eventually joined and renamed Graham Central Station – which became the name of their first album.

Larry continues to write, and along with the rest of Sly and the Family Stone received the Rhythm & Blues Pioneer Award in 2001. He performs at international venues both as a solo and with Graham Central Station. He and Prince enjoyed a very successful world tour in 2010. Braun, they think of deep grooves riding over an even deeper sub-bass. Need proof? Simply play Cadillac Slim on a big stereo system – with a sub-woofer! Rick’s crystal-clear trumpet intro sets the stage for nothing more than a bass line and a tambourine. But it’s a symphony nonetheless. It is dif-ficult to resist the urge to dance.

Released in February, 2017, Braun’s new CD, Around The Horn, features special guests Peter White, Till Brön-ner, Lindsey Webster & John Stoddart. The collaboration draws inspiration from unexpected sources including Africa, Brazil, Alicia Keyes, Coldplay, Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez. “I just want to continue to explore the boundaries of what I am capable of as a musician,” declares the chart-topping trumpeter, composer and producer. Known for his impeccable technical chops, melodic wizardry and keen compositional prowess, the consum-mate Los Angeles-based musician has been thrilling audiences for decades. Braun has made a mark staying true to his own musical voice and eclectic influences that have allowed him to collaborate across genre with some of the biggest names in music.

The new CD is already a hit with jazz aficionados everywhere. Hear pieces from that new album at the West Coast Jam starting at 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 12th at the Perform-ing Arts Theater at Cape Henlopen High School.

Marc Antoine’s style is nothing if not eclectic. His seamless combina-tion of classical, roma, flamenco and smooth jazz “… is soothing to hear and enjoy,” says one fan.

Marc’s style has a way of appealing to the imagination in all of us. As a child, he liked to sit on an old bridge near his home, and wonder, “Where did they come from? Where did they go?” Marc’s live performances take your imagination back to that bridge where it all began.

On his 11th birthday in Paris, his parents presented him with his first guitar. By age 13, Marc’s aptitude for the instrument was obvious. His father decided to send him to the Conserva-toire de Paris, and a scant four years later, he had earned several awards, and was playing local gigs with his one-of-a-kind flare for mixing genres.

In 1981, however, he fell through a window; sustaining a devastating

injury to his left hand. Even though doctors intoned that he would prob-ably never use the hand again, the young guitarist remained undaunted as the magic of the muse lead the way to recovery. By 1984, he was back on

to team up with Joe Sample on the album The Song Lives On, which topped the jazz charts at No. 2. The album became Hathaway’s second debut on Billboard’s Hot 200 and later charted on the Top R&B album chart. In response to the album’s success, Hathaway and Sample were honored with Billboard/BET On Jazz Award for Mainstream Jazz Album.

In 2007, the re-launched Stax Records label signed Hathaway. She stated, “The foundation of soul music is rooted in Stax Records. Working with the late (Earth, Wind & Fire singer and co-founder) Maurice White on the Interpretations project was more than special to me. There is no higher compliment than to be signed to a label whose music is timeless. I’m proud to carry the torch that will continue to bring quality soul music to a new audience.” Lalah will reignite that torch in concert at 8 p.m. Friday, October 13th at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Md., Maysa Leak knew early on that she would be a musician. “I was six years old when my mom took me to see Purlie,” she recalls. “When Melba Moore came on stage and sang her heart out, I knew at that moment I wanted to make people feel the way she made me feel.”

After high school, she studied at Morgan State University in Baltimore City, earning her degree in classical performance. There she performed as a member of the world-famous Mor-gan State University Choir. While she was at Morgan State, Leak met Stevie Wonder, and ended up singing with him for a year. After becoming the lead singer for Incognito in the ‘90s, her first solo album debuted shortly thereafter. Maysa celebrates her 26th year as a solo recording artist with her instantly identifiable vocal sound encompassing both jazz and R&B.

