WELCOMEWelcome to this year’s London Jazz

Festival, produced by Serious in

association with BBC Radio 3.

Through the huge international city

that is London, the Festival takes the

global language of jazz far and wide,

bringing together established stars

and emerging talent from across the

generations in an event that has a

resonance throughout the world.

A number of themes run through the

Festival, reflecting the traditions of jazz

and illustrating its breadth and depth.

From the streets of New Orleans to

the wide open spaces of the American

landscape, the Festival explores the

roots of American music through the

eyes and ears of the artists of today,

tracing a story that takes in the 50th

year of the iconic Impulse! record label

and marking some very special birthday

landmarks on the way. As always,

the programme includes a number of

premieres, commissions and special

collaborations and, amidst a wealth

of music reflecting the riches of the

European jazz scene, the extraordinary

range of jazz from throughout the UK

plays a crucial part.

The 10 day Festival also features an

incredible feast of free music, talks,

masterclasses and workshops, offering

a way into the music and its history.

Behind the scenes our Learning &

Participation team runs a hub of

activity, working with artists, local

schools and communities.

Beyond the live events BBC Radio 3

will broadcast over 40 hours of music

and you can download the Festival’s

mobile app for your pocket-sized

programme and to share your photos

and experiences.

London’s annual celebration of jazz

continues to grow and grow, which

is enabled by a strong network of

relationships with artists, venues,

producers and sponsors. These

partnerships make the Festival what

it is and we thank everyone for the

part they play.

Have a great Festival!

7.30pm Southbank Centre Royal Festival Hall------------------------------------------------------------------------

Son of legendary Indian percussionist Ustad Alla Rakha (Ravi Shankar’s tabla player), Zakir Hussain has worked with George Harrison, Charles Lloyd, John McLaughlin and the Grateful Dead among many others, continuing to explore the links between jazz and Indian music – connections that were first established in the 1960s.

STEVE COLEMANREFLEX+ STEVE WILLIAMSON------------------------------------------------------------------------

7.30pm Southbank Centre Queen Elizabeth Hall------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alto saxophonist and composer Steve Coleman was a central figure in the M-Base movement and has been at the forefront of advances in jazz composition for the last 25 years. Inspired by the African diaspora while studying in Ghana, Coleman explored a new rhythmic language, fusing interlocking beats and polyphonic harmonies, offering an alternative to conventional rhythm. Appearing in London for the first time in seven years, Coleman and his formidable trio continue to push the boundaries.

The opening set marks a welcome return to the concert stage for Steve Williamson. Long respected as a fiercely individual saxophonist, Williamson is one of the most original talents to have emerged in this country since he first took the scene by storm in the 1980s.

Playing from his latest ECM release Bold as Light, Micus appears for a rare London performance, having last played the UK in 1976.

Festival on the MoveEMILIA MARTENSSON

Drawing on the wistful folk songs of her native Sweden, Emilia Mårtensson creates a finely poised blend of jazz and artful alt-pop. Known in part for her collaborative work with the acclaimed Kairos 4tet, Mårtensson appears here with her own project, featuring pianist Barry Green. The critically acclaimed partnership of Claire Martin – one of the foremost jazz singers of her generation – and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett – the legendary classical and screen composer – creates a very special atmosphere on stage. Tonight they present their favourites from the Irving Berlin songbook including ‘Let’s Face the Music and Dance’, ‘How Deep is the Ocean’, ‘What’ll I do?’, ‘Cheek to Cheek’ and ‘Let Yourself Go’. KAIROS 4TET------------------------------------------------------------------------

8.30pm The Vortex ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Under the leadership of saxophonist Adam Waldmann, this increasingly potent band has found a melody-driven medium between modern jazz and forward-thinking music, as heard on their new Edition album Statement Of Intent. Influenced by the big tone of Dexter Gordon and the fluidity of Sonny Rollins, Themen’s garrulous style goes to the heart of the jazz spirit.

KINGS PLACE RESIDENCY

For the past couple of years this residency has thrown an intense spotlight on artists rapidly emerging as key figures in 21st century jazz. Hot on the heels of Stefano Bollani and The Bad Plus, this year’s series becomes a meeting place for artists from the USA and Europe, whose music stretches and probes the boundaries of jazz.

Wed 16 / 8pm / Hall One

NIK BARTSCH: RONIN--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the last ten years Swiss pianist/composer Nik Bärtsch has pioneered his syncopated Zen Funk style, which has carved a distinctive space between cool, crystalline modern jazz sounds, jagged rock riffs and minimalist dance floor grooves. Bärtsch and his group Ronin will perform from their haunting new ECM album Llyrìa. Vast chasms of space allow solos and grooves to take on trance-like properties creating a truly mesmerising live experience.