In celebration of this milestone, Maysa recently released her latest album, Love is a Battlefield. She and that unforgettable voice will grace us at 2:30 p.m. in Lewes at the Performing Arts Theater at Cape Henlopen High School.

stage, captivating audiences – with both hands - once again.

In 1988 Marc moved to London, performing with Basia and also the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1990s, enhancing the recorded and live sounds of greats that include Sting, Celine Dion, Cher, Rod Stewart and George Benson. That list grew with his work on movie soundtracks such as “Get Shorty,” “The Fan,” and “Demoli-tion Man.”

The accolades will continue on Saturday, October 14th starting at 2:30 at Epworth United Methodist Church just off Coastal Highway at Holland Glade Road. Peter White will also be in attendance. Things will pick up once again at 7:30 when Marc joins Gerald Veasley and Lindsey Webster on stage at Epworth. Antoine will also be part of the 2017 Grand Jam on Sun-day, October 15th starting at 6:30 p.m. at Cape Henlopen High School.

Pieces of a Dream entered the Philadelphia music scene in 1976. Key-boardist James Lloyd, drummer Curtis Harmon and former bassist Cedric Napoleon based their name on “Pieces of Dreams,” a cover by Stanley Turren-tine that the group loved to perform.

The band started playing throughout the Tri-State area, and was soon being featured on local radio stations. But it was the late Grover Washington Jr., the sax man who made Philadelphia his home, who helped Pieces of a Dream become the internationally known stars they are today. The trio landed a spot as the house band for a local television show called City Lights, and one day while the teenagers were play-ing at the Bijou (where Grover had re-corded his Live at the Bijou album), he sat in with them to play “Mr. Magic.”

When Washington announced that he was starting a production company,

Pieces of a Dream was his first act. “That felt awesome,” recalls Lloyd. “Not just having an album out, but going all over the world touring and performing with Grover.”

From 1981 to 1984, Pieces of a Dream built their reputation with three albums on Elektra that came to define the musical essence and the popularity of smooth jazz radio. Those seminal records yielded some of their earli-est hits, including “Warm Weather,” “Mount Airy Groove” and “Fo Fi Fo.” Shortly thereafter, Pieces of a Dream moved to EMI/Blue Note and went on to record seven more albums. During this period, the group amicably parted ways with longtime friend Cedric Napoleon.

The youthful exuberance of those Philly kids from the mid-‘70s is still very much alive.

Pieces of a Dream performs in con-

cert Friday night, October 13th, starting at 10 p.m. at the Performing Theater at Rehoboth Beach Elementary School in South Rehoboth.

When tenor saxophonist Richard Elliot prepares for an event like the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival, he knows first and foremost that it has to be funky. “When I was growing up in the ’70s and first learned to play the saxophone,” he says, “I was mostly attracted to instrumentally based R&B and to jazz that had R&B roots.” His CDs and performances definitely go down that path and always take the road that leads to funk.

“Harry the Hipster,” one of his most popular originals, “…is reminiscent of songs that had cool, recurring melodies and a funky pulse. The idea was not to wrap yourself up in how much complexity you could put into the song, but how much feeling and groove can you put into the song,” says Elliot.

He grew up in Los Angeles where he started playing saxophone in middle

school. He first rose to prominence in the ‘80s during his five-year run with the Bay Area institution Tower of Power. It should come as no surprise that he would choose to celebrate funk in such a dedicated, decisive way after lending his explosive saxophone virtu-osity to that groundbreaking group.

Throughout all of his music, Richard Elliot strives to achieve one certain goal. “Miles Davis said, ‘The hardest thing for a musician to do is sound like himself.’ That stuck with me,” Elliot says. “If you fixate on a single influ-ence, you tend to sound like someone who’s trying to sound like that person. I never know if I’ve achieved that goal, but on occasion I’ve had someone come up to me and say, ‘I heard a song on the radio and I knew it was you.’” Richard Elliot always puts a new twist on his classic sound, but you’ll have no trouble knowing exactly who’s

playing at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 12 when Richard joins the West Coast Jam at Cape Henlopen High School.

Jazz-inspired paintings, hangings and ceramics by Lee Hoffman (1942-2014), a true Renaissance

man, a scholar and artist of incredible talent and creativity will be on display at Cape Henlopen High School dur-ing the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival events Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 12-15. Hoffman’s work is represented in selected collections all over the world including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washing-ton, D.C.

Hoffman began his artistic journey at The Barnes Foundation in Phila-delphia as a special student of Mlle. Violette de Mazia, directress of the foundation, from 1958 to 1963. His concentration of studies concerned the development of the western Euro-

pean traditions of aesthetics, painting, sculpture, architecture and the decora-tive arts as evolving from the Floren-tine, Flemish and Venetian traditions.

After this time, Hoffman gave seri-

2017 REHOBOTH BEACH JAZZ FESTIVAL 41

The Beebe Medical Foundation received a $15,000 donation from the Delaware Celebration of Jazz, producers of the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival. This generous gift was presented to the foundation in July by board members Dennis Santangini and Kas Naylor. The gift will be used to help serve oncology patients at Beebe Healthcare's Tunnell Cancer Center.

"We are so thankful for this year's contribution from the Rehoboth Jazz Festival in addition to their past 12 years of generosity," said Tom Protack, Beebe Medical Foundation vice presi-dent of development.

Thirteen years ago, the Delaware Celebration of Jazz selected the Tun-nell Cancer Center as its designated recipient for the festival's proceeds. On a personal note, Delaware Celebra-tion of Jazz Board President Dennis Santangini said, "Years ago, when my wife was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, Beebe Healthcare's Tunnell Cancer Center, and in particular Dr. Peri, provided us with tremendous support and compassion during that difficult time. In an effort to keep this wonderful institution helping people who have been afflicted with the dis-ease, we chose Tunnell Cancer Center as our charitable designation.”

Naylor said, "If not for Denny, I'm not sure we'd still have the Jazz Festi-val. His commitment and hard work has helped this annual festival con-tinue to grow and flourish."

While he has always had a strong passion and appreciation for music as well as bringing that to the larger community, Santangini chuckles as he confides, "I can't even carry a tune in the shower."

The gift came a few short weeks after the passing of Leon Galitzin, who

was such a strong and loyal advocate for Beebe Tunnell Cancer Center.

“We will always remember Leon for his love of life and support of Beebe,” said Santangini.

“A special thanks to Denny and Kas for your wonderful partnership with Beebe and for your ongoing support and commitment to the Tunnell Can-cer Center," said Judy Aliquo, CFRE, president and CEO, Beebe Medical Foundation. “We are so honored to receive such generous support from the Jazz Festival.”

Save the date for the 28th Annual Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival pro-duced by the Delaware Celebration

of Jazz 501(c)(3) nonprofit corpora-tion to be held Oct. 12-15. For more information, visit rehobothjazz.com. Beebe Healthcare is a sponsor of the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival for the Opening Night and the Saturday night 7:30 p.m. All-Star show.

Beebe Medical Foundation was established in 1989 with the sole mis-sion to raise philanthropic support for Beebe Healthcare.

The foundation is located at 902 Savannah Road, Lewes. To learn more about how to give, contact the Beebe Medical Foundation at 302-644-2900 or online at beebemedicalfoundation.org.

“Thelonius at Night” by Lee Hoffman.

ous study to West African sculpture and American jazz. Throughout his life, he produced many unique and dis-tinct editions of lithographs, etchings, drypoints, woodcuts and monotypes, and created over 100 porcelain objects.

This special exhibit, the first time shown in the area, includes over 20 hanging works including portraits of Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker plus jazz-inspired por-celain ceramic pieces.

Hoffman moved to Lewes in 2004 and continued to paint and draw every day. In 2008, he returned to Philadel-phia and continued his work. He died unexpectedly in 2014, leaving a huge body of work as his legacy. For more information on the artist, or to view Hoffman's collection of available art for sale, go to leehoffmanart.com.