“Nobody currently on the scene comes close to sounding like this remarkable outfit.” –– BBC Online

Thu 17 / 8pm / Hall OneROBERT GLASPER--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drawing influence from the late great hip-hop producer J Dilla’s deconstructed dancefloor beats, while retaining an innate sense of melody and swing, Robert Glasper has excited hip-hop fans, rappers Mos Def and Kanye West, and jazz aficionados alike. Tonight he’ll play an acoustic set, demonstrating his prowess as a formidable pianist.

Fri 18 / 8pm / Hall OneGRETCHEN PARLATO--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gretchen Parlato’s voice brings a refreshing delicacy to the art of contemporary singing. A standout performer at last year’s Festival, she returns here to perform her gossamer version of Herbie Hancock’s ‘Butterfly’, plus material from her latest release The Lost and Found, featuring self-penned works, and delicate jazz make-overs, that span Lauryn Hill’s ‘All That I can Say’ and Simply Red’s ‘Holding Back The Years’.

Sat 19 / 3pm / Hall OneFRINGE MAGNETIC--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trumpeter Rory Simmons leads his extraordinary jazz-meets-classical group on a highly original mix of twisted pointillist harmonies, furtive rhythmic patterns and edgy soloing. Also known for his work as sideman to singer Jamie Cullum, playing both guitar and trumpet, Simmons adds rock attitude to his spiky sound palette with cello, violin, bass clarinet, percussion, piano and bass all jostling harmoniously.

Sat 19 / 8pm / Hall OneBEATS & PIECES --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manchester-based Beats & Pieces take the classic big band sound and add slamming bass and drums, guitar, wah-wah funk and retro fusion to cook up a musical brew that’s strong on contemporary grooves and stratospheric solos. Led by founder and musical director, Ben Cottrell, the group received rave reviews for their Ronnie Scott’s appearances this year and were winners of the 2011 European Young Artists’ Jazz Award.

“Danceable while bending the expectations of melody. What a debut.” –– The Guardian

Sat 19 / 8pm / Hall TwoPELbO + KARMA--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Combining the angelic soul jazz vocals of Ine Kristine Hoem with the sub-sonic tuba riffing of Kristoffer Lo and metal-edged drumming of Trond Bersu, Norwegian trio PELbO pulverize generic boundaries via turbo-charged improv and high-wire electronics.

STEFANO BOLLANIWITH SPECIAL GUEST MARTIAL SOLAL+ MARCIN WASILEWSKI TRIO------------------------------------------------------------------------

7.30pm Barbican------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two powerful sets from contrasting modern jazz piano stylists. Italian maestro and ECM artist Stefano Bollani combines melodic meditation with wild, Zappa-esque exuberance. In his first London performance since a sold-out Kings Place residency in 2009, he’ll perform solo and duet with piano legend Martial Solal – one of Europe’s iconic figures – who returns following an outstanding concert at last year’s Festival. This breathtaking duet promises a profusion of creative ideas.

Pianist Marcin Wasilewski’s Polish trio initially appeared as the long-standing rhythm section for Tomasz Stanko. Here performing music from their latest ECM album Faithful, the trio draw on music from Ornette Coleman, Hermeto Pascoal and Fran Landesman, adding their own spacious sensibility to create music of great depth and beauty.

SOUL REBELS BRASS BAND------------------------------------------------------------------------

7.30pm Southbank Centre Queen Elizabeth Hall------------------------------------------------------------------------

If jazz music is the heart of New Orleans, then the Soul Rebels’ music is the blood that pumps through the city’s body. They embrace the rich jazz traditions of their homeland but add life-affirming vocals and hip-shaking grooves aplenty. Couple those elements with funk, ska, hip-hop, with harmony vocals and you have a party band like no other. Following a successful UK tour this summer, the Soul Rebels are back to play from their new Rounder album Unlock Your Mind.

VOCAL JAZZ SUMMIT------------------------------------------------------------------------

PHRONESISPITCH BLACK------------------------------------------------------------------------

7.45pm Southbank Centre Purcell Room------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the first half of tonight’s concert, Phronesis present Pitch Black – a project inspired by leader Jasper Høiby’s sister, who lost her sight due to a form of cataract. Performing in complete darkness, the trio will explore our sensory relationship with music, looking at how musical perception can change according to the absence of one of our senses. In the second half, the trio preview material from their forthcoming album. The performance will be followed by a Q&A session with the trio.

“In a word, stunning: melodic contemporary jazz, played with a note-perfect flair and fluidity which lit up the room (metaphorically, at least). A unique, unmissable triumph.” –– The Telegraph
